Today on the Good Music Show - we make another drastic format change to discuss a "Good" Music Movie! Brick by Br...err I mean Piece by Piece is a LEGO animated documentary about the life and career of PHARRELL WILLIAMS. Directed by Morgan Neville, and starring several artists who've worked with Pharrell, we dissect the central question surrounding this movie: why?Joining us is LEGO film expert Danny Vincent, who also happens to host a few great podcasts as well. Danny V guides us through the film's journey, and we ask the hard hitting questions that everyone wants to know. Is Kelis mentioned? Do they show the hat? How much do they reveal about Williams' relationship to Chad Hugo? All of that plus extremely dated discussions of our Super Bowl predictions, Grammy's recap, and thoughts on the Lilo and Stitch teaser (not the trailer which has since come out).Link to Piece by Piece Soundtrack PlaylistPlease check out Danny Vincent's podcasts at the links below:Looking for the Ocean: A Pixar Journey: a podcast about everything Pixar with episodes featuring Danny and Julius! It Happened One Podcast: a podcast about relationships in movies! The Snub Club: a podcast about film history!Danny's Letterboxd Page: chock full of a ton of great reviews!Send us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! Crédits de l'épisode :- "Crie hie" (Eugene Fredy / Jérôme Rastello)- "Shake it off" (Mariah Carey, Jermaine Dupri, Bryan-Michael Cox, Johnta Austin)- "Get your number" feat. 100 MINS of game chaging tracks from The Neptunes!
This week, we're doing another anniversary episode, and this time we're celebrating the anniversary of Kelis' debut album, Kaleidoscope. With her colorful hair and punk attitude, she literally burst onto the scene screaming "I hate you so much right now!" backed by the sounds of Chad Hugo & Pharrell Williams, aka The Neptunes. We get into how this album is a mix of several genres rather than just straight R&B. With its collage of electronic, funk, hip hop and rock influences, Kelis and The Neptunes gave us an album with a sound that we hadn't really heard before, and it kicked off a production style that continues to this day.Click here to buy the "I Hate You So Much Right Now" shirt that we mentioned in the episode. If you enjoy the content that we're making and you're looking for ways to support our independent podcast, here's a little something that you can do:Please leave us a 5 star rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podchaser or Goodpods. You can also drop a few coins in our tip jar here: https://ko-fi.com/troypodcast if you're feeling generous. If it's merch that you're looking for, check out our store, Nuthin' But A Tee Thang, at teethang.comSpreading the word about the show to your friends and family helps too.Sign up for our monthly newsletter, Liner Notes. However you choose to support, know that it is greatly appreciated as always.
Pharrell Williams is a Grammy-winning songwriter, producer, and performer. Getting his start in music alongside Chad Hugo as the production duo known as The Neptunes in 1992, Pharrell has produced chart-topping hits for artists including Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Snoop Dogg. He has co-composed the music for the Despicable Me film franchise, including hit “Happy,” which became the best-selling song of 2014 and earned Pharrell an Oscar nomination. Pharrell's collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, and Gwen Stefani, alongside his work as a solo artist and frontman for alternative band N.E.R.D., have solidified his reputation as a creative force in the music industry. With 13 Grammy wins and two Oscar nominations, Pharrell continues to progress the sounds of post-new jack swing, R&B and rap, and pop. Currently, Pharrell serves as the creative director of Louis Vuitton, and he has recently announced his role as a co-chair for next year's Met Gala alongside Lewis Hamilton and Anna Wintour. In October, his animated biopic Piece by Piece, a collaboration with LEGO, premiered alongside its titular song by Pharrell. The film is now available for rent or purchase to enjoy at home. The latest lego movie - Piece by Piece - that is for some reason a story about the life of Pharrell Williams has hit theaters in the US and will have a bit of a slow theatrical rollout globally over the next few months. I was lucky enough to see the film just a little early thanks to the BFI London FIlm Festival which just wrapped up, with this film being the Closing Night Gala. I have a very soft spot in my heart for Lego but to say I was bamboozled when this announcement was made and when the trailer came out, confirming that this film was actually real, is an understatement. But, was the movie actually good? You can find out in this review! Piece By Piece: Directed by: Morgan Neville Written by: Morgan Neville and Jason Zeldes and Aaron Wickenden and Oscar Vazquez Produced by: Nicholas Cooper, Morgan Neville, Caitrin Rogers, Mimi Valdés, Joshua R. Wexler, Pharrell Williams Executive Producers: James DeJulio, Sanjee Gupta, David Lawrence, Keith Malone, Shani Saxon, Jill Wilfert, Lesley Worton Music by: Michael Andrews Editing by: Oscar Vasquez, Aaron Wickenden, Jason Zeldes Cast: Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay Z, Snoop Dogg Synopsis: A vibrant journey through the life of cultural icon Pharrell Williams told through the lens of LEGO® animation.
M. Teezy & Dimitri discuss new music such as GloRilla's “Glorious” album and if her debut met expectations after taking a huge leap as one of the bigger artists out today, Pharrell Williams' “Piece By Piece” soundtrack and how we need his relationship with Chad Hugo to be repaired ASAP, J. Cole's “Port Antonio” track and what it all must mean as we continue to anticipate “The Fall Off” and so much more!
Pharrell Williams is—well, let me just say, he's a big reason why Song Exploder exists. He's a singer, songwriter and producer, and in the 90s, when I first heard the work that he was doing with the Neptunes, which was his production duo with Chad Hugo, it blew my mind. It made me want to know where those sounds came from and where those ideas came from. Pharrell has won 13 Grammys. He's been nominated for two Oscars. He's produced iconic songs for Kendrick Lamar, Britney Spears, Clipse, Gwen Stefani, and so many others. And on his own, he's made songs like “Happy,” the giant hit for Despicable Me that was the best-selling song of 2014. And now, there's a movie about his life called Piece by Piece. But it's an animated Lego film. For this episode, I talked to Pharrell about the title song from Piece By Piece. So, coming up, you'll hear how Pharrell built that song, including a first draft that never saw the light of day. You'll hear how he built “Piece by Piece” by programming it, on his own, with MIDI instruments, and then adding and replacing those parts with other musicians, including the high school marching band that he used to play in. For more, visit songexploder.net/pharrell.

From making t-shirts in his granny's kitchen to opening up the first black-owned streetwear shop on Fairfax in LA, Gavin knew early on that his connection to being creative ran deep. While that first shop, YOUth, eventually closed...Gavin started making hats and giving them out to people not worried about making money. The more hats Gavin gave out, the more they would end up in the most unlikely places, including on Chad Hugo of the Neptunes and Aleali May. This ultimately led to the creation of Supervsn, a brand dedicated to putting out good energy. Today, Gavin's curiosity continues to lead to new opportunities and new education. Including his latest collaboration with PacSun, a portion of sales will go to the STUDIOinitiative, whose mission is creative wellness, mentorship, and inspiring the future of young creatives.Co-Founder of Claima and Former Nike Marketer, Bimma Williams interviews leading and emerging creatives and entrepreneurs of color about how they were able to build their own tables by turning their hobbies, side hustles, and ideas into thriving small businesses. From these stories, listeners will learn how to claim their dream careers by stepping into the world of entrepreneurship. Featuring Melody Ehsani, Jeff Staple, James Whitner and more. B. Cox looks back at Virginia rap duo Clipse's major label debut album Lord Willin' as it turns 20. The group, made up of brothers Gene "Malice" and Terrence "Pusha T" Thornton grew up in Virginia Beach and were close associates of producer Pharrell Williams growing up. After securing their first record deal with Elektra Records in 1996, their first album Exclusive Audio Footage which was scheduled to come out in 1999, was shelved when their first single failed to catch onto the charts. In 2001, Pharrell, then a successful producer as one-half of The Neptunes (with Chad Hugo), signed Clipse to his Star Trak Imprint. With an album completely produced by the Neptunes, Malice and Pusha T spit hard life tales of hustling and drug dealing over the innovative production. The first single "Grindin" became their most recognizable hit and became a classic known for its infectious drums and the duo's street wise hustle lyrics. The album was certified gold and established Clipse as an up and coming group to watch out for. It also helped to establish a new brand of "coke rap" in the 2000s that would become popularized and continued by some of their contemporaries later in the decade.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesSterogum-Lord Willin' Turns 20https://www.stereogum.com/2196772/clipse-lord-willin-turns-20/reviews/the-anniversary/Soul In Stereo: Ranking the Best Songs on Clipse's "Lord Willin'"http://www.soulinstereo.com/2022/08/ranking-the-best-songs-on-clipses-lord-willin.htmlGenius: Ever Since "Lord Willin'", Clipse Have Been Grappling With The Sins Of Their Pasthttps://genius.com/a/ever-since-lord-willin-clipse-have-been-grappling-with-the-sins-of-their-pastSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In the first three years of Britney Spears' pop music career, she released annual, consecutive albums. In 1999 we got Baby One More Time – its lead single was #5 on the Billboard year-end Hot 100 chart. In 2000, Oops… I did it again created multiple hits, but it's eponymous single only reached #55 on the year-end chart. Destiny's Child, Aaliyah and Janet all outperformed Britney. The sound of pop music was changing and Britney needed to change with it. So in 2001, she released her self-titled album Britney. When we hit play on our metaphorical discman, the skittering beats of “I'm A Slave 4 U” suggests a significant musical transformation. Enter Spears' Virginia Beach era. Britney signaled that she's moved beyond the Swedish-produced pop polish for an entirely new sonic identity just as she left behind the ingenue character for the first two albums. Working with the Virginia Beach-based duo The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo), on “I'm A Slave 4 U” Spears evolved her sound to sit aside the the R&B sounds of her chart peers. Now with a soundtrack of off-kilter beats and harmonic dissonance, Spears needed a new vocal approach. We hear this transformation in the opening line: “I know I may be young.” She begins with a breath and a half-whispered vocal. As she propels into the verse, we hear some of Britney's unforgettable tone: controlled vocal fry and rhythmic percussiveness. But there's no sign of the ballad-style singing from her earlier hits. Instead, she sing-speaks through the song. The melody is loose because as she says, “dancing's what I love - now watch me.” This is not a sing-a-long, this is a dance song and the introduction of a whole new musical era for Spears.
