MEET CBABI BAYOC:Cbabi (pronounced Kuh-bob-bi) Bayoc is an internationally-known visual artist and illustrator residing in St. Louis, Missouri. His subjects include family, children, music and a bunch of other cool stuff designed with line, bold color and phunk! Bayoc, whose birth name is Clifford Miskell, Jr., adopted his name CBABI (Creative-Black-Artist-Battling- Ignorance) during his time at Grambling State University (‘92-‘95). In 1997, a legal name change took place at the time of his marriage. Later, Cbabi would change his last name to BAYOC (Blesed-African-Youth-Of-Creativity) as something that could be shared with his future children. After working as a caricature artist at Six Flags over St. Louis, Cbabi pursued a career as an illustrator. His first notable client was Rap Pages magazine. During the entire year of 1998 he was given the RPM section on a monthly basis to display a caricature of the featured artist. Through that exposure, he was contacted by Violator Management to create the artwork for the cover of the Violator Compilation, Vol.1 album, featuring the likenesses of Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown, Q-Tip, LL Cool J, Mobb Deep, Fat Joe and Big Pun. The year before, Bayoc was approached to exhibit artwork at an organization called Dignity House in St. Louis, which was a beneficiary of musician Prince's Love 4 One Another (L4OA) charity tour. The volunteer team recorded the food donation event on July 27, 1997 and took the footage back to Prince. The rest, as they say, is history. Prince liked what he saw and collected Bayoc's art for many years. On October 20, 2000, the day Cbabi's first child was born, Prince's management called to request samples of new work. Prince used one of the pieces he acquired during that round, “Reine Keis Quintet”, as the cover art for his 23rd studio album, The Rainbow Children, which was released in 2001. The artwork was also the centerpiece of Prince's first Celebration event held at his Paisley Park complex in Chanhassen, Minnesota, June 13-17, 2001, celebrating The Rainbow Children album and the re-claiming of Prince's name after the expiration of his Warner Brothers contract. In 2012, Bayoc began his 365 Days with Dad series. This New Year's resolution to paint a positive image of black fatherhood each day for the entire year resulted in a journey that was inspiring (and exhausting!), ultimately resulting in the sharing of many stories of good experiences, no experience and hopeful experiences of Dads of all life stages. The project started a dialogue within the community about the importance of a strong foundation and support system for all children, no matter the age. Today, Cbabi spends his time working on a variety of projects, including portraits, community murals, school murals, children's book illustrations and is always up for a new challenge. He likes traveling to schools and talking with students about their own power in determining their destiny, using his own life experiences as lessons. He also enjoys spending time embarrassing his three teenage children. Hey friends, thanks for tapping in. Today it is an honor to share my conversation with Rampage the Last Boy Scout the Legendary Flipmode Squad a legendary rap crew that includes members Rah Digga, Spliff Starr,DJ Scratch, Baby Sham, and of course Busta Rhymes. In this conversation we cover a gang of topics including why you shouldn't feel bad about eating McDonalds in Europe, the amount of jazz cabbage consumed during the Flipmode Squad Meets Def Squad, where you can find his new mixtape, his business ventures and most surprisingly, Rampage is able to give a shocking amount of insight into of all things “HOW J DILLA PRODUCED BEATS” I'm not going to give you any details….but if you make beats or produce music than you'll want to hear what Rampage has to say…If you care about some of the different avenues of income that are available to you as an artist including ghostwriting. I'll admit, when I interviewed him I hadn't heard any of Quarantine Chronicles, his most recent mixtape. Personally, my favorite song at the moment is “book of rhymes.” Check it out, links are in the description . Thank you very much MJ at MJ's Hip Hop Connex for making this happen. Welcome back to PART 2 of our Pussycat Dolls' “PCD” journey. In this episode, Angie (@poetrysoul3) and Steffi (@inn_mho) break down the era! In our Era Breakdown episodes, we give context and explain where Diva Dailies was at this point in their career and why they made this particular album. We then talk about the glaringly obvious, unequal power dynamics and how that ultimately played into the Pussycat Doll's demise. We also try to solve one of the GREATEST POP MYSTERIES: Why did Nicole Scherzinger never make it as a solo artist? We then get into a deep dive into the genius marketing behind the group and some of our personal favorite marketing/promo they did during the era. And as per usual, we share our favorite music videos, live performances, and end the episode reflecting on the ultimate impact that the Pussycat Dolls' “PCD” had in music and the girl group pantheon.Again, this is part 2 of the conversation! So make sure you listen to part 1 where we discussed the album track by track. We hope you enjoyed our Pussycat Dolls' “PCD” journey!Album Info: PCD is the debut studio album by American girl group The Pussycat Dolls, released on September 12, 2005, by A&M Records. In 1993, the Pussycat Dolls was created as a burlesque troupe by choreographer Robin Antin. After attracting media attention, Antin struck a joint venture with Interscope Records to develop the Pussycat Dolls into a brand, with Jimmy Iovine assigning the project to Ron Fair. As one of the executive producers Fair produced the majority of the album and collaborated with producers like Kwamé, Polow da Don and Rich Harrison. The music style of PCD was described as pop/R&B and urban dance-pop. Lyrically the album incorporates sexual innuendo and explores the themes of feminism and romance. It features guest vocals from rappers Busta Rhymes, Timbaland and will.i.am.*Email us for show notes: email@example.com*Twitter & Instagram: @divadailiespod*YouTube: Diva Dailies PodcastSTEFFI'S SOCIAL MEDIA:*Twitter & Instagram: @inn_mho*YouTube: innmyhumbleopinionANGIE'S SOCIAL MEDIA:*Twitter: @poetrysoul3*YouTube: Sleepy Nerd ProductionsTIME STAMPS:- Housekeeping (01:09)Era Breakdown (03:20)- Pop Corn & Pop Stars (04:12)- Spill the Technicolor Tea (16:38)- But We Need the Audience to Buy the Album (48:21)- Video Killed the Radio Star (63:48)- The Mic Is On (79:11)- Show Me the Receipts (84:02)- Impact/ Closing Thoughts (87:22)- Preview Next Week's Episode (94:10)

When the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik first came out, I'd just left a job working in a record store and was doing some part-time work as a mobile DJ. I had a few regular gigs here and there on Long Island, which is where it's at when you do that sort of thing, because you get to know your crowd and who likes what, etc. Weddings and birthday parties, etc. were just Death on a Triscuit, because you have guests of all different ages, and the old people want to hear one thing, and the young people want to hear something else, and there are always arguments about the volume...feh. I hated doing that stuff. At any rate, I was working in a bar in Franklin Square, NY at this point and this crowd absolutely loved this track. That was a cool bunch, with a lot of that adult alternative stuff. I enjoyed working there except for two things: The equipment was stored in the bar's basement, which meant going outside into the alley out back, going downstairs to get it, dragging it upstairs and setting it up, and having to und0 it all at the end of the night; The setup was on floor level, which meant that any drunk moron could—and sometimes did—crash directly into my stuff. And since I was still playing records sometimes, that made for some audio disasters. I would have stayed longer if I hadn't broken my ankle and moved 30 miles away in the interim (long, long story there). I also liked my boss and he'd throw me other work from time to time. Ah, well. Incidentally, I didn't mention this during the episode but the song has been covered about a dozen times and sampled more than twice that many. In fact, Busta Rhymes' "Break Ya Neck" owes so much to "Give it Away" that all of the musicians who played on "Give it Away" appear on the record's credits as co-writers. (It's not so much a sampling as it is Rhymes inserting the chorus into the song.) Click here for a transcript of the episode. Click here to support the show via Patreon.

“Being a multi-hyphenate is not a disability – it's an ability. It's an advantage.” Jared Grimes is a Tony Nominated actor currently starring in Funny Girl on Broadway. His effervescent energy lights up the stage every night at The August Wilson Theatre. In this episode, his energy continues into our conversation as we discuss what being a “bag of tricks” in this industry actually means. In this episode, we discover Grimes' road to Broadway, how he turned his ADD diagnosis into multi-hyphenation, inspirations, getting people in power to understand the multi-hyphenate, and we chat about how tap opened up his eyes to the art of multi-hyphenating. “At an early age I began to latch on to the idea that if you're a tap dancer, that means you can be many things. It doesn't mean that you just use your feet to connect with people or share with people. I'm looking at all my heroes and they are singing, they are acting, they are comedians, they're lindyhoppers, they're writers, they're choreographers, they do camerawork – they are behind the camera, in front of the camera – all those guys did that and I was just like wow so that's what it is to be a tap dancer. My earliest idea of what a tap dancer was, was a multi-hyphenate.” Jared Grimes is a quadruple threat in the world of the arts where he is heavily making his mark in singing, dancing, acting, and choreographing. He received a Tony Nomination for his performance in Funny Girl on Broadway, which he is currently starring in. On numerous occasions, he has danced alongside legends such as Wynton Marsalis, Gregory Hines, Ben Vereen, Jerry Lewis and Fayard Nicholas. and also performed for Barack Obama and Ted Kennedy at the Kennedy Center. Most recently on Broadway, Jared could be seen in the Tony Award-winning production of A Soldier's Play. Grimes has toured with Musical legend, Mariah Carey, under the choreography of Marty Kudelka, and danced for artists such as Common, Salt-n-Pepa, Envogue, Busta Rhymes and the Roots. Jared's theater credits include, After Midnight on Broadway directed by Warren Carlyle, Twist directed by Debbie Allen, Babes in Arms at the Goodspeed Opera House choreographed by Randy Skinner, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes directed by John Rando at Encores and Broadway Underground directed by himself. In the world of acting, Jared is known for his recurring role of ‘Adrian' on NBC's hit show “Manifest.” He performed the lead role of ‘Jackson' in the Annapurna feature film Swing Kids and Sammy Davis Jr.'s “Birth of the Blues” on Michael Feinstein's American Songbook for PBS. Other film credits include Paramount's, The Marc Pease Experience starring Ben Stiller, New Line Cinema's Little Manhattan and Elevation Filmwork's' First Born starring Elizabeth Shue. Grimes has appeared in commercials for Coca-Cola, Subway, MTV and television shows such as CBS' “Star Search,” “Showtime at the Apollo,” ABC Family's “Dance Fever” and “The Jerry Lewis Telethon.” Learn more about your ad choices. “To navigate complexity, you need people who not only believe in the same change you do, but bring experience so deep and unique, it fast forwards your ability to see clearly,” I wrote this note about my brother, Little Shawn, after finding an intrinsic connection within myself that equally matches who he walks with inside himself. That deeper relationship we carry within our being creates room for our witnessing and connection with those who see (and KNOW) what we're really about. Seeing yourself is that unique gift from the universe saying, “You're right where you need to be. Don't move. But make MOVES.” That's what Shawn Pen, aka BEHIND THE SMOKE, is doing right now. He's already written the documentary of his life, the book, the words. Now he's moving it to screen (documentary, that is) for us to see what's really “behind the smoke.” If you know, you know. If you don't, this episode will open windows into the rap scene in a way you'd only dream possible. Remember: hip hop and rap is the spine of culture. It's the body. It's the blood, And it influences everything around us. It influences everything I care about and everyone I care about. Peep the list (below) of Shawn's WORKS, history, and the tools you'll get from listening to this one-of-a-kind episode from a one-of-a-kind person. WORKS: I could list it. But it's better I don't. Let's start here: On Wikipedia, it says “Tyrone Shawn Wilkins, (born December 21, 1969) better known as Little Shawn and Shawn Pen, is an American hip hop artist, rapper, songwriter and producer from East Flatbush, Brooklyn." Then it says, "Little Shawn released the single "Dom Perignon" (Uptown Records) featuring fellow Brooklyn rapper The Notorious B.I.G. on 20 July 1995. The music video also featured Busta Rhymes, another rapper from Brooklyn. It peaked at #5 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 as well as #87 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and #23 on the Hot Rap Tracks charts. The song was featured on the soundtrack to the Fox TV crime drama New York Undercover." It's rumored that Tupac Shakur was on his way to record a verse for Shawn when he was robbed and shot 5 times in 1994. We get into this. And much more. (See the list of TOOLS below) And make sure to follow @behindthesmoke to stay plugged into WHERE HE'S GOING. Not just where he's been. Tools You'll Get from This Episode: - Tools to stay clear-headed when the world wants you foggy - Unmatched tips for how to stay truly dedicated to your truth and knowing of self - Tips that remind you how to present yourself in a way that honors your integrity - Reminders that empower you to ensure your influence isn't overtaken by outside influences - Helpful guidance to uplift your image when others see you in a way that differs from your own knowing of who you are - Inspiration for cultivating your clarity and sticking to it

We had the pleasure of interviewing BLKBOK over Zoom video.Neoclassical pianist and Detroit native BLKBOK is set to soundtrack this year's Juneteenth celebrations with the deluxe version of his debut album 'Black Book'. Arriving on June 17 via icons+giants, ‘Black Book DLUX' is a timely natural continuation of BLKBOK's critically-acclaimed debut as a composer, reflecting on pertinent social issues, with counterpoints, and sustaining a dialogue through his thought-provoking pieces. The package includes 11 new interstitial poems woven throughout the album, written and narrated by award-winning Jamaican poet Lauren Delapenha. Additionally, it features two new powerful singles “Kendrick + Karine” and “Forgotten Girls.”While touring the world as a pianist or musical director with the likes of Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, Timbaland and John Mayer, BLKBOK spent his private time composing his own original material, music that was inspired by his love of hip-hop and classical music. When the pandemic set in and touring came to a halt, he finalized these compositions which led to getting signed by icons+giants/WMG and releasing his first body of solo work, last year's ‘Black Book.' BLKBOK was inspired to create ‘Black Book' as a tribute to the movie ‘Green Book' and the courageous story of pianist/composer Don Shirley, whose trailblazing spirit helped open the door for black classical pianists of which there remains too few. The largely instrumental album features a standout vocal collaboration with Hamilton's Tony and Grammy Award-winning Renée Elise Goldsberry on “My Life.” Provocative singles like “George Floyd and the Struggle for Equality,” “November 7th 2020” and “Michelle's First Day At The White House” offer listeners unique perspectives of the social climate that we live in, and an opportunity to hear BLKBOK's reflections of the world through the keys of the piano.Since releasing his debut album, BLKBOK has taken to social media weekly, while developing new work in real-time and challenging the way we listen to classical music. A 21st century black pianist equally infatuated with rappers like Busta Rhymes and The Notorious B.I.G., as well as the classical greats like Debussy, Mozart, and Bach, BLKBOK has gone viral on TikTok with his riveting neoclassical TikTok covers of Cardi B and Kendrick Lamar. On Instagram, he hosts a monthly “What's Goin' On” social series, where he develops new songs related to current cultural milestones and events, and offers an open forum for fans to share their feelings and discuss social issues. We want to hear from you!
