We also talk about a few other key weeds like palmer amaranth, wild oat and green foxtail. “ And if there's anybody listening who's thinking about using Tough on lentil, please call me before you use it because there's some things that you need to know. I mean just reading the label, you're not going to have sufficient information because all they say on there is spray 6 to 20 ounces and oh, by the way, you can tank mix with Metribuzin. Well, that is a recipe for potential disaster if you do that. Because we need to talk rates, we need to talk timing, we need to talk adjuvants, and I'm encouraging growers to do this only as a last resort because you will see severe injury.” - Dr. Brian JenksThis Week on Growing Pulse Crops:Meet Dr. Brian Jenks, a weed scientist at North Dakota State University based in Minot, NDDiscover the rising risk of herbicide resistance in weed management especially with the weed kochiaLearn the process to evaluate the type of kochia resistance producers may be facing and how to get that service for freeUnderstand the significance of a weed being on the noxious weed list and the impact that has on producersContact Dr. Brian Jenks with any of your weed biology or herbicide questions at (701) 857-7677Growing Pulse Crops is produced by Dr. Audrey Kalil and hosted by Tim Hammerich of the Future of Agriculture Podcast.

Exploring the importance of a program-based approach to weed control in soybeans. Drake explains how farmers can get ahead of weed pressure by integrating multiple sites of action, using cultural practices like tillage and crop rotation, and applying preemergence herbicides before weeds become established. With planting season approaching, the discussion highlights why preemergence herbicides are crucial for preventing weeds from emerging and setting the stage for season-long control. Corteva Agriscience is introducing two new preemergence solutions—Kyber® Pro and Sonic® Boom herbicides—which provide multiple modes of action to effectively target tough-to-control weeds while ensuring crop safety and tank-mix flexibility. We also discuss the benefits of following up with a postemergence application, including how Enversa™ herbicide offers extended residual activity, superior tank-mix compatibility, and strong control against glyphosate- and ALS-resistant weeds. Drake breaks down how these new products fit into an integrated weed management system, ensuring farmers can maintain cleaner fields, protect yields, and sustain herbicide effectiveness for the future.Throughout the episode, we also address common misconceptions about program-based weed control, including concerns over cost and complexity. Drake emphasizes that while a comprehensive weed management approach may require planning, the cost of neglecting weed control is far greater in terms of lost yield potential and resistance development. Dr. Ian Burke is a weed scientist at Washington State University. His work focuses on weed biology and ecology, and he does a lot of work with herbicides. Dr. Burke discusses his research evaluating herbicides for use in peas, lentils and chickpeas and how to manage herbicide carry over issues that can impact these crops. This is the deep dive into herbicide carry over that you might not have even realized you needed.“ We have not enough moisture during the summer to break down the herbicides and not enough heat units during the winter to break down the herbicides. So we really have sort of a perfect storm, a very unique situation, in the United States where herbicides applied in our important rotational crop like wheat persists for far longer than than anywhere else.” - Ian Burke, Ph.D.This Week on Growing Pulse Crops:Meet Ian Burke, Ph.D. and learn about cropping systems in his area of the Pacific NorthwestUnderstand herbicide carryover and the factors that causes herbicide persistence like the characteristics of the products themselves, environmental conditions, and soil propertiesDiscover how farmers can manage herbicide carryover while still maintaining the efficacy of their herbicide program. The first year Nick Hedden started helping growers manage water hemp was 2016. It hasn't taken long for a variety of products to lose their effectiveness.“It's definitely been a challenge,” says Hedden, who is an agronomist with Pioneer in Western Indiana. “Water hemp has between 6-8 chemical class resistances. We've got to be thorough, and have a good action plan for 20205 water hemp management.” During this episode of the Pioneer Indiana Agronomy Podcast, Hedden talks with hosts Carl Joern and Brian Shrader. Hededen's advice is to have multiple, very strong modes of action. There is no silver bullet, but there are some new options.  He recommends starting with an excellent pre-emergence product to control water hemp before it breaks through the ground.“After emergence, we are seeing effectiveness with Enlist and Liberty mixed,” Hedden says. “This is what I'd recommend if you've got some really heavy water hemp pressure.”Corteva also has a new product called Kyber® Pro that could be effective.More about Kyber® Pro: https://www.corteva.us/products-and-solutions/crop-protection/kyber-pro.html

Controlling weeds on farms is a sticky, two part challenge. First, you've got to identify the weeds, as distinct from the plants you want to grow. Then, you've got to destroy the undesirables and keep the rest. For today's farmers, these two tasks can seem straightforward, but to do them at the scale required in modern agriculture– not so much. Identifying weeds, especially with computer vision, is a topic we discussed on the podcast last year, and now we're circling back to talk about the available solutions on the destruction side. Herbicides have been the unchallenged behemoth in this space for decades, but as issues with efficacy and environmental impact mount, farmers are increasingly looking to other options. In the last few years we've seen many novel solutions– from mechanical tools to microwaves to flamethrowers. This week, we're sitting down with Liam Hescock, Founder and CEO of Azaneo, one of our portfolio companies, to talk about their solution– which harnesses the power of electricity. For more information and resources, visit our website. The information in this post is not investment advice or a recommendation to invest. University of Oregon study finds link between widely used herbicide and infant health

Glyphosate is an herbicide that’s widely used in agriculture in the U.S. and around the world. It’s the active ingredient in Roundup, which is commonly applied to crops like soy, cotton and corn that have been genetically modified to withstand the weed killer. The Environmental Protection Agency maintains that glyphosate is “not likely to be carcinogenic to humans,” although a ruling in 2022 by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has prompted the agency to review the chemical’s risks to human health and the environment.  A new study by economists at the University of Oregon examined how glyphosate may also be impacting the health of infants. It looked at millions of birth records from 1990 to 2013 to see if there were differences in birth weight and gestational length after Roundup use intensified in rural counties that grew genetically modified corn, soy and cotton compared to rural counties that weren’t suitable for growing those GM crops. It found that exposure to glyphosate was associated with lower birth weights and shorter gestations, with those effects being greater for some babies more than others. Joining us to talk about the findings is Ed Rubin, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Oregon.
