Have you ever found yourself replaying someone else's words, assuming they were judging you? Or maybe you've caught yourself criticizing someone in your mind, convinced you're seeing the situation clearly. If so, you're not alone. This week on The Love Offering Podcast, I sat down with my friend Shannon Popkin to discuss her new book, Kinda Judgy: Finding Mercy for Myself and Others in Six Stories of the Bible. Together, we explored a topic that many of us struggle with but rarely talk about openly—judgment. What if the criticism we feel from others is often rooted in our own insecurities? What if the harsh standards we apply to others reveal places in our own hearts that need God's healing mercy? Through powerful stories like Jonah, the thief on the cross, and the woman caught in adultery, Shannon reminds us that while God is a righteous Judge, He is also abundantly merciful. His mercy changes how we see ourselves and how we see others. One of my favorite takeaways from our conversation was this: we often feel judged and become judgy in response. But Jesus shows us a different way. Though He was wrongly judged, He responded with compassion, forgiveness, and grace. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why judgment and insecurity are often connected• How contempt quietly damages our relationships• What Jonah's story reveals about our own hearts• How God's mercy transforms the way we treat others• Why the cross is the ultimate picture of love and compassion Friend, if you've ever struggled with being critical of yourself or others, this conversation will encourage you and point you back to the heart of God. Tomorrow is launch day for Kinda Judgy: Finding Mercy for Myself and Others in Six Stories of the Bible—my new book releasing with Moody Publishers.I'm celebrating by sharing something special with you!Over the next six episodes, I'll be sharing The Two Doors and the Merciful Judge, an allegory I wrote as a companion to Kinda Judgy. Through the imaginative setting of the Grand Courtroom of the World, we'll revisit the same six Bible stories featured in the book—Noah, Rahab, Jonah, the sinful woman, the blind man, and the criminal on the cross—and encounter the same unchanging Judge of All.In Part 1, we'll enter the Grand Courtroom, notice the mysterious Mercy Door, and meet a man named Noah who walks with the Judge in the midst of a dark generation that ignores Him.My hope is that this allegory will help you see more clearly—and love more deeply—the Judge who holds the Final Gavel.Welcome to the Grand Courtroom of the World.Order Kinda JudgyJoin our Girls' Night Celebration! The Two Doors & the Merciful Judge SeriesHow Judgy Are You? Today, on Karl and Crew, we continued our weekly theme, “Redeeming Time.” Alex McFarland joined us to explain how redeeming time includes honoring God with our rest, responsibilities, and priorities while staying attentive to the Holy Spirit’s leading. Alex is a Christian apologist, author, evangelist, religion and culture analyst, national talk show host, and a youth expert. We also had Drew Dyck join us to explain how distractions steal our time and how Scripture, habits, and God’s grace help us redeem it for what matters. Drew is an acquisitions editor with Moody Publishers and a contributing editor for Christianity Today for Pastors. He is the author of “Your Future Self Will Thank You: Secrets to Self-Control from the Bible and Brain Science.” We invited our listeners to the “Redeem Time” Challenge to encourage you to use your time more intentionally and spiritually, focusing on productivity, purpose, rest, and honoring God, rather than wasting it. So many parents are grieving quietly — watching adult children pull away, questioning where things went wrong, and wondering if the relationship can be restored. In this episode, Brian From sits down with Dr. Kathy Koch, founder of Celebrate Kids and author of Resolve Conflict and Find Peace and Hope with Adult Children, to unpack one of the most painful challenges facing families today. Dr. Kathy shares practical wisdom on healthy communication with adult kids, how to navigate the tricky intersection of financial support and emotional distance, and what parents can do when a child walks away from their faith. She also offers an honest look at the role over-involved parenting can play — and what it looks like to parent differently in this new season. If you're exhausted, heartbroken, or just unsure where to begin — this conversation is for you. There is still hope. Resolve Conflict and Find Peace and Hope with Adult Children is available now through Moody Publishers. Show Summary: During the Christmas season, moments of joy and celebration are often paired with the mess and stress of hosting and traveling. It's easy to get caught up in the busyness of the holiday without stopping to think about the real reason for the season. Trillia Newbell wants to help people behold the Lamb of God this Christmas season through different practices that can fit in between baking Christmas cookies or wrapping gifts. Join hosts Elisa Morgan and Eryn Eddy Adkins as they explore these different practices with Trillia during this special God Hears Her Christmas episode! Notes and Quotes: “We are able to celebrate and enjoy these gifts because He's the giver of all good gifts.” —Trillia Newbell “There's no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. There is grace for repentance. You don't stand guilty or condemned. You can ask the Lord for help, grace, and strength and receive His forgiveness.” —Trillia Newbell “The joy of the Lord is my strength. I believe that joy and faith are a gift, so ask God for it.” —Trillia Newbell “We approach a throne of grace. We approach a God who understands, who draws near to the brokenhearted.” —Trillia Newbell Verses: John 1:38 Hebrews 2 Corinthians 6:10 Psalms Related Episodes: GHH Ep 71 – Christ As A Baby: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/christ-as-a-baby/ GHH Ep 111 – Christmas Expectations with Ruth Chou Simons: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/christmas-expectations/ GHH Ep 174 – The True Miracle of Christmas: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/the-true-miracle-of-christmas/ Links: Trillia's Website: https://www.trillianewbell.com/ God Hears Her website: https://go.odb.org/ghh191 Subscribe to the God Hears Her YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@GodHearsHerODBM
Amidst the busyness of the Christmas season, it can be hard to take the time to slow down and contemplate the breadth and depth of Jesus's birth. In today's episode, Trillia Newbell helps us do just that. Trillia is the author of numerous books, including Bible studies, children's books, and non-fiction titles, such as her latest book: Behold, The Lamb of God Has Come: Celebrating the 25 Days of Christmas Together. Trillia also supports other writers as the Acquisitions Director at Moody Publishers. In today's conversation, Trillia invites us to reflect on the character and work of Jesus, as well as how the Christmas story helps us persevere in faith amidst a broken world. Trillia also helps us see why societal beauty standards are unhelpful and, instead, invites us to embrace the beauty of diversity. My hope is that this conversation may open your mind and heart anew to the beauty and hope that the Christmas season brings.Buy Melissa L. Today on Karl and Crew, we continued our weekly theme of “Spiritual Detox” with discussions about the importance of taking accountability when repenting and self-control. When we come before God in repentance, we need to own what we did and humbly surrender to Him for restoration and healing. This is affirmed in Joel 2:25, where God promises to restore Israel after the plague of locusts, because they turned back to Him and repented. We then had a special guest, Dean Sikes, join us to share his story of overcoming sexual abuse. He also told us about the work he does with teenagers in trauma recovery and suicide prevention. Dean is an author and a speaker who travels the world ministering to high schoolers, providing them with words of hope. He also hosts the national broadcast You Matter Television and has authored a book called “You Matter.” We then had Drew Dyck join us to discuss the importance of biblical self-control. Drew is an acquisitions editor with Moody Publishers and a contributing editor for Christianity Today for Pastors. He has also authored several books, including “Your Future Self Will Thank You: Secrets to Self-Control from the Bible and Brain Science.” You can hear the highlights of today's program on the Karl and Crew Showcast.
