Symptoms including hives, abdominal pain, and potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis, typically occur three to eight hours after eating meat, making the connection easy to miss. The Diagnosis ProblemAs of 2022, 42% of U.S. healthcare practitioners had never heard of alpha-gal syndrome, meaning patients often suffer for years without answers. What You Can DoManagement focuses on avoiding mammalian meat and products containing alpha-gal, preventing future tick bites, and referral to an allergist for severe reactions. The good news: the syndrome tends to wane over time with strict avoidance. Itchy & Bitchy is the podcast for anyone who has ever felt dismissed, misdiagnosed, or gaslit by a broken medical system. What if one of the biggest beliefs in fitness is completely wrong? For decades, athletes, coaches, and gym-goers have been told that building serious muscle requires meat, animal protein, and mountains of chicken breasts. But today's guest has spent nearly 30 years challenging that belief—and backing it up with results. In this episode of Crackin' Backs, we sit down with IFBB Pro Bodybuilder, fitness coach, and lifelong vegan Torre Washington for a conversation that goes far beyond nutrition. This isn't a vegan sales pitch. This is an honest discussion about muscle growth, protein quality, performance, recovery, longevity, discipline, and whether vegan bodybuilding is truly optimal—or simply possible for the right person. We tackle the questions everyone is asking:• Can you build elite muscle without eating meat?• Is plant protein enough for maximum hypertrophy?• Are vegan athletes at a disadvantage?• Who thrives on a vegan diet—and who may struggle?• What does the science really say about protein, leucine, and bioavailability?• Is success driven by diet, or by relentless discipline?Whether you're a bodybuilder, athlete, healthcare professional, weekend warrior, or simply curious about human performance, this conversation will challenge assumptions and force you to rethink what fuels strength.About Torre WashingtonTorre Washington is one of the most recognized vegan bodybuilders in the world. Ticks are having a banner year across much of North America, and that has outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, campers, and RVers paying close attention. Most people know about Lyme disease. But far fewer have heard of Alpha-Gal Syndrome, a tick-borne condition that can suddenly make you allergic to red meat and trigger severe, even life-threatening allergic reactions. In this episode of the RV Podcast, we revisit one of the most important health interviews we've ever done.RVer Fred Church shares the remarkable story of how a single tick bite changed his life forever. What started as what seemed like food poisoning after eating a hamburger soon turned into a frightening medical mystery involving swelling, vomiting, intense itching, and a diagnosis that left him unable to eat many of the foods he had enjoyed his entire life.Fred explains how Alpha-Gal Syndrome develops, the symptoms he experienced, how he was diagnosed, and the precautions he and his wife Kathy now take whenever they head outdoors. The timing of this conversation couldn't be better. Earlier this summer, Mike had a tick embedded in his face that required a dermatologist to make an incision and use two stitches to remove it. The doctor told him he had already removed dozens of ticks from patients this season.Whether you're exploring hiking trails, walking the dog around the campground, sitting around a campfire, or simply enjoying the outdoors, this episode is a powerful reminder that tick prevention is more important than ever.If you think the only tick-borne illness you need to worry about is Lyme disease, this conversation may change your mind.In this episode:• Fred Church's personal Alpha-Gal Syndrome story• The symptoms that led to his diagnosis• How a tick bite can trigger a red meat allergy• What RVers and outdoor travelers need to know• Practical tick prevention strategies• Why tick-borne illnesses are becoming a growing concernThis is one of those episodes that could make a real difference for you, your family, and your travels. Also in this episode, answers to your questions about:Whether a Combo or a separate washer and dryer is best for an RVandHow to best learn how to drive an RVGet the RV Lifestyle Newsletter at https://rvlifestyle.com/newsletter

Most people hear "buy the best meat you can afford" and immediately picture the $30 pasture-raised ribeye at Whole Foods — and then conclude that eating well is simply out of reach. But that's not a fair test of what quality meat actually costs. Ribeye is the most expensive cut at the highest tier, and comparing it to cheap conventional ground beef is like comparing a BMW to a used Corolla and deciding all cars are unaffordable. The more useful question is what "good enough" looks like across different categories of meat, because the answer isn't the same for beef as it is for pork or poultry. In this episode, I lay out a tiered framework you can use when buying meat, explain why I draw a hard line at industrial pork and poultry (even though I'm more forgiving about conventional beef), and share my honest reaction to a specific product launch that put the whole question in sharp relief. On the beef side, the tiers are fairly forgiving. Grass-fed, grass-finished ground beef from a local regenerative farm often runs around $10 a pound — and you can find it cheaper than that at Aldi or Walmart. That's not far from conventional at all, and it's where most families actually spend their beef budget anyway. The $30 ribeye is real, but it's also not the only option in the category. Pork and poultry are a harder conversation. Roughly 93% of US pigs are raised in factory farms where pregnant sows spend most of their adult lives in gestation crates too narrow to turn around in, standing on concrete under artificial light. Beyond the animal welfare problem, pigs and chickens are monogastric animals — unlike cattle, they don't have the ruminant digestive system that buffers against poor feed inputs. Whatever is in their feed shows up directly in the meat and fat, including pesticide residues, soy isoflavones, and rendered animal byproducts that are still legally used in US monogastric feed. That's a problem conventional beef simply doesn't have to the same degree. Carnivore Bar recently reached out to introduce me to a new lower-cost version of their product called the Everyday Bar, priced at around $5 versus their original $16 bar. The catch is that it uses grain-finished beef. My gut reaction was to say "no," but after sitting with it for a few days, I settled on a more pragmatic: if the choice is between this and a conventional protein bar packed with lab-derived ingredients, the Everyday Bar wins. Grain-finished beef is still significantly better than industrial pork, industrial poultry, or anything plant-based. But if you can afford the original, that's the one I'd buy. Thank you to this episode's sponsor, Carnivore Bar! Carnivore Bar makes some of the highest quality meat bars I've ever had — grass-fed, grass-finished beef, tallow, and salt. No fillers, no seed oils, no nonsense. I've been eating them for a while now, and the Apple Pie flavor is still my go-to when I need something portable and actually satiating. If you're looking for a real food snack that travels well and doesn't compromise on ingredients, I encourage you to give Carnivore Bar a try. Robbie is joined by South African outfitter and Helix Program member Ruan of Inkulu Adventures to discuss his 21 years in the hunting industry and the meaning behind building his own safari operation from the conservation standpoint, to the community impact, and beyond. Ruan breaks down the significant costs involved in managing rhinos (security, insurance, fencing, feed, and anti-poaching measures) and explains why regulated rhino hunting provides critical revenue that incentivizes private landowners to maintain and protect rhino populations. In Episode 242 of The Black Lincoln Collective Comedy Podcast, Fred is back, alive to the show again, and immediately welcomed with the kind of dignity this program is famous for: a discussion about synthetic farts, AI-generated gas, and the need for “real farts” in modern podcasting. It is, somehow, a return to normal. The crew kicks things off by welcoming a new listener, Dale from Canada, before revisiting the emotional damage caused by Fred missing the previous episode. Parker and Allan remind him that, in his absence, they were forced to slap together a show without him and do all the things he would normally veto. Fred, naturally, did not listen. Friendship is beautiful. From there, Fred launches into the main story: his family vacation to Hilton Head Island. Before the trip even begins, he manages to back into an elderly woman's car while trying to buy a shirt for a funeral, which is pretty much the perfect tone-setter for any relaxing getaway. Once the family arrives at the Hilton Head resort, things do not get much smoother. The resort is described as a confusing four-building maze with offset rectangles, broken elevators, long walks, inconvenient room layouts, and a setup that seems specifically designed to punish anyone traveling with kids, luggage, or a working sense of direction. The group has to reshuffle rooms after discovering one unit is spacious enough for the whole family while the other is basically vacation Tetris. Then there is the long walk to the beach, a convenient bar at the end of the boardwalk, and Fred's encounter with the “hurricane challenge,” which escalates exactly as irresponsibly as expected. The vacation continues with glitter ice, the fear of shiny poop, expensive golf, rain, Hilton Head golf course prices, and one terrifying stinger of a golf shot that may or may not have launched across the island's main road. Nobody was arrested, so technically the vacation was a success. It is a classic BLC episode: weird, loud, sarcastic, and mostly a warning label. #blcpodcast #podcastingforthepeople #funny #podcast #greenvillesc #scpodcast #yeahthatgreenville Listen at: https://americasfavoritepodcast.com Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/blcpodcast/ Check us out on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blcpodcast/ Buy Fred and Allan Beer: https://www.patreon.com/blcworld

Industrial agriculture accounts for a significant share of global emissions, but meat alternatives face real hurdles in becoming a mainstay of consumer diets. The hype around plant-based meat has cooled: hurt by price gaps, ultra-processed rhetoric, and culture-war politics around masculinity and food identity. Yet feeding a growing planet will require eating less beef, wasting less food, and producing more food with less land. Cultivated meat – made from animal cells and grown in a lab – could offer a different path forward, especially in hybrid form combining plant and cultivated proteins. What might the future of meat look like? Cole Mannix is a multi-generational rancher from central and western Montana who serves as the founder of Old Salt, a vertically integrated startup enterprise. Coming from a background rooted in mountain grazing and extensive holistic management, Cole spent decades working alongside his family and regional producers to optimize ecological function, riparian health, and predator coexistence on their expansive home landscapes. Recognizing the vulnerabilities ranching families face as processing and retail channels become increasingly consolidated, Cole launched Old Salt to construct an alternative ecosystem of localized market power. Under his leadership, Old Salt has grown to incorporate a membership of ranches operating alongside processing hubs, a direct e-commerce engine, local restaurants, and an annual community festival hosted directly on his family's ranch. Cole is dedicated to creating experiential, relational marketplaces that adequately reward producers, support active workforce ownership, and increase the sheer volume of passionate hearts and hands managing the landscape. In this episode, John and Cole discuss: How Cole engineered an LLC model with cooperative principles to access external capital without risking members' family lands. Constructing a vertically integrated market to disrupt highly consolidated, downstream corporate meat packing and processing monopolies. Establishing regional slaughter facilities and custom restaurants to stabilize profit margins and balance animal carcasses locally. Rerouting financial value directly back upstream to give independent ranchers viable financial alternatives to commodity supply chains. Why integrating livestock back into modern cropping systems is restricted by structural barriers like missing fences and scarce water infrastructure. Creating parallel government incentive programs focused on funding active farm labor rather than subsidizing crop insurance yields. In this episode of Church History Matters, we trace the fascinating and sometimes surprising history of the Word of Wisdom throughout the 1900s. How did a revelation originally framed as “not by commandment or constraint” become one of the defining markers of Latter-day Saint identity? Along the way, we explore the influence of Elder John A. Widtsoe and Leah Widtsoe's influential book The Word of Wisdom, the leadership of President David O. McKay, and the growing cultural debates surrounding caffeine, chocolate, meat consumption, and other “gray areas” that shaped Mormon life in the twentieth century. We'll examine how Saints and leaders wrestled with questions the revelation itself does not explicitly answer: Is caffeine against the Word of Wisdom? What about cola drinks? Why did some members avoid chocolate or hot soup while others focused only on coffee, tea, alcohol, and tobacco? And how did cultural traditions, personal opinions, and local teachings sometimes become confused with doctrine?
