In this episode, we take a break from thinking about deer as Pierce sits down with Erik Woll of Woll E. Bugger Fly Fishing Guide Service. Erik is a lifelong fly fisherman from central Illinois who found home in the Milwaukee area of Wisconsin, where he quickly discovered the giant brown trout that come into the Lake Michigan tributary rivers and streams every fall. In 2019 he founded Woll E. Bugger Fly Fishing Guide Service to guide others onto the world class fishing that can be found in the Southeast corner of the state. Pierce & Erik cover everything you need to know to target these fish from what gear you need, what the fish are doing, where to find them, and how to get them to eat. They also debate the ethics of targeting spawning fish and various schools of thought surrounding the issue. If you'd like to get in touch with Erik and book your trip, you can get in touch with him on Facebook or Instagram by searching Woll. E. On this week's Deer Season Special Bonus episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are joined by Steve Sherk Jr. from Sherk's guide service. Many of you know Steve as the public land grinder who spends 300+ days a year in the woods scouting and hunting. Steve has shared insight throughout the years via podcasts and social media for many hunters providing strategy and advice. But what goes on in a Pennsylvania public land guide service? Steve shares stories of different clientele that have traveled from all over the country to hunt with him. He recalls big deer that hit the ground after years of pursuit. He also recalls the ones that got away, for some pretty crazy reasons too! We discuss the higher odds success of Pennsylvania rifle season and some of Steve's strategies to connect amidst the orange army. This episode meshes well with the time of year - hopefully you can learn from some of these stories if you still have a tag in your pocket! On this episode of Huntavore, Nick and his buddies have a standing tradition of a one night only deer camp at a cabin in the woods. The night is as much about getting together as it is actually hunting for deer. Hitting whitetail season hard in archery, the more social and less stressful feel of firearm season is a reprieve. Along with a healthy dose of beer and booze, the food spread is always a winner. This year, the archery killed deer hearts were marinated and seared for tacos. New adds were bear sausage and backstrap from Mitchell Shirk, and wild boar bacon. All were huge wins with the crew. The second event was a needed cut night at Huntavore HQ. 5 does taken by the group, and lots of processing was needed. Each guy had a set plan for how they wanted their deer done. Some wanted more roasts and steaks, and others wanted mostly ground material for sticks and sausage. I kept my deer back for cutting with my son, and more “fancy” cuts. The experience of cut night is both an amazing night of fun and laughs, but also a bit of slip in quality of cutting. It's a balancing act, you want to get the most out of the harvest, but you also want to harvest as much of the fun as possible. Hey everyone, welcome to episode 201 of the Antler Up Podcast! On this week's episode I was joined by PA native Mark Belles. Mark is an avid hunter who loves whitetail and getting out for bear during the season. Mark had a very quick season this year as far as whitetails are concerned. By quick, I mean tagging out on his buck on the statewide opener back in September. Mark is a friend of Tom Runscavage, who is a great friend of mine. It was great to have the opportunity to speak with Mark and hear certain perspectives on deer and bear hunting and how important mindset plays a role in what we do in the woods. This episode was originally going to be an episode for the Antler Up Report, however I decided to make this just a regular episode. We led things off by talking about mindset and how important it is when it comes to hunting. Over the past few seasons Mark has been pretty successful and he shares what he believes what has led to this success. One key aspect that Mark brings up is exploring and just being in the woods. I couldn't agree more with this and I know it sounds ridiculously simple, but it also means putting in quality time and not just shooting for miles and overall time. Following this we dive into Mark's buck success story and a few other topics to finish out this episode! Stay safe in the woods this upcoming rifle season here in PA! Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week! Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up! On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by friend Phil Holcombe. Phil is a familiar voice on the show as well as a variety of others and for good reason - he is a well rounded deer hunter and outdoorsman. From managing micro parcels of private land, to hunting big woods public, he loves deer hunting from the beginning to the end. This show revolves all around rifle season deer hunting. Phil discusses his strategies to get around pressure the first few days of season after some close calls in archery. From here, he and Mitch discuss safe and successful deer drives. This involves effective communication, leadership roles, set up strategies, and more! Use some of these tips this year, you won't be disappointed! Charles Admire joins John this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast for a little midseason update. Charles was on right before the opening of archery season to talk about some of his plans for the upcoming year and a few bucks he was hoping to catch up with. Half way through the season he and John were both able to harvest one of their target bucks, with Charles taking a personal best! Charles talks about how Texas's antler restrictions have really helped the age class on their property, and how the last two years they have seen a big bump in older age class deer. Those older age class bucks have generally also sported larger headgear, which led to Charles being able to shoot his biggest buck to date. The buck managed to elude him during archery season, but a well timed cold front brought some opening day of rifle season success! Today's show opens with Arica's recent hunting expenditures. It's been a little slow go but on a recent hunt for the first time ever she heard a buck grunting coming through the woods. Heart pounding excitement kicked in as she heard him coming closer through the woods. A doe walked right past her so she's super excited waiting on this buck to come right through where the doe did. The buck grunting edges closer through the woods and finally comes to light – unfortunately it's a button buck!! She sat for a while longer when she heard some more rustling coming through the woods, make sure to tune into this episode sponsored by GunBroker.com! Next up Brayden talks about his recent hunting trip with Phil on a private farm that really just wants them to take some deer off of it. After tree hopping for a while he finally got settled in when not long after he got a text from Phil that a buck was coming across the field. Brayden drug some Tink's 69 on the way in and Phil's buck came in right on a line following the trail. Phil let an arrow fly on this buck and got a good blood trail to start with. Unfortunately, it started to dry up as the trail went on, all the way up to a neighboring property. He let it set overnight and after connecting with the land owner next door he continued his search but unfortunately came up empty handed. Jacob covers a whole week of outdoor stories that he's had the pleasure to collect here lately. His first story goes in depth of him chasing whitetail during bow season. The absolute perfect scenario comes to fruition with a really nice 8-point working a scrape line directly up to him. He drew back and…you'll have to tune in to this episode to hear exactly what happened! He also spent some time in North Carolina on a fishing trip at Deep Creek in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. They had some awesome success starting with a nice brown trout and a few smaller ones as well. Fishing clear water creeks, he got some awesome fishing knocked out on this trip with some real trophy fish being reeled in. Circling back to whitetail he goes over his exciting weekend back chasing whitetail during rifle opener. Closing out Derek dives into his recent hunting expenditures chasing whitetail. He let a really solid buck walk on opening day that he's hoping he doesn't regret later in the season. He gives a great description of his hunting spot to set the scene on just how close he let this deer walk for a second time a few days later! After spending some time watching a small forky chasing a doe back and forth a real nice buck makes his appearance. Make sure to tune in to this episode to hear how his hunt turned out! If you like what you're hearing, please leave us a rate and review!! Last episode of November on Michigan Wild this week. An episode all about fishing rivers for steelhead with Shane Rodenburg. Shane has dove into river fishing the last 4 years and is absolutely torn up with it. Nate being an avid hunter is still slightly perplexed why someone would purposely target fish instead of whitetails this time of year. However the more time Nate spends talking with people who have a passion for fishing the more enlightened he gets. Nate and Shane discuss the many parallels there are between chasing river fish along with whitetails throughout the fall. Scouting and having an adequate amount of time are some important factors that allow guys to be successful at a high level. You can follow Shane along at misteelheader on Instagram. On today's show with GunBroker.com, we're talking one of the most controversial rounds out today – the 6.5 Creedmoor, with both Chris Powell from Houndsman XP Podcast and Rick Larnerd from Gobbler Knob Long Rifles. No matter what side of the fence you sit on pertaining to the 6.5, we may make you mad by the end of this episode! Starting off, Allen goes into a little background on the 6.5, its creation, and how it got to where it is today. Out of the gate, the 6.5 was touted mostly as a long distance paper punching round, but not very much beyond that. Well, Hornady got their hands on it and flipped that stigma on its head. Listen in to this episode presented by GunBroker.com to hear our entire in-depth conversation on the 6.5 Creedmoor. Up next, Logan dives into the 6.5 even being used for plains game over in Africa, to be clear, for the smaller plains game, definitely not most of the larger ones! We get into how people feel about taking elk with the 6.5, with the general consensus being that the .30 caliber cartridges still reign supreme there, however it is most definitely something that you can do. We go over long range shooting with one of the biggest caveats on the 6.5 being some people overlook shot placement because they believe the 6.5 is the magic round, which may be a large reason why the 6.5 receives so much criticism. Closing out we go over everyone's first rifle cartridge, with a few very interesting answers from the crew! We also debate how the 6.5 managed to blow up to be as popular as it is today. From launch, the 6.5 seemed to have the perfect storm for success, and in many ways it most certainly has been. We also go over some other rounds that may be the next sleeper round to blow up like the 6.5 Creedmoor. Do you think the 6.5 Creedmoor is just a fad or around for the long haul? The show launches every Thursday morning. Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts. Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content! There's still a lot of season left. But for many of us, the passing of the rut means it's time to return to the real world. Work, family, holidays, and all those obligations we neglected in October and early November now demand our attention and we simply can't spend the time in the woods like we did earlier in the year. The season isn't over, but it's a great time to reflect on what you've learned, and how you've grown as a deer hunter. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles about lessons learned the hard way from their rutcations. Tune in to hear what they got right, what they got wrong, and what they plan to change moving forward. Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content! Hey everyone, welcome to episode 200 of the Antler Up Podcast! On this week's episode I was joined by PA native and straight up awesome hunter Chad Snader. I am thrilled to finally have Chad on the podcast! This is literally like 3 years in the making. A few years back I was trying to possibly do the mid-season episodes, and asked Chad to come on. Plans fell through, but we have kept tabs on each other and over these 3 seasons or so I have watched Chad knock buck after buck down, turkey after turkey and this year he had one helluva week in October. So, we discussed his success from this specific week where he notched his PA bear tag, fall turkey tag and buck tag! Chad and I have a good conversation during this hour where we get an introduction to who he is, what has helped Chad become more consistent with his success over the years and more. I found Chad to be extremely relatable and I believe you will as well. Just another great hunter from the state of PA that puts in the work and enjoys himself out in the outdoors. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and family. Stay safe in the woods this upcoming rifle season here in PA! Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week! Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up! Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content! Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Michigan Wild returning guest Brandon Travis and Nate recap the 5th week of the season. This week was the start of Brandon's bow camp down in Indiana and also the same week Nate's camp headed down to Illinois. Brandon has past hunting experience on this property along with good history of how bucks act during the rut. He breaks down each day and the mindset he had as he arrived on the property. Brandon eventually settles on an awesome rut funnel that the deer were using and he had the stereo typical rut hunts that every bowhunter dreams about. Paired with the determination to sit all day and go to an area that the deer wanted to be in eventually led to success on the last day of his hunt. On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we chat with Jason Say from Wired Outdoors. Jason is a born and raised Pennsylvania hunter that works hard each and every season to fill his buck tag. We begin by discussing how the content in which he produces over time has changed. His goal is to make the most relatable content possible to his viewers. The things you see him do on his show are things many PA hunters can accomplish with a little sweat equity. Last year in 2022, Jason had an emotional rollercoaster hunt for a deer that was a gross Boone and Crockett buck. His strategy for this deer was not much different than his others - hunt smart and as often as possible. However, the grind for this buck was like nothing he had ever experienced. After over 70 sits for this deer, he was able to wrap his tag around it during PA rifle season. You can see everything on the Wired Outdoors YouTube channel and be sure to check out All In: A Deer Hunting Documentary - a story for a magnificent PA whitetail. This week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast, John breaks down his 8 day rutcation, including the Texas rifle opener and 6 full days in Iowa. There was no shortage of bucks in Iowa, in fact John had over 25 different bucks in bow range over the course of 6 days. Finding "the" buck however was definitely a challenge. John gave it everything he had but ended up coming home without filling a tag. That doesn't necessarily mean that his Iowa season is closed though... John talks about some of the major differences between hunting the midwest and his traditional stomping grounds further south. He was shocked at how similar the breakdown of land was, with your usual ag fields, pockets of timber, and timber lined creeks. One thing that presented a major challenge though was the steeper more rugged terrain that made the wind extremely unpredictable. John was constantly moving and making micro adjustments to his set up, trying to put the wind in his advantage. He did see some really nice bucks, and is counting down the days till his return. Today's show opens with Dan's scouting trip for his upcoming hunt on Land Between the Lakes. He started out telling us his first experience ever hearing an elk bugle, what would've been a perfect moment kind of got ruined a bit, you'll have to listen in to see how! On his scouting trip he ran into a few new trail cameras on the part of the public he has been drawn to hunt on, unfortunately he's going to have more competition than he would've liked! Brayden then dives into his recent weekend out public land hunting. He got in the stand super early with a nice overcast so it was completely dark, next thing he knows he looks up and here comes a small twinkle of light through the woods. The next thing he knows there's two headlights coming through the woods and eventually make their way almost all the way to his tree. He flashed his light for a while until eventually they turned and made their way to a different spot. The morning progressed slowly until his hunt started to heat up a bit. Make sure to listen to this episode Sponsored by GunBroker.com to hear the action from his hunt! Closing out Brayden gives us a rundown on a mysterious blue truck that's been parked at a public hunting spot parking lot for weeks. Thinking someone maybe left the truck there, things take a very interesting turn when they are loading up the truck ready to go. This whole area has been weird since he started hunting the area, make sure to listen in to just how crazy it is. . If you like what you're hearing, please leave us a rate and review!!
