Welcome to November 26, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate expensive cakes and being in the black  Yesterday on Thanksgiving, pie got its time in the spotlight. But most people prefer cake. Like the man from the United Arab Emirates who purchased a custom-made cake for his daughter's birthday. And it was expensive. Very expensive. The cake cost—you may want to sit down for this one—$75 million. Debbie Wingham, a British designer, created a replica of a fashion show, complete with a runway, models, and audience. The cake was about 2 meters long and took 1,100 hours to complete. Premium ingredients, gemstones, and handmade outfits for the tiny figures drove the price into the stratosphere. On National Cake Day, celebrate with a cheaper version that lets you have your cake and eat it too! Brace yourself for the start of the Christmas shopping season. Here comes Black Friday! Shopping today is hectic, but certainly not awful, so why does it have such a bleak name? Turns out that the phrase Black Friday was first used in 1869, when plummeting gold prices crashed the market. It was also used by traffic police in the 1950s to describe the surge in traffic jams caused by post holiday shoppers. The silver lining explanation goes something like this. Through most of the year, retailers are losing money, which is known as “being in the red.” When Christmas shopping starts, sales go way up, and they're “in the black.” No matter how you see it, Black Friday is a great day to find amazing deals on gifts for friends and family. In this episode, I share how I was able to transition my online presence from a healthy living blogger to functional nutrition (FDN-P) entrepreneur. It definitely wasn't easy, and I struggled for years before hiring a business coach. At times, I felt defeated, frustrated, and confused. I was constantly second-guessing what I was doing and not getting the results that I wanted. Accountability and clarity from my coach and mastermind community were the key factors in helping me transition Carrots 'N' Cake to what it is today. I couldn't have done it without a coach and supportive community. Clearly, I do well with external accountability… having a deadline from my business coach, being accountable to the women in my mastermind… I still have to show up and do the work, yes, but it's much easier for me to NOT give up when I know I have someone checking in with me. For me it's not necessarily about the education or resources; it's more about the accountability, support, guidance, and clarity that my coaches provide. There is SO much nutrition and fitness information out there. To the point where it's easy to get paralyzed and not do ANYTHING, which makes things even more challenging when “life happens”. Having a support system in place is key to pulling many of us back on track, especially when you have a case of the “fuck its.” Belonging to a group with similar goals is a great strategy to help you stick with your healthy living goals. Your environment and the people who you surround yourself with matter a LOT. Right now, enrollment is open for the Carrot 'N' Cake Lifestyle Membership. In episode 368, we welcome our guests, Corey Hoffstein, CIO and co-founder of Newfound Research, and Rodrigo Gordillo, President and PM at ReSolve Asset Management In today's episode, we're talking about return stacking! Corey and Rodrigo joined forces to try and tackle the issue of how to generate returns in an environment with stretched equity and fixed income valuations. We hear how using a little bit of leverage to the traditional 60/40 portfolio can provide more than one dollar of exposure for every dollar invested. Our guests then walk us through what strategies investors can stack on top of their 60/40 portfolio, including global systematic macro, trend following, and tail hedging, and what that does to the risk/return profile. Be sure to stick around until the end to hear stories about what life is like for people who have actually lived in an inflationary environment.
