As European imperialism heated up in Africa in the late 1800's, King Leopold II of Belgium put into motion one of the most ambitious and villainous plans in all of European history - the theft of the entire Congo. Utilizing the work of explorer Henry Morton Stanley, European animus towards the Afro-Arab Slave Trade, the creation of dubious committees and associations, international lobbying of governments, public relations campaigns, and bogus treaties with the people of Congo, Leopold understood that "...we must be cautious, clever and quick to act. I would not expose myself to displeasing the English or letting escape a good opportunity to get some of this beautiful African cake." In 1885, the countries of Europe gave their blessing to Leopold's slice of cake at the Berlin Conference. This episode is Part 2 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It takes a look at how Leopold II of Belgium went from being a monarch of tiny Belgium to the owner of the biggest European colony in Africa. GC13 and David discuss The Butterfly and the River from the second season of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake. Fionna may not be doing too much on protagonist duty in this episode, but she’s a fantastic supporting character in the series B plot. And maybe if we kill the right butterflies we won’t have to worry about her being further demoted to villain’s henchman. Huntress Wizard is doing well on her protagonist’s journey though. She’s got some nice big antlers now, and has demonstrated her ability to memorize the taste of water. She may survive in Nightmare Butterfly World yet.

Laing recently wrapped production on feature film, Tow, under her newly launched Cake or Death Pictures. Tow, which Laing also directs, is the inspirational true story of Amanda Ogle, an unhoused Seattle woman who fought her way out of tow-company hell to reclaim her life and the car that held it all together after receiving a tow bill for $21,634. Tow had its world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival in the Spotlight Narrative film category, and was recently picked up by Roadside Attractions and Vertical for a 2026 theatrical release. Tow stars Rose Byrne as Ogle and currently holds a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
