Arizona students are losing foundational literacy, is it due to technology? 

Interview with Diane Kendig. Diane Kendig is a writer and teacher born and raised in Canton, Ohio, where she currently resides again after decades living and working elsewhere. Kendig's four poetry chapbooks include the most recent Prison Terms (Main Street Rag, 2018), as well as The Places We Find Ourselves (Finishing Line 2009), Diane Kendig's Greatest Hits (Pudding House, 2001), and A Tunnel of Flute Song (Cleveland State University 1980). She also co-edited the tribute anthology In the Company of Russell Atkins (Red Giant 2016) and published with photographer Steve Cagan a collection of her translations from Nicaraguan poets, And a Pencil to Write Your Name (Bottom Dog 1986). Her poems and essays have appeared in many anthologies, such as Letters to the World (Red Hen), Colors of a Different Horse (NCTE), Ariadne's Thread: Contemporary Women's Journals (Harper and Row), and in over 100 journals, including J Journal, The Minnesota Review, Under the Sun, Ekphrasis, and English Journal. The recipient of two Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards in Poetry, Kendig has also received awards from the Fulbright Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and she has held artist residencies at Yaddo and at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Her book Prison Terms was a finalist for the Cathy Smith Bowers Contest. She won a Sears Foundation Award for teaching and the Outstanding Educator award at The University of Findlay, where she was a professor for two decades. In addition to her writing and literature classes on campus, she regularly taught in the university's prison program in medium security. She also has taught at Cleveland State University, Kent State Stark, Cuyahoga Community College (all in Ohio), and Bentley University (in MA), and in the Ohio Arts Council “Artist in Residency” program, in addition to teaching high school Spanish and English in her first years as an educator. Currently Kendig is working on two poetry collections: a bilingual collection of poems, Woman with a Fan, about the Spanish artist Maria Blanchard, and a book of poems, Stays. She curates creative writing sites for libraries, including Read + Write: 30 Days of Poetry for National Poetry Month, and she continues to give readings and to lead creative writing workshops. Tate Ratledge is growing into his second season at guard. Christian Mahogany being healthy matters if he grabs the left guard job, and that competition is real. A better line makes Goff better, and he was already good enough last year despite an OC who worked against the flow. Goff's mobility will never be a feature, and his big-game record has mixed chapters. He also played very well in a Super Bowl loss. In the current NFL, the Detroit Lions can win with him when the front five sets the tone. He is low on the list of things keeping this team from a Lombardi. Schedule Drop and a Munich Showdown The NFL schedule release lands tonight. Travel planners care. So do fans circling one date in bold. On November 15 in Munich, the Lions will host the New England Patriots, the reigning AFC champs, per the league's decree. That is a marquee lift for an international stage where the Patriots brand still looms from the Brady and Belichick era. There is noise around New England. Mike Vrabel and Diana Russini headlines. Wide receiver questions. AJ Brown trade talk. An offensive line that looked bad and did not get the help some expected. The Patriots move from a last play schedule to a first play schedule. This week, Hackaday's Elliot Williams and Kristina Panos met up over the international tubes to bring you the latest news, mystery sound results show, and of course, a big bunch of hacks from the previous seven days or so. Regarding Hackaday Europe, we announced the last round of speakers and opened up the workshop ticket sales. In other news, the Green-Powered Challenge has wrapped, and judging will begin quite soon. On What's That Sound, we can score another one for Kristina, which brings her record to approximately four wins and sixty-eight losses. She knew without a doubt that this was a guillotine paper cutter, probably because she recorded the sound herself. Hey, don't take this away from her. After that, it's on to the hacks, beginning with a really cool laser-powered mist-and-mirrors multi-view display, a robotic drawing assistant of questionable utility, and a new slicer that enables horizontal overhangs without supports. We also look at a trackball 3D controller, a 3D-printed pinball machine, and a good way to kill humidity sensors with humidity. Finally, we're both shocked to learn that we've been on GPS mk. II for some time now. But then once we get over that, we talk tablets and their usefulness, or lack thereof.
