In the second week of our Vision Sundays series, we're unpacking what pastoring your people looks like for Bethel, as a community. How do you pastor a city? What role does each member play in the story God has invited us into? This message, shared by Gabe Valenzuela, is a practical guide for every believer who wants to be activated in their community, as designed by God. We are called to love our neighbor, to feed the hungry, and to represent Jesus to the lost. There are people in every community carrying burdens, deep pain, and a longing for something you're carrying—a relationship with the person of Jesus. We pray that you're encouraged as you listen and learn about what pastoring people looks like in our house and how you can strengthen or start pastoring, with intention, your own communities
311 – Do the people you love know you love them?Have you ever felt a deep sense of love and affection for someone, but they had no clue you cared so much about them? All too often someone feels unloved, while people actually do love them, but they never tell the person or express their love in a tangible way.In this week's episode we're going to talk about the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself from a little different angle: How to love people so they know they are lovedHow Jesus loved people so they felt his loveHow you can love people the exact way Jesus didDon't just tell people you love them, although that is important. Show them your love by how you treat them, how you listen to them, how you're patient with them, how you help them, and what you do unexpectedly to bring them joy.And the beautiful thing in doing this is, when you let someone know you love them and express that love in a way they feel loved, you will feel more love as well. ∞∞∞∞∞∞Previous episodes mentioned this week: Episode 4: Are You Afraid to Love as Much as Jesus Did? This week, we're bringing you a special episode recorded live from the Restore gathering in 2024, where we were joined by Jared Halverson. This one one of my very favorite topics to hear Jared talk about. His session was on what he calls “contraries” or paradoxes that are inherent in a life of faith. His message feels especially timely this week. He offers the powerful image of the cross as a symbol of wholeness in our discipleship. One axis, reaching vertically, represents our connection to God, while the horizontal beam represents the love and care we extend outward to embrace those around us. True discipleship, Jared explained, is this centerpoint. It requires both beams—it's a deep grounding in God that inspires us to reach out in love to others. Jared's session feels like an invitation to love our neighbor. He boldly reminds us that the means matter, that "being right with God, does not justify being wrong with other people." So rather than allowing our differences to create distance, he challenges us to see the ways that truth is found in the tension of the paradox. This “both-and” approach allows us to see each other more fully and generously, creating connection that transcends our differences and reflects god's love. We're so grateful for Jared's wisdom in this session, and we hope his message helps you feel connected and inspired this week and we hope you'll join us at Restore this year where you'll hear Jared live. When Dan Hanneken started reading a bible in a prison cell, he had no idea how God's grace could offer a second chance for anyone willing to change. This is the final episode in our “Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself” series, and we end with the incredible story of how Dan Hanneken found God in an unlikely place. Host Shay Roush interviews Dan as he shares how his own journey, marked by addiction, three prison stints and a life-changing encounter with God's grace inspired him to create In2Action, a ministry that offers practical and relational support to men entering the community from prison. Dan's turning point was when he “broke up with God” because he believed that he couldn't try hard enough, memorize enough bible verses or be good enough to make his life better and stay out of prison. That's when he finally understood the deeper meaning of grace: your best efforts aren't enough to create and sustain personal transformation. Dan recognized that a relationship with God wasn't a means to an end, but that a relationship with God was the basis for finding his identity as a fully loved and accepted child of God. Taking a leap of faith, Dan founded In2Action, a faith-based nonprofit that supports men recently released from prison with housing, life skills, and community integration. Starting with a single rented house, the ministry now offers over 60 beds and a Reentry Opportunity Center, achieving a remarkable recidivism rate in mid-Missouri below 10% compared to the county's 43%. Dan recognizes that success goes beyond staying out of prison—it's about fostering belonging through creating community and opportunity for social transition. This remarkable story is a reminder that loving our neighbors by giving them a second chance allows them to rebuild their lives, find purpose and meaning, and come to understand the depth of God's love and the power of belonging in his family. Visit in2action.org to learn how to join this transformative work.
Exaltation & Equality James 1:9-11 9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits. James 2:1-13 2 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? 8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. I. Boasting In Christ II. Treating All With Equality III. Loving Your Neighbor
Is it possible to end homelessness for veterans in your community? Megan Sievers is on a mission to make that vision a reality. In this episode of our series, Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself, Shay Roush sits down with Megan Sievers, Executive Director of Welcome Home, a Columbia, Missouri-based nonprofit dedicated to serving homeless veterans. You may not realize that many who have given of themselves to serve our country face challenges that go unnoticed and deserve our attention. This conversation highlights how Welcome Home embodies this mission by supporting veterans in need. Welcome Home began when Vietnam veterans, heartbroken by seeing their comrades die homeless, established a shelter in 1992 to provide a lifeline for veterans. Since then, this organization has evolved from offering basic shelter to comprehensive services like emergency housing, case management, and homelessness prevention, all rooted in a commitment to honor veterans' sacrifices. Megan shares powerful stories of transformed lives as Welcome Home addresses the complex issues veterans face, including PTSD, substance abuse, and isolation. Loving others well means bringing dignity and hope to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, because those who have served our country deserve our love and support in return. What if the key to loving your neighbor lies in meeting them with grace and compassion in their most vulnerable moments, no matter their choices? In this episode of our ongoing series Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself, host Austin Conner sits down with Cassidy Teter and Molly Cover from My Life Clinic in Columbia, Missouri, to explore a compassionate approach to supporting women facing unexpected or unsupported pregnancies. No matter what your perception or personal experience with a pregnancy center might be, you will learn how offering evidence-based information, cost-free services like pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, STI testing, and personal counseling can provide dignity and care that women need when they're facing a difficult decision. While social media is rife with misinformation about women who have had or are considering an abortion, Cassidy and Molly understand the emotional, physical, and spiritual complexities that women face. My Life Clinic is committed to being a consistent, loving presence, reflecting Jesus' heart of compassion, regardless of a woman's past or future choices. They also share incredible stories of how a mother's decision to protect and choose life can have a lasting impact for generations to come. In an effort to embody Psalm 147:3 which states that “God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds”, this episode will encourage you to love your neighbor by meeting them with grace, dignity and support, especially in complex and distressing situations like unplanned pregnancies. Could “free prayer” transform your neighborhood? In this remarkable episode of our “Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself” series, we dive into the transformative work of Love Columbia as host Lynn Roush interviews Jane Williams, Co-Founder and Executive Director, and Caroline Roush, Director of Communications. It's true: Love Columbia grew from a simple gesture of offering “free prayer” to neighbors in need to a thriving hub for personal transformation in our community. Jane Williams has always been passionate about loving others well, but it was the experience of encountering her own limits when she lost her eyesight 13 years ago that deepened her reliance on God and energized her mission to build a ministry that meets both the physical and emotional needs for the most vulnerable in our city. Now a thriving non-profit organization, Love Columbia provides a holistic approach to caring for those who need a helping hand. In this episode you will learn the secret to loving others well and the key elements needed for transformation: humility to acknowledge one's need for help, faith in God's provision, endurance to persevere through challenges, and social connectedness to build supportive relationships. You'll also hear how Caroline used to underestimate the power of listening, but has since learned that you need to understand a person's struggles and dreams before offering practical help, like financial coaching or car repairs. If you want to be a force for good in your community, you'll be encouraged to know that transforming others with love always starts with one small act of faith, but can change the course of someone's life and create a legacy of hope that you could have never imagined. Luke 10:25-37; Good Samaritan, compassion
Did you know that we are in the midst of the greatest de-churching movement in the history of the world? In the last 25 years, over 40 million people have stopped going to church. While that may be cause for concern, Chris & Elizabeth McKinney see it as an opportunity to impact your neighborhood one small act at a time. Listen as Austin Conner interviews Chris and Elizabeth McKinney, a perfect fit for our current series Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself. The McKinneys are passionate about intentional neighboring, which began as a small fish fry in 2012. Their desire to create a welcoming community in their Columbia, Missouri neighborhood has since grown into a ministry to equip others to love their neighbors purposefully. The McKinneys emphasize that being a good neighbor isn't about perfection but persistence, and have countless stories of how a small effort can create a big impact in people's lives. They address common apprehensions, such as time constraints for introverts or fear of awkwardness, and stress that small steps like simply waving, saying hello, initiating small conversations or sharing a meal with your neighbor are the key to getting started. This episode will challenge the cultural norm of leaving neighbors alone, and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone, even just a little bit, so that you can play a part in “going where God is” in your neighborhood right outside your front door. Do you feel overwhelmed by the needs of those around you and struggle with guilt that you're not doing enough to help? In a world filled with suffering, brokenness and heartache, Christians are called to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39). But who defines what love is and who qualifies as your neighbor? We are kicking off a brand new series called Loving Your Neighbor as Yourself as we attempt to answer this culturally relevant and often confusing topic. In this episode, hosts John Tinnin and Shay Roush are joined by their friend and fellow pastor Nathan Tiemeyer, to tackle the question: Who is my neighbor and how am I called to love them? Through the lens of the Parable of the Good Samaritan, they explore the biblical command to love others, and address who we're called to love, and how to do so wisely. If you're feeling cynical, burdened by the needs of others, or are seeking practical ways to love well, this episode - and ultimately this series - will offer hope and clarity so that you can love your neighbor with increasing knowledge, insight and intentionality. Listen as John, Shay and Nathan discuss: The radical scope and biblical definition of the term “neighbor” How our own spiritual bankruptcy puts all of us in a position of needing help and mercy What God does - and does not - expect from us as finite creatures when it comes to meeting the needs of others How Augustine's Ordo Amoris (order of love) provides us with an intentional but discerning perspective on loving others as yourself A Christian perspective on immigration and loving the immigrant in your community This discussion will free you up to accept that you can't love everyone equally, but you can start with one person in front of you. As you consider how to “love your neighbor as yourself”, the simplest place to start is to do for one what you wish you could do for everyone, trusting God to guide your love and multiply your impact. “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 You shall not strip your vineyard bare or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the Lord your God.” ~Leviticus 19:9-10 Our summer worship series, The Bible and Economic Justice, continues with a text from Leviticus that invites us to consider how economic systems shape our daily lives. This text raises questions about ownership, such as whether our money and time are truly ours in the way we imagine. The principle of not stealing is well-known, but what defines rightful ownership, and what constitutes theft? This passage from Leviticus also asks how communities like ours can be structured to prevent “theft” by promoting fairness and equity. This solution probably won't require the installation of a new security system.
Listen, I know that there are some people in our lives, and in our world, that we classify as hard to love, yet God gives us the mandate as Christians to love our enemies and our neighbors. But in order to do that, we need to know what Biblical love is and receive a redeemed love from God Himself! Jada Edwards joins me on the podcast this week to discuss this so we can heal, forgive, and love like Christ better and biblically! April 21, 2025 | Jason Pyron speaks on how real love shows up in how we treat others. Jesus taught that loving God and loving our neighbor are inseparable. True faith isn't just belief—it's love in action. Scripture shows that love fulfills the law, builds others up, and reflects God's very nature. If we say we love God but neglect those around us, we're missing the point. In this powerful exploration of the Good Samaritan parable from Luke 10, we're challenged to redefine what it truly means to love our neighbor. The story isn't just about helping others; it's a profound lesson on the transformative power of God's love in our lives. We're reminded that loving our neighbor goes beyond mere duty or guilt - it's about crossing boundaries, getting close to those in need, and combining our words with meaningful actions. The message emphasizes that until we recognize ourselves as the ones rescued by Jesus (our ultimate Good Samaritan), we can't truly love others radically. This insight invites us to reflect on how we've experienced God's unconditional love and how that can fuel our own acts of compassion and sacrifice for others, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Still trying to “keep it real,” Fr. Anthony leads a class on the challenges that come when we try to love our neighbor. Enjoy the show!

The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) illustrates true love and mercy, challenging us to care for others beyond social or cultural barriers. Dave Henke highlights that loving our neighbor requires action, not just sentiment, and emphasizes that salvation isn't earned through works but received through faith in Christ. The Samaritan's compassion contrasts with the priest and Levite's neglect, revealing that true righteousness comes from a heart transformed by God's grace. Jesus' message is clear: show mercy and live out God's love in practical ways. ★ Support this podcast ★
