Join my guest, Howard Holliday, and me as we discuss our recent professional development book club selection, The Slight Edge. While I hadn't intended to do book reviews on this podcast, I found the principles contained in this book to be too good not to share. Hope you enjoy our lively discussion of this and other books that have impacted our lives.    Resources: The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan The 10x Rule by Grant Cardone The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy The Success Principles by Jack Canfield War of Art by Steven Pressfield Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield The Bible (I'll let you select the version you prefer) The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Waddles Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins Howard Holliday Contact Information: On LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter Email: hholliday3@gmail.com   In the Buffalo area and interested in joining our Professional Development Book Club? It’s about creating the lifestyle you want to live and building a business around it. Creating a high profile career in fashion and lifestyle photography is gratifying, but what it took from me to get there is the real gift. During the last ten years of creating this career, I’ve learned a few things that might be useful to the up-and-comers. In this collection of episodes, I break down the process that I used to make a living with my art. These tips go beyond my world of photography and transcend into any creative venture. The lessons can be useful if you’re into illustration, fashion design, fashion blogging, music, performing arts, writing or any other creative hustle. Think of it like the DNA of a creative professional. Think of it like the building blocks of inspiration. This is the twelfth installment of my 15 part series on how to make a career in art. As much as the craft is important, the business is important as well. Some things we learn in this podcast: Why money isn’t an end all [2:05] How long it takes to get to what is the beginning of your career [2:20] Why you don’t have to go back to school to get a business degree [2:45] How you have to build a business around your art to live a full-time creative lifestyle [3:45] How having a mentor can help you learn the ropes of the business side [4:00] Why you should hire a consultant [4:30] Why you have to have a marketing plan that goes with your budget [5:40] Take advantage of the resources that are out there [6:50] Why you should read books about art and business and marketing [7:55] The value of networking and building relationships [8:50] Why it’s important to think about the lifestyle you want and build a business around that [9:25] Why you have to have a why to drive your business [10:30] The importance of having the drive and getting inspired [14:10] Why you have to be motivated to devour information [14:45] Links mentioned: Listen to the previous episodes of ShopTalk Radio mentioned: Episode 17 with Sean Stephenson  Episode 53 on Finding a Mentor Check out all of Lewis Howes resources Listen to The School of Greatness Podcast Buy The School of Greatness Book Learn from amazing online classes on Creative Live Here's the list of books recommended in this episode: Never Eat Alone Keith Ferrazzi 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell Start with Why by Simon Sinek Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki The War of Art by Steven Pressfield Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield The Brand Called You by Peter Montoya Essentialism by Greg McKeown Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon The Promise of a Pencil by Adam Braun Jab Jab right hook by Gary Vaynerchuk How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie The Art of Start by Guy Kawasaki Music Credit: Being Noticed by Lodent

So what books have you read that changed you? This show is about my list of some of the life-changing books I have read. Some of them may surprise you. Announcements: If you enjoy the podcast, I would consider it a great favor if you subscribe (and leave a review) in iTunes. I'm speaking at the Platform Conference in November. Tip of the Week: I discovered a neat little device that easily lets you clip you iPhone to the AC vent in your car. Surprisingly simple. It's the Kenu Airframe – Portable Smartphone Car Mount. Spiritual Foundations: How many times have you tried to lose weight, or quit smoking, or change some bad habit? Did you use willpower? How did that work out? Most will end up going overboard and binging on food cigarettes, sex, or whatever their “bad habit” was. Often you end up worse off that you were to start with. The reason is: you tried to do it on your own. God's promise is that he works in you both to do and will for his good pleasure. Repeat after me: “God, I can't do this, but you can!”Feature Segment: How to Write Emails That Get Response Feature Presentation: The Secret Book List That Changed My Life “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” Charlie “Tremendous” Jones Jesus Manifesto by Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola Destined to Reign by Joseph Prince Unmerited Favor by Joseph Prince Business For The Glory Of God by Wayne Grudem 80/20 Sales and Marketing by Perry Marshall The Alchemist Paulo Coelho The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan The Purpose Driven Church by Rick Warren Do the Work by Steven Pressfield The War of Art by Steven Pressfield Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield Platform by Michael Hyatt Accidental Genius: Using Wiring to Generate Your Best Ideas, Insight, and Content by Mark Levy Secrets of Dynamic Communications: Prepare With Focus, Deliver with Clarity, Speak with Power by Ken Davis The Stormlight Chronicles by Brandon Sanderson (Way of Kings, Words of Radiance) The Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss (The Name of the Wind, The Wise Man's Fear) Get The Transcript Click here to get the transcript. Transcripts provided by SuccessTranscripts – a great solution if you need your podcast, sermon, speech, or other audio transcribed.
