Visit www.localocean.net for details on the Fin & Feast dinner with Andrea at Local Ocean in Newport. We go back to December 2024 and our converation with Andrea Falaschi, ahead of his visit to Oregon for the Oregon Mailata and special Fin & Feast dinner at Local Ocean in Newport. Joining us this week is Andrea Falaschi, fourth generation butcher from Macelleria Falaschi in San Miniato in the heart of Tuscany. Andrea's family business is celebrating its 100th year in 2025. Andrea takes us through his family history with some anecdotes about how the business started back in 1925 with his great Grandfather Guido emigrating from Argentina with no reading and writing skills to open San Miniato's first butcher shop. Moving through Fascism in Italy we hear about the discord between his grandfather Vasco and Vasco's brother Bruno, and you must hear the segment discussing Vasco's fear of the phone when that technology became commonplace!! Also, Andrea talks about the influence women in the family had on the business. Andrea, with interpretation assistance from his dear friend Astrid Ensign, who designs Portland Food Adventures trips to Italy, shares some of the challenges of the business, including the severe conditions in Italy through the pandemic. He is a huge lover of cinema, and Andrea shares the joy he had visiting the Goonies house when visiting Oregon earlier this year, as well as some of his favorite experiences in Oregon. How does this relate to Portland? Well, here. Two ways!: Andrea will be the marquee guest at the Oregon Mailata in May of 2025, the Italian Festival of the Pig put on by renowned chef Portland chef Cathy Whims and her team. The event takes place on March 22 and tickets can be found here, where you can see his exciting butchering demonstration, in addition to many other workshops, wine tasting, and a big celebratory meal put on by some of Portland's best chefs. VISIT ANDREA IN TUSCANY!! This!! A very few select folks can book a trip to Tuscany in the Fall with RATF host Chris Angelus' Portland Food Adventures, and celebrate Macelleria Falaschi's 100th anniversary with Andrea and PFA's Astrid Ensign, former expat, and host Chris. Maria Kelly released her second album Waiting Room on February 28. The followup to 2021's The Sum of the In-Between, the title is a very real place as Maria found herself stuck in sterile clinics hoping for answers to inscrutable chronic pain, and a dream-like, surreal space representing her own inner world. “This album is an exploration of the roadblocks, both internally and externally, that keep us feeling powerless and taking away our agency,” she says. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, we talk about her health issues, the impact of the housing crisis, and channeling those experiences into creating Waiting Room. We also discuss her living room tour, supporting Tom Odell at Live at the Marquee, facilitating her writing night Tangent Dublin, and more. Spring Training is in full swing and enough of it has passed that Sammy Sosa showed up, so Tom Loxas is here to talk about it. Sammy's there passing along his wisdom to the young players ("Don't take $80,000 to a hotel lobby in a towel") and a guy only slightly younger than him is taking grounders at third base. But Matt Shaw is nearing his return while Nico Hoerner has already been ruled out of the games in Japan. Marquee got some expected bad news from Comcast, and their right-wing broadcast partner is trying to sue them to get out of their deal, how will this impact the Cubs cash flow? Meanwhile, ESPN and MLB have broken up, which means this is the last year of Sunday Night Baseball. Thank God. The guys also talk about the SNL 50th special and underrated cast members. And they finish up talking Bears free agency and the always exciting NFL Combine. All that and more.
3 days in a row, the status of Matt Shaw for Opening Day has flipped. Now Bruce Levine and Marquee are saying Shaw will play in games soon, and this leads fans to believe he might be ready for the Japan series afterall. Which reports should we trust? No musician is more closely associated with London or left more footprints than Bowie, and you can trace its influence on his life and work (and vice versa) through a series of landmarks from the suburbs to the centre. Author and curator Paul Gorman has just published an annotated street-map – David Bowie's London - listing the places that played a formative role in his world and music, the places he rehearsed, performed, filmed and recorded, the homes of friends and managers, his schools and the addresses where he lived, worked and was photographed, made connections, bought clothes and generally raised the temperature. We talk here about many of those old haunts and the stories attached to them, which include… … mysterious manager Ralph Horton who got him to change his name to Bowie and then vanished from the face of the earth. … the fate of Heddon Street, home of K-West and the Ziggy phone-box. … Marc Bolan refusing to let him sing at an all-night benefit at Middle Earth. … “the Fairy Godmother of the New Romantics” at the WAG Club. … when Lionel Bart came to Haddon Hall. … Bowie and Steve Marriott auditioning for the Lower Third. … how he levered his way into a Fabulous magazine fashion shoot. … “the end of the age of Showbiz”: performing Chim Chim Cher-ee at the Marquee when at a crossroads between rock and roll and cabaret. … the magical piano at the Trident Studios. … a chance encounter with the otherworldly Vince Taylor whose ‘UFO map' helped inspire the concept of Ziggy Stardust. … the legend of Mr Fish, creator of the man-dress on the cover of The Man Who Sold The World. … the days when people had a white Rolls Royce and matching Alsatian – and “the Great Sarong Scare of the ‘90s”. … and various fringe figures including his art teacher Owen Frampton, Konrads agents Bob Knight and Eric Easton, muse and heartbreaker Hermione Farthingale, producers Shel Talmy and Tony Hatch (“the original Mr Nasty from Opportunity Knocks”) and slum landlord and racketeer Peter Rackman. Lon and Derek discuss Brad Underwood's recent jabs at Derek's jump shot and brainstorm ideas of how the two can settle things on the court. Later, Derek and Kyle share their thoughts on Illinois' upcoming resume opportunities and whether Illinois still needs to add a true marquee win.
The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the Peristyle Podcast's basketball-focused podcast -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) breaking down the Women of Troy claiming another marquee road victory, ending a six-day road trip with a come-from-behind 79-74 victory over No. 8 and previously undefeated Maryland. The No. 4 USC women's basketball team is 15-1 on the season and remains perfect in Big Ten after getting a hard-fought win when it seemed like everything was against them. Stars JuJu Watkins and Kiki Iriafen each scored 21 points, but it was the collective efforts of 'The Others' that led the Trojans to the victory with three freshmen stepping up at various times and senior Rayah Marshall closing out the game with elite defense. Shotgun and Connor look at all aspects of the top 10 victory, briefly discuss the Trojans' 50-point win at Rutgers and look at the USC men's back-to-back losses to Michigan and Indiana that played out in similar fashions with a short-handed Trojan squad fading down the stretch. They also look at where the men and women's programs stand after a week returning to Big Ten action in the new year. The podcasting duo also looks forward at the upcoming matchups for the men and women. The men face a pair of teams with complete opposite identity as they continue their Midwest trip with a battle against defensive Illinois and former Trojan Tre White before returning home to take on high-octane Iowa. The USC women get a much deserved return home to face off against Penn State and Northwestern. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts!
