Ep. 436 Amar Peterman - Loving Your Neighbor Across Real Difference

Shifting Culture

In this conversation, Amar Peterman and I get into the slow, local, unglamorous work of becoming neighbors across real difference. We talk about the table as the place where the common good gets built, and why so many of us are far more comfortable playing host than being hosted - flinging our doors open without ever considering who actually walks through them. We get into hospitality as displacement, an accompaniment that refuses to leave, Thomas learning you can't reason your way to resurrection, and an imagination that can see life where everything around us insists there's only division. Here's the challenge: we have to learn to receive before we can ever give, to love people beyond their labels, and to start right where we are, with the one neighbor in front of us.Amar D. Peterman is a constructive theologian working at the intersection of faith and public life. He is the founder of Scholarship for Religion and Society LLC and the former assistant director of civic networks at Interfaith America. Peterman holds an MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary and is currently a PhD student at the University of Chicago Divinity School. His writing and research have been featured in Sojourners, Christianity Today, The Christian Century,The Fetzer Institute, The Berkley Forum, and more. He also publishes regularly on his Substack, This Common Life.Amar's Book:Becoming NeighborsAmar's Recommendations:Make Your Home in this Luminous DarkGlimmeringsConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@shiftingculturepodcast.comGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. "“Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself,”1 ranks as one of the most repeated verbatim command phrases in the Bible. We frequently forget, however, that this wisdom has two parts: loving our neighbors and loving ourselves. A central part of life's journey includes finding a healthy balance or harmony between caring for ourselves (self-care) and engaging in acts of sacrifice to help others. For those who take their religion seriously, these choices often are often informed by their faith." Kyra Nielson reads the article, "When Loving Yourself Meets Loving Your Neighbor," which was originally published in Public Square Magazine on September 25, 2023.

Have you ever found yourself replaying someone else's words, assuming they were judging you? Or maybe you've caught yourself criticizing someone in your mind, convinced you're seeing the situation clearly. If so, you're not alone. This week on The Love Offering Podcast, I sat down with my friend Shannon Popkin to discuss her new book, Kinda Judgy: Finding Mercy for Myself and Others in Six Stories of the Bible. Together, we explored a topic that many of us struggle with but rarely talk about openly—judgment. What if the criticism we feel from others is often rooted in our own insecurities? What if the harsh standards we apply to others reveal places in our own hearts that need God's healing mercy? Through powerful stories like Jonah, the thief on the cross, and the woman caught in adultery, Shannon reminds us that while God is a righteous Judge, He is also abundantly merciful. His mercy changes how we see ourselves and how we see others. One of my favorite takeaways from our conversation was this: we often feel judged and become judgy in response. But Jesus shows us a different way. Though He was wrongly judged, He responded with compassion, forgiveness, and grace. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why judgment and insecurity are often connected• How contempt quietly damages our relationships• What Jonah's story reveals about our own hearts• How God's mercy transforms the way we treat others• Why the cross is the ultimate picture of love and compassion Friend, if you've ever struggled with being critical of yourself or others, this conversation will encourage you and point you back to the heart of God. When a faith built to bless the nation gets quietly diverted into power, the most dangerous act left to the church may be refusing to whitewash the story and choosing instead to become a communion of genuinely unlike people. On the eve of a national prayer rally rededicating America to God, Mark Labberton joined The Jim Wallis Podcast to ask whether Christians who invoke the nation's name are following Jesus or drifting from him. Together with Jim Wallis, Mark reflects on what it means to choose Christ alone, love the neighbour, and refuse a faith fused to national power. They discuss the evangel versus "evangelicalism," the church as a communion of unlike people, worship in a black church, American exceptionalism as theological crisis, and racial gerrymandering after recent court rulings. Episode Highlights "I want to be evangel-centric and not be caught up in the icalisms of a history, a pattern, a habit, a sociology that has often been diverted from the evangel into power—political, social, economic, racial power." "Paul's giving us a vision of the church that's a communion of unlike people. We know a lot about a communion of like people. But a communion of unlike people is meant to be one of the hallmarks of the church." "I can't be a Christian alone, but I also can't be a Christian that matures if I'm a Christian only with people who are like me." "Worship of our country, or the exceptionalism of leaders of our country—these are completely foreign to the body of Christ and to the theology of the kingdom." "It's really like subverting reality by renaming it in a way that's euphemistic, that's literally whitewashing." Light is a language, and learning to read it - in a darkened theater, in the stories of your neighbors, in the films you were told to avoid - helps us see clearly. In this conversation, Jeffrey Overstreet and I talk about cinema as a spiritual practice, what it looks like to love your neighbor by actually watching their films, why the filmmakers he was told to fear have shaped his faith far more than he was told they would, and why pursuing truth and beauty on the big screen has a way of leading us back to Jesus.Jeffrey Overstreet is the author of two film-focused memoirs—Through a Screen Darkly (2007) and Lost and Found in the Cathedral of Cinema (2026)—and the four-volume fantasy series The Auralia Thread. Hello, hello, and welcome to another episode of the Red Couch Theology podcast. Hey, this week we talked about Sunday's sermon where Alex kicked off our neighboring series and we talked about how difficult this actually can be to learn to love our neighbor as ourselves. What if our neighbor is the worst, and if, like we learned on Sunday, our neighbor. Is anyone around us in proximity to us? Are we really expected to love people who harm us or abuse us? What's that even mean? And what happens if we don't love ourselves? How are we supposed to love our neighbor if we don't love ourselves in the first place? We deal with some of these questions along the way, and let's dive right in.Send in your questions: https://redcouchtheology.com/

This episode of the Mountain Podcast centers on the biblical call to “multiply,” drawing from Genesis 1, Matthew 28, and Luke 10 to emphasize that every believer is called not only to follow Jesus but to actively make disciples through love, obedience, and everyday faithfulness. Samuel explains that spiritual fruitfulness is a natural result of a healthy relationship with God and challenges listeners to move beyond passive consumption of church services into intentional participation in the Great Commission—praying for others, sharing faith, practicing obedience, and showing compassion in practical ways. Through teachings on discipleship, humility, and the Good Samaritan, the message reframes multiplication as living out Christlike love in daily life, trusting God to reshape priorities, prune distractions, and mobilize believers to serve their families, workplaces, and communities with grace and courage.

What if the story of vaccines is really a story about protecting what we value most? We sit down with biomedical researcher Dr. Rob Balza to chart the arc from smallpox variolation to today's mRNA platforms, then push past headlines to the data that actually changes lives. Along the way, we face the hard questions Christians are asking: how do we balance stewardship of our bodies with love for immunocompromised neighbors? What does “personal choice” mean when disease spreads before symptoms? And how do we weigh decades of clinical evidence against the pull of a compelling anecdote? We break the science down clearly. Attenuated and “old school” vaccines trained the immune system with weakened pathogens; mRNA vaccines use a temporary set of instructions so your cells make a single target protein, prompting immunity without the virus itself. We unpack trial results showing early high efficacy against infection, strong and durable protection against severe disease, and shorter infectious periods that can reduce spread. We also talk openly about waning antibodies, evolving variants, and why expectations should adapt as the virus changes.Trust is the other half of the story. We examine how mixed messaging about masks, politicized guidance, and recycled myths—like the debunked vaccine-autism claim—fractured public confidence. Then we turn to a sensitive ethical concern: fetal-derived cell lines used in research. Dr. Balza explains moral proximity, timing, and intent, clarifying that vaccines don't contain fetal tissue and that long-established lines don't require new abortions. Through a Lutheran lens of vocation and providence, we explore how God often works through ordinary callings—clinicians, scientists, and citizens—to safeguard the vulnerable.Come for the history; stay for the clarity. You'll leave with a grounded understanding of how vaccines work, how evidence should be weighed, and how faith can guide wise, neighbor-loving choices in a world where our decisions ripple outward. What does it really mean to love your neighbor—not just in theory, but in their mess? In this episode, I sit down with Austin Habash from Sent Evangelization, and we talk about what happens when we actually step out and meet people where they are. How knocking on doors leads to praying with strangers, and how helping with small needs opens the way for grace. Austin shares stories that are raw, beautiful, and deeply human. If you've ever felt the tug to do something more, to bring Jesus to your neighborhood in a real and personal way, this conversation will inspire you and give you a path forward. 311 – Do the people you love know you love them?Have you ever felt a deep sense of love and affection for someone, but they had no clue you cared so much about them? All too often someone feels unloved, while people actually do love them, but they never tell the person or express their love in a tangible way.In this week's episode we're going to talk about the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself from a little different angle: How to love people so they know they are lovedHow Jesus loved people so they felt his loveHow you can love people the exact way Jesus didDon't just tell people you love them, although that is important. Show them your love by how you treat them, how you listen to them, how you're patient with them, how you help them, and what you do unexpectedly to bring them joy.And the beautiful thing in doing this is, when you let someone know you love them and express that love in a way they feel loved, you will feel more love as well. ∞∞∞∞∞∞Previous episodes mentioned this week: Episode 4: Are You Afraid to Love as Much as Jesus Did? Episode 165: How Did Jesus Love His Disciples?Show notes: For a full transcript and all the Bible quotes, go to thebiblespeakstoyou.com/311Text me your questions or comments.I'm putting together a special program called Guilt Free Faith. This week, we're bringing you a special episode recorded live from the Restore gathering in 2024, where we were joined by Jared Halverson. This one one of my very favorite topics to hear Jared talk about. His session was on what he calls “contraries” or paradoxes that are inherent in a life of faith. His message feels especially timely this week. He offers the powerful image of the cross as a symbol of wholeness in our discipleship. One axis, reaching vertically, represents our connection to God, while the horizontal beam represents the love and care we extend outward to embrace those around us. True discipleship, Jared explained, is this centerpoint. It requires both beams—it's a deep grounding in God that inspires us to reach out in love to others. Jared's session feels like an invitation to love our neighbor. He boldly reminds us that the means matter, that "being right with God, does not justify being wrong with other people." So rather than allowing our differences to create distance, he challenges us to see the ways that truth is found in the tension of the paradox. This “both-and” approach allows us to see each other more fully and generously, creating connection that transcends our differences and reflects god's love. We're so grateful for Jared's wisdom in this session, and we hope his message helps you feel connected and inspired this week and we hope you'll join us at Restore this year where you'll hear Jared live. Learn more about Restore at faithmatters.org/restore

When Dan Hanneken started reading a bible in a prison cell, he had no idea how God's grace could offer a second chance for anyone willing to change. This is the final episode in our “Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself” series, and we end with the incredible story of how Dan Hanneken found God in an unlikely place. Host Shay Roush interviews Dan as he shares how his own journey, marked by addiction, three prison stints and a life-changing encounter with God's grace inspired him to create In2Action, a ministry that offers practical and relational support to men entering the community from prison. Dan's turning point was when he “broke up with God” because he believed that he couldn't try hard enough, memorize enough bible verses or be good enough to make his life better and stay out of prison. That's when he finally understood the deeper meaning of grace: your best efforts aren't enough to create and sustain personal transformation. Dan recognized that a relationship with God wasn't a means to an end, but that a relationship with God was the basis for finding his identity as a fully loved and accepted child of God. Taking a leap of faith, Dan founded In2Action, a faith-based nonprofit that supports men recently released from prison with housing, life skills, and community integration. Starting with a single rented house, the ministry now offers over 60 beds and a Reentry Opportunity Center, achieving a remarkable recidivism rate in mid-Missouri below 10% compared to the county's 43%. Dan recognizes that success goes beyond staying out of prison—it's about fostering belonging through creating community and opportunity for social transition. This remarkable story is a reminder that loving our neighbors by giving them a second chance allows them to rebuild their lives, find purpose and meaning, and come to understand the depth of God's love and the power of belonging in his family. Is it possible to end homelessness for veterans in your community? Megan Sievers is on a mission to make that vision a reality. In this episode of our series, Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself, Shay Roush sits down with Megan Sievers, Executive Director of Welcome Home, a Columbia, Missouri-based nonprofit dedicated to serving homeless veterans.  You may not realize that many who have given of themselves to serve our country face challenges that go unnoticed and deserve our attention. This conversation highlights how Welcome Home embodies this mission by supporting veterans in need.  Welcome Home began when Vietnam veterans, heartbroken by seeing their comrades die homeless, established a shelter in 1992 to provide a lifeline for veterans. Since then, this organization has evolved from offering basic shelter to comprehensive services like emergency housing, case management, and homelessness prevention, all rooted in a commitment to honor veterans' sacrifices. Megan shares powerful stories of transformed lives as Welcome Home addresses the complex issues veterans face, including PTSD, substance abuse, and isolation. Loving others well means bringing dignity and hope to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, because those who have served our country deserve our love and support in return. What if the key to loving your neighbor lies in meeting them with grace and compassion in their most vulnerable moments, no matter their choices? In this episode of our ongoing series Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself, host Austin Conner sits down with Cassidy Teter and Molly Cover from My Life Clinic in Columbia, Missouri, to explore a compassionate approach to supporting women facing unexpected or unsupported pregnancies.  No matter what your perception or personal experience with a pregnancy center might be, you will learn how offering evidence-based information, cost-free services like pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, STI testing, and personal counseling can provide dignity and care that women need when they're facing a difficult decision.  While social media is rife with misinformation about women who have had or are considering an abortion, Cassidy and Molly understand the emotional, physical, and spiritual complexities that women face. My Life Clinic is committed to being a consistent, loving presence, reflecting Jesus' heart of compassion, regardless of a woman's past or future choices. They also share incredible stories of how a mother's decision to protect and choose life can have a lasting impact for generations to come. In an effort to embody Psalm 147:3 which states that “God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds”, this episode will encourage you to love your neighbor by meeting them with grace, dignity and support, especially in complex and distressing situations like unplanned pregnancies.  To get more information about My Life Clinic, click here. Could “free prayer” transform your neighborhood?  In this remarkable episode of our “Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself” series, we dive into the transformative work of Love Columbia as host Lynn Roush interviews Jane Williams, Co-Founder and Executive Director, and Caroline Roush, Director of Communications.  It's true: Love Columbia grew from a simple gesture of offering “free prayer” to neighbors in need to a thriving hub for personal transformation in our community.  Jane Williams has always been passionate about loving others well, but it was the experience of encountering her own limits when she lost her eyesight 13 years ago that deepened her reliance on God and energized her mission to build a ministry that meets both the physical and emotional needs for the most vulnerable in our city. Now a thriving non-profit organization, Love Columbia provides a holistic approach to caring for those who need a helping hand. In this episode you will learn the secret to loving others well and the key elements needed for transformation: humility to acknowledge one's need for help, faith in God's provision, endurance to persevere through challenges, and social connectedness to build supportive relationships. You'll also hear how Caroline used to underestimate the power of listening, but has since learned that you need to understand a person's struggles and dreams before offering practical help, like financial coaching or car repairs.  If you want to be a force for good in your community, you'll be encouraged to know that transforming others with love always starts with one small act of faith, but can change the course of someone's life and create a legacy of hope that you could have never imagined.
