This is the second time I've had Jon on The Ziglar Show and he has a knack for bringing profound personal development messages to us in an entertaining and highly digestible perspective. I admire his way to connect with where people are in the reality of their lives. A reality that as you're about to hear, he says we manufacture, and I sincerely agree. In this episode you'll hear us dig into issues such as; We think our memory is a GoPro recording of “reality”, when in fact we're just filtering it through our own cognitive bias, one that has a quick decline in memory consistency. But we base our beliefs on it. Jon asks, “Why is it so easy to repeat negative soundtracks about myself internally and so hard to repeat positive soundtracks about myself externally?” The premise of his new book and message is we are living from soundtracks in our mind we often need to Retire, Replace, then Repeat with the new ones, over and over. Jon discusses with me how our brain builds on overthinking's habit of negativity by doing three additional things: Lying about your memories, confusing fake trauma with real trauma, and believing what it already believes. And we start in on his insight into no single good event in our life has as much lasting impact as trauma. So...what do we do with it? That is what you're about to hear about. [REBROADCAST FROM September 22, 2021] Chef Mina Stone, who helms Mina's at MoMA PS1, joins us to discuss her latest cookbook, Lemon, Love & Olive Oil, which combines her Greek and Jewish heritage into hearty, citrusy recipes.   CACIO E PEPE–INSPIRED KALE SALAD This is my version of having the idea of a decadent pasta, in salad form. It has the flavor components of a cacio e pepe, set against the backdrop of a hearty forest of green kale. The kale stands up to the challenge, providing a healthy vehicle for the tangy salty cheese, crunchy hazelnuts, and spicy black pepper. Serves 4 to 6 6 cups (400 g) lacinato or curly green kale (about 2 bunches)Extra virgin olive oilJuice and zest of 1 lemonSalt and freshly ground black pepper½ cup (40 g) grated pecorino cheese½ cup (65 g) hazelnuts, toasted (see page 9) and chopped Cut out the thick middle rib of the kale leaves or tear it off with your hands. Layer a few kale leaves on top of each other and cut into bite-size pieces. Repeat until all the kale is done. (Alternatively, you can cut the kale into ribbon-size pieces for a “pasta” look.) Put the kale in a serving bowl and massage it with enough olive oil to coat each leaf. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, a sprinkle of salt, and lots of freshly ground black pepper. When you are ready to serve, toss the kale with most of the cheese and most of the hazelnuts and garnish with the rest. Finish with freshly ground black pepper and serve. Ready to Lead
Having Corrective Conversations in a Timely and Constructive Way

Ready to Lead

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 25, 2021 54:45

Corrective conversations are never fun, but as leaders, it's our responsibility to help people become better versions of themselves.    Today's episode with co-hosts Richard Lindner and Jeff Mask is all about having those difficult, but necessary, corrective conversations. How do you give correction? When do you give it? How do you do it well? It can be an easy thing to mess up, and Jeff and Richard want to help people avoid that pain.    Listen in as they talk about why correction matters and how to do it in a way that truly benefits everyone.   WHY Have Corrective Conversations?   Why is it so important for leaders to give timely correction when something gets off track? The biggest reason is this: we need to lead people for who they can become, not for who they are today. We want the people we lead to become their best selves, and a lot of everyday actions prohibit them (and us) from doing that.   Jeff says that, as leaders, we have the ability to change the trajectory of ourselves and those we lead. When we don't give that feedback, we're not helping people see the implications of their behavior so they can be better. It's an obligation, an opportunity, a blessing, to help people elevate their thinking and behavior. When we don't, we're just thinking about ourselves.   Richard says that the hardest pivot for him was changing the way he thought about correction. It doesn't have to mean confrontation. Correction isn't necessarily coming from a place of judgment. It doesn't mean the person is bad. There's just an action that needs changing. It's pain avoidance when we don't have these corrective conversations. We like to lie to ourselves and think we're protecting the other person from pain, but we're protecting ourselves.    WHEN to Have Corrective Conversations   Jeff once had a team member whose behavior was not in line with their core values. It wasn't off-the-charts horrible, but he knew he needed to talk to this person and kept putting it off. His delay resulted in a chain of events that occurred in a short period of time that was very destructive to the brand of their company and the overall vibe of their team. It got out of hand quickly because Jeff didn't have the courage to address it at that moment.    If something strikes you as off on your core values, that's your first and clearest red flag. Core values can be a guiding light for how to behave. Maybe you have that spidey sense that something is odd or a little uncomfortable—or you notice a reaction or body language from the person that person is talking to. In a virtual world, this can be more difficult. Don't avoid it and let it grow into a larger problem down the road.    Richard always looks at attitude, effort, and effectiveness. Those are the categories he puts things in when evaluating each team member. If something is off in any of these categories, then a conversation is needed. Attitude and effort are more of a corrective conversation. Effectiveness is more of an exploratory conversation.    Jeff says that Richard married data and intuition. Data can be taught; intuition can't be. Going down the intuitive path (spidey sense) isn't helpful if there's only an intangible aspect. You need intuition + data.    Definitely don't wait until the time is right, because it never will be. Don't wait until your next one on one. The more time that goes by without correction, the more it communicates that the behavior is acceptable. This is how a good work culture deteriorates.    Have the conversation that same day—with one caveat. If there's a blow-up and someone loses their cool, that needs to be dealt with, but there needs to be a cooling off period. The deeper question is: how do we know if we are calm enough as a leader to offer the correction? If my motive to correct is in love and care for the person, I know I'm ready.    Cool down. Get your mindset right. The outcome of the correction will be vastly different.   Learn to give the benefit of the doubt. Fight the urge to go to the worst story. What's the best possible version? Come from a place of curiosity. What do you need to do to break you from that triggering place and help you calm down? Jumping jacks? Rehearse Ted Lasso quotes? Take a walk?   WHERE to Have Corrective Conversations   You've heard the phrase “praise in public, correct in private,” right? For the most part, Jeff likes that statement, but with caveats. If you're leading a leadership team, and there's a behavior that's off, hopefully you have enough trust within the team to address it at the moment. You can say something like: “This isn't how we roll. We hold ourselves to a higher standard.” When you don't correct in public, you've communicated that it's tolerated. Or, worst case, “ah, there's the leader's favorite.”   Jeff shared a story of a time he was meeting with a team doing annual planning. It was all about creating a future you don't know exists yet. People's livelihoods were on the line. The energy from one team member was very negative (“this is why it can't be done”). Jeff is a fan of constructive criticism, but he's not a fan of looking for all the reasons “why not,” and sucking all the life out of a room.   It was the middle of day one of a two-day meeting, and Jeff told the guy in front of the rest of the team, “You know I love you, so before I say anything, I need you to know that. Everything coming out of your mouth is why things can't happen. I need your help to change it from why it can't to what needs to be in place for it to happen. Sometimes you act like a victim, and I need you to be the champion you are.”   He looked at Jeff, and the rest of the team looked at Jeff, but Jeff knew he had done what he needed to do. The whole energy for the year they were creating was getting destroyed by one negative person. That happened 10 years ago, and 3 different times that guy has told Jeff that that one conversation was more pivotal than any other conversation in his career. “When you called me a victim in front of everybody else, at first I was pissed,” he said. “But I knew you were right, and I had a choice to make. I had to change.”   HOW to Have Corrective Conversations   All of this leads to HOW. How do we have a corrective conversation that leads to the desired outcome of growth, change, and alignment?   First, how NOT to: don't use a medium that's not open to corrective conversation. Not Slack, text, or email. This needs to be done over Zoom or in person. Don't start it with written communication. It feels efficient, but don't do it. It doesn't end well 99.99% of the time. The intent isn't understood. It's more judging than curious. We're missing out on the richness of nonverbal communication. The person will read the written text through the tone of what they're feeling, like we all do.   Remember, from the book, Fierce Conversations—I want to talk with you, not I need to talk to you. Want and with, not need and to. Start with that, pull them aside, and say, “let's chat for 15 minutes.” When your motive is love and care, the energy will be so different. When you're annoyed and want to stick it to them, they know it.    Another tip: replace “but” with “and.” Don't say a bunch of good stuff about them, then say “but.” Say the good stuff, and use “and.” I know you're kind and good AND I think there's a problem with x. Then ask inquisitive, thoughtful, inspiring questions. Not incriminating and condescending. “Hey, I saw this happen, and I'm curious, how did that occur to you?” At the very beginning, seek to understand their point of view. “What were you feeling when this happened?” is sooo much better than “what were you thinking?” Richard likes to ask: “What were you reacting to?”   Repeat what they just said, using slightly different wording. “What I hear you saying is ________.” And then the next question is the pivot. “So how do you think it occurred to the other person in the situation?” If you start with them, they won't react with self-preservation. They'll feel safe and can access that higher level of thinking. They can empathize with the other person. Then you can tell them how it occurred to you.   How did it occur to you? What were you feeling? What were you reacting to? How do you think it occurred to [the other person]? This is how it occurred to me.   Key Takeaways What are we doing as leaders? We're inviting people to change their behavior for the good. We're not forcing, pushing, or requiring. Inspire, not require. Inspiration comes through thoughtful, well-worded questions. When they see in you the passion for them to become better, they can't help but become better. They'll rise to the occasion.    Richard suggests a why, why, how sequence: Why is what happened detrimental? Why is the action going to keep you/the company from meeting goals? How are you going to get in alignment?   Last step: follow everything up with an email. “Thanks, Dan, for the conversation today. Just wanted to recap so we're on the same page. Can you give me a quick reply to this email to confirm that you received it and agree?”   Hopefully you heard some actionable steps you can take. Put your own personal twist on it. You've got this.   Richard and Jeff want to hear from YOU. Was something in today's episode a big aha moment for you? Anything you disagreed with? Courtesy of Alexandra Vang Pumpkin pie from Pie & Mighty in Minneapolis Are you looking forward to eating a slice of pie this Thanksgiving? Or two slices? Maybe you're planning to make one. Pie is a classic finale to a holiday feast, comforting and distinctly American. Do you like pumpkin or sweet potato? Pecan or apple?   Many people discovered baking during the pandemic. But turning out that flaky pie crust can intimidate new bakers.  Host Angela Davis got tips from pie experts and listeners and explored why eating and making pies nourish our family and cultural traditions. Guests:  Rachel Swan is co-owner and chief pie baker at Pie & Mighty in Minneapolis. After years working in the restaurant industry she started selling pies by subscription in 2016 and opened the brick-and-mortar shop in 2020.    Ken Haedrich is founder of the online pie-making community thepieacademy.com and author of 16 cookbooks, including a comprehensive guide to pies for new and experienced bakers published last year, “Pie Academy: Master the Perfect Crust and 255 Amazing Fillings, with Fruits, Nuts, Creams, Custards, Ice Cream, and More.”  Lachelle Cunningham runs Chelle's Kitchen, a catering and food education business based in Minneapolis. She was previously founding executive chef at Breaking Bread Cafe, which opened in 2015 in north Minneapolis and still serves a variation of her uncle's sweet potato pie recipe.  Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation. We also asked listeners to tell us about their favorite pie recipes. Check them out below and tell us about your favorite here. Pumpkin Pie (with a kick!) Mix these 8 dry ingredients together in small bowl: 1 cup sugar1 tbsp. flour1/2 tsp. salt1 tsp. ginger1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. nutmeg1/8 tsp. ground black pepper1/8 tsp. cloves In large bowl mix: 3 large eggs1 1/2 cups pumpkin scant 1 cup light cream Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients stir well, pour into a 9” unbaked pie crust. Bake 45-55 minutes at 400 degrees in the oven. Let cool, serve with whipped cream and grated nutmeg on top or with vanilla ice cream. Karen's Pie Crust Mix together until pea sized pieces:3 cups flour1 1/4 cups butter 1 tsp. salt In one cup measure, mix: 1/4 cup cold waterI beaten egg1 tbsp. white vinegar Pour liquids into dry ingredients, mix to form a ball.Put flour onto board, divide dough into four equal pieces. Each ball is enough for 1 crust. The unbaked dough can stay in refrigerator for up to a week or freeze dough in small piece or in a rolled out pie crust. Penny's 5 ingredient Last Minute Pie I bring this when invited last minute. I stop at the store to pick up the items. When I arrive, I ask for a spatula and a mixing bowl. (I offer to do dishes in trade for my friends letting me in the kitchen for a few moments. ;-) ) 10" Graham cracker crust1 can sweetened condensed milk1 package Lemonade drink mix1 regular size Cool Whip1 can blueberry pie filling Put condensed milk in bowl, add lemonade drink mix. Stir until it starts to thicken. Add Cool Whip. Stir until completely mixed. Pour in crust. Top with berries. Put in refrigerator until after meal. Don't forget to do the dishes! (I use other drink mixes and pie fillings, too.) Festal Golden Pumpkin Pie Recipe by Marian Biersdorf, aka The Pumpkin Pie Lady! 1/4 (or 1/2) tsp. salt1 tsp. cinnamon1/4 tsp. cloves1/4 tsp. nutmeg1/4 tsp. ginger3 eggs, slightly beaten1 cup granulated or light brown sugar1 15 oz. can pumpkin puree1 cup evaporated (or regular) milk1 9-inch deep-dish pie crust, unbaked Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In a large bowl, combine salt, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger, and mix. Add eggs and sugar. Mix well. Stir in pumpkin. Add milk and beat well.Pour pumpkin filling into crust. Bake for 10 minutes at 450. Reduce heat to 350 degrees, and bake additional 40 to 45 minutes. Test for doneness by inserting knife into pie center. The pie is done when the knife comes out clean. Garnish with choice of topping. (Marian reduces the salt to 1/4 teaspoon. She also says it's fine to replace the evaporated milk with skim milk, to reduce the calorie and fat content.) Mixed Fruit Pie A 9 inch pie — double crust. 1 and 1/4 of blueberries, raspberries, rhubarb of any variation.1/2 tsp. of almond flavoring1 and 1/4 cup of sugar — or less1/4 cup of quick tapioca1/4 tsp. of nutmeg1/4 tsp. of salt1 tbsp. lemon juice Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes, then at 375 degrees for 45-50 minutes. Variation on the ‘Stir-N-Roll' crust Submitted by Louise DiCesare. I use a completely different way to make the crust from Betty Crocker's original cookbook called Stir-N-Roll. Mix 2 cups sifted flour and 1 1/2 tsp. salt (I don't use any salt) Next, pour 1/2 cup cooking oil (I use Canola) and 1/4 cup of milk into the flour all at once. Stir with a fork. Wet countertop and put a piece of wax paper so the wax paper won't move. Put half the dough on the wax paper and put another piece of wax paper on top of the dough. Roll it out with a rolling pin. Lift off top sheet of wax paper and pick up bottom sheet with crust and flip onto the baking dish. Repeat with top crust. Make any filling and you can use a form to make the top crust to make it a lattice or separate top crust with a knife. A number of years ago I started making a list of all the things one needed to know about investing. I wanted to capture the favorite quotes I have read and the lessons I have learned. This ended up being a more ambitious project than I envisaged, and it remains an ongoing one. So, in today's show, Mark Creedon and I are going to share with you a list of 24 things we believe you need to understand about investing, the economy, and business, and this list is based on the musings of Morgan Housell, my favorite finance writer, and I'm sure you'll gain some insights from my chat with Mark today whether you're a beginning or an experienced investor or a businessperson. 24 Lessons About Investing and the Economy Over the years one of my favorite columnists whose articles I read regularly is Morgan Housell who used to write for Motley Fool and now writes for Collaborative Fun He writes a lot about behavioral finance and why supposedly rational people act irrationally when it comes to money, finance, and business. A number of years ago he wrote a great column where he detailed 122 things everyone should know about investing and the economy and there were some great lessons to take away from that article. I've pulled a number of these out today to discuss with my business partner Mark Creedon founder of Business Accelerator Mastermind. Saying “I'll be greedy when others are fearful” is easier than actually doing it.  When most people say they want to be a millionaire, what they really mean is “I want to spend $1 million,” which is literally the opposite of being a millionaire.  Daniel Kahneman's book Thinking Fast and Slow begins, “The premise of this book is that it is easier to recognize other people's mistakes than your own.” This should be every market commentator's motto. As Erik Falkenstein says: “In expert tennis, 80% of the points are won, while in amateur tennis, 80% are lost. The same is true for wrestling, chess, and investing: Beginners should focus on avoiding mistakes, experts on making great moves.”  There is a difference between, “He predicted the crash of 2008,” and “He predicted crashes, one of which happened to occur in 2008.” It's important to know the difference when praising investors. Wealth is relative. As comedian Chris Rock said, “If Bill Gates woke up with Oprah's money he'd jump out the window.” The Financial Times wrote, “In 2008 the three most admired personalities in sport were probably Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong, and Oscar Pistorius.” The same falls from grace happen in investing. Choose your role models carefully. Investor Nick Murray once said, “Timing the market is a fool's game, whereas time in the market is your greatest natural advantage.” Remember this the next time you're compelled to cash out..  Jason Zweig writes, “The advice that sounds the best in the short run is always the most dangerous in the long run.” Billionaire investor Ray Dalio once said, “The more you think you know, the more closed-minded you'll be.” Repeat this line to yourself the next time you're certain of something.   John Reed once wrote, “When you first start to study a field, it seems like you have to memorize a zillion things. You don't. What you need is to identify the core principles — generally three to twelve of them — that govern the field. The millions of things you thought you had to memorize are simply various combinations of the core principles.” Keep that in mind when getting frustrated over complicated financial formulas. James Grant says, “Successful investing is about having people agree with you … later.” Scott Adams writes, “A person with a flexible schedule and average resources will
be happier than a rich person who has everything except a flexible schedule. Step one in your search for happiness is to continually work toward having control of your schedule.” Investors want to believe in someone. Forecasters want to earn a living. One of those groups is going to be disappointed. I think you know which. As the saying goes, “Save a little bit of money each month, and at the end of the year you'll be surprised at how little you still have.”  John Maynard Keynes once wrote, “It is safer to be a speculator than an investor in the sense that a speculator is one who runs risks of which he is aware, and an investor is one who runs risks of which he is unaware.” Our memories of financial history seem to extend about a decade back. “Time heals all wounds,” the saying goes. It also erases many important lessons.  You are under no obligation to read or watch financial news. If you do, you are under no obligation to take any of it seriously. Most economic news that we think is important doesn't matter in the long run. Derek Thompson of The Atlantic once wrote, “I've written hundreds of articles about the economy in the last two years. But I think I can reduce those thousands of words to one sentence. Things got better, slowly.”  The “evidence is unequivocal,” Daniel Kahneman writes, “there's a great deal more luck than skill in people getting very rich.” There is a strong correlation between knowledge and humility. The best investors realize how little they know. Not a single person in the world knows what the market will do in the short run. The more someone is on TV, the less likely his or her predictions are to come true.  How long you stay invested will likely be the single most important factor determining how well you do at investing. Your buddy gives you a house tour and you’re like, “Wow Seth five bathrooms that’s so many more bathrooms than I expected you would ever have when we used to throw stale donuts at backyard racoons for sport.” But really do you care about Seth’s bathroom inventory? You don’t care.I don’t know how many bathrooms Jackson Hole has. And neither do you. And neither does anyone else, because no one has ever counted them. Because the point of Jackson is not boujee American materialism but the tram blowing 4,000-plus feet up the mountain and the rowdy endless kingdom of snowy lines beneath it. This is a place that stands out. In any context. It is the peak of U.S. skiing. It has biggers but no betters. A few peers, maybe. Alta-Snowbird. Palisades Tahoe. Big Sky. What else? For raw terrain, no one. Not in this country. It may be – it probably is – our greatest ski resort. If the aliens arrived and said “Hey you’ve got 24 hours to evacuate before we blow up your planet and I’m sorry but you’re only allowed to bring one ski area per country,” I have little doubt that U.S. Americans would choose Jackson Hole to load aboard the space ark. Lines are gonna be long though because I heard the aliens floated by Costco and picked up a few crates of Ikon Passes on their way off the planet. Sorry bros. What we talked aboutMary Kate’s globe-trotting decades with Disney and Nike at the dawn of ecommerce; running a vineyard in Tuscany and how that connected back to skiing; settling down in Jackson Hole after living and skiing all over the world; why she joined the ski area’s board of directors and eventually accepted an offer to become the resort’s president; how much the head of Jackson Hole gets to ski; taming the beast to open pieces of Jackson’s vast terrain to beginners and families; the mountain’s fierce terrain; how to prepare to drop into Corbet’s Couloir; whether Jackson Hole could ever expand its managed footprint out onto the gated terrain that surrounds it; where the ski area thinned glades over the summer; why the Jackson Hole Tram is the true alpha lift of American skiing; whether the mountain would ever install a redundant lift to the summit; the benefits of limiting uphill capacity; details on coming replacements for Thunder and Sublette; where the mountain could install an all-new lift; whether we could ever see a lift on the Hobacks; whether we could see a six- or eight-pack on Jackson Hole; how and why the resort limits the number of skiers on the mountain; where the mountain widened trails over the summer; why Jackson Hole closes down in early April despite a healthy snowbase remaining on the mountain; the mountain’s growing reliance on and commitment to renewable energy; the Ikon Pass lands like an asteroid; the persistence of anti-Ikon sentiment; why the resort can’t share Ikon Pass visit numbers and why it wishes it could; why Jackson Hole moved off of the Ikon Base Pass and how that decision turned out; how Jackson Hole season passholders reacted to the inclusion of an Ikon Base Pass with their JHMR season pass; whether the ski area would ever leave the Ikon Pass; how JHMR locals and tourists can get along; why Jackson Hole has stayed on the Mountain Collective Pass even as the Ikon has taken root; the impossible puzzle of mountain-town housing amid the short-term rental phenomenon and Covid-era remote-worker relocations; staffing challenges as ski season closes in; thoughts on diversifying Jackson Hole’s workforce and clientele; developing more opportunities for women to run a ski resort; reflections on the 2020-21 ski season versus expectations over the uncertain summer of 2020; looking forward to fully loading lifts this season; Covid-era adaptations that will stick and those that will fade; and thoughts on Jackson Hole owner Jay Kemmerer’s political activities and their fallout. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interviewBecause there seems to be few issues inside or outside of skiing that Jackson Hole is not sitting dead in the middle of. It is a ski area too grand not to visit, irresistible to the resort-hopping megapass set who blow into town on the ever-improving transit routes, which have transformed a once-semi-hidden ski-bum paradise into skiing’s Times Square. It’s the archetype of the broken mountain town, its housing model shattered by short-term rentals and cityfolk Covid refugees, a place struggling to keep its sense of place. On the hill, it’s a living experiment in skiing’s ongoing calibration between uphill capacity and overall capacity. It’s the flagship resort for a white-majority sport in an increasingly diversifying nation; an enormous, energy-intensive operation reliant on historical weather patterns to survive; and a woman-led institution in a sport whose gender-diversity efforts have been, historically, poor. It’s seated in a state determined to have it out with the federal government over mask mandates, owned by a rich benefactor to Qanon conspiracists, turned upside down by the Covid disruption that’s undone us all to some degree. Name a modern controversy, and it’s unfolding in some form or another beneath this amazing mountain, a place as complex and labyrinthian and nuanced as the nation it’s stationed in.Why you should ski Jackson HoleI mean do I really need to include this section? For Jackson Hole?OK fine. First, some historical perspective, from the 1966 edition of America’s Ski Book:Just below the Aspen-Vail-Sun Valley quality are a series of resorts of more specialized appeal. At Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a massive complex is taking shape offering the longest vertical drop in the United States – 4,135 vertical feet. It is too early to tell what role Jackson will play in the Rocky Mountain scheme of things, but it is bound to loom large. Then this, from Jeremy Evans’ In Search of Powder:…Jackson Hole opened in 1965 with minimal success, totaling about 19,000 skier visits that season. … Jackson Hole had some built-in disadvantages in its quest to become a major player in American skiing. It had a visionary owner, sure, but Paul [McCollister] wasn’t very realistic. Jackson was more isolated than Aspen and Vail, which were within five hours of Denver, and to a lesser degree Sun Valley. All three were considered the finest places to ski in the country. … After numerous complications involving funding, weather, and construction, the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram opened in 1966, and the resort experienced low visits that season as well. … [But] regardless of who owned the resort or how many hotels, shops, and restaurants were in Teton Village, Jackson Hole had a problem no amount of infrastructure could solve: nobody was good enough to ski it.Well I am happy to report from the future that Jackson Hole turned out just fine. Gear got better, skiers got better, access got easier, and here we are. Jackson Hole is it. For U.S. Americans, it’s the closest thing we have to a skier’s pilgrimage. You have to do it. Lap the tram, peer over the edge of Corbet’s, go for it or don’t. Meander back down or race the tram. Repeat as long as you can take it.What I got wrongSeveral times, I referred to Mary Kate’s job as resort “CEO,” when she is in fact resort president. More Jackson HoleLift Blog’s inventory of Jackson Hole’s lift fleetHistoric Jackson Hole trailmaps on skimap.orgMary Kate is a cofounder and co-owner of Urlari wines.A note on my claim in the intro that Jackson Hole has the largest contiguous lift-served vertical drop in America: yes, Timberline now claims more vert, at 4,540 feet. But it’s a convoluted route available only when the upper mountain is open and roads between the core Timberline ski area and tiny Summit Pass are snow-covered. The return trip to the top takes a shuttle, a chairlift, a hot-air balloon ride, a rope bridge across a chasm, a swim through an alligator-infested swamp, an the A-Team-style assembly of a combat vehicle from a barn full of old parts near the summit. So yeah not the same thing as just taking a tram to the top.More on Big Red:Some basic stoke:Support The Storm by shopping at our partners: Patagonia | Helly Hansen | Rossignol | Salomon | Utah Skis | Berg’s Ski and Snowboard Shop | Peter Glenn | Kemper Snowboards | Gravity Coalition | Darn Tough | Skier's Peak | Hagan Ski Mountaineering | Moosejaw | Skis.com |The House | Telos Snowboards | Christy Sports | Evo | Black Diamond Subscribe at www.stormskiing.com

In this episode of Start With A Win, Adam welcomes bestselling author and motivational speaker Jon Acuff. Adam and Jon dive into the topic of overthinking and how it can cripple us in so many areas of our lives. According to Jon, overthinking is when what you think gets in the way of what you want. Overthinking is the sneakiest form of fear that keeps us from achieving our goals, taking on new opportunities, or just getting through that tough meeting at work. That overthinking writes soundtracks in our minds—those repetitive thoughts that weigh us down.Jon breaks down his proven plan to change overthinking from a super problem into a superpower through The 3 Rs: Retire broken soundtracks, Replace them with new soundtracks, Repeat those new soundtracks.Jon is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books—his latest, Soundtracks: The Surprising Solution to Overthinking, released April 2021 and is already a bestseller. He's an INC Magazine Top 100 Leadership speaker and has spoken to hundreds of thousands of people at conferences and companies around the world including FedEx, Nissan, Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Chick-fil-A, Nokia and Comedy Central. Backseat Bible Nuggets

There are so many things that can be earned in life. Think about it…maybe you do chores to earn allowance money. Maybe, at this time of year, you are trying to be on your best behavior to earn your gifts for Christmas. Maybe you recently played your hardest to earn a trophy or championship for your sports team. Or maybe you've even earned a free haircut like I did the other day by going to the same place 9 times and earning that 10th cut for free!We understand the concept of working or putting in effort in order to EARN something. Like cause and effect. If I do this, then I'll earn that. But guess what? This isn't how God's kingdom operates. In fact, you've probably heard of the word ‘grace' before, right? Grace is defined as God's powerful kindness poured out on the undeserving. Repeat after me: Grace is….kindness to the undeserving…Did you hear anything about earning God's grace in that definition? Sometimes adults define grace as God's unmerited favor. That's just a fancy way of saying that He blesses us even though we don't deserve it and we've done nothing to earn it.And listen closely, we CAN'T earn His grace. His grace is a free gift for all BECAUSE of what Jesus did on the cross.Let's back up for a second… Okay, we actually see God's grace in every area of life. In fact, my life and your life and everything exists in creation because of God's grace – His kindness to the undeserving. Everyone experiences God's grace on that level, even if they don't realize it. However, God's grace is much much bigger than that in that it saves us from our sin. Because we are sinful, we cannot earn His love or even a ticket to heaven by doing lots of good things. No, it's ONLY God's grace – His kindness to the undeserving – through what Jesus did on the cross that can save us from our sins and allow us to walk with God now and live with Him forever. I'm going to say that again because there's a lot there…It's ONLY God's grace, through what Jesus did on the cross, that can save us from our sins and allow us to walk with God now and live with Him forever.Ephesians 2:8 says “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”We have done nothing and there is nothing we can do to save us from our sins. We have done nothing and there is nothing we can do to earn God's love and forgiveness. It's only by grace that we are saved. Wow! What an awesome God we serve! He offers us grace even though we don't deserve it.Here are some questions to talk about. You can pause after each question and discuss or just generally review together when it's over. Oh, and this is important! There's no wrong answer to these! The point is to get conversation flowing. So don't overthink it!1.     How have you experienced the concept of grace in your life? Maybe it was grace from a parent, teacher, or friend. When have you seen someone treat you with grace even though you didn't deserve it?2.     What is God's grace? Tell me in your own words.3.     How do some people still try to earn God's grace? One last time, let's practice our verse together. You can repeat after me. “For it is by grace you have been saved,  - through faith – and this is not from yourselves, -  it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8 *Music: "Forest" by Vlad Gulschenko

**This episode is brought to you by MuteSix, Repeat, and CartText**   “What I can do differently, I'm going to do it right away” that's Ben's approach to differentiating his brand. In part 1, we have Ben Lebowitz, Founder and CEO of West & Willow, a brand that creates custom pet portraits. Ben has worked in advertising, specifically in social media and digital marketing, for a little less than ten years, and five years ago, he decided to quit his full-time job. He was fascinated by a print-on-demand video that he came across through YouTube. Later, he experienced his light bulb moment when his mom drew a charcoal portrait for his dog. West & Willow had identical competitors, so Ben hired PR, SEO, and media agencies to differentiate his company. According to him, the only way to differentiate is through building a brand. He talks about: * Gratefulness * Overview of the brand * Where was he before West & Willow * His light bulb moment * Low barrier of entry business model * How to differentiate Join Ramon Vela and Ben Lebowitz as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   Happy Sensational Sunday, Todays breath is Conquer Breath (Ujjayi Pranayama) which Boosts energy and regulates blood pressure by increasing oxygenTo do it: Inhale through the nose while gently contracting the back of your throat (this makes a soft snoring sounding). Exhale slowly through the nose while keeping your throat contracted. Repeat this cycle for several minutes. Let's do this together: Inhale through the nose while gently contracting the back of your throat (this makes a soft snoring sounding). Stand tall, pull your shoulders back and smile! Be your best and believe in you!  Let's repeat it three times:We all need vitamin D. It is scientifically proven that without it people can suffer from great depression. Sunshine is a perfect natural vitamin D producer in our bodies. If the sun is out there, get out in it, even if it is for a few minutes due to the cold. You will feel more energetic and happy by just letting that sunshine on your face. Take it in for a few minutes. Let it absorb into your skin and body. It will rejuvenate you and invigorate you and it is free!!! The sunshine just brings out the best in us-the smiles, happiness and laughter! Get outside and get some Sunshine!  Let's repeat it three times:Sunshine's the best medicineSunshine's the best medicineSunshine's the best medicine Have a great Sensational Sunday!

Help me spread understanding and compassion Hi, Craig here :) Through a combination of hard work and luck I've gotten inside access to the brilliant minds and lives of people all over the world. Since 2015 I've tried to show respect and humility by giving back and sharing conversations through the Movers Mindset project. I've already been able to talk with over one hundred people, and have shared those conversations with thousands. I have a lot more work to do, but I need help. If you are able, I would be honored if you could contribute by supporting the Movers Mindset project on Patreon. https://patreon.com/moversmindset …and I completely understand if that's not feasible for you. If you want to help me in another way, simply go start a conversation with someone. Even better, start a conversation with someone you don't already know. Ask questions. Practice listening. Repeat. My personal mission is creating better conversations to spread understanding and compassion. And Movers Mindset is one of the things I do in service of my mission. Stop Making These Common Shopping Mistakes!

Fashion Crimes Podcast

What's is up, Fashion Friends? I am here this week to have a tough talk about shopping. Are you shopping forward? Well, don't you dare let us catch you shopping backward, or Holly swears she will track you down and set you straight with her formula to “Stop Making These Common Fashion Mistakes!”   Recently while working with some of her OG styling clients, Holly noticed some common issues that were causing them to be either stressed out or unsure about what to wear.  The common problem? SHOPPING!  How can shopping be problematic, you ask? Isn't retail therapy a thing? Well, if you are buying crap you don't need, or stuff that doesn't fit you well or praying you will suddenly lose a shoe size in order to shove your foot in those sale shoes, that's a no from me, dog. But, not to worry! Holly is here with her Fashion Formula: Shopping Forward vs. Shopping Backward.  What is Shopping Forward? Well, the definition according to Holly is knowledge and planning.  You know what your specific body type.  You know what looks good on your good parts, and how to hide your unfavorite parts.  Your style has evolved with your age, so you know you cannot wear the things you wore 20 years ago. Or even 10 years ago.  You know you do not need snow boots in Miami. #facts You walk into a store and know exactly what you are looking for and are not distracted by all of the retail and marketing gimmicks and obstacles placed in your way, intended to derail you.   We are 100% happy for you if you've got this part of the formula down! But to be honest, most of us do not. Most are shopping backward, and it will wreak havoc on your style, your confidence and frankly, your ability to get dressed most days.   Shopping Backward is when you: Buy things on an impulse – anywhere – in line at the check-out, on line on social media, walking through the airport. This is shit you do not need. Ever. Buy things just because they are on sale. You do not need a cartload of shoes from the Nordstrom Yearly Half-Off sale, or BOGO sales at the discount stores.  Stuff that sits in your closet with the tags still on it is not fashion. It's not your style. And, if you hire a personal stylist like Holly Katz, she is just going to make you give it away when she cleans out your closet. #facts Buying sizes that do not fit you. You are not going to lose 20 pounds by Christmas. Your feet do not change size. If you buy a size up or a size down and think you will ever wear that crap, Holly is here to say: You Never Will.  You buy something because it's your favorite color. The price is right. But you have no clue if the fit is right for you. You never wear it. It sits in your closet with tags until Holly makes you get rid of it and you get mad at her. See the trend? Are you doing the math yet? Repeat after Holly:   “If you are buying something you do not need just because it's on sale, it's not a good deal.”   Remember, you are in the driver's seat with your style. Do not let trends and or fast fashion dictate what you wear. Because in the end, you will never wear it.   In other news: we have a big shopping season coming up. It's a lot of pressure to buy things for the holidays. So if you are shopping for yourself, make sure you know what you're looking for.    Holiday Shopping Sanity Tip: If you don't know what you're looking for, then get some inspo online before you shop. Go on department store websites, denim websites, shoe websites. They all tell you what's new, what's trending, what's hot. And then you can filter for your size, your style, etc.   Speaking of holidays, Hanukkah is coming up super early this year, and Holly will be doing a fabulous Hanukkah giveaway with some amazing indie designers on her social media.   We love supporting women-owned small businesses, so make sure you stay tuned for that.    Next week we're going to be talking about “How to Shop for Your Body Type.” You're welcome! We've got your back! I'm your best friend in fashion!    Please be sure to sign up for our INSIDERS ONLY newsletter here. And don't sweat it. Holly is here by your side. If you don't know what to do, reach out, send her a DM.   With love,    - The Fashion Crimes Podcast with Holly Katz, your favorite personal stylist, and let's be honest, the only Holly you need to know you know. According to the President, every American human being must become a guinea pig for one of the Big Pharma vaccine manufacturers, or suffer severe consequences. I'm certain that if he had his way, life would look a lot like it does in Australia. Maybe President Biden believes his title of Commander In Chief means that he can command every citizen to do whatever he feels like, whether it makes sense or not. Sort of like a king, which is what our Founding Fathers fought hard to prevent. At this point, there's only two reasons you could support mandatory vaccination of all Americans: Ignorance: You've chosen to ignore the facts and science surrounding COVID-19 and the vaccinesMoney: You benefit financially from the successful sale of these vaccines I almost added fear as an additional reason, but the reality is, you'd only live in fear because you're ignorant about the facts and science. Charles Spurgeon once said, A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting not its shoes.Charles Spurgeon In today's digital age, this has never been more true. The majority of today's left-wing ideological agendas are based up on one lie after another. It's as tough they're following the teachings of Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth.Joseph Goebbels For example, Joe Biden told Americans that if they got the vaccine, they wouldn't get COVID. His statement starts off the extremely popular track, Let's Go Brandon by Bryson Gray, Tyson James, and Chandler Crump. About a week later, Colin Powell passed away from complications with COVID. He was double-vaccinated. As I was working on the draft of this blog post, the Children's Health Defense broke the news that California Governor Gavin Newsom developed Guillian-Barré Syndrome following his booster shot. This is yet to be confirmed, but the public hadn't seen him in 11 days at that point. If it's true, there's no doubt that numerous doctors attempted to fix and hide his condition before the public could become aware of it. We've repeatedly been told the vaccines are safe. They're not. Adverse events are a significant issue and the public simply isn't informed. Are there scenarios where the vaccine could make sense? Perhaps. But no matter your age, you have to consider what could happen if you succumb to side effects. And adults need to get their heads out of the sand when it comes to vaccinating kids. There's no logical reason to do so, even if Big Bird says otherwise. For those who've been following "the science" throughout the COVID Circus, Newsome's GBS isn't a surprise. But I do hope that more of the ignorant, "pro-vaccine, anti-science" crowd begin asking some questions based on Newsom's condition. Here are some important points to consider as #46, Mainstream Media, and most celebrities pressure Americans to obey the Commander In Chief. Adverse events are much more common than the media or the President admit. The COVID-19 vaccines have caused more recorded adverse events than all other vaccines combined up to this point. At the time of this writing, a total of 856,919 adverse events have been reported. As a general rule of thumb, only about 1-10% people who experience adverse events report them. Do the math on that one! Almost 20,000 people have died. The most recent deaths include a 12-year-old girl from South Carolina (VAERS I.D. 1784945) who hemorrhaged 22 days after receiving Pfizer's COVID vaccine, a 13-year-old girl from Maryland (VAERS I.D. 1815096) who died 15 days after receiving her first dose of Pfizer's COVID vaccine from a heart condition and a 17-year-old female from Texas (VAERS I.D. 1815295) who experienced an acute hyperglycemic crisis 33 days after being vaccinated.Another recent death involves a 12-year-old girl (VAERS I.D. 1784945) who died from a respiratory tract hemorrhage 22 days after receiving her first dose of Pfizer's vacc...

*This episode is brought to you by MuteSix, Repeat, and CartText**   “Giving people value through ice cream” that's what Killer Creamery does. Today we have Louis Armstrong, Founder of Killer Creamery, a whole natural zero sugar ice cream company. Louis attended the University of Idaho and got a degree in food science. He acquired experience in R&D, quality assurance, and dairy operations. Initially, he wanted job security, but in his heart, he had always wanted to start a business of his own. To him, manufacturing, co-packing, general supply chain, and generating sales were challenging, but something he expected and could handle. However, the length of the funding cycle and how difficult it was, was indeed the most challenging part of the startup journey for Louis. He advises entrepreneurs to have a clear vision for their business or don't do it. In part 1, he discusses: * Gratefulness * Overview of the brand * His background * What led him to start * His “cold water in your face” movement * Advice for others * Thinking negatively when planning Join Ramon Vela and Louis Armstrong as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand. Intermittent Fasting Stories

In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin welcomes Bett Lucas back to the podcast. Bett was a guest on episode 40, and she shares how her life has changed since her last visit. Gin's new book Clean(ish) is available for preorder! Gin wants to show you how to become clean(ish) where it counts: you'll learn how to eat (mostly) clean and live (mainly) clean as you unlock your body's natural ability to self-clean. Instead of aiming for perfection (which is impossible) or changing everything at once (which is hard, and never leads to lasting change), you'll cut through the confusion, lose the fear, and embrace the freedom that comes from becoming clean(ish). As you learn how to lower your toxic load through small changes, smart swaps, and simple solutions, you'll breathe a (clean) sigh of relief and embrace your own personal evolution toward becoming clean(ish).Go to https://www.ginstephens.com/cleanish.html for more information. The book will be released on 1/4/22, but you can preorder now through Amazon or your favorite online book retailer. Preordering is really important, as it gives the publisher an idea of how many books to print. Bett lives her best life in Washington state, where she is a busy mother of six children. She also hosts a podcast, Living Your Big Bold Life. Her podcast helps listeners to 'live boldly in the areas of health, career and family."BIG NEWS! We have made some major changes in the Delay, Don't Deny membership community, including moving to a whole new platform. Our old platform had some bugs and issues with functionality which kept us from connecting as easily as we hoped, so we have moved the entire community. It's new and improved—and we are already feeling at home. If you're looking for intermittent fasting support in a cozy community that celebrates the clean fast, you can now join us by going to ginstephens.com/community. And, if you were a Delay, Don't Deny Social Network member who was under-whelmed with the experience, we promise the new community has everything we hoped for but didn't have on the old platform. You can connect directly with Gin in the Ask Gin group, and she'll answer all of your questions personally. If you're new to intermittent fasting or recommitting to the IF lifestyle, join the 28-Day FAST Start group, and both Gin and the other group members will walk virtually beside you each day of your FAST Start. After your fast start, join Gin and other community members for support in The 1st Year group. There are many more useful spaces beyond these three, and you can join as many as you like. Members of the DDD Community have access to all episodes of Intermittent Fasting Stories streaming within the community platform, ad-free! You can even download them to your device and listen off-line. That's just one reason to join. Visit ginstephens.com/community to join. An annual membership is $59.95. If you aren't ready to fully commit for a year, join for $9.99 a month and you can cancel at any time. If you know you'll want to stay forever, we also have a lifetime membership option available. IF is free. You don't need to join our community to fast. But if you're looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community. NOTE: If you were an annual member of the DDD Social Network who joined between March and September of 2021, please go to https://dddsocialnetwork.com/news/96401, log in, and read about how you can make the transition to the new platform at no additional charge.
