Eight years ago, Chad Weiden walked into one of South Carolina's most underperforming elementary schools — a campus so low-rated that the state took it over, failed to fix it, and handed it back to the district. He just turned it into a good school. The strategy for school turnaround he used wasn't a new curriculum, a fresh initiative, or a culture retreat. It was building beacons of excellence on every team and coaching teachers in real time, in the moment, while students were in the room. Weiden spent nearly three decades building and leading schools across Chicago and South Carolina, including turning around Meeting Street Burns Pre-K through second grade from "unsatisfactory" to "good" on the state report card — in one of the most underserved communities in the state. He's a principal who understands that every child can learn and that the system, not the child, is what needs fixing. Find him on LinkedIn to follow his work. School turnaround is one of the most searched and least understood challenges in school leadership. Most principals know they need to fix culture — what they don't know is which two or three instructional moves actually move the needle. This episode answers that question directly, from a principal who lived it in real time in a school the system had already given up on.

In history, a retreat from Singapore can have hairs all over it, but Richard Marles has turned that around, as the Grumpy Strategists unpack the events. At Singapore's Shangri-La dialogue, Mr Marles faced down an America First Pete Hegseth, meeting the Pentagon chief's fiery lethality towards allies with his own Aussie cold steel. The result is Australia's AUKUS deliverables are now 3 used US Virginia class subs sometime in the 2030s instead of the earlier stupid idea of getting a new sub as part of the deal. There's celebration in the streets here in Canberra now that our fears that we might get a new submarine of any kind sometime in the next 20 years have been laid to rest. Australia is moving towards global best practice in aged care for submarines with our Collins class fleet....now that we've cancelled their life extension program (??).....We must not let this national skill wither, but apply it instead to subs with nuclear reactors on board. Mr Marles and his colleague Pat Conroy seem to understand this intuitively in a way others don't.Marcus channels his inner Marles to show us the benefits of this 'chase for simplicity' and 'cost savings' through a standalone fleet of 3 used subs. It's a tweak to what we had previously understood was a uniquely complex and costly but deeply integrated 3 nation AUKUS program. The episode deals with Minister Marles' greatest fears. And with clown spiders, one of Michael's. It also shows the difference between an AUKUS Pillar 2 "Signature" project and the highly anticipated "Marquee" project many had expected. Hint: you can fit many signatures onto one marquee.

A Chicano educator from Los Angeles has spent nearly 20 years building the infrastructure that schools won't — the kind that catches students before they fall through the cracks. Hector Flores is the CEO of the Latino Film Institute, home to the Youth Cinema Project, a filmmaking mentorship program now operating in 21 California school districts across 61 classrooms. YCP brings professional filmmakers into English classes to guide students from concept to screen over a full school year. The results — in test scores, reclassification rates, graduation, and lives redirected — are impossible to ignore. Find ALIFI at latinofilm.org. Arts integration in schools has been underfunded, undervalued, and cut first for decades. This episode is the case against that pattern — told through data, two schools that are outperforming their affluent neighbors, and a story about a kid living in a motel who just won Best High School Actor.

Tired of words in your podcast? Not enough mimes? Have we got the episode for you. Charming guest Annie Farwell joins us for our most descriptive improvised musical yet, complete with corporate clowns, mermaid minxes, objectional object work, and more. You're trapped in a box - with Charm Scene! Annie Farwell is a Chicago-based writer and performer, known for breaking in improv scenes and dancing whenever possible. She's Midwest as hell. To celebrate St. Paddy's a couple weeks ago, she drank a frozen Irish coffee before taking a stroll in 65 degree weather and had to go home due to heat exhaustion. Her family is her rock, as she's the proud auntie to three little rascals and the annoying little sister to two patient, much smarter sisters. Last year, Annie made her parents be the monologists in her self-produced improv show called Loveseat, where her parents told the story of how they met and how her mom is really good at basketball. You can catch her on Voila! The Improvised Musical (at various locations) or catch her in Marquee at the iO Theater! Cast: Lily Ludwig, Austin Packard, Annie Farwell Music Director: Sam Scheidler Drums: Chris Ditton Charm Scene is performed entirely by humans in sunny Chicago, IL. In listening to this show, we hope you continue to support live human art wherever you find it. Stay charming!
On this morning's show, Ian was joined by the now legendary David Gray for a chat and a very special live session. David brings his 'Past and Present' tour to Ireland in June, with dates in Cork's Marquee, Dublin's Fairview Park, and Belfast's SSE Arena, and tickets for all dates are available on Ticketmaster. It's worth noting that White Ladder is STILL the biggest-selling album in Irish Chart History! What a record to hold. Listen back now to hear the interview and the stunning live performance. Sit back and enjoy.
*First off I want to apologize for the low-fi audio quality as I was unable to be in my studio the day we recorded. There is something in me that feels kind of old school pirate radio/ish about the quality in this time of over production and master AI prowess. This was a lovely chat with a true trail-blazer. Steve was the first person to lobby and advocate for Disclosure Day and ending the Truth Embargo around this information going back three decades now. Mr. Bassett shall be hitting the circuit starting this weekend and I do hope you get a chance to check him out in person this spring and summer as the times have never been this charged with the real potential for the flood gates to finally open... The truth is out there and soon to be at our preverbal fronts doors. Here is a winding conversation with the wonderful Polina Rud about her book and journey. Death. Deeply Meaningful. Play the Game. Life. Snakes and arrows. Analysis. Intention. Connection. Below is the about section from Polina's website and below that is the link to gain access to all her offerings, including links to purchase the book. "MY MISSION ISto help people move beyond a victim mentality and recognize that, despite appearances, the universe operates with a deeper justice. By understanding the archetypal structures of the psyche, we gain clarity on how our internal patterns shape our experiences, the obstacles we create, and the paths available for transformation.Through my projects—whether in my self-exploration book, socially engaged art, NGO work with life defenders, or the translation of transformative literature—I provide tools for people to decode their psyche, understand their unconscious strategies, and recognize the fears and insecurities that shape both their own and others' actions. When we truly know ourselves, we develop compassion—not as a sentiment, but as a vital skill for social health."Polina's Website: https://polinarud.comTips are most welcome:buymeacoffee.com/niishOur website:https://thecosmicsalon.comI want to thank the producers of this show:Meredith Walako (Scheduling, bookings, and social media manager). Whooping, whistling, punching the air, standing on the arm-rests and generally adding our voice to the sound of the crowd this week involves … … the creepy way Google eavesdrops our conversations … the cleverly positioned “secret” on McCartney's new album … why a knackered piano made Keith Jarrett's Cologne Concert a success … Daryl Hannah, Mick McCarthy, Ray Manzarek: people who hated the way they were played in biopics … Pectoralz? The Rain? Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem? Abandoned band names moratorium … how movies are still revolve around white-hat heroes and black-hat villains … “Festival Seating” and the days when suffering was part of the entertainment … why Zappa thought bands exploited live audiences … “Jackson Browne In Concert”: when going to gigs was like going to the movies … plus Blink 182, Big Audio Dynamite and the days when the Marquee had two front rows of plastic seating.Help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Hosted on Acast.
