Rosy is a passionate advocate for mental health, and is currently working in corporate mental health and pursuing a psychology degree at university. Raised in Hawke's Bay, she enjoyed a happy childhood in a loving family. However, about four years ago, despite doing all the things that are supposed to help with mental health, Rosy began experiencing symptoms of depression. This struggle was compounded by a sense of shame because her life seemed perfect on the outside. As her depression intensified, Rosy felt increasingly isolated and hopeless. She eventually opened up to her mother and sought help from a psychiatrist, who diagnosed her with depression. This diagnosis, while daunting, allowed her to begin her recovery. Through her journey, Rosy learned the importance of sharing her experiences. Initially, she began speaking openly about her struggles with her family and then with a trusted colleague. Over time, she found that the more she shared her story, the easier it became, and the feelings of shame and embarrassment started to fade. Rosy continues to advocate for open conversations about mental health, encouraging others to share their stories and seek support. Her story reminds us that mental distress does not have a “look” and that your feelings are valid, no matter what your life looks like.    Need Support? Findahelpline.com

Mekaylar's story reflects the complexities of growing up as a first-generation New Zealander and facing cultural and family expectations. From a young age, she faced relentless bullying at school—physically, verbally, and psychologically—simply for being different. As a child navigating a strict household, Mekaylar struggled with the pressure to be perfect in everyone's eyes, balancing the dual roles of a tough, ideal daughter and a stand-in caretaker for her siblings. Her early life was shaped by these demands, leaving little room to express her struggles.   Mekaylar faced significant trauma, including sexual abuse, PTSD and chronic illness, and eventually sought help through counselling. This pivotal moment allowed her to understand and process her emotions, and create a safe space to talk openly about mental health. Mekaylar speaks out about the importance of treating your mental illness like a friend rather than a disease, and maintaining faith that you will find people who uplift and support you. She is a strong advocate for Pasifika communities and for challenging outdated ideologies that often prevent open dialogue around mental health. Need Support? Findahelpline.com

In today's episode, hear about growing cut flowers six stories above the San Francisco Bay Area with Joanna Letz of Bluma Flower Farm @blumafarm. Hear what it's like to grow flowers in a bustling metropolis, differences between field and rooftop growing, and some of Joanna's favorite varieties. We discuss the advantages and challenges (yes, there are weeds up there) of farming on top of a building in the city. As both farmers and cities realize the benefits of urban agriculture, hopefully there will be more opportunities for growing crops on rooves, and we hope this episode will give growers the confidence to make the leap!We were inspired by Joanna's example of hyper local production, cutting the flower miles on her blooms down to almost nothing by growing in the city where many of them will be enjoyed. As we look for ways to cut down on the amount of transportation that goes into food and flowers, we want to encourage growing on rooftops and other city spaces that we don't often think of as productive farmland. As an added bonus, green rooves can help mitigate urban heat islands and help reduce flash flooding by absorbing some of the water that would otherwise run off. Whether you've ever wondered how to get into rooftop growing, or just wondered what it's like to grow cut flowers over a bustling metropolis, give this episode a listen. In Shop Talk with Neversink Farm @neversinkfarm we chat about new tools, old tools, how they can benefit your farm and tips to use them successfully with Conor Crickmore of Neversink Tools, which manufactures tools for farmers. In this episode of Shop Talk, we discuss how to know when seedlings in paper pots are ready for transplanting. If they are planted too soon, seedlings may not be fully rooted and can fall out of the pots during transplanting. If you wait too long, the paper pots may start to break down before they are transplanted, and roots and tops may become tangled, making transplanting difficult. We talk about how to find the sweet spot for paperpot transplanting success in this Shop Talk segment. Thanks to our collaborator on this podcast Neversink Farm. Ever since Israel's current government proposed a judicial overhaul that would render the Israeli Supreme Court powerless to strike down legislation, protesters have been flooding the streets. The current moment in Israel is one of tremendous anxiety and fear for the future of Israeli democracy, but it is also a moment of reckoning and of hope, as Israelis are showing up en masse to stand up for their visions of what Israel could be. In this episode, recorded in front of a live virtual audience earlier today, Monday, March 27th, Yehuda Kurtzer unpacks several different stories that are contributing to this moment in Israeli public life, and explores what the legislation and the protests might mean for the future of the Jewish people.

Back after a brief sabbatical, we pick up our deep-diving trawl through Stephen King's oeuvre with one of my new favourite writers, Matt Wesolowski. Here's some blurb: - "Matt Wesolowski is an author from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK. He is an English tutor for young people in care. Matt started his writing career in horror, and his short horror fiction has been published in numerous UK- and US-based anthologies, such as Midnight Movie Creature, Selfies from the End of the World, Cold Iron and many more. His novella, The Black Land, a horror set on the Northumberland coast, was published in 2013. Matt was a winner of the Pitch Perfect competition at the Bloody Scotland Crime Writing Festival in 2015. His debut thriller, Six Stories, was an Amazon bestseller in the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia, and a WHSmith Fresh Talent pick, and film rights were sold to a major Hollywood studio. A prequel, Hydra, was published in 2018 and became an international bestseller. Changeling, the third book in the series, was published in 2019 and was longlisted for the Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year. His fourth book, Beast, won the Amazon Publishing Readers' Independent Voice Book of the Year award in 2020. Matt lives in Newcastle with his partner and young son, and is currently working on the sixth book in the Six Stories series. Chat to him on Twitter @ConcreteKraken." What it doesn't mention is the Matt is also a huge Stephen King fan, with a special place in his heart for the Peter Straub/Stephen King novel Black House. We take a trip to French Landing and discuss serial murder, sequels, hipster bikers, the Scott King novels and whether he will ever get a Stephen King tattoo before he runs out of space on his body. I really enjoyed this one, as you can probably tell. Matt's books are genuinely eerie in a way that is all too rare. I highly recommend you start your Six Stories as soon as you can right here Big thanks to fellow Wesolowski fan Stephen Leslie Parkes for his technical wizardry. At points in our lives, we might spend a lot of time telling stories which, if we were more aware, we might choose not to identity with. You might have heard people say “I will never do that; it's just not who I am.” This kind of fixed idea of identity normally limits our personal growth. Conversely, you might hear people say very similar things when they undergo a great ordeal - for example, being falsely imprisoned. “After all this, I still know who I am.” they tell us. These statements sound very similar, but they may be very different concepts of self. One speaks largely about habits and skills, and the other may hint at something deeper, perhaps at a person's values. When we identify with our actions, personality traits or even beliefs, it sometimes means that to transform, we must face a personality crisis. However, if we identify with something more fundamental such as values, that allows us more flexibility in how we act and think. What are the stories that you tell yourself? SailPoint's Mistaken Identity Podcast

Many people assume that there is some magic formula for success in identity. Is it having the right degree? Is it knowing the right people? Is it having a ”Particular set of skills?" Today on Mistaken Identity, we interview three sets of people who are imminently unqualified at first glance. They've come from outside the expected backgrounds, the expected channels: their stories vary widely, but they have all found themselves thriving within the identity space. Three pairs of people. Three sets of stories. Six unique journeys into identity. All on this single episode of Mistaken Identity.

"Mine!" is one of the first words babies learn. In every culture, ownership shapes every minute of every day of our lives. We think ownership is natural. We think it's obvious and simple, but that's not entirely true. There are hidden rules that determine who gets what and why: Whether you stand at the front of the line or the back, where you live, what you drive, where you park, what you can watch and listen to. Hundreds of times a day, we encounter the rules that decide who gets what. Ownership is always up for grabs... If you know the rules, that is. And once we start looking for these choices about ownership, we will see them everywhere. Fights over reclining airline seats, whether we can share HBO or Netflix passwords. Also big issues like climate change and wealth inequality. All these conflicts are driven by just a few simple, hidden ownership rules. And if you're not the one choosing the rules, someone else is choosing them for you. If we want to understand who owns our online life, whether we can solve climate change, how to battle wealth inequality, we need to understand how ownership really works. And my guest today does. Michael Heller is an endowed professor at Columbia law school and writes and teaches about who gets what. And he is the co-author of the highly anticipated book. Mine! How the Hidden Rules of Ownership Control Our Lives In this conversation with Michael, you'll hear: 02:40 - The most important thing for listeners to understand about ownership 03:36 - The hidden rules of ownership 05:21 - Economy class airplane seats and how big corporation engineered decisions create conflict for profit 07:24 - Ownership, the remote control of life 10:20 - Digital privacy and how we keep tech giants out of our private lives 11:45 - The Wild West of genetic data harvesting and the real reason why you get charged so little money to analyze your DNA 16:24 - What "Buy Now" really means 20:40 - Big issues with regard to ownership 24:35 - How South Dakota became the biggest global tax haven for the ultra wealthy 27:00 - How ownership as a cutting-edge engineering technology can help combat climate change 30:15 - Smashing the myth that "owning nothing reduces consumption" And much more! If your government turns on you, killing everyone in your community, only foresight and the guts to listen to it will help you. When widespread poverty and lack of hope destroy the fabric of reality, only fortune can save you. When you survive any or all of these traumatic events, you live to create the next generation.Cam and Tessa are the next generation.Raised by Holocaust survivors and refugees in New York City in the 1970’s, Tessa battles not only her own demons but those her family faced. She takes nothing for granted and relies only on herself as she navigates a dangerous and dark period of time in the city. Cam needs to escape the midwestern upbringing that began with his mother's journey from somewhere in Eastern Europe to an orphanage in Iowa and with his great grandfather’s early life in Ireland; and ends with his father’s spiraling and destructive behavior. Directionless and lost, Cam takes a risk to find his way.At a chance meeting, they discover that they are kindred spirits; and against the push from both sides, they clasp hands and decide to face whatever may come together.Woven dives deeply into events you learned about in history class and makes them personal. The Department of Tangents Podcast

Jimmy Tingle is one of the first people I interviewed in the Boston comedy scene years ago. He was hosting and producing a stand-up show on race relations that featured, among others, Patrice O'Neal and Sue Costello. During my twenty years covering this scene, Tingle has always been a community-minded guy, whether it's been as a theater owner for five years or his Humor for Humanity comedy benefit shows. So it wasn't a surprise when he declared his candidacy for Lt. Governor of Massachusetts in the Democratic primary last year. He eventually lost, but garnered 41.3 percent of the vote as a first-time candidate in the primary. His new show, 20/20 Vision, recounts his campaign, surreal moments like having Matt Damon and Paula Poundstone record robocalls on his behalf, and presents some of his out-of-the-box ideas, like using exercise bikes as a power source or windmills near highways to power traffic lights. Tingle is a political comedian, but he's never been a fire-breathing, tear-it-all-down satirist. He's always been optimistic and upbeat. It is no easy feat to look at the divisions in this country and offer optimistic solutions. I sat down with Tingle in the Podcast Kitchen and asked him how he remains so hopeful, the one time I ever saw him get angry in a political discussion, about his early days in the Boston and New York comedy scenes, about the campaign, how recovery inspired his political bid, how he believes in government, his cameo on VEEP, and a lot more. You can find out more about where he's going to be and what he's up to at jimmytingle.com I am very pleased to present you with this week's featured tracks, excerpts from the audiobook of Nathan Ballingrud's latest collection, Wounds: Six Stories from the Border of Hell. Ballingrud has a remarkable imagination and a delicious vocabulary. Take the subtitle seriously – these are lovingly rendered tales of the horrific. Severed heads with lolling tongues that induce a feeling of violence in anyone around them. Angels who tear apart their hosts to be born into this world. And child-eating ghouls. About that last one. You may have heard rumors about Jonathan Wormcake. About how he and his friends attacked the Cold Water Fair in 1914, what he does up there in that mansion, about how the children are drawn there by ghastly visions. Maybe some of it is true, but Wormcake is dying, and he'd like to set the record straight on a few myths about ghouls and how the Skullpocket Fair came to be before he goes. And that brings us to the beginning of “Skullpocket,” one of the six stories in Wounds. You can find him at nathanballingrud.com or on Twitter under @nallingrud. He'll be a guest on the podcast next week Audio excerpts courtesy of Simon & Schuster Audio from “Skullpocket”, read by Danny Campbell in the compilation WOUNDS by Nathan Ballingrud. Thirty-four episodes clean and counting! Nick and Alastair kick off with talk about brief recent encounters with kid assassin comic Deadly Class, by Rick Remender and Wes Craig, and apt podcast-based crime novel Six Stories by Matt Wesolowski. Then it's time to get down to business with Ben Wheatley's warehouse gun battle movie Free Fire (6:51), followed by a check back with highly acclaimed X-Men-related TV series Legion (20:15). Did it keep that weird quality up for the whole season? Thirdly, it's the first two issues of The Old Guard (36:31), a new comic about immortal soldiers by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez. Lastly, what did Nick think of classic movie Run Lola Run (46:50)? And if he'd seen it at a slightly different time, would his whole opinion change?

A pre-Christmas gift of an episode this week, as the boys are joined by an extra special pair of guests. First, they discuss the new entries into the Oxford English Dictionary. What does Brexit really mean? Is YouTuber a secret insult? And tell tales of old people swearing. Also up for discussion, Amazon Drones and what it means for book sizes, leaving the house, and small children and pets being squashed by technology. Kate Moloney of Bibliophile Book Club joins us to discuss her two books of the week. She recommends Six Stories by Matt Wesolowski and Rupture by Ragnar Jonasson. She also gives us a preview of her books of the year. Star guests this week are Andy Martin (of Reacher Said Nothing fame) and the incredible Lee Child. They discuss being watched as you write, whether Lee feels it is different experience, and the sexual proclivities of famous writers. Also, Lee talks about Reacher's upcoming twentieth anniversary of being published, only writing a single draft, and Tom Cruise playing a tall bloke.
