The saving of the thief on the cross is undoubtedly the most remarkable salvation of all of those recorded in the gospels. Many people believed in Jesus as they watched Him heal, deliver and perform miracles, but this man believed as he watched Jesus die. He had only a few hours of contact with Jesus, during which both endured the horrors of crucifixion, yet, in spite of this, he embraced the essentials of the gospel and was granted eternal life. No one explained to him what he must do to be saved, but as he watched and listened, his heart told him the truth, and he responded with faith. It would be hard to imagine a situation which better reveals the essential elements for salvation. Let's look closely at this man's experience. This story gets lots of attention around this time of year. No doubt, it is an incredible example of the saving power of the sacrifice of Christ. But the way it's interpreted is critical to a right understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. Whitney Capps and Russ Greer offer some thoughts on how this encounter with the crucified Christ impacts the greater understanding of salvation. We'd love to hear from you! The Analytical Preacher - Bible Discussions For The Modern World
The account of the thief's interaction with Jesus on the cross was included in the Gospel of Luke for a reason. But what is the lesson we are to take from that brief interaction? In this podcast, we discuss what lessons should and which lessons should not be taken from that section of scripture. One of the main conclusions is that we can never get too far from God to return to Him through Christ and it is never too late to make our decision for Christ. #goodfriday

In part three of our series, Walking With Jesus: A Journey to the Cross with Major Dr. Terry Masango, we explore three simple words: "Jesus, remember me." Spoken by a dying criminal, these words contain within them the essence of our faith journey. As we near Holy Week, Major Masango invites us to consider which of the two thieves we identify with—the one who demanded physical salvation or the one who recognized his need for spiritual redemption. It's a message that speaks directly to those of us who feel unworthy, invisible, or beyond redemption. It reminds us that even at the worst points in our lives—even in our final moments like the thief on the cross—we can turn to Jesus and simply ask, "Remember me." And his answer remains the same: "Today you will be with me in paradise." >>> Get your free Holy Week Art Journal here. EPISODE SHOWNOTES: Read more. BE AFFIRMED. Get the Good Words email series. Pastor Nichole continues her series that investigates interactions that Jesus had with people during His time here on earth.Jesus shared his message of salvation to all, even in his final agonizing moments on the cross. What vital lesson about salvation must we learn from Jesus' interaction with the thief on the cross, and how do we apply it in our own lives if we hope to bring the gospel to everyone, everywhere?

Sermon Outline/Slides: What about the Thief on the Cross
It seems that the thief on the cross gets a lot of attention in the discussion of salvation. This study takes things a bit deeper in understanding when the thief lived, not where Jesus said he would live.

People are obsessed with life; no one wants to die. In fact, we are scared to death of dying. Most of us are familiar with the saying, "You only live once." But we have to ask ourselves an all-important question: What happens to us after we die? For most people, death is either a great mystery or a subject of great denial. However, the fact remains – we all die. What if this life is not all there is? What if there actually is life after death? If so, who can tell us what happens after we die? Because of His firsthand experience in heaven and His knowledge of the future, Jesus can. He presents us with three basic truths about the subject of life after death: 1. There is life after death. 2. There are two destinations from which everyone must choose. 3. There is a way to ensure you make the right choice. Right now, you may be dying of thirst, but you don't have to perish in your thirst. Likewise, you may be overcome with sin, but you don't have to die in your sins. There is something you can do, right now, to ensure that when you die, you will have everlasting life and happiness. The most important thing you must do in this life is to make sure you don't die in your sins. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. – John 3:17 (NLT)
The biblical kind of remembering is not like our usual idea of remembering where we recall an event or reflect on happier times. Biblical remembering involves bringing something from the past into the present in such a way that it does not lose any of its original meaning or power or import. It's an almost tangible way to connect past and present. So much about worship—so much about living a life of worship—is about remembering rightly. How do we remember rightly and biblically?

Some say yes, while others say no. If he was saved, how was he saved? Was he saved under the provisions of the Old Covenant, or was he saved under the New Covenant? Is his salvation the same sort of salvation that we receive today under the New Covenant, or is it something different? Some years after Christ's death on the cross and His resurrection, the Apostle Paul writes in Romans 10:9, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Did the thief confess these things and confess his sin? He was literally on his bed of death, so in addition to all this, there's the question of baptism. The thief wasn't baptized. How can what happened between Jesus and the two thieves be explained so we might better understand what took place? Join us on the Straight Truth Podcast this week as Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot discuss the biblical account of the thief on the cross from Luke 23. Dr. Caldwell and Dr. Philpot seek to help us see how this story illustrates key aspects of faith, salvation, and even evangelism. From Luke 23:32-33, we learn that two thieves (also called criminals/robbers elsewhere) are led away with and will be put to death on crosses along with Jesus, one on His right and one on His left. Dr. Philpot shares the account of Luke 23 from verses 39-43, where these two criminals have both been reviling Jesus (See Matthew 27:44, Mark 15:32) when almost suddenly one criminal profoundly rebukes the other and then goes on to appeal to Jesus to remember him when He comes into His Kingdom. Jesus answers that man by saying, Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. Dr. Caldwell tells us Jesus answered that man's request, and he was saved. But how did that happen, we ask? He was saved the same way that salvation has been throughout history. Salvation has always been by grace alone, faith alone,
In this episode, Dr. Richard Caldwell and Dr. Josh Philpot explore the biblical account of the thief on the cross from Luke 23. The discussion delves into how this story reveals the nature of salvation, which is by grace alone through faith alone, and emphasizes the power of faith in Christ, even in the final moments of life. This story serves as both an encouragement and a warning—showing that it's never too late to come to Christ, but also highlighting the urgency of responding to the gospel message.

The Thief on the Cross and baptism.
In Isaiah 53:10-12, Isaiah the prophet wrote about the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ, 700 years before Jesus came to the earth! That tells us that the plan of God for a redeemer, God's will, always was! It was also God's will that, even in death, it did not end the plan and will of God, because through resurrection, God's will and testament, Jesus, would live on eternally. And Jesus gave us that promise, too. That plan, the will and testament of God, was and is inclusive for all who believe that Jesus is the Son of God, God Himself, and that He came to save us from our sins. Even one of the two thieves who died on the cross with Jesus believed and was saved! He believed that Jesus was the Son of God, and he believed that he was a sinner and that Jesus could save him from his sins, even though he deserved death. Jesus gave him such a glorious hope and promise that, today, that very day of what seemed to be the worst day of that man's life, would end in Paradise with Jesus—eternally. Even the thief on the cross believed and was saved! And again, that same promise is given for us, today. Do you believe?

We live in a time that we can communicate or shop around the world in relatively a short amount of time. We can get thousands of answers to our questions on our phone in a matter of seconds or thousands of a second. We can transfer, send or receive money electronically in a few clicks. It seems like almost everything we want or need is being available to us faster and faster in a shorter amount of time and effort. So, what about praying? Can we get what we want or need in a short prayer? Do short prayers even work? The bible has some really good examples of short prayers and how they worked. These examples should encourage us to pray, even if we don’t exactly know how to get started praying, and if we do pray they should encourage us to pray even more.
