Some of the most amazing entrepreneurs I meet have taken skills honed in another profession and brought them to the world of business. They bring a clear, powerful value proposition to the table and a great sense of what their market really needs - and today's guest is a great example. Christina Nicholson is an award-winning journalist and mentor to other business owners by teaching them how to be their own publicist. Her newest project, Podcast Clout, is a Software as a Service (SaaS) venture that builds customized pitch lists of the top podcasts. To start off Christina and I talk about her work in media and journalism and what she realized about all the not-so-great pitches she received on a daily basis. She walks us through the transition to freelance work and how she decided (after a bit of hesitation) to build a public relations agency. Then Christina tells us about Podcast Clout, the SaaS product subscription service she’s building with an awesome team of developers to fill a huge hole in the podcast publicity market. You can find complete show notes and resources for this episode at scalingdeep.com/media-maven-christina-nicholson.
Washington state is still observing shelter in place, and over the past couple months, many of us have been staying connected through video calls. Inspired by this community building, the SNACCs called a couple members of Seattle PAAC who haven’t yet been on the podcast. First up, Pauline called Kenji Fujinaka, and they talked about “procrasti-baking” and the experience that brought Kenji to SPAAC. Then Christina spoke with Katya Nemec about her upbringing in Asia, the complexities of her identity and how it has shifted in different contexts in the US, as well as what is bringing her joy during the lockdown. Thank you to Kenji and Katya for joining us on the podcast!
John met this week's guest in middle school. Then Christina met him in high school. (For New York City, those are pretty crazy odds. As the ride and song state, the world is indeed, small.) Thanks to social media, the three have been able to remain in contact and peek in on one another's lives. And what a life this guy is living! Police officer. Parent. Bomb squad. New Romance. Marriage. Parent AGAIN in his 40's and then soon after retirement and a new life in Florida. But as he tells us, he feels that he's only just begun. Strap in, folks! This Podgecast is over TWO HOURS, but as it was being recorded, time absolutely FLEW by. (Fun Fact - Two of the three people talking on this week's Podgecast took surreptitious pee breaks. Try to guess who and when!)

Oh boy what a meaty session we have for you as Christina Mercer, Somrata Sarkar, David Price and Henry Burrell tackle three whopics (whopping topics) head on.Somrata takes us into the sometimes scary thoughts of our own digital afterlives. Should we be worried that we'll end up as misrepresentative chat bots one day? Who will have the authority to police the companies that harvest our data? Then Christina explains the knife edge America is on when it comes to net neutrality. Despite recent hope, there's still a chance the web across the pond will be ruthlessly metered and segmented. Finally David asks us if we've checked our unused email accounts recently, as there might be a lot of desperate noodle companies in there begging you to stay on their mailing lists.
