On episode 151, we're teleporting back to 1995. If you had a 5-disc CD changer in the whip, chances are you had Dah Shinin' in one of those slots.   Tek and Steele announced their presence with authority on Enta da Stage in '93, then dropped the classic Bucktown b/w Let's Git It On single in early '94, which had everyone patiently waiting for their album.  In January '95, the wait was over and Dah Shinin' immediately became a favorite. With their witty harmonizing 1-2 punch, along with the Da Beatminerz, Dah Shinin' was classic upon first listen and the birth of what we now know as the Boot Camp Clik.  We're joined by General Steele, as we go track-by-track with him on Dah Shinin'. Learn all about your favorites, whether it's Timz 'n' Hood Chek, Sound Bwoy Bureill, Bucktown, Hellucination, Let's Git It On or Cession at da Doghillee. Steele shares intimate details about the making of every track, including the remixes and some non-album cuts.  Steele also shares some hilarious and fascinating stories about recording @ D&D Records, Buckshot, Sean Price, working with Mary J. Blige and of course Tupac Shakur.  If you're a Smif-N-Wessun fan or a Boot Camp fan, you're not going to want to miss this episode!   Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal Online store: https://take-it-personal.creator-spring.com/ (enter BUCKTOWN for 25% off) www.takeitpersonalradio.com

B. Cox and J Owe look back at Black Moon's debut classic album Enta Da Stage as it turns 30. The Brooklyn trio made up of DJ/producer DJ Evil Dee and emcees Buckshot (fka Buckshot Shorty) and 5ft began their journey in high school, shopping around demos and looking for a deal. Impressed by the group, they signed with Nervous Records and was given the green light to record their first single "Who Got Da Props?".Featuring smooth samples with crisp drums and impeccable cuts, the album spun tales of life in Brooklyn and with Buckshot and 5 ft expertly wordsmithing pictures that painted a dark picture for listeners and observers.Featuring the likes of future Boot Camp Clik mates Smif-N-Wessun, Dru Ha and Havoc from an also upcoming rap group Mobb Deep, the album featured a similar motif and sound like other groundbreaking New York-based rap albums like Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers, Midnight Marauders,The Sun Rises In The East, Ready to Die and Illmatic over the next 12 months that have been credited with helping to bring a focus and emphasis back to East Coast hip-hop in the midst of a dominant West Coast run.The album, while not selling well commercially, was widely acclaimed by fans, particularly underground heads and the media alike. It is consistently listed one of the best albums in the phenomenon that was 1993 in hip hop and also noted as of the most influential hip-hop albums of the 90s.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Black Moon's 'Enta Da Stage' Turns 30https://albumism.com/features/black-moon-debut-album-enta-da-stage-album-anniversaryMedium: 30 Years for Black Moon's 'Enta Da Stage': A Game Changer For Hip-Hop https://medium.com/@ShamarieKnight/30-years-of-black-moons-enta-da-stage-a-game-changer-for-hip-hop-c2c8ae65dcdfHipHopDX: Duck Down Records Founders Buckshot ad Dru Ha Reflect 'Enta Da Stage' 25 Years Later https://hiphopdx.com/interviews/id.3160/title.duck-down-records-founders-buckshot-dru-ha-reflect-on-enta-da-stage-25-years-laterSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this in-depth interview, Host Cril talks with "General Steele" of renowned Hip Hop Duo "Smif-N-Wessun". The discussion begins with the inspiration for Smif-N-Wessun's latest LP "The ALL" and takes it back to how the group came to be. Steele gives dope insight into how he originally met members of the distinguished Boot Camp Clik, reflecting back on their days of coming up in Brooklyn. Our Host "A-Level' was not present for this show but sent in some intriguing questions about the 1995 Source Awards and what is was like for Smif-N-Wessun to be a part of the Award nominations that year as well as the tense scene with NY hip hop meeting artists of the South and West Coast for one of the first collective times. Steele also took time to talks about his relationship with the Late Great "Sean Price" as well as his experience working with the Late Great "Tupac Shakur" as well. This interview clocks in almost close to an hour including so much more topics and takes on a really relaxed vibe. Much Props to General Steele for granting us the time to build and big ups to Tek who wasn't able to be present for the interview on both releasing what I consider to be one of the very best Hip Hop albums to come out this year entitled "The All". It definitely is sure to make my top 10 if not top 5 and already one of my favorite "Smif-N-Wessun" Albums of all time. Be sure to check out the full audio interview here, on spotify or itunes as well as on our Out Da Box Radio station and look for the video soon on youtube. Special thanks as well to Cynical for hooking up this wonderful interview, shout to Taliagem for recording the video and assisting in the interview and thanks to Cast Sound lab studios for the recording space. Enjoy!

Today's guest is Rap Group ILL RUCKUSBioThe culture of Rap and Hip-Hop has expanded over the years in both positive and negative ways. To its credit, it has provided a voice to the downtrodden and disenfranchised, allowing people to share their struggles and triumphs. Others however have used the art form to glorify violence and materialism. Styles vary wildly but for the men of Ill Ruckus, their beats, rhymes, and wordplay are all about bringing the positive vibes back to Hip-Hop, one song at a time. Ill Ruckus got its start before it even knew it existed as its core members were friends since childhood. Though the number of people in the group has fluctuated since it was officially founded in 1999, it’s presently working comfortably as a trio. Sidd, Mr. Smiff, and Valdeast have enough years and shared experiences behind themselves that they don’t just consider themselves a musical trio; they’re a family. Growing up in and still based out of Lexington Park, Maryland, the area itself is known for its long standing cultural roots, and strong military presence. It’s the kind of place that can instill strong, humble values into you while still exposing you to some of life’s harsh struggles. It’s these struggles though that have pushed Ill Ruckus together and made them one of the hottest up and coming groups in the area. It helps that all three of the members have their own individual style that’s been cultivated over years of living life and writing about it. Sidd brings to the table his musical studies, being an accomplished saxophonist and pianist. Though he’s normally a quiet person, music allows him to express himself. Mr. Smiff also brings with him his own musically gifted ear, combined with a good deal of life experience from his strong community roots. Valdeast has the benefit of being a devoted family man, one who’s as humble and loyal as he is passionate about music. That family devotion helps serve as a constant reminder to Ill Ruckus of the positive impact music can have, and the audience that needs empowering music in their lives. Given their distinct personalities and tastes, it’s no surprise that the trio would be inspired by a number of different Rap & Hip-Hop acts including such legendary East Coast rappers as Biggie Smalls, Wu-Tang Clan, Redman, Mobb Deep, and Nas, along with the massively influential West Coaster Tupac and the also highly respected, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. It’s because of all these styles and interests coming together, that even though Ill Ruckus can be compared to some of their influences like the Wu-Tang Clan, they’ve also drawn comparisons to the late great Big L, Styles P, G-Unit, and Boot Camp Clik. Through years of tremendous hard work and dedication both in and out of the recording studio, Ill Ruckus is finally starting to make waves in the industry. Their debut EP has been a long time coming, but they’ve already landed featured placements on several Coast 2 Coast Mixtapes including Next Up Vol. 200 & 206 as well as Hottest In Maryland: Mixtape Vol. 2. Their homegrown website, www.seasonedvetts.com is home to two of the completed tracks, “I’m Sick” and “Spazz On ‘Em” which is complete with its own music video. Combined with their successful live performances, Ill Ruckus’ music is speaking for itself in terms of its quality and message. This is just a small step towards bigger things for Ill Ruckus as the trio continues to build its reputation amongst fans and other musicians alike. Sidd, Valdeast, and Mr. Smiff are entertainers in the truest sense in that they feel it’s their job and goal to use their God given talents and abilities to positively affect the lives of others. Their music is independent in every way; it comes directly from them and they’re taking every effort they can to push their music forward from Maryland to the rest of the world. The only reason their music exists as it is right now is because they’ve never given up on it or their prospective audience. Their performances and recordings continue to grow better as a means to bring better music to the people willing to love and support independent artists. Being entrepreneurs as well as entertainers, Ill Ruckus has big plans for the future. As their music continues to take hold amongst audiences they plan to use those sales to create their own studio. This would allow them to continue to be completely independent but utilize even better equipment and create even stronger sounding releases. This would be an exciting addition to the already growing list of responsibilities the trio handles for themselves. Not only do they craft their own songs but they also handle the production, promotion, event planning and networking with other bands and area businesses for gigs. It’s not an easy list of jobs, but it’s all in the name of music and all for trying to bring something positive and wonderful to audiences. Ill Ruckus won’t rest until their music can reach the ears of the world and bring to them the positive vibes of struggle and triumph that Rap and Hip-Hop can convey so well. Through years of hard living, raising families, and perfecting their musical craft, Sidd, Valdeast, and Mr. Smiff are in the best position yet to accomplish their goals. Behind the strength of material like “I’m Sick” and “Spazz On ‘Em” Ill Ruckus has big things on the way and it’s their hope that their music can find a way to entertain and empower you.http://www.illruckus.com/index/Hear this podcast on Googleplay, TuneinRadio, iTunes, Spreaker, Youtube, and iHeartradioPodcast weekly broadcast location:Rockafellas Barber Shop (Owner: Rico Rodriguez)1733 Babcock Rd. General Steele (birth name Darrell A. Yates, Jr.) is an American rapper, famous as half of the underground rap duo Smif-N-Wessun, and as a member of Hip Hop supergroup Boot Camp Clik. Career-Steele and Smif-N-Wessun partner Tek made their debut on Black Moon's classic 1993 album Enta Da Stage on the tracks "Black Smif-N-Wessun" and "U Da Man". The duo was signed to Buckshot's Duck Down management, and released their debut single "Bucktown" in 1994, followed by their debut album Dah Shinin' in early 1995. The release was influential over the New York City Hip Hop scene of the mid-1990s and is now hailed as a rap classic. The duo soon changed their name to the Cocoa Brovaz due to a lawsuit from the Smith & Wesson firearms company, and released their second album The Rude Awakening in 1998, featuring the singles "Won on Won", "Black Trump" and "Bucktown USA". After the temporary demise of Duck Down Records, the duo signed to Rawkus Records, and appeared on a number of Rawkus releases, including the Soundbombing II compilation, the Lyricist Lounge 2 compilation, the Lyricist Lounge III compilation and Talib Kweli's Quality album. The duo returned to Duck Down Records for a 2002 Boot Camp Clik effort The Chosen Few. In 2004, Steele released a solo mixtape titled Amerikkka's Nightmare, a release which was heavily politically influenced. Tek and Steele returned as Smif-N-Wessun in 2005 for the release of their third album Smif 'N' Wessun: Reloaded. Steele is featured on the Boot Camp Clik album The Last Stand, released on July 18, 2006. In 2010 Steele released Amerikkka's Nightmare Part 2, which again featured heavily political lyrical content. Steele is also the older brother of fellow Boot Camp member, Top Dog, who is part of the Originoo Gunn Clappaz. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the Rock of Heltah Skeltah interview session! Man oh man oh man oh MAN. For Meeks and Doe, this podcast is easily best thing ever - especially this week - as we managed to nab an interview the legendary Rock of Heltah Skeltah & the Boot Camp Clik! After 23+ years of being in the game, Rock dropped his debut solo LP this fall - “Rockness A.P. (After Price).” We had a lengthy chat with Rock about his journey in releasing the record, what it’s like in today’s climate versus the 90s and what you can expect from the Rockness Monsta with this debut. Of course we get into a little history as well - Duck Down, Heltah Skeltah, Dru Ha, Buckshot and his PNC Sean Price to name a few, not to mention an insane story about him and Sean meeting Big Pun and the collab that almost happened! There’s a LOT more where this came from, so go ahead and cop “”Rockness A.P.” NOW, and after that push play on this here interview and be thankful for what is ALWAYS that #smithsonian #grade #twiceaweek  // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #DJ #mix #interview #podcasts #ATL #BROWNSVILLE #WORLDWIDE Recorded live November 12, 2017 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks

Brooklyn, New York City. Home of fancy coffee shops, expensive condominiums, and trendy neighborhoods. But in 1995, Brooklyn was not synonymous for “gentrification.” Back then, Rudy Giuliani was Mayor of New York and he was in the midst of a serious war against crime. In 1995, Giuliani’s New York registered its lowest crime rate since the 1970s. From 1,156 homicides then to roughly 300 homicides now, the Big Apple has come a long way. In the heart of Brooklyn stood the “Doghilee,” stomping ground for the crew known as the Boot Camp Clik. BCC, which helped spearhead New York’s hardcore rap scene, was comprised of four unique groups: Black Moon, Smif N Wessun, Heltah Skeltah, and O.G.C. Emerging with Black Moon’s seminal debut album, Enta Da Stage, BCC cemented their status with Smif N Wessun’s debut, Dah Shinin. Released January 10, 1995, Dah Shinin is celebrated for the synergy between Smif N Wessun’s two members, Tek and Steele, and the cohesive, gritty production courtesy of Da Beatminerz. In 1998, The Source placed the album in its list of 100 Best Rap Albums. What You're about to hear is Tek and Steele take us through the backstory and the making of their quintessential classic. They talk about: - Their relationships with Biggie and Tupac - Going to high school with Maxwell and Sean Price - Being inspired by the work of Roy Ayers - And what the Doghilee actually was. This is "You Must Learn." "You Must Learn" was produced and edited by Peter Oasis, written by Dharmic X and executive produced by Evan Auerbach of @upnorthtrips. Special thanks to Dru Ha and Duck Down Records for the love. "You Must Learn" was recorded in your mothers basement next to your favorite blogger somewhere in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Back in the mid 90's Brooklyn was well represented in Hip Hop.  At the top was none other than The Notorious BIG.  But not everybody in BK was feelin Biggie's Versace and Dom P. rhymes.  So the fans that were into that underground gritty army fatigue/timberland stomp you in the face Hip Hop gravitated towards The Boot Camp Clik.  The crew which consisted of the groups Black Moon led by the legendary Buckshot, Originoo Gunn Clappaz, Smif N Wessun, and Heltah Skeltah were the independent NYC underground kings at the time.  With production handled by Da Beatminerz, their label Duck Down Records was definitely a major player in the game.  Their movement eventually caught the attention of 2pac who spent his last days recording with the crew for an album that was supposed to unite both coasts.  After Pac passed the label went through some up and downs only to resurface as strong as ever with a new generation of MC's to carry the torch.  So this a little something to pay homage to the Boot Camp Clik and Duck Down Records.  I'll eventually make a part 2 of this with the newer generation of Duck Down so look out for that.  Enjoy.(Parental Advisory)

I For this post I let the people decide the next mix I put up.  After going through all the votes a 2Pac mix was the winner.  I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the large majority of the people that visit this site are from California but it's all good.  Thanks again to everybody that gave their ideas and some of them I do plan to do in the future so keep checking back.  But anyways this was really easy because i'm also a big fan of 2Pac.  I was actually the only one in my whole crew that really listened to 2Pac.  Being from Virginia you didn't hear a lot of him on the radio partly because of the whole east coast west coast situation that was going on at the time but that's another story.  These are some of my favorite songs by Pac and most of them are actually east coast influenced.  Before 2Pac signed with Death Row Records, 2Pac worked with a lot of East Coast producers like Easy Mo Bee, Stretch (RIP), and so on.  Also right before he died he was working with Buckshot, The Beatminerz and the whole Boot Camp Clik so his style was really a mix of both coasts in my opinion.  So here it is and if you're listening to this at work be careful because you might want to snuff someone in the face or start a new revolution in your office.  Peace. * For Promotional Use Only  - DJ Mike Rizzy

As you can tell from the title, this was our first-ever live show. We streamed our show live via ustream.tv and had a chance to get some real-time interaction with our audience via the chat. The whole experience was tight and we hope to do more shows in a live format in the future. The episode got off to a good start as we caught up with Capital Z, the winner from Episode #58, to talk about his track "Family Ties", and his loyal fan base (he set a HoodHype record for most votes). After that, we had a chance to speak with Brooklyns own Joell Ortiz. Right from the jump we took the opportunity to squash any misinformation surrounding our previous interview with Bishop Lamont. With that aside, we got into what projects Joell will be dropping next, what hes looking for in his next label situation, working with Rik Cordero, his hoop game and more. After hollerin at Joell, we got to speak with another one of Brooklyns elite, Buckshot from the Duck Down camp. Buck gave us the scoop on The Firm
