Have you ever found yourself replaying someone else's words, assuming they were judging you? Or maybe you've caught yourself criticizing someone in your mind, convinced you're seeing the situation clearly. If so, you're not alone. This week on The Love Offering Podcast, I sat down with my friend Shannon Popkin to discuss her new book, Kinda Judgy: Finding Mercy for Myself and Others in Six Stories of the Bible. Together, we explored a topic that many of us struggle with but rarely talk about openly—judgment. What if the criticism we feel from others is often rooted in our own insecurities? What if the harsh standards we apply to others reveal places in our own hearts that need God's healing mercy? Through powerful stories like Jonah, the thief on the cross, and the woman caught in adultery, Shannon reminds us that while God is a righteous Judge, He is also abundantly merciful. His mercy changes how we see ourselves and how we see others. One of my favorite takeaways from our conversation was this: we often feel judged and become judgy in response. But Jesus shows us a different way. Though He was wrongly judged, He responded with compassion, forgiveness, and grace. In this episode, you'll discover: • Why judgment and insecurity are often connected• How contempt quietly damages our relationships• What Jonah's story reveals about our own hearts• How God's mercy transforms the way we treat others• Why the cross is the ultimate picture of love and compassion Friend, if you've ever struggled with being critical of yourself or others, this conversation will encourage you and point you back to the heart of God. This is Elder John Aloisio's Sunday message, taken from the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 23, Verses 32 - 43.
Devotion : Luke 23:39-43 / Baptizing the Thief on the Cross by Community Lutheran Church
A dying criminal turns his head toward Jesus and asks to be remembered and Jesus answers with a promise that still stops people cold: “today you will be with me in paradise.” I open Luke 23 with the thief on the cross because it cuts through the noise and gets straight to the heart of the gospel: salvation comes by faith in Jesus Christ, not by the right church label, the right connections, or a lifetime of bragging rights. If you've ever wondered whether grace can reach someone at the very end, this passage forces an honest answer. From there, I pray and ask God for guidance, comfort for the brokenhearted, and protection for those who serve. I also read a marriage verse from 1 Corinthians 11:7–9 and talk about why Scripture doesn't stop applying just because society feels “past” it. That theme carries into worshipful readings from the Psalms about God's justice and righteousness, plus a proverb that exposes how easy it is to deceive ourselves when we refuse to turn to God.I wrap with a few culture and history notes, including a reminder of Christian language in early American founding documents like the Delaware Constitution, alongside a brief Medal of Honor spotlight. I also share an update on my middle grade fantasy series, Countryside, and how you can support the work. What if you were the thief on the cross? In this powerful monologue, Adam steps into the final moments of the man crucified beside Jesus—guilty, broken, and out of time… yet offered something he never expected: mercy. This is not just a retelling of a familiar story. It's a raw, honest reflection on guilt, grace, and the shocking reality of forgiveness at the very edge of death. Inspired by the account in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 23:39–43), where one thief mocks… and the other believes: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And Jesus responds: “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Today, on Karl and Crew, we continued our weekly theme, “Holy Week,” by reflecting on the hope we have in Christ and the power of the cross in our everyday lives. Colin Smith joined us to discuss how Easter reveals our need for a Savior and the grace of salvation through faith in Jesus. Colin is Senior Pastor Emeritus of The Orchard Evangelical Free Church. He is also the founder and teacher of the daily radio program “Open the Bible,” which airs weekday mornings on Moody Radio at 9:00 a.m. CT. He is the author of many books, including “Heaven, How I Got Here: The Story of the Thief on the Cross.” Dr. Bill Thrasher also joined us to discuss how to intentionally grow closer to God during Easter by understanding the power of the cross and living honestly before Him. Dr. Thrasher has served on the faculty of Moody Bible Institute since 1980 and is the Lead Professor in the master’s program in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship at MBI. He is also a frequent speaker across the country and the author of several books, including “A Journey to Victorious Praying: Finding Discipline and Delight in Your Prayer Life.” We then turned to the phone lines to hear from our listeners. Despite the clear teaching of the New Testament on the necessity of baptism for salvation, some resist, citing the thief on the cross as proof that baptism is not necessary. What about the thief on the cross? Does this account nullify the necessity of baptism for the forgiveness of sins?

What about the thief on the cross? In this clip from Episode 218 of The Hacka Podcast, Greg Hackathorn and Simeon Costa respond to one of the most common objections in the baptism conversation. If the thief wasn't baptized, does that mean baptism isn't necessary?Together, we walk through Luke 23, the timing of the Old Covenant vs the New Covenant, and why the thief's experience took place before the death, resurrection, and outpouring of the Spirit in Acts 2.This isn't about dismissing the story — it's about understanding when it happened and how that affects how we interpret it today. If you've ever used (or heard) this argument, this clip will help you see it in context.

"The Thief on the Cross" #2 - Last time we heard Jesus make a promise to the one thief crucified beside Him, that he would be in Paradise that day with Jesus. Some folks today try to draw the conclusion from this that since this thief was not baptized then people today do not need to be baptized either. Two things make this position illogical and untenable. First, when correctly understood, scripture will never contradict itself. Second, today, we are under the New Covenant. The thief was not. Let's take a look.
Today's classic episode from 2020 includes the story of my first trip to the golf course with my father. WE also consider the thief on the cross and the call to clean up our ethics.
One of the robbers crucified along with Jesus admitted his guilt and asked Jesus to remember him when He came into His kingdom. Jesus told him that he would be with Him in Paradise on that day. This event continues to be a point of controversy. What can we make of this? Is Jesus establishing another way to be saved without the need for being baptized? What else did this man NOT do which is taught elsewhere in scripture? Let's engage in some good Bible study in these two lessons to find some answers.
Delivered by Pastor Brad Smith 10/08/25. It seems that the thief on the cross gets a lot of attention in the discussion of salvation. This study takes things a bit deeper in understanding when the thief lived, not where Jesus said he would live.

The saving of the thief on the cross is undoubtedly the most remarkable salvation of all of those recorded in the gospels. Many people believed in Jesus as they watched Him heal, deliver and perform miracles, but this man believed as he watched Jesus die. He had only a few hours of contact with Jesus, during which both endured the horrors of crucifixion, yet, in spite of this, he embraced the essentials of the gospel and was granted eternal life. No one explained to him what he must do to be saved, but as he watched and listened, his heart told him the truth, and he responded with faith. It would be hard to imagine a situation which better reveals the essential elements for salvation. Let's look closely at this man's experience.
