It's those Family Ties that can really choke the life out of you...In theatres tomorrow June 12th for a limited run before it hits VOD (and eventually Shudder), we get to look at a beautifully bent piece of cinema from one of Canada's up & coming storytellers who isn't afraid to get a little bit bent. It's time for 'The Voices of Our Mother'.When a family matriarch falls seriously ill, relatives gather and discover their shared ancestral ties bind them in unexpected ways. From Writer/Director Mark O'Brien who you might remember as an actor from memorable turns in films like 'Arrival' and 'Nuremberg' and his debut feature 'The Righteous' gives us a horror laden family drama that is steeped in some of the classics from the past.We talked about his inspirations, working with a Canadian icon like Sheila McCarthy, his appreciation for his collaborators but locally and internationally and we got a little 'Basic; about our love of movies on physical media and so very much more.'The Voices of Our Mother' is in theatres now and on VOD platforms on June 19th

Her published novels include Camera Ready, Princess Smile, and For Position Only, which was a BookLife by Publishers Weekly Editor's Pick, and Summer's Blood, which received the coveted Kirkus starred review. An advertising and PR executive, Adele spent most of her career on the Las Vegas Strip, an experience that gave color to her latest novel, Slipper Girl. She is currently working on the sequel to Slipper Girl as well as Deadly Sins, a collection of short stories. Adele owns a marketing consulting firm in San Diego, California, where she resides with her husband and two cats. In my book review, I stated Slipper Girl is a contemporary fiction by Adele Royce. Although this is the second in the series, one doesn't have to read the first book to know what is going on in the second. We meet Skylar, a Vice President of Marketing, but soon learn she has a past she'd rather keep hidden. And she's able to do just that until her estranged mother shows up in Las Vegas and threatens to topple everything Skylar has built. I loved Skylar, the self-made woman who feels she must be perfect to atone for her past. And then, when her past came blasting in, I instinctively understood that she felt she had nowhere to turn. When blackmail and deception come rushing in, she doesn't know who to trust, so she simply trusts herself - even when I was begging her to call her father! If you love a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat, has redemption and resilience, and shows you that family bonds are not to be messed with, then you'll love this story! The hosts open with jokes and weekend recaps, including dates, grilling, cleaning, and taking kids to Dave & Buster's, before discussing how social media and good weather create pressure to go out. They reflect on attending funerals, how Black communities try to celebrate life, and how extended family traditions and reunions are fading, leading many to “make” their own family while navigating tense relatives. "Did I do that?" Yes, in fact, he did. After a successful career as a writer on hit sitcoms like "Mork and Mindy," "The Nanny," and "Married with Children," podcast guest Alan Eisenstock managed to step from television writing rooms and reinvent himself as one of the publishing industry's most sought-after collaborators. His most recent books include New York Times best-selling memoir Life's Too Short, written with Darius Rucker; Hang Time: My Life in Basketball, with NBA legend Elgin Baylor; the crime novel Flipping Boxcars, with Cedric the Entertainer; and the just-published memoir Arsenio, with comedian and pioneering talk show host Arsenio Hall—an immediate New York Times best-seller. "It was great, it was lucrative," he writes of his television career, which included a memorable turn behind the scenes of the ABC sitcom "Family Ties," where he came up with one of the most famous catch-phrases in television history—delivered in almost every episode by the show's breakout character Urkel, played by Jaleel White. "But I longed to return to my first love, writing prose, seeing my words in print, full-time." Join us for a conversation on what it takes for a writer to leap from the top of the Nielsen ratings to the New Releases table at the local bookstore, and to give enduring voice to some of our leading artists, athletes, newsmakers, and influencers. Released in 1985, Teen Wolf was a low-budget teen comedy (around $1–1.2 million) directed by Rod Daniel and starring Michael J. Fox. Filmed primarily in California, the production leaned into practical effects, with extensive prosthetic makeup used to create the film's now-iconic werewolf look. At the time of filming in 1984, Fox was already gaining popularity from Family Ties, but had not yet reached full movie-star status. The film became an unexpected box office hit, grossing over $80 million worldwide. Its release shortly after Back to the Future significantly boosted its visibility, helping turn it into a VHS-era favourite. While critical reception was mixed, audiences connected with its blend of teen comedy and fantasy, and it has since earned a lasting cult status, even spawning an animated series and later adaptations.TRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISIn a quiet town… where high school is a battlefield… one teenager is about to discover that fitting in… is overrated. He's not the star athlete. Co-hosts Faridah Abdul-Tawwab Brown and Frank Abdul Shaheed return after about a year to launch a new season of The Family Ties Show: A Prescription for Society, thanking listeners and explaining their hiatus, including Frank's emergency surgery that temporarily affected his speech and required rehabilitation. They frame the family as an instrument and “pair” that supports society and extend this to the “human family,” arguing that global and local events are interconnected and should be evaluated by their impact on family and human dignity. Frank describes how heavy snowfall prompted neighborly support, while Faridah shares her new work with a human rights organization in Mississippi and a sobering visit to Medgar Evers' home, noting a plaque was replaced after being hit by gunfire amid neighborhood violence. They invite audience engagement as they discuss serious, faith-informed reflections on today's polarizing challenges.00:00 Season Return Greetings00:43 Yearlong Hiatus Explained01:24 Surgery And Recovery02:34 Family As Human Lens03:51 Snowstorm Neighbor Lessons05:37 Faith Guidance And Signs08:10 Invite Audience To Join08:47 Politics Through Family10:23 Human Dignity Framework12:09 Medgar Evers Home Visit15:17 Mississippi Reflections17:07 Season Vision ClosingThis podcast is about family life as a means to address current problems in American society. It was November 15, 2004, 52-year-old Peter Porco woke up like he always did: early, well before his alarm, with a few minutes to gather his thoughts in the quiet of his Delmar, New York, home. Peter was a fixture in the local legal community, serving as a state Appellate Division court clerk. Peter got out of bed, walked to the bathroom, and stood at the sink. He then made his way to the kitchen to pack his lunch for the day, just like any other workday. He always enjoyed the quiet mornings before the day started. He performed his morning routine like he always did. He started to load the dishwasher. He packed his lunch. He even wrote a check to pay a parking ticket. Peter was known as someone you could count on to be there every day, doing his job no matter what. So when Peter failed to show up to work, one of his coworkers was sent to his home to check on him. When he arrived at the Porco home, something immediately stood out. The house was eerily quiet, the blinds drawn. He tried calling the landline. No answer. He called the police. Officers arrived on the scene and approached the front door. He noticed something strange: a smear of blood on the doorknob, small droplets trailing down the porch. The front door was slightly ajar. With a sense of dread, Officers opened the door. And that's when he saw it. Peter Porco was on the ground, his face covered in blood and his eyes wide open. Peter was dead.
