Today's guest is Carla Hall. Carla is a chef, cookbook author, TV personality, and all-around culinary force whose career has taken her from the runways of Paris to the sets of “Top Chef,” “The Chew,” and more. She's the star and executive producer of the Emmy Award–winning series “Chasing Flavor,” a co-mentor on the new show, “Next Level Baker,” and the author of several books, including “Carla Hall's Soul Food” and two children's books, “Carla Hall and the Christmas Cornbread” and “Carla and the Tin Can Cake Party.”Carla joins host Jessie Sheehan to talk about her life and career—from her childhood memories of her grandmother's five-flavor pound cake, to the years she spent in Paris as a model discovering her love for cooking, to the moment “Top Chef” changed everything. Then, Carla walks Jessie through her Gingerbread Cake With Snow Sugar, a deeply spiced, ultra-moist loaf that uses the reverse-creaming method for a very tender crumb. She explains why hot water is the secret ingredient, how to make “snow sugar” that won't melt into the cake, and why “sawing” is the only proper way to slice a loaf cake.Click here for Carla's Gingerbread Cake with Snow Sugar recipe.Thank you to Diamond Nuts, California Prunes, and King Arthur Baking for their support. Sources tell me Britney Spears burst into laughter after seeing her ex-husband’s new Playboy cover, brushing off the images as “nothing to write home about.” Meanwhile, Tom Cruise’s once–must-have holiday coconut Bundt cake is losing its sparkle in Hollywood, where stars are now gravitating toward Taylor Swift–themed treats instead. And in Aspen circles, insiders whisper that Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are experiencing a subtle but noticeable strain over political differences — a rare crack in one of Hollywood’s most famously steady couples. In this episode, Tina shares how our newly restructured one-on-one coaching helps women in perimenopause and menopause see real body composition changes after years of feeling stuck. Instead of cookie-cutter protocols and expensive testing upfront, we now build month-to-month, personalized strategies that actually move the needle: think toned arms, a flatter waistline, better sleep, fewer cravings, improved digestion, and more energy than you've had in years. Functional testing is used only when needed, and multi-phase protocols help repair metabolism, balance hormones, and build strength in a way that's realistic and sustainable. If you're doing “everything right” and still not seeing results, this episode will show you how the right strategy changes everything. Here's what you'll learn: - Why our 1:1 program is built specifically for women who've been burned before and how we put YOU back in control of the process - What I discovered when I realized “being stuck” had nothing to do with effort and everything to do with strategy - Why a month-to-month approach often works better than a long, pre-packaged timeline, especially in perimenopause) - How multiple phases (not one giant protocol) led to better results for my metabolism, symptoms, and body composition - How to invest wisely in your health so every dollar counts, whether it's labs, peptides, or HRT - How we redesigned coaching to focus on long-term results instead of “fast fixes” or unrealistic promises - The hidden advantage of slow, level-by-level protocols, and why they produce better progress over time. - Why we changed our entire coaching model to make results more accessible, more flexible, and more sustainable for women 35+. In this episode of “Half Hour”, we take a deeper dive into the Broadway musical Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), now playing at the Longacre Theatre. We unpack the show's rom-com structure, how the title frames the central journey across New York, and where the book and concept land for us. We also examine the contemporary score by Jim Barne and Kit Buchan, the production's direction by Tim Jackson, and the scenic and costume design by Soutra Gilmour, alongside lighting by Jack Knowles and sound design by Tony Gayle. Performances from Sam Tutty as Dougal and Christiani Pitts as Robin are front and center as they consider chemistry, character arcs, and how this production might factor into this year's Tony Awards race, including the possibility of future stunt casting. It’s that special time of year when we must revisit Tom Cruise’s strangest (and most iconic) holiday tradition — the infamous ‘coconut cake list.’ We’re diving into how this sugary gift became an elite Hollywood status symbol, who’s made the cut this year, and who’s been heartbreakingly dropped… and is still absolutely devo about it.Plus, a brand new rom-com is on the way, and the trailer alone has sent us into a full spiral. It stars two actors who were once pegged as the next big thing — and now might be hoping this film is their ticket to a much-needed career revival. And Elizabeth Olsen has opened up about what it was really like growing up in the shadow of Mary-Kate and Ashley. I was diagnosed with an extremely severe case of sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a pre-diabetic status. At this time, I was also struggling with substance abuse, which would obviously contribute to my health complications, but most were from birth. After receiving the news from running tests, the doctors had informed me that I was lucky to be alive. My psychological health was greatly impacted by my physiological health, evoking feelings of anger, and negativity which caused me to constantly argue with people around me. This affected several of my relationships and was creating a miserable life. This lead me to seek out the help of a bodybuilding coach (not knowing a damn thing about health at the time). The main focus was “getting shredded,” not understanding how much internal health affects one's physique. Interestingly enough, shedding the weight had really helped with my sleep apnea, but still, quite a few health complications were present. At this time hunger was ignited in me to learn more. I became determined to solve what was going on in my body. I decided to acquire my first nutrition certification through the ISSA (International Sports Science Association).
Today's guest is Aimee France, the self-taught cake artist also known as yungkombucha420. Aimee is one of the most original cake artists and content creators working today. She's also one of the cover stars of our brand-new holiday issue of Cherry Bombe Magazine, The Cake Issue, which is especially fitting given how much she's influenced the cake world over the past few years.A native of New Hampshire and now based in Brooklyn, Aimee built an unexpected career out of flavor exploration, visual whimsy, and sheer work ethic—but as you'll hear, that path hasn't been without its challenges. Today, we talk about everything from her famously unique breakfasts and current nut-butter obsession to the injuries that forced her to step back from cake production and rethink her future. Aimee opens up about burnout, entrepreneurship, her changing relationship with baking, and the quarter-life reassessment (we won't call it a crisis), that she's navigating right now. We also get into her influences—Tim Burton, claymation films, old-school rap—and the fashion, art, and everyday city moments that fuel her creativity. If you love Aimee's work, or if you're in need of a little honesty and reinvention energy, this is the episode for you. rifters everywhere, all the grifters the eye can see—usually surrounded by an extra set of fingers or image diffusion to give their position away! We all miss the “halcyon” (and mind you, there are some heavyweight lifting behind those air-quotes) days of 2020 when the only bull-shitters trying to pass off a fugazi were bakers and their silly-ass cake art. Is that a Nintendo GameCube or a Cake? Is that my neighbor’s dog? It looks a little weird, right? Then, before you could feel assured that this was in fact the pooch next door, the neighbor posted an elaborately layered confection that turned out to be, yeah, you guessed it, cake—cue Ron Howard’s narrative barb as you wallow in your poor judgment. But yeah, wasn’t shit just simpler then? It’s a good thing we have video games to get us through the absurdity of 2025, because there’s less AI involved with them somehow. This week’s episode is another, you guessed it, What’s-in-your-console episode because 2025 has been bountiful with the waves upon waves of interaction distraction for the winter season. We have a full table this week as George, Ed, Andrew, and Sean round out the bench to talk about all of the games juicing their serotonin, and some neat hardware talk too to boot! We’re talking Animal Crossing: New Horizon, Birdcage, MegaBonk, Absolum, Ghost of Yōtei, Tech Romancer, Metroid Dread, Parasite Eve, Hades II, Arc Raiders, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Tech Romancer, Super Mariomon, Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Final Fantasy XI, and more! For the hardware talk, Ed goes into some incredible detail with the Supergun setup he built with the BeharBros. Hayabusa and various electrical components to house a number of arcade boards like the Capcom CPS1 boards, Taito X System boards, IGS PolyGameMaster boards, Neo•Geo MVS boards, and more! Georgie, on the other hand, has some way less cool tech to discuss as he took the plunge on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X, and discussed the various hits and misses of the handheld with us on the show (spoiler, there were a few more misses than hits in the shared impressions.) Trying new things is at the heart of designing your next chapter — like trying on clothes, you experiment to see what fits your life now. Baking a cake for the first time reminded me that life after 50 is the same: old rules don't matter, mistakes happen, and what counts is what works for you. When you take control and mix your experience with confidence, you create something richer, bolder, and unmistakably your own.//WHEN YOU'RE READY, HERE'S HOW I CAN HELP YOUBUY THE BOOK: https://a.co/d/czSh6zxGet the books' bonus resources: https://sharriharmel.com/Join Substack to continue the conversation: https://sharriharmel.substack.com/Start your Breakthrough today: https://sharriharmel.com/breakthrough/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sharriharmel/Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/273197629997812

Did an early version of Elton John's Saturday Night include the lyric "Saturday night's alright for fighting crosswords"? We don't know for certain, but we do know that today's crossword was an epic battle -- at least for Mike. Jean, as usual, found this to be a more of a minor skirmish. As we have come to expect from Adrian Johnson, author of today's puzzle, the clues had a lot of spice and bite. For example, 27D, High-level intelligence assets?, SPYPLANES (nice!); 25D, What sfouf is, in Lebanese cuisine, CAKE (we'll take two, please

In true Brick Session fashion, Mark doesn't hold back as he unloads on what he famously calls the T100 “cake and arse party” in Dubai — and yes, there may be a bit of swearing, so consider yourself warned. As always, Caroline brings a more balanced perspective as the two of them break down the many factors that led to athletes miscounting bike laps and failing to complete run course. In a thought-provoking segment, Caroline asks whether a formerly banned (doping) triathlete should still be allowed a voice in the sport? Mark's answer might surprise you. This episode also dives into Mark and Caroline's recent Himalayan adventure, where they completed the full Manaslu Circuit in just 5.5 days. A route that normally takes two weeks or more. They share detailed insight into altitude, acclimatisation, what to do if severe sickness hits, and practical tips for anyone dreaming of a high-altitude expedition. Finally, they express heartfelt thanks to everyone who has generously donated to the Peak Education Nepal charity. A packed episode full of honesty, adventure, insight, opinion — and plenty of Brick Session character. Enjoy!
In this episode, I'm recapping my weekend — and it had range. Saturday kicked off with a Friendsgiving that started calmly and quickly turned chaotic, setting the tone for the night. On Sunday, I slowed things down a bit: cleaned my place, reset my space, and then headed out to a rooftop party. From there, I talk about my interactions with men that night — including why men in their 40s are actually so sexy. Confidence, emotional seasoning, knowing who they are… it just hits different. It's a mix of friendship, mess, nightlife, and grown-man appreciation — with a little reflection sprinkled in.— Don't forget to subscribe, like, and give me my 10s in the comments! In Episode 424 Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger head to Hartford, Connecticut, for their Thanksgiving dessert. Hartford Election Cake is a massive confection that dates back to 1796 when America was holding its first contested presidential election. Voting used to be a big event with parties and banquets and a HUGE cake as a reward. The people of Hartford made an 80-pound cake following the recipe of Amelia Simmons. Over time, election day became less of an event, but Thanksgiving got bigger. So the people of Connecticut moved their favorite cake over to Thanksgiving. Enjoy! This was fully intended to be exclusive to our Patreon Subscribers, however this topic was so polarizing for the holiday we had no choice but to drop it on the main feed. Don't worry Patreon "GOOD Guys" we are still dropping your exclusive this month, but for now let's have a power chat about these dumpster desserts
