In this Game Changers episode, I address one of the most stressful moments for play therapists: children who dart out of the playroom. I explain why "runners" are not a failure of the model and why a child leaving the room is sometimes developmentally, emotionally, or practically driven—not always resistance or defiance. Before jumping to limits, I emphasize the importance of understanding the why behind the behavior and responding thoughtfully rather than reactively. I also walk through concrete, practical strategies to increase safety and containment without trapping the child or violating child-centered principles. From using a spinny rolly chair and strategic positioning to recognizing when a child needs accommodation versus a limit, this episode focuses on creating barriers to unsafe behavior—not barriers to autonomy. Managing runners is about safety, attunement, and clinical judgment, and when those pieces come together, children gradually no longer need to escape the playroom. In this Game Changers episode, I address a pattern I've been seeing everywhere: therapists becoming overly focused on identifying, interpreting, and assigning meaning to themes and symbolic play. I explain why this pulls us out of attunement, distracts us from the child, and risks turning CCPT into an interpretive exercise rather than a relational, child-centered process. Themes can absolutely be useful—but only in the context of parent consultations. In the playroom, our job is presence, attunement, and skill execution, not analysis. I also offer a strong caution against "making leaps" or weaving narratives out of play behaviors. Children are experiential and emotional, not symbolic theorists sending coded messages. They work through what they need to work through whether we understand it or not. When our skills become automatic and our presence is grounded, we naturally begin to recognize patterns—but that awareness should never come at the cost of focusing on the child. The play is just the play; our priority is always the child, the relationship, and the process that leads to healing. About Leela Aheer   Hon. Leela Sharon Aheer was first elected as a Member of Alberta's Legislative Assembly for the Chestermere-Rocky View constituency on May 5, 2015.  She was re-elected on April 16, 2019, as the MLA for the newly formed riding of Chestermere-Strathmore.  Born in Edmonton and raised in Chestermere, where she raised her family, Aheer is a proud wife and mother of two amazing young men.  She is also a professional singer, vocal coach, and music teacher, instructing singing in seven languages.  Her passion for music led her to own and operate a successful music studio for twenty-four years in Chestermere and Calgary, where she was heavily involved in arts, volunteerism, and community service.  As Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women (2019 - 2021), Hon. Aheer made significant strides in promoting multiculturalism and women's status.  Her proclamation of Women's Entrepreneurship Day in February 2019 was a historic moment for Canada.  She was the first Minister of Multiculturalism in the last twenty-five years and the first Deputy Leader of the United Conservative Party.   A key priority of the new government was to provide more protections for women through initiatives like Clare's Law.    Hon. Aheer has worked tirelessly to affirm her position as an ally within the Alberta Legislature for those seeking shelter from gender-based violence, racism, and female genital mutilation.  In May of 2022, her work on this matter came to fruition when The Health Professions (Protecting Women and Girls) Amendment Act, 2022, a Bill she championed in the Legislature, earned Royal Assent.  This significant achievement is a testament to her commitment to social justice.  MLA Aheer is renowned in her community and among her peers for her strategic insights and ability to build meaningful partnerships.  Hon Aheer was appointed Senior Director of Strategy and Partnerships with BioAro Inc., a precision health and longevity medicine leader, in July 2024.  She was also appointed the BioSport Chief Growth Officer. Dr Michael Stepniak is an Australian scholar, musician, and academic leader who returned home in 2025 after four decades abroad. He now serves as the ninth Master and Head of College at Queen's College, The University of Melbourne. His career has been shaped by intellectual rigour, artistic excellence, and institutional vision, spanning conservatoria, universities, and senior leadership roles in the United States and now Australia. He also holds the title of Honorary Principal Fellow at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Educated at Harvard University as a Spencer Fellow, he holds both a Doctor of Education and a Master of Education, as well as two Master of Music degrees: in viola performance from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, and in musicology from Northwestern University. He completed his undergraduate studies with distinction, and trained as a violinist at the New England Conservatory. As a chamber musician, he has performed as violist and violinist in major concert halls across North America and Europe, collaborating with artists as varied as Ann Schein, Arlo Guthrie, and John Patitucci. His performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio and praised by The Washington Post and others for their expressiveness and refinement. He is also the author of several books on leadership, education, and creativity in the arts. These include Don'ts for Deans and Academic Leaders (2023), Leading Change That Matters (2022), and Beyond the Conservatory Model (2019). He has spoken widely on cultural leadership, institutional change, and the future of education, and has held key governance and advisory roles, including serving on the Board of Directors of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans. Before returning, Dr Stepniak served as Executive Dean for Creativity and the Arts and Professor of Music at Shenandoah University in the United States, where he led strategic planning, launched new academic programs, and played a central role in philanthropic development. As Dean of Shenandoah Conservatory for 14 years, he helped elevate its international profile and built lasting partnerships with donors, international artists, and communities.
