"The Thief on the Cross" #2 - Last time we heard Jesus make a promise to the one thief crucified beside Him, that he would be in Paradise that day with Jesus. Some folks today try to draw the conclusion from this that since this thief was not baptized then people today do not need to be baptized either. Two things make this position illogical and untenable. First, when correctly understood, scripture will never contradict itself. Second, today, we are under the New Covenant. The thief was not. Let's take a look.
Today's classic episode from 2020 includes the story of my first trip to the golf course with my father. WE also consider the thief on the cross and the call to clean up our ethics.
One of the robbers crucified along with Jesus admitted his guilt and asked Jesus to remember him when He came into His kingdom. Jesus told him that he would be with Him in Paradise on that day. This event continues to be a point of controversy. What can we make of this? Is Jesus establishing another way to be saved without the need for being baptized? What else did this man NOT do which is taught elsewhere in scripture? Let's engage in some good Bible study in these two lessons to find some answers.
Delivered by Pastor Brad Smith 10/08/25. The following discussion reveals that the scriptural process to save the thief was all but impossible... the simple process of comparing spiritual with spiritual reveals much more than personal preferences. It seems that the thief on the cross gets a lot of attention in the discussion of salvation. This study takes things a bit deeper in understanding when the thief lived, not where Jesus said he would live.
Mike continues our Summer School series by showing us how to find freedom for our future, like the Thief on the Cross did during Jesus' final hours.

The saving of the thief on the cross is undoubtedly the most remarkable salvation of all of those recorded in the gospels. Many people believed in Jesus as they watched Him heal, deliver and perform miracles, but this man believed as he watched Jesus die. He had only a few hours of contact with Jesus, during which both endured the horrors of crucifixion, yet, in spite of this, he embraced the essentials of the gospel and was granted eternal life. No one explained to him what he must do to be saved, but as he watched and listened, his heart told him the truth, and he responded with faith. It would be hard to imagine a situation which better reveals the essential elements for salvation. Let's look closely at this man's experience. This story gets lots of attention around this time of year. No doubt, it is an incredible example of the saving power of the sacrifice of Christ. But the way it's interpreted is critical to a right understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. Whitney Capps and Russ Greer offer some thoughts on how this encounter with the crucified Christ impacts the greater understanding of salvation. We'd love to hear from you! In part three of our series, Walking With Jesus: A Journey to the Cross with Major Dr. Terry Masango, we explore three simple words: "Jesus, remember me." Spoken by a dying criminal, these words contain within them the essence of our faith journey. As we near Holy Week, Major Masango invites us to consider which of the two thieves we identify with—the one who demanded physical salvation or the one who recognized his need for spiritual redemption. It's a message that speaks directly to those of us who feel unworthy, invisible, or beyond redemption. It reminds us that even at the worst points in our lives—even in our final moments like the thief on the cross—we can turn to Jesus and simply ask, "Remember me." And his answer remains the same: "Today you will be with me in paradise." >>> Get your free Holy Week Art Journal here. EPISODE SHOWNOTES: Read more. BE AFFIRMED. Get the Good Words email series. He died a thief's death. He awoke in paradise. As Easter approaches, Pastor Colin Smith, host of Open the Bible, shares one of the most remarkable stories of God's grace. It's a feature called Heaven, How I Got Here, and it's the perfect opportunity for you to share the Good News.
Pastor Nichole continues her series that investigates interactions that Jesus had with people during His time here on earth.Jesus shared his message of salvation to all, even in his final agonizing moments on the cross. What vital lesson about salvation must we learn from Jesus' interaction with the thief on the cross, and how do we apply it in our own lives if we hope to bring the gospel to everyone, everywhere?

Some say yes, while others say no. If he was saved, how was he saved? Was he saved under the provisions of the Old Covenant, or was he saved under the New Covenant? Is his salvation the same sort of salvation that we receive today under the New Covenant, or is it something different? Some years after Christ's death on the cross and His resurrection, the Apostle Paul writes in Romans 10:9, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Did the thief confess these things and confess his sin? He was literally on his bed of death, so in addition to all this, there's the question of baptism. The thief wasn't baptized. How can what happened between Jesus and the two thieves be explained so we might better understand what took place? Join us on the Straight Truth Podcast this week as Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the biblical account of the thief on the cross from Luke 23. Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot seek to help us see how this story illustrates key aspects of faith, salvation, and even evangelism. From Luke 23:32-33, we learn that two thieves (also called criminals/robbers elsewhere) are led away with and will be put to death on crosses along with Jesus, one on His right and one on His left. Dr. Philpot shares the account of Luke 23 from verses 39-43, where these two criminals have both been reviling Jesus (See Matthew 27:44, Mark 15:32) when almost suddenly one criminal profoundly rebukes the other and then goes on to appeal to Jesus to remember him when He comes into His Kingdom. Jesus answers that man by saying, Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. Dr. Caldwell tells us Jesus answered that man's request, and he was saved. But how did that happen, we ask? He was saved the same way that salvation has been throughout history. Salvation has always been by grace alone, faith alone,
