Bestselling author Chris Bohjalian has written 26 books, including mega-bestsellers Oprah's Book Club pick Midwives and The Flight Attendant, adapted into an Emmy-winning TV series — and yet he still worries that his next book won't be any good. Isn't it funny that even the greats of the field still worry?! But not to fear: Chris is no amateur and his latest book is thought-provoking, different, gripping, and memorable. When a bright young woman, about to head to Yale, swings a golf club at the range of her club, her life changes in an instant. The ball blasts through a hole in the netting and instantly kills a caddy, a classmate of hers. What follows is an examination of a neighborhood percolating with infidelity, blame, and gossip, a look at how easy it is to end up with the wrong people, and an attempt to right a life thrown off track. ** Want more? I reread (and listened to) one of my favorite books, When Breath Becomes Air, before speaking to late author Dr. Paul Kalanithi's widow, Lucy. The book was as moving, thought-provoking, and immersive now as it was when I first inhaled it. It's no surprise that the book spent 68 weeks on the New York Times nonfiction list and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Dr. Paul Kalinithi was obsessed with life and death, philosophy, literature, and science, delving deep into the why of it all, before falling terminally ill with cancer himself, dying at age 37. He left his book, for which Lucy wrote the epilogue and Abraham Verghese wrote the foreword, but he also left his family. I spoke to Lucy about life after Paul, how she toured on his behalf, her relationships and career post-loss, and her daughter. The world lost such a brilliant, special soul. This book is a must-read.** Want more? Become a part of my community! Tonight, we're talking vampires, history's greatest transformation from suspiciously bloated corpse to immortal bisexual aristocrat with a castle, a cape, and absolutely no respect for personal boundaries. We dig into garlic, holy symbols, counting mustard seeds, bricks shoved into mouths, and the alarming number of vampire prevention methods involving someone's severed head near their butt. Then we compare D&D's growing collection of bitey hit-point bags with Pathfinder's bold decision to let you turn almost anything into a vampire. Grab a wooden stake, protect your neck, and remember: the undead pyramid scheme is not a scam if every wight gets eight zombies beneath them. Show Notes Vampires have been haunting folklore for centuries, but before they became wealthy, seductive goth icons, they were mostly blamed on misunderstood decomposition, disease, and humanity's long tradition of confidently inventing explanations for things it did not understand. We explore the regional beliefs surrounding vampires, including animal transformations, compulsive counting, invitations, running water, graveyard horse tests, and the creative methods people used to keep corpses from returning. Apparently, garlic was not enough. Sometimes you needed decapitation, holy water, a brick, and a very specific head-placement strategy. From there, we follow the vampire from folklore through The Vampyre and Dracula, then directly into tabletop gaming. Strahd is examined as D&D's legally distinct Dracula, complete with an Eastern European castle, disposable vampire brides, an unpleasant servant, and an unhealthy obsession with one particular woman. We discuss why vampires make such effective villains, whether they should always be irredeemably evil, and how their intelligence, charisma, resources, and ability to escape make them more interesting than another monster waiting patiently to be reduced to zero hit points. Tyler walks through D&D's increasingly crowded vampire bestiary, including vampire spawn, familiars, mind flayers, Nosferatu, infernalists, wardens, spellcasters, warriors, umbral lords, hopping vampires, and several versions of Strahd. Ash discovers that many updated vampires lost their regeneration and responds with the measured restraint everyone has come to expect. We also uncover the Jiangshi's undead pyramid scheme, where drained victims become wights, wights create zombies, and everyone receives an exciting opportunity to become their own boss. Pathfinder 2e takes a more flexible approach with vampire adjustments that can be applied to nearly any living creature. Want a vampire dwarf, vampire monster, full vampire character, Dhampir, or suspiciously blood-focused animal companion? Pathfinder has paperwork for that. We compare its vampire families, weaknesses, regeneration, player archetypes, unusual feeding options, and the many ways players can embrace eternal life without being reduced to a single edgy species choice. Finally, the Question of the Week asks how to deliver a satisfying campaign ending. The hosts discuss final boss battles, player-driven epilogues, heroic sacrifices, closing character arcs, carrying consequences into future campaigns, and giving everyone enough closure to explain what their character does after saving the world. Tyler also recommends a total party kill, because rocks falling remains the most efficient form of narrative finality. Key Takeaways Vampire folklore varied dramatically between regions, but blood drinking, animal transformations, compulsions, returning corpses, and elaborate burial precautions appeared frequently. Many historical vampire scares were fueled by misunderstandings about decomposition, disease, bloating, and blood appearing around a corpse's mouth. Bram Stoker's Dracula established many of the traits associated with modern vampires, including wealth, sophistication, seduction, immortality, and aristocratic menace. Strahd is essentially D&D's version of Dracula, enhanced with wizard abilities, legendary actions, extensive resources, and enough emotional baggage to fill Castle Ravenloft. Vampires make strong recurring villains because they are intelligent, charismatic, difficult to permanently destroy, and capable of retreating to fight another day. D&D offers numerous vampire variants, but several newer designs reduce them to durable biting monsters, and the removal of regeneration makes them feel less distinct. The Jiangshi can create an expanding hierarchy of wights and zombies, producing what can only be described as an undead pyramid scheme. Pathfinder 2e's vampire adjustments allow GMs to apply vampire abilities to existing creatures instead of relying entirely on separate stat blocks. Pathfinder also provides more vampire-related player options, including the Dhampir heritage, vampire archetype, vampiric companions, and blood-draining spells. A satisfying campaign ending should extend beyond defeating the final boss and give players room to resolve relationships, describe their futures, and address the consequences of their choices. Asking characters what they hope to do after the adventure can help the GM build meaningful rewards and bring long-running stories full circle. Heroic sacrifice can create a powerful bittersweet ending when the choice belongs to the player rather than being forced upon them. Plot holes may be forgotten, but players remember when an old joke, promise, relationship, or seemingly insignificant choice returns during the finale. Welcome to the RPGBOT Podcast. Dana and Tom with special guest, Reed Arnold (Writer, Director, and Star of Do Us Part (2026)) discuss Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) for its 15th Anniversary: directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, written by Dan Fogelman, cinematography by Andrew Dunn, music by Christophe Beck and Nick Urata, editing by Lee Haxall, starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei, and Kevin Bacon.Plot Summary: Up next is a film from 2011 that takes the age-old Hollywood trope of the cinematic makeover and turns it completely on its ear. It's Crazy, Stupid, Love. Now, when we meet Cal Weaver—played with a wonderful, understated desperation by Steve Carell—he is a man whose comfortable, suburban life has just evaporated over dessert. His high school sweetheart and wife of twenty-five years, played by a luminous Julianne Moore, announces she wants a divorce. Suddenly, Cal finds himself cast adrift in the unfamiliar and deeply hostile waters of the modern dating scene.Enter Jacob Palmer, a suave, cynical, and impossibly sharp-dressed bachelor who treats the local lounge like his own personal kingdom. He's played by Ryan Gosling, channeling the kind of effortless, magnetic charisma that would make Cary Grant proud. Jacob takes pity on our broken-hearted protagonist, deciding to mentor Cal in the fine arts of tailored suits, confident posture, and the precise chemistry of the pickup line. But what makes Dan Fogelman's screenplay so compelling isn't just the transformation of Cal. It is how the film expertly weaves multiple generations of romance into a single, chaotic tapestry. We see Cal's teenage son harboring a fierce, agonizing crush on his older babysitter, who in turn harbors her own secret affection. Meanwhile, Jacob—the ultimate, uncatchable playboy—finds his own defenses completely dismantled by a sharp-witted law student, played with incredible comic timing by Emma Stone. It's a film that balances the slick, sophisticated banter of classic 1930s screwball comedies with a raw, very contemporary vulnerability. It reminds us that no matter our age, experience, or wardrobe, love has a way of making fools out of all of us.Chapters00:12 Introduction to Crazy, Stupid, Love06:06 Exploring the Plot and Themes12:05 Character Relationships and Development18:10 Masculinity and Love in the Film24:05 The Makeover Trope and Its Implications33:14 Navigating Relationships and Growth34:38 The Evolution of Long-Term Relationships36:20 Understanding Relationship Dynamics38:16 Stereotypes and Relationship Expectations39:09 Behind the Scenes of Filmmaking42:15 Foreshadowing and Directorial Choices48:45 Cultural Moments in Film52:11 Influences and Inspirations in Filmmaking01:00:49 Antagonists and Character Dynamics01:04:27 Nostalgia and College Experiences01:06:48 Navigating the Film Festival Circuit01:09:23 The Fight for Attention in Film01:11:45 Personal Experiences in Storytelling01:20:11 Choosing Between Writing, Directing, and Acting01:37:01 Best Scene(s)01:45:21 Best Line(s)01:51:14 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy02:02:16 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty02:15:46 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness02:22:31 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability02:29:01 Final Questions and ThoughtsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Bluesky, Threads, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/crazy-stupid-love-2011-ft-reed-arnoldFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:Crazy Stupid Love, movie review, film analysis, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, romantic comedy, anniversary, movie discussion, film critique, best rom-coms, Emma Stone, discussion, romantic, comedy, film discussion, movie scenes, Hollywood, Crazy, Stupid, Love movie, podcast, podcast discussion, podcast episode, movie podcast, film podcast, rom-com, legacy, classic, rewatch, novelty, audience scoreRonny Duncan Studios

Donald Trump and his dutiful Federal Communications Commission chair, Brendan Carr, have been targeting a number of ABC's broadcast licenses, and ABC just challenged this hard in a new filing. In an interesting move, ABC cited Trump's own social media postings and remarks at speeches to show that he is corruptly trying to censor the network as punishment for its content and viewpoints, in violation of the First Amendment. Amusingly, in those examples, Trump blurted right out in public that he does in fact want the FCC to punish ABC precisely because of its speech. Now this has become a weapon against Trump. We talked to law professor Leah Litman, author of a good book about the Supreme Court. She explains why Trump's public bullying of ABC should undermine his case, walks us through the legal ins-and-outs here, details why ABC might prevail, and discusses how open, explicit corruption is intrinsic to his political project. The newly minted New York Times bestseller The Renoir Girls by Brit Catherine Ostler tells a hidden story of what really happened to the young girls in Renoir's famous portraits. As it turns out, they were victims of the Holocaust. How could these high-society children have ended up suffering, one even at Auschwitz? The story digs into government, politics, hatred, antisemitism, art, family, wealth, and class. I adored speaking to Catherine, one of the brightest people I've interviewed, and had the pleasure of meeting her in person afterward on the day her book hit “the list.” Huge thanks to Plum Sykes for the introduction. ** Want more? During this podcast we chat with Land & Legacy consultant Alan Summerford about the management of his properties. We discuss distinct management strategies that produce results, simplify maintenance, and ensure success despite unknown variables that any growing season can throw your way. Some of the topics we cover include pre-emergents, herbicides, mowing food plots, amending food plots, herbicide proficiency, and producing high quality forage during the hunting season. Additionally, we discuss common themes observed during recent consulting trips. Similar trends appear in successes. Its not uncommon to see some folks who excel in food plots, but struggle with native habitat as well as the inverse: those who do great with a chainsaw and a drip torch but struggle with food plots. Both are necessary skills to hone and really take your property to the next level.
Listen to learn how to move an audience with a character who never changes. Do characters need to change for you to have a satisfying story? That's a question we've been asking since, like, episode five of this podcast. And we're finally talking about it! In this continuation of our deep dive into character arcs -- Stu, Chas and Mel break down MOANA, APOLLO 13 and THE DRESSMAKER to work out what carries a story when a character arc doesn't. If your protagonist isn't going to change, the drama has to come from what they do to everyone else. We do manage to figure out some tools that carry a steadfast story: doubt and wobble (a character with no doubt isn't steadfast, they're a psychopath), emotional events between characters, and a distinction borrowed from operant conditioning — additive rewards (you gain something) versus subtractive ones (something is taken away). The subtractive reward is why a happy ending can still feel like loss... and it's the thing we reckon that'll matter most when we get to negative arcs. We also wibble-wobble over WILLOW, TAKEN, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, THE MARTIAN, PROJECT HAIL MARY, THE GREY, ALL IS LOST, STAR WARS (as always), GREY GARDENS, PRISCILLA, and how many tampons NASA sent to space. This week, in Gulfport, Mississippi, it's a race to find a woman, who was snatched from her home, before it's too late! All while her husband takes ransom calls, and the police set up roadblocks. But will any of it matter? Or, will this seemingly bloodthirsty kidnapper jump right to murder, if he gets impatient? In the end, a brutal murder takes place. And the killer is complete riddle, with his claimed genius IQ, wild past, and what he was actually trying to accomplish with this murder!! Along the way, we find out that Gulfport should lean into the mud, that just giving a banking executive's name out is apparently a dangerous thing, and that it's hard to claim a murder went a certain way, when the forensics tell a totally different story!! In 1955, Paramount Pictures released one of their tentpole VistaVision epics, Strategic Air Command, starring James Stewart and directed by his longtime collaborator, Anthony Mann. Strategic Air Command is peak, high-resolution, widescreen 1950s propaganda at its finest, and while not a great film (David and I argue about that aspect too!), its time and place in the building of the mythology of Curtis LeMay's US Air Force bombing arm offers a fascinating insight into the mindset of both LeMay and Jimmy Stewart.David, the host of The Cold War channel on YouTube, joins me to bring our long-running Bluesky debate about this film to the channel and look at a film that had US military cooperation at a level that would make Michael Bay and Tom Cruise green with envy.Check out The Cold War channel on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/@TheColdWarTVFollow David on Bluesky here: https://bsky.app/profile/coldwarhost.bsky.social-----------------------------------------------------

A “significant” bomb built for “catastrophic” damage, and a suspected plot to bring violence to the streets of Derry. It was the stuff of Ireland's past, but events last week clearly illustrated that it is also Ireland's present. The foiling of an alleged New IRA plot to detonate a bomb was a stark reminder of the dissident republican activity that quietly continues on both sides of the border. At the heart of the case are two suspects: Simon O'Donovan (44), an employee at the National Museum in Collins Barracks, and Isobella Perrie Sullivan (25), a law student. On this episode of The Indo Daily, host Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Ken Foy, crime correspondent at the Irish Independent, to look at how the plot was uncovered – and what comes next. Venture Unlocked: The playbook for venture capital managers.
Follow me @samirkaji for my thoughts on the venture market, with a focus on the continued evolution of the VC landscape.Welcome back to Venture Unlocked, the podcast that takes you inside the business of venture capital. I'm your host, Samir Kaji.My guest today is Micah Rosenbloom, Managing Partner at Founder Collective, one of the longest standing and respected seed firms in the industry, with early investments in companies like Uber, The Trade Desk, and Coupang. What makes Founder Collective atypical to most successful firms is their decision to keep fund sizes small. In fact, despite their success, they've never raised a fund over 100 million dollars, in a market where nearly every one of their peers has scaled up.In this conversation, Micah and I dig into why they've stayed small, and the data behind it, including a study his team ran on 25 years of venture exits that found the median outcome of the top 500 exits is about 2.7 billion dollars. We also spent time on his post that described why the industry may have lost the plot by obsessing over fund and firm strategy instead of simply focusing on the core of finding unique opportunities that early, priced appropriately, and led by great operators.Micah is a two time founder himself, a clear thinker, and someone who's willing to say what a lot of investors only think. I think you'll get a lot out of this one. Thanks for listening to another episode of Venture Unlocked. I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Micah. If you'd like to get Venture Unlocked content straight to your inbox, go to ventureunlocked.substack.com and sign up, or head over to Apple Podcasts or Spotify and subscribe. Thanks again for listening.Micah Rosenbloom is a General Partner at Founder Collective, a seed-stage venture capital firm built by founders for founders. Before becoming an investor, Micah co-founded multiple technology companies, including Brontes Technologies, which was acquired by 3M, giving him firsthand experience building and scaling startups. Today, he invests in early-stage companies across enterprise software, healthcare, and frontier technologies, and has backed successful startups including Verkada, Lovevery, Talos, Plated, and Trusted. Known for his founder-first philosophy, Micah is a respected voice on capital efficiency, venture strategy, and building enduring companies.Timestamps:Topics in this conversation include:* Seed Capital Scarcity in Boston and Birth of Founder Collective (5:18)* Why Small Funds Create Optionality and Better Multiples (9:02)* Capital Efficiency vs Growth Treadmill and Founder Psychology (13:08)* Data on Billion Dollar Exits and 2.7B Median Outcome (18:20)* Can AI Change the Exit Math or Just Inflate Valuations?
