Awakening Your Inner Giant: My Personal Take on Tony Robbins' Actionable Steps Hey there, Self Aware leaders! I recently revisited Tony Robbins' masterpiece, "Awaken the Giant Within." It's a treasure trove of practical wisdom for personal transformation. Today, I want to share my personal perspective on some of the key actionable steps that have resonated with me. 1. Raising My Standards It all starts with a decision. A decision to refuse mediocrity. To stop tolerating anything less than the best version of myself. I've started setting higher standards for myself in every area of life. It's not about being perfect, it's about striving for excellence. It's about pushing my boundaries and refusing to settle. 2. Changing My Limiting Beliefs We all carry beliefs that hold us back. For me, it was the nagging voice saying "I'm not good enough" or "Success isn't for me." I'm actively working on replacing those limiting beliefs with empowering ones. Every day, I remind myself that I'm capable of achieving anything I set my mind to. 3. The Power of Decision Decisions shape our destiny. I'm learning to make more empowering decisions, even small ones, every day. It's about being decisive, taking action, and learning from the outcomes. 4. Mastering My Emotions Emotions can be powerful, but we don't have to be their slaves. I'm practicing taking control of my emotional state. Whether it's through changing my physiology, focusing on positive thoughts, or using empowering language, I'm learning to cultivate a positive, resourceful state. 5. Taking Massive Action It's not enough to just have a plan. It's about taking immediate, massive action towards our goals. I'm breaking down my big goals into smaller steps and taking action every single day. It's about progress, not perfection. 6. Focusing on Results, Not Activities Busyness doesn't always equal productivity. I'm learning to focus on the results I want to achieve. Every day, I ask myself: "What's the most important thing I can do today to move closer to my goal?" 7. Pain and Pleasure This one is powerful. I'm associating massive pain with the idea of staying stuck and massive pleasure with taking action towards my goals. It's a simple but effective way to push through resistance. 8. Modeling Success There's so much we can learn from those who have already achieved what we want. I'm actively seeking out mentors and role models. It's about studying their strategies, mindset, and actions. 9. Setting Clear, Compelling Goals Goals need to be more than just wishes. I'm setting SMART goals and visualizing the outcomes with emotional intensity. It's about creating a clear picture of where I want to go. 10. Practicing Gratitude Gratitude is a game-changer. I'm making it a daily practice to focus on what I'm grateful for. It shifts my focus from lack to abundance and puts me in a more resourceful state. 11. Neuro-Associative Conditioning (NAC) This is about rewiring our minds to associate pleasure with positive behaviors and pain with negative ones. I'm identifying triggers for my bad habits and creating new, positive responses. 12. Changing My Environment Our environment shapes us. I'm surrounding myself with positive, supportive people and creating a physical environment that supports my goals. 13. Committing to Lifelong Learning Growth is a lifelong journey. I'm committed to continually educating myself and expanding my knowledge. My Journey Continues These are just a few of the steps I'm taking on my journey of personal transformation. It's an ongoing process, but I'm already seeing positive changes in my life and leadership. Remember, Self Aware leaders, we have the power to awaken our inner giant. It's about taking action, pushing our boundaries, and constantly striving for growth. Let's continue this journey together!
“I think people can't give their own personal agency away. I talk to a lot of veterans that kind of throw up their hands, ‘Oh, the VA isn't giving me the help that I need.' Well, hey, man, take responsibility for your own life. You've got to figure this sh-t out. And we're here to help you.” –Scottie Schneider Scottie Schneider is a military veteran, West Point graduate, and the founder of Waking Warrior, a community and support system for military veterans who are experiencing anxiety, depression, PTSD, substance abuse issues, and thoughts of suicide. Based in Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia, Scottie is adept at using traditional plant medicine, including hallucinogens, as part of the psychological healing process. A West Point graduate with a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering and Russian language, Scottie served as an Army officer from 2005 to 2012, where he was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. Following his military service, Scottie embarked on a successful career in sales for a number of technology companies, where he mentored teams and developed an expertise in strategic relationships, key account management, sales operations, and revenue generation. Despite his business success, he also dealt with severe depression, substance abuse issues, and thoughts of suicide, which put him on a path of personal and spiritual exploration and, ultimately, healing. In this episode, we discuss: Scottie's journey from West Point graduate to salesperson and his struggles with depression and alcoholism after leaving the military. The role of plant medicines and psychedelics in Scottie's personal healing process. The founding of Waking Warrior, an online community and support system for military veterans dealing with mental health challenges and substance abuse. The importance of authenticity and vulnerability in leadership, especially for men and veterans transitioning to civilian life. Scottie's approach to personal development, including the concept of "skill stacking" and focusing on building systems rather than just goals. The challenges of identity restructuring for veterans after leaving the military, and how Waking Warrior aims to address this. Alternative healing methods, from breathwork to meditation and beyond, and how experimenting with different modalities can help veterans coping with PTSD and other mental health issues find the right tools to live a healthy and fulfilling life. Scottie Schneider's journey from West Point graduate to founder of Waking Warrior, a community and support system for veterans, is a testament to the power of personal and spiritual transformation and the importance of addressing mental health in the veteran community. After serving as an Army officer in Fairbanks, Alaska, Scottie faced his own battles with depression and alcoholism upon leaving the military. His struggle led him to explore alternative healing methods, including plant medicines and psychedelics, which played a crucial role in his personal recovery. Drawing from his experiences and leveraging his diverse skill set – which spans from environmental engineering to sales and technology – Scottie founded Waking Warrior. This online community and support system aims to help military veterans grappling with anxiety, depression, PTSD, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts. Scottie's approach emphasizes the importance of authenticity, vulnerability, and personal growth. Waking Warrior encourages veterans to explore various healing modalities, from breathwork to meditation and other systems, recognizing that each individual's path to recovery is unique. By addressing the challenges of identity restructuring and promoting "skill stacking," Scottie and Waking Warrior are working to provide veterans with the tools they need to thrive in civilian life and rediscover their sense of purpose. In this episode, I share my coaching journey including the experiences, books, trainings, and key moments that have helped learn to serve my clients powerfully one on one and in group settings. Reach out: www.brianrussellphd.com and brian@brianrussellphd.com Here are the many resources mentioned: Books that Shaped Me: Every book has the potential to teach you something about coaching. Refuse to read simply as a means for gathering mere information. The key is to apply insights and lessons from your reading into actual tactics/action steps and questions. Learn to read books as a means to helping yourself and others experience transformation. I've read hundreds of books over the last 13 years that have helped me to develop into the person and coach that I am today. The following books are the curated few that I personally recommend because they authentically helped me to grow personally and taught me ideas and practices that I've integrated into my own style of coaching and into the programs that I presently offer. This is an interview with Glenn S. Cohen, the author of Neurological Intelligence: Volumes 1 and 2. Join us on a wild ride through Glenn's neurological life, as he shares various tools and techniques that have helped him and can help you too. We all have wounds from our past, inner children trapped in time, and destructive habits and thought patterns that we'd like to replace. The tools we focus on in this episode fall primarily under the category of: visualizations & meditations that engage our various senses. By deliberately and strategically tapping into our memories of sensory data (e.g. sight, sound, and touch), using metaphors and movie-like sequences, spicing it up with humor and goofiness, and repeating and repeating, we can find and fix various patterns in our body and brain. This can revolutionize our relationships both in our inner and outer worlds. We can learn to be less reactive, more calm, and more neurologically free. We also talk about body-based tools such as breath and movement (e.g. shaking), as well as combining them with visualization exercises (e.g. the 4-7-8 "John Coffey exercise") and with our love partner (e.g. the "mindful discussion technique"). We also discuss psychedelics (such as Ayahuasca), alcohol, IFS, NLP, attachment theory, brain waves, journaling, and comedy.Still, we will never be perfect. And this hero's journey deep into the nervous system can be dark, scary, and uncomfortable. It also requires you to temporarily let go of logic, rationality, predictability and let the wild unconscious mind roam free. That's how you will find your paths toward truth, freedom, and health. *CONNECT W/ GLENN S. But no book strikes me more than Verghese Kurien's autobiography, I Too Had a Dream. Kurien's story is of a genuine Indian folk hero. Sam Walton : Made In America“ I couldn't help but get inspired by Sam Walton, the iconic founder of the chain. I have learned some of the most enduring lessons of business from a heavily underlined and dog-eared copy of the classic Made in America.”“A book I would like to recommend to everyone is Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It provides a step-by-step framework for living and working, based on some fundamental principles or natural laws.”“Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist and Richard Bach's Jonathan Livingstone Seagull have inspired many of us within the organisation and helped us achieve what others thought impossible”“Another equally motivating book is Anthony Robbins' Awaken the Giant Within. It explores how every human being can live up to their true potential."Further recommended readings:“Among my favourites is Howard Schultz's Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time. MINDSET: Positive Self Talk The power of positive self-talk is a tool that can help you achieve anything you set your mind to. Whether it's in sports, business, or any other aspect of life, having a positive outlook on yourself and your abilities can make all the difference. So, what exactly is positive self-talk? It's the practice of consciously choosing to use positive language and affirmations to improve your self-esteem, confidence, and overall mindset. This means taking control of the inner voice that we all have and choosing to make it work for us rather than against us. Positive self-talk has been shown to have a significant impact on both the brain and the body. When we use positive words to reprogram the way we think about ourselves and our abilities, we activate various regions of the brain that are associated with positive emotions and motivation. One of the key ways in which positive self-talk affects the brain is through the release of chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals are responsible for feelings of happiness and well-being and are triggered when we engage in positive self-talk. As a result, we feel more motivated and energized to take on new challenges and achieve our goals. Positive self-talk can also help to reprogram the neural pathways in the brain. When we consistently use positive affirmations and self-talk, we create new neural connections that reinforce positive beliefs and attitudes. This can lead to a more optimistic and confident outlook on life, which can translate into greater success in all areas. In addition to the brain, positive self-talk can also have a significant impact on the body. When we engage in positive self-talk, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to reduce stress levels and promote relaxation. This can have a range of physical benefits, including lower blood pressure, improved digestion, and better sleep. Moreover, positive self-talk can also boost the immune system. Studies have shown that people who engage in positive self-talk have stronger immune responses, which can help to protect against illness and disease. Overall, the benefits of positive self-talk are numerous and well-documented. By using positive words to reprogram the way we think about ourselves and our abilities, we can create a more positive and confident outlook on life, which can lead to greater success and happiness in all areas. Successful athletes like Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, and Serena Williams are well-known for their use of positive self-talk. Michael Jordan, for example, would often tell himself that he was the best basketball player in the world. This positive self-talk helped him to stay motivated and focused, even when facing difficult opponents. Similarly, Muhammad Ali famously proclaimed, "I am the greatest," long before he actually became the heavyweight champion of the world. His positive self-talk helped him to maintain a winning mindset, even when facing adversity. Serena Williams is another great example of the power of positive self-talk. In a 2015 interview with Oprah Winfrey, she said, “I love who I am, and I encourage other people to love and embrace who they are. But it definitely starts with me first.” In business, successful people like Oprah Winfrey, Tony Robbins, and Richard Branson have also used positive self-talk to achieve their goals. Oprah Winfrey, for example, has said that she uses positive affirmations every day to remind herself of her worth and her ability to succeed. Tony Robbins, the world-renowned motivational speaker, is a big advocate of positive self-talk. He believes that the language we use can have a huge impact on our success. In his book, “Awaken the Giant Within,” he writes, “The words you speak become the house you live in.” Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, is another believer in positive self-talk. In an interview with Forbes, he said, “If you can train yourself to be positive about every situation, you'll be a happier person, and more successful in the long run.” So, how can you start incorporating positive self-talk into your daily routine? Here are a few tips to get you started: 1. Be aware of your inner voice - The first step is to become aware of the language you use when talking to yourself. Are you using negative language that puts yourself down, or positive language that lifts you up? Here are some examples of negative self-talk that people may not be aware of: "I'm not good enough" - This is a common thought that many people have, especially when faced with a challenge or obstacle. However, it's important to recognize that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and just because you may struggle with something doesn't mean you're not good enough overall. "I always mess up" - This type of self-talk can be particularly damaging because it reinforces a negative belief about oneself. It's important to recognize that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process and doesn't define your worth or abilities. "I'll never be able to do that" - This type of self-talk is often associated with a lack of confidence and can limit one's ability to take risks and try new things. It's important to challenge these negative beliefs and recognize that with practice and effort, anything is possible. "I don't deserve to be happy" - This type of self-talk can be particularly damaging to one's mental health and well-being. It's important to recognize that everyone deserves to be happy and fulfilled in life, and to work towards creating a positive and fulfilling future. "I'm a failure" - This type of self-talk can be particularly damaging to one's self-esteem and confidence. It's important to recognize that failure is a natural part of the learning process and doesn't define your worth or abilities. Instead of focusing on the negative, it's important to learn from mistakes and move forward with a positive outlook. Overall, becoming aware of negative self-talk is an important first step in developing a more positive mindset. By challenging negative beliefs and replacing them with positive affirmations, we can create a more positive and fulfilling life. 2. Choose positive affirmations - Once you've become aware of your inner voice, start to choose positive affirmations that you can repeat to yourself throughout the day. These could be as simple as “I am capable” or “I am worthy.” When we choose positive affirmations and repeat them to ourselves throughout the day, it can have a powerful impact on both the body and brain. Continuous use of positive affirmations can help to reprogram the way we think about ourselves and our abilities, which can lead to greater confidence, motivation, and overall well-being. From a neurological perspective, positive affirmations can help to create new neural pathways in the brain. By consistently repeating positive statements, we can create new neural connections that reinforce positive beliefs and attitudes. This can lead to a more optimistic and confident outlook on life, which can translate into greater success in all areas. Moreover, positive affirmations can also have a significant impact on the body. When we engage in positive self-talk, we activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to reduce stress levels and promote relaxation. This can have a range of physical benefits, including lower blood pressure, improved digestion, and better sleep. Furthermore, positive affirmations can help to increase the production of feel-good chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals are responsible for feelings of happiness and well-being and are triggered when we engage in positive self-talk. As a result, we feel more motivated and energized to take on new challenges and achieve our goals. Overall, the continuous use of positive affirmations can have a profound impact on both the body and brain. By consistently reinforcing positive beliefs and attitudes, we can create a more positive and fulfilling life. 3. Repeat your affirmations daily - Make it a habit to repeat your affirmations daily, whether it's in the morning, before bed, or throughout the day. 4. Believe in yourself - The key to making positive self-talk work is to truly believe in yourself and your abilities. This takes time and practice, but with consistency, you'll start to see the benefits. In conclusion, the power of positive self-talk is a tool that can help you achieve your goals and live a happier, more fulfilling life. By becoming aware of your inner voice and choosing positive affirmations, you can start to shift your mindset and achieve success in whatever area of life you choose. So, start practicing positive self-talk today and see where it takes you!
