My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is DR Shores, author of the book Shallow Stock. Raised on the Yorkshire coastline in the United Kingdom, D R Shores studied engineering prior to a twenty-five year career in business. Literature has always been a passion, with a taste ranging from Sigrid Nunez and Thomas Harris to established twentieth-century classics from Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ayn Rand and Milan Kundera. Now living with his family and introverted dog in the east midlands area of England, his other interests include music, current affairs, volunteering and keeping fit.   In my book review, I stated Shallow Stock is a suspense thriller that will keep you reading well into the wee hours of the morning! I loved the story and the intricate plotlines. As an author, I was also intrigued by how all the threads came together in the end.   The story has a Hatfield and McCoy vibe. Two families are at 'war' and have been for several generations. They each own a competing corporation and work tirelessly to out do one another. Wynter McGlynn is the CEO of one. Julian Dayton is the CEO of the other. Both currently have issues holding onto their positions of power and see the other as their biggest obstacle. The competition is fierce, but is it fair? And what happens when the finger pointing starts?   From black tie balls to crooked politicians to a city-wide triathlon to human trafficking to board meetings to interesting family dynamics, this book will lead you down a road you won't want to miss. And even when you think you've gotten the very last surprise, Shores finds a way to offer you a tidbit more. "Satisfaction" RevisitedJulia Roberts and Liam Neeson are mere supporting players in the 1988 dramedy Satisfaction. Originally created as a vehicle for Justine Bateman (of "Family Ties" fame), the film quickly stalled at the box office. Film critics didn't necessarily sing the praises of this tale of a cover band of misfits, either. But now, decades later, were we too hard on this summer romp? Will the musical numbers now have us yelling, "More cowbell"? And can Liam Neeson be any cuter? The Old Roommates hit the dance floor and give it all a revisit through their middle-aged lens. Levi opens up about his experiences with record deals, the importance of social media, and the influence of his family, including his mother, Becca Stevens, who runs the impactful organization Thistle Farms.Tune in as they discuss songwriting, collaboration, and the unique bond between Levi and his father, Marcus. Plus, get a glimpse into Levi's personal life as he shares exciting news about his upcoming wedding!Listen to Unbroke: (https://ffm.to/seunbroke). About Levi Hummon:Singer-songwriter Levi Hummon spent his early 20s practicing his art, but his immersion into country music started much, much earlier. From the day he was born, his father Marcus Hummon, (one of Nashville's most prolific GRAMMY-winning songwriters [The Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts]) immersed Levi in the music scene, and It didn't take long to realize the apple didn't fall far from the tree. At 24, Levi began releasing music of his own. Cleancut and compelling, he told stories of love and loss while building a loyal fanbase that has grown with him through every bend and break. As a Nashville native who was inspired by the legacies around him and had an undeniable gift of songwriting, it was no surprise that 5 years, 30 released songs, and 100 million streams later as an independent artist, Levi had created a name for himself. In 2021, his viral Walker Hayes collaboration sensation “Paying for It” cemented Levi's status as a rising country star. This sparked a new sense of confidence both on stage and in writing rooms that allowed him to discover the magnitude of his potential as an artist, and a new authentic version of Levi emerged. His follow-up tunes, “Bottled Up,” “For Me,” “Good Riddance,” and “Drink On” are the product of just that. Hummon says, “taking risks, finding my own voice, and showing the scars and roughness around the edges allowed me to portray the most honest version of myself”. Coming off of his first headlining tour in the Fall of ‘21, Levi found himself to be in high demand in the spring and summer of 2022. Warming up the stage for acts like Hardy, Jordan Davis, Brett Eldridge, Brett Young, and Dylan Scott, he was able to experience in person the effects of this momentum and the reward for being unapologetically himself. While listeners across genres are creating the demand now more than ever for both a 90's country comeback and an early 2000's alternative rock revival, Levi's new music has established a unique lane paved by boLET'S BE SOCIAL:Follow Levi Hummon:Instagram – (@levihummon)TikTok – (@levihummon)Facebook – (@levihummon)Website -- levihummon.comFollow Diving in Deep Podcast:Instagram –(@divingindeeppod)TikTok – (@divingindeeppod)Twitter – (@divingindeeppod)Facebook – (@divingindeeppod)Follow Sara Evans: Instagram – (@saraevansmusic)TikTok – (@saraevansmusic)Twitter – (@saraevansmusic)Facebook – (@saraevansmusic)Produced and Edited by: The Cast Collective (Nashville, TN)YouTube – ( @TheCastCollective

Stuck In The Middle - A Gen X Podcast

Why do I feel so guilty, Slackers? In a recent podcast, Tom Morello and Billy Corgan discussed a number of topics, but when Billy talked about  "Gen X not having a second act” and Tom said he had “Punk Rock Guilt”, this really struck a chord with me.Growing up in the ‘80s and ‘90s—amid economic flux, cultural cynicism, and punk's rebirth via hardcore and grunge — gave us a somewhat strange worldview. In 1989 Family Ties ended while Seinfeld just started to air. We went from wholesome to cynical in the blink of an eye.Morello talked about the uneasy feeling of raging against the system only to end up part of it - is that just an inevitable part of growing up or have we somehow let our younger, more idealistic selves down?As a parent I often wrestle with whether I have done the right things for my kids. And I certainly lament my restless, rudderless youth. This episode is a reflection on my own personal (and Gen X's) struggle to reconcile our hedonistic, yet oddly idealistic, youth with the quiet regrets of middle age.

Today I have the immense privilege of speaking with Lucia Field. Lucia grew up with her family in Sydney, but with her dad, Anthony, as the original Blue Wiggle. It's not the childhood you might imagine. As the Wiggles became global superstars, Lucia didn't see her dad for nearly nine months a year. Instead, Lucia grew up alongside her mom, her brother, and her sister, dancing and dreaming of becoming a ballerina. And it was not just a dream. Lucia's star was already on the rise. And by 13, she was accepted into the Australian Ballet School. In this exceptionally beautiful and humbling conversation. Lucia talks candidly about her childhood, what it's like to know your dad through the television and the challenges that come with moving away from home so young. Lucia then bravely speaks about body image issues that still exist in ballet schools today, including her own experience of being told to lose weight. And with that, her decision to ultimately walk away from ballet altogether. We talk about the grief that comes from leaving something you love, the unexpected phone call in which she was asked to join The Wiggles, how she deals with social media and managing her mental health, and the joy that comes from getting to know your dad as a young adult.Lucia continues to work and tour with the Wiggles now wearing the Blue skivvy alongside her dad, but also the likes of Evie Ferris and Zaha Hawkins. For tour dates and tickets, head to the wiggles.com, and to continue to follow all of Lucia's incredible adventures you can find her on Insta @luciawiggle. We're halfway through the decade and sitcoms are starting to rule the airwaves!  Audiences are losing interest in the rich folks of Dynasty, Dallas, and Falcon Crest as they fall in love with the likes of Tony Micelli, Alex P. Keaton, and America's favorite gynecologist, Dr. Huxtable.  This episode takes a closer look at classics like The Equalizer, Family Ties, and Alice while also having fun with Courtney Cox's failures, Charles Durning as the patriarch of a black family, and the saga of Claudia Wells. Navigating Modern Society's Challenges Through Humor and PerspectiveKey Takeaways:Traffic woes and societal complaints: Analyzing exaggerated perceptions of traffic delays and public complaints against empirical data.Family dynamics and societal taboos: Exploring the unsettling realities and reactions to complex family relationships.Truth and perception disconnect: Examining the societal trend of prioritizing narratives over factual truth and evidence. The Traffic Conundrum: Perception vs. RealityTraffic is a fact of life, especially during major events. As discussed in the "Nightly Rant," hosts Mike and Torya dive into the public's perception of increased traffic disruption caused by a Formula One event. Mike observes, "It was literally 50% longer," questioning the hyperbolic claims that people endured hours-long commutes. This theme captures a broader societal issue: the exaggeration of personal inconveniences without acknowledging the truth backed by empirical evidence. Torya adds an insightful counterpoint, "They have trackers in the ground that tell them how long it takes a car to get from one point to another," highlighting how local authorities possess real data, contrasting with skewed personal anecdotes. The conversation drives home a critical message: Discerning truth in the age of digital storytelling requires more than taking personal accounts at face value. This theme underscores the need for society to differentiate between legitimate complaints and exaggerated storytelling, evaluating information with a critical eye.Untangling Family Dynamics: Reality or Fiction? The transcript takes an unexpected turn with a jaw-dropping scenario from an online post about complex family relationships. The post describes an intricate web of familial connections, including a grandmother's alleged pregnancy by her grandson-in-law. Although Mike and Torya's reaction is one of disbelief, they acknowledge the possibility of such dynamics existing, likening them to a "hillbilly hell."This section reflects on how society reacts to and processes taboo subjects. Torya's remark, "This sounds like that. Like this kind of shit would happen that you end up with aunt, uncle, stepchild, ex, granny, shenanigan," highlights the bewildering nature of crossing conventional family boundaries. It invokes introspection into how societal norms influence our understanding of morality and relationships.Beyond the initial shock value, this discourse probes into society's discomfort with incestuous relationships and the ethical challenges they present. The hosts convey the absurdity of the situation through humor, yet they address the broader implications: What does this say about societal norms, and how do individuals navigate these complex webs of relationships when they occur? The Narratives We Embrace: Debating Truth in Modern TimesIn today's society, the lines between truth and perception often blur. The transcript reveals a commentary on how narratives, particularly in media and politics, have taken precedence over established truths. As Mike laments, "Truth is what you make it, not what it is," reflecting the pervasive trend of subjective realities where facts become malleable. This theme resonates with the growing concern about misinformation and the reluctance to accept evidence-based truths. Torya mentions, "The receipts exist for everything now," reinforcing that concrete evidence should guide our beliefs and actions. However, societal resistance to accepting evidence remains a significant barrier, as people cling to constructed narratives that align with their biases. This discourse offers a profound reflection on the necessity for critical thinking and the importance of evidence-based reasoning. The challenges posed by this disconnect are vast, affecting societal trust, individual relationships, and political landscapes. Mike and Torya effectively illustrate how the embrace of narratives over facts can fundamentally alter societal functions.Revisiting the Themes and Presenting New InsightsThroughout the transcript, Mike and Torya engage in a lively, candid discourse that offers more than just banter. Their discussions underscore key societal challenges, from discerning truth amidst hyperbole to questioning family norms and confronting subjective realities. As is evident, the conversation on traffic delves into the reliability of personal anecdotes contrasted with factual data. The quirky family dynamics discussion challenges societal taboos, urging reflection on perceptions of morality. Lastly, their reflection on truth aligns with a sense of urgency to advocate for evidence-based decision-making in society. In aligning humor with thoughtful critique, Mike and Torya provide a valuable lens into modern societal dynamics. They encourage readers to ponder not just the absurdities of daily life but the underlying truths about how society processes information, relationships, and beliefs. Emphasizing a blend of skepticism, humor, and critical analysis, their dialogue serves as both an entertaining and enlightening journey into the multifaceted nature of contemporary life.TimestampSummary0:00Traffic Woes and Economic Impact of Formula One in Vegas3:52Navigating Challenges of Recording and Directing with Glasses4:30Bizarre Family Dynamics and Internet Absurdities8:19Truth, Perception, and Society's Decline11:06A Lighthearted Podcast Wrap-Up With Listener Engagement

Hey, Slackers!Ever miss the old TV guides? I know I would love to look at that crazy grid and plan on what to watch during the week. Thanks to TVTango.com, you can find pretty much every TV listing going all the way back to 1950.While we were raised on the "Big Three" networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC, there was another network before FOX was launched in 1987 - The Dumont Television Network, which ran from 1946 to 1956. But that's a little before our time.Throughout the episode we will jump around from the 60's, through the 90's, with particular attention paid to Tuesday and Thursday night programming. ABC dominated Tuesdays, with NBC controlling Thursdays.Oddly, for a period of time in the 1960's, one hour dramas would start at the half hour, which seems so strange to me. For most of my life, those TV dramas often aired in later timeslots, often starting at 10:00 PM. Who programs a drama to start at 8:30 or 9:30!? What were some of your favorites? And do you recall shows like the Yellow Rose or Riptide?

The list of descriptors to accurately depict Luke Harbur, a.k.a. musicbyskippy, would rival Santa's gift list, so I'm only touching on a few here. He's a son, a brother, a transplant survivor, an artist, a producer, a beatboxing specialist, an entrepreneur, a wonderful human being, and he's my guest for Episode No. 150.Luke's stuff all lives at musicbyskippy.com, but you can also find him on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Threads, Apple Music, Spotify, etc.Luke and I talked about family, life experiences, career visions and dreams, the creative process, and a bunch more. Somewhere in that mix was a short list of a few of his favorite albums. Those were these:Vampire Weekend's Contra (2010)The Human Condition (2016), Jon BellionJ. Cole's KOD (2018)Meeting Luke and learning a little bit about both his journey and his trajectory was an absolute delight. Please consider taking a moment to check him out. Give him a follow, and subscribe to his newsletter.A few corrections: Family Ties, not Facts of Life. Sheesh. In that show, Stephen and Elise are the parents, not the dads. Double sheesh. And, Happy 2025 to you all. Not 2026 (yet). Lord...Anyway, Merry Christmas to you all, and a Happy New Year.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. Justine Bateman is not a fan of generative AI like Sora. The actor / director says GAI tech is simply the latest algorithmically-driven nail in Hollywood's coffin of content – but something else will be born from its ashes. “… audiences will eventually feel sick about watching AI, and about all the ways in which AI will have infiltrated their lives, their job, their kids' education, their grocery store, their insurance, etc., and they will begin to reject it wholesale,” Bateman writes in Fast Company. “Audiences will then not only reject films made with GAI but reject films that even look like they were made with GAI. They will want something real, raw, and obviously human.” Justine Bateman is an actor, director, author, and founder of the Credo23 Film Festival. She starred as Mallory Keaton in Family Ties and appeared in Desperate Housewives and Californication. Her directorial debut Violet, starring Olivia Munn, premiered at SXSW 2021. She authored bestsellers Fame: The Hijacking of Reality and Face: One Square Foot of Skin. Bateman serves on SAG-AFTRA's AI negotiation committee.
