This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John is joined by Keith Hammer of Stratton Seed Company to talk about their wide variety of food plot blends and how to create successful food plots even in dry conditions. One of the things that drew John to Stratton Seed Company years ago, was that most of their seeds are grown and produced locally here in the south around Stuttgart, Arkansas. Their target customers range along the southeastern United States from Oklahoma and Texas across to Georgia and Alabama. The seeds and mixes they produce are designed for the soils and climates of the south, and not the typical midwestern whitetail hunters that so many products cater to. Keith and John go through the lengthy product line that Stratton offers, but also dig a little deeper into specific food plot strategy. They talk about when folks in the south should plant as opposed to what most people in the midwest suggest, and Keith gives some tips for people trying to grow food plots in these drier than usual conditions Oklahoma and surrounding states have been experiencing. John also lets Keith talk about a subject that he has essentially no experience with due to his abundance of wild hogs, which is growing corn for deer. Over all, this is a great educational episode that you won't want to miss! Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content! Learn more about your ad choices. Ready or not the high-priced food plots are coming. The price of herbicide, fertilizer, freight, and seed is here. Food plot planting during 2022 is going to look different and expensive, so necessary precautions should be taken. Prior planning is essential so you don't break the bank. We cover four main ways to not fall victim to paying the high price for inputs this year. First, we discuss the ways to cut herbicide usage. Secondly, we explain the role that perennial plots like the Revival blend from Stratton Seed is an eleven-month crop for many portions of the country. It also does not need to be planted annually, this crop should last 6-7 years. The third option is to consider allowing some food plots to go fallow for a year. Lastly, we discuss how producing food for wildlife doesn't have to be in the form of food plots. Native vegetation should play an even larger role moving forward on your recreational property. Please share this message with other landowners so they can plan food plots properly for 2022 and beyond.
This week we welcome Heath North from Stratton Seed and BioLogic’s own Austin Delano to talk about the BioLogic Game Changer forage soybeans. Heath & Austin help explain the benefits of planting soybeans for whitetails including why forage beans are different from row crop beans, when to spray (glyphosate tolerant) beans, using M.E.E.N Green to boost growth, when to plant, how to plant, and how they help the health of your deer herd. There is a lot to learn about planting beans in your spring/summer food plots and this episode will help answer many questions. Good luck with your spring food plots. Enjoy! Over the course of several years we have worked closely with Stratton Seed Company to develop many different blends for food plotters across the country. Without fail, we always get the question, what food plot blend should I plant? This broad question leads to many other questions. So this podcast addresses the benefits of each fall annual blend that Stratton Seed company offers. In addition, Keith Hammer of Stratton Seed Company joins us on the line to do the fall food plot blend breakdown. Two of the top food plot contenders each and every fall is between the Legacy Blend and the Bounty Hunter Blend. Although composed of similar species, these two blends complete different objectives for the food plotter looking into the future. The Legacy Blend is dynamic and offers benefits from fall through the winter and well into early summer with a diverse blend including three different annual clovers. In comparison the Bounty Hunter provides great forage from fall through spring, but times out earlier than the Legacy Blend. These differences maybe the most important when it comes to deciding which one to plant. Find out which one is best for you.Don't forget about the clover options as well, both annual and perennial with the Emerge and Revival blends. Both are dynamic but accomplish different tasks in the food plot. The Revival blend is likely our favorite blend from the benefits it provides over the course of an entire year. It is important to remember that it is a perennial so this benefit comes year after year! We hope you enjoy this week's podcast and give Stratton Seed a try this fall. It's that time again when the food plot planting questions start all over. Food plot planting is just around the corner and we are ready for it, are you? This week, we discuss the common food plot questions we receive as well as the most popular misunderstandings when it comes to planting food plot varieties. It seems as if people only want to plant a monoculture of soybeans for food during the summer and winter, however often times, that cannot occur due to over browsing, but year after year they repeat this same technique. In addition, we often see people from different regions trying to adopt techniques from regions to the north and make it apply to southern zones. This thought process is flawed and we discuss why and what the remedy is to this problem. If you live in the south, don't try to make it the north by the way you plant your food plots.Be sure to take time to understand the forages you are planting. Make sure they make sense for your area, climate, and region! Checkout the different food plot blends on the store offered by Stratton Seed. Enjoy.Learn.Share! Land & Legacy is Powered by Simplecast

Seed is going in the ground as we speak! How can it be time to plant fall food plots already across much of the country. So this week in the spirit of fall food plot season, we sit down with Stratton Seed Company to review the fall lineup. Guess what...we talk about diverse fall blends because they provide the most attraction and tonnage! Keith Hammer of Stratton Seed jumps on the call and we break down the many blends offered by Stratton Seed. Many of these blends you may have heard us discuss, but with additional years of experience planting these blends, we have learned more about how incredibly beneficial each one is. The food plot world is swamped with gimics and advertising to improve antlers and huntabiltity rather than looking at food plot species individually and the benefit of them blended and achieving more collectively. Don't underestimate the value of blends and your time and energy, make the plants work for you, the wildlife, and soil! Food plots are no longer just areas to congregate deer, they are educational plots where we learn how diverse nature is, where we can positively impact soil health, reduce erosion, and feed various forms of wildlife. Enjoy.Learn.Share! #ForLoveoftheLand

Everyone is always looking for the next big thing, especially when it comes the additional edge to pull critters into range. There are so many different strategies to make that happen, but some times using the old tricks in new ways will accomplish the same. In this podcast, we sit down with Heath and Keith of Stratton Seed to discuss the additions to the product line in 2019. One of the coolest additions would have to be the Bonifide Blend! This blend is the perfect ratio of corn and soybeans. The corn is a dwarf wildlife corn variety that is round-up ready and produces an ear that sits just one and a half feet off the ground, making it more widely used for a variety of species. In addition, the soybeans are a forage type bean that is also round-up ready. The 6:1 ratio of soybeans to corn is ideal for growing tons of attractive forage from May through January in the same acreage! To biggie back the original Wild Gamechanger soybean, Stratton has just released the Wild Gamechanger 2.0! This soybean is a group 6 soybean, therefore it has a longer maturity rate than the original bean. This can be advantageous for the land manager who wants to have a soybean that holds there leaves longer into the opening of bow season. This attractive addition to the lineup will be able to feed and attract whitetails for longer periods! Different maturity rates on beans have their place on the landscape! If you want to order any of the new products, be sure to check them out on our website at www.landandlegacy.tv! Enjoy. Learn. Share! #ForLoveoftheLand

Even after years of continued development, tweaking, and perfecting food plots, we still force ourselves to learn and grow through each growing season. If we continue to learn, we can perfect our methods and increase the chances of growing successful food plots each year. This week, we take a look back over the food plot season to openly discuss failures and successes. We recap the lessons learned regarding the Heritage Blend. What were its strengths and weaknesses? Knowing this will allow us to better understand it as a tool and better use it the future. In addition, we also highlight the Wild Gamechanger Soybeans from Stratton Seed. This forage type variety soybean is as tough as they come. We experienced this summer, dry spells, browse pressure, and still tons of high-quality forage consumed. It doesn't end there, at this time of the year these browsed beans are full of pods, which will provide incredible food during the hunting season. To say the least, we were very impressed. Evaluating the success of the blends is important, but understanding the ways we can produce the desired results is just as critical. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of no-till drilling as well as broadcasting to establish fall food plots. With weather like we have experienced this fall, broadcasting seed has been fantastic, however, there is a catch! Be sure to download this week's podcast on everything food plots in 2018 to learn all that it taught us! Enjoy.Learn.Share! #ForLoveoftheLand

Food plots are without a doubt are a huge avenue for success during hunting season. In many regions of the country, most hunting efforts are focused around areas planted for wildlife. Food plots should be integrated into any hunter or land managers plan, but deciding where, how, what to plant then becomes the question. During this week's podcast, we discuss with Stratton Seed Company their involvement and introduction into the food plot world. The companies history and large distribution in the agriculture world will allow them to make a big splash into the food plot market. Stratton Seed Company will be working with us to develop specific seed blends for spring and fall mixes. Their current glyphosate-resistant soybean hits right in the middle of the soybean spectrum. These soybeans have traits that make them browse tolerant without sacrificing pod production. You get the best of both worlds! Enjoy. Learn. Share! #ForLoveoftheLand For more information regarding the soybeans, seed blends, or becoming a dealer, email hnorth@strattonseed.com
