Discipleship isn't just about teaching others about Jesus—it's about living in His presence and helping others do the same. In this episode, Dr. Leonard Sweet joins the conversation to explore the deeper dimensions of discipleship, emphasizing the importance of presencing Jesus rather than merely presenting Him. He unpacks how understanding our humanity through Christ shapes our discipleship efforts in a world that often disconnects faith from daily life. The discussion also highlights the significance of stillness in our spiritual journey—how slowing down and truly abiding in Christ can transform the way we disciple others. Dr. Sweet challenges leaders to move beyond information-driven discipleship and instead cultivate a life that reflects Christ authentically. Whether you're leading a small group or mentoring others one-on-one, this conversation will encourage you to embrace a more relational and transformative approach to discipleship. If this episode encouraged you, take a moment to rate and review the podcast—your support helps others discover these conversations. What if the way we've been reading the Bible has been missing something essential? What if the Scriptures aren't just a collection of propositional truths, but a grand narrative - a story that Jesus Himself used to unveil the deepest realities of the Kingdom of God? That's the argument made by author and storyteller Daniel Schwabauer as we dive into the power of story in this conversation. Dan points us to a pivotal moment in the Gospels - when Jesus tells the parable of the sower in Mark 4. Here, he reveals a secret about the Kingdom, saying "The secret of the Kingdom of God has been given to you." But why parables? Why not just lay out the truth plainly? Well, Jesus was doing something profound - He was inviting His disciples, and us, into a narrative journey. One that requires engagement, interpretation, and the work of the Holy Spirit to truly understand. By recovering this narrative lens, the church can rediscover the true power of the gospel message. It's a fascinating exploration of how the way we communicate shapes what we communicate - and how applying the principles of great storytelling can breathe new life into the ancient story of redemption. Join us as we discover the God of story. Daniel Schwabauer, ThD, teaches English at MidAmerica Nazarene University and writes award-winning fantasy and science fiction novels. He earned an MA in creative writing under science fiction legend James Gunn and completed his doctoral work in semiotic theology with Leonard Sweet. Message Pastor JasonIn this illuminating episode, we embark on a transformative journey through the first part of our "Make Disciples" series, focusing on the profound theme of "light shining in the darkness." Drawing inspiration from Leonard Sweet's anecdote about a Swiss church's tradition, we explore the beautiful symbolism of light in our faith and community.Discover how the ancient instructions in Leviticus 24:1-4 about maintaining the Tabernacle's golden lampstand serve as a timeless metaphor for our role as bearers of God's light. As we delve into the significance of the lampstand, we'll uncover how the people of Israel were called to provide pure olive oil, symbolizing their commitment to be a light to the nations. We also connect this Old Testament imagery to the New Testament, where Jesus, our High Priest, tends to us and ensures we shine brightly in a world shrouded in darkness. Through an exploration of Revelation 1:20 and Philippians 2:15, we see how we, as the Church, are meant to reflect Jesus' light to those around us.Join us as we learn that our light is not just for ourselves but a beacon of hope for others. Your presence and light matter greatly to your church family and the world. Tune in and be inspired to let your light shine ever more brightly for the glory of God.Key Scriptures:Leviticus 24:1-4Revelation 1:20Philippians 2:15Topics Covered:Evangelism and DiscipleshipThe symbolism of light in ScriptureThe role of the Church in spreading God's lightListen now and let your light shine!Enjoy this message? Capital City Christian Church | Podcast

Philippians 1.21, do you remember it? Can you say it with me? … “To me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Yeah, there it is: “To me, to live (living, life to the fullest) is Christ, and to die is gain.” We're getting there. Let me come at it this way. Ben and I are drawing some of the big ideas for this series from a book called, “Jesus Manifesto,” by Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola. And, in chapter 6, they pull out a tweet from Twitter. That still sounds funny to me: “Tweeting on Twitter.” Anyway, this guy says, “There is no greater cause that you can give your life to than the cause of Christ.” Now, do you buy that? I know, you feel like you are supposed to, here in church; but do you actually buy that? Is it true? And, is that what Jesus is to you … the greatest cause you can give your life too. Kind of the king of causes? … Is that … enough?

In his season 3 podcast series, Cecil Taylor identifies and explores the Top 11 themes of Jesus, derived from the number of his mentions in the Gospels. Each month, Cecil will count down the themes toward the #1 theme. This month's episode is on the #4 theme, The New Creation. More than 60 times, Jesus described The New Creation that he brought to earth, usually known as the kingdom of God. But Jesus is partly the “new thing,” as well. On this podcast, Cecil explores samples of what Jesus said about The New Creation, breaking it down into the four sub-topics: proclamations that The New has come; explanations of The New Creation; statements indicating that Jesus himself is the path to The New Creation; and conviction of the Pharisees and any Jewish traditions that stray from the kingdom. Dr. Len Wilson is the interview guest in the second half of the podcast. His latest book, Telos: The Hope of Heaven, co-authored with Leonard Sweet, articulates the false narratives we have about the kingdom and defines what the kingdom truly is and how we can participate in it. The gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ...is all about the way in which the weakest, most despised, most difficult people in the world, can become through the power of God, the most beautiful, most radiant, people in the world. The gospel is all about how God finds gold in the garbage; how God does good things in bad times.  Or as Leonard Sweet puts it, "...whatever is buried trash in your life, God can turn into buried treasure.  Whatever you think are the trash cans of your existence, God can turn them into treasure chests." Some of you are going through garbage dump times and in this episode, as we look at the next part of Paul's letter to his friends in Philippi, I want to give you three good things about hard times.

Preaching Next-Level SermonsCan you honestly say you are always happy with every sermon you preach? Are you pleased with how you preached the sermon? Did you feel as though your sermon connected with the congregation? Or would you have to admit there is room for improvement? If we are truthful, we all know there is much room for improvement in our sermons and how we preach them.In this episode, we will consider Preaching Next-Level Sermons. I want to help us, as preachers, to take our preaching to the next level. But, you may be asking, “Isn't biblically true content enough? Isn't that enough if I preach the truth?”Well, yes, biblical content is what we should always strive to deliver when we preach. But, no, biblical content alone is not all we need to consider when developing and preaching our sermons.Consider this: Most of the people in your church have heard more sermons than they can count. Thus, they have probably heard plenty of sermons on the passage you're preaching on Sunday. And it could be that they've already heard you preach a sermon on the passage. But this does not mean we should find a new text. it means we should take steps to elevate our sermon to the next level. This is what I want to help us achieve.Leonard Sweet, in his book Giving Blood: A Fresh Paradigm For Preaching, puts it like this: “Preaching is nothing less than the craft of making the familiar strange… When our usual ways of ‘knowing' the Scriptures have become too cozy and comfortable, only defamiliarization enables us to hear the challenging stories of judgment and the hope within and behind the texts. When we open the Scriptures up to new angles and locate them in different contexts, we allow people to become reacquainted with texts that can shine new light into their shadowed doubts and dilemmas.”When we work hard to communicate the living word of God actively and freshly, we are pastoring and feeding our people well. When approaching a familiar passage from a new angle, we connect new dots in people's hearts, minds, and lives.Today, I will give you 23 elements you can use in your sermons to spark new thoughts and connections to the text for your listeners. Are you ready? Let's go.1. The text2. Takeaway(s)3. Fears4. Desires5. Aches6. Ultimate truths7. True stories8. Fiction stories9. Imaginative stories10. Cultural realities11. Attitudes12. Behaviors13. Applied future14. Personal Testimony15. Transitions16. Strongholds17. Bottom line18. Narratives19. Experiences20. Quotes21. Images22. Questions23. LiesIn their proper place, all these elements can help your sermon connect, come alive, and be used by God to change those who hear you preach. Let's put in the hard work necessary to take our sermons to the next level. Our preaching will evolve. Our listeners will experience a far greater impact. Our preaching will be exponentially better. We may even be more satisfied with the finished product.Support the showBe sure to subscribe to this podcast. Please leave us a review, and point your friends to this podcast. This convo, right here, may be one of my favorite podcasts we've done to date. Years ago “Church 3.0,” a book by Neil Cole, was heavily influential in my life. Understand, Neil didn't write the book in a digital context. When he wrote “Church 3.0,” very few people were doing anything in the digital ministry space. But when I read this book back in the early 2010s, all I could think about is how some of these practices could exist digitally. So, similar to our recent conversation with Leonard Sweet, I loved this opportunity to sit down with Neil Cole and talk to him about Digital Church. Mind you, we're taking Neil's ideas into a whole new realm, but I counted it a pleasure to talk with another pioneer in a unique space. We delved into it in the conversation, but Neil was a decade or two before his time! As many contemporaries today are praised for their work in micro church areas, Neil was criticized for his work in the space (and, to be honest, I can relate to that). We even brought into the convo Jason Morris, who arguably is the smartest man in all of digital ministry, who was also influenced strongly by Neil's book...So, looking for a conversation involving three out-of-the-box thinkers about a micro/digital approach to church, where we also talk about the turmoil of pioneering in church space? He reminds listeners to stay in love with Jesus. Len hopes each student he teaches falls more deeply in love with Jesus as he educates them. Can more of today's leaders live with that goal? Sweet declares that his faith is becoming more simple while his theology is becoming more complex. He seeks to become more childlike in his faith while becoming more wise in his theology. He hopes we balance time in society and time in solitude. He dares us to include humor in our stories just as Jesus did. As we lead, can we make it all about Jesus and lead like Jesus? In a world of what he calls “erupting volcanos,” Len presents his perspective on not just being relevant but incarnating the gospel into whatever the culture is. Leonard Sweet lives his life by putting himself in a position where he can experience things in a new – and sometimes strange – ways in order to have fresh eyes. The Russian term for this is ‘ostranenie' – seeing the familiar in unfamiliar ways in order to understand it better or more deeply. Selah.”   [Psalm 39:5]Our Spiritual Adversary would have everyone believe that we are all “one” because God is “in” everyone and everything. Using every promotional means possible—including a creative and ingenious perversion of quantum physics—he is attempting to convince the world and the church that while Jesus was Christ, so is everyone.Be Still and Know That You are Not God!—God is Not “in” Everyone and Everything Warren B. Smith is a former social worker who directed several homeless programs in Northern California and served as a hospice social worker in New Orleans and on the California coast. Prior to coming to Christ, Warren was involved in the New Age movement. That experience has prompted him to write extensively on the subject of spiritual deception in the church. His books include Deceived on Purpose, False Christ Coming - Does Anybody Care?, The Light That Was Dark, A "Wonderful" Deception, and "Another Jesus" Calling. Warren is a frequent speaker at conferences and on radio and television READ BOOKLET - Be Still and Know That You are Not God!—God is Not “in” Everyone and Everything -Rise of Oneness-Ark of Oneness-False Teachers-False Christs Coming-Quantum Physics-Leonard Sweet-Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (Father of The New Age)(1971) Pierre Teilhard de Chardin in Christianity and Evolution—Teilhard de Chardin, the “Father” of the New Age Movement and frequently quoted by undiscerning Christian leaders, wrote:I can be saved only by becoming one with the universe.8What I am proposing to do is to narrow the gap between Pantheism and Christianity by bringing out what one might call the Christian soul of pantheism or the pantheistic aspect of Christianity.9Christ Our Savior The apostle Paul proclaimed that all he needed to know was Christ and Christ crucified:For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. (1 Corinthians 2:2)Yet Paul also said we should not be “ignorant” of Satan's “devices” (2 Corinthians 2:11).Paul further stated it is “a shame” we have to talk about “the unfruitful works of darkness,” but we must “reprove” them—expose them—by bringing them into the “light”:And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. (Ephesians 5:11-13)At the same time, Paul reminds us that there is a “simplicity” in Christ:But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. Show Notes:The place of Christianity in the greater culture is constantly changing. With constant changes comes increased challenges for Christians in terms of maintaining integrity in terms of witness and practice. What are the new ways that temptation permeates our daily lives? How do we stand firm in timeless convictions in ever changing times? How do we set our eyes on Jesus Christ despite the circumstances of the world around us?In today's episode of The Weight, we engage these questions with Leonard Sweet, a scholar of United States culture, semiotician, historian, and United Methodist minister. Currently serving as the E. Stanley Jones Professor Emeritus at Drew Theological School, Sweet has built a reputation as one of the most influential voices in Christianity who seeks to communicate the Gospel by bridging together the worlds of faith, academia, and culture. Sweet is passionate about the role of the Church in the world and what a faithful future can look like for the people of Jesus Christ, especially in an increasingly divisive culture. In this episode, Sweet speaks bluntly about the aspects of today's world that concern him, but also offers a vision of Christianity as a faith that isn't separated from the culture of the world, but indigenous in it. He challenges listeners to recognize the ways that the Spirit of God can work through the culture of the world to make miracles happen and “bring the best out of the worst.”Resources:Check out Len Sweet's book “Ring of Fire: Walking in Faith Through a Volcanic Future”https://www.amazon.com/Rings-Fire-Walking-through-Volcanic/dp/1631463942Listen to Len Sweet's podcast “Napkin Scribbles”https://leonardsweet.com/podcasts/Follow Len Sweet on the web: https://leonardsweet.com/Follow Len Sweet on Twitter: https://twitter.com/lensweetFollow Len Sweet on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/LensSweetSpots
