The Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) are relatively well-known in the U.S. today (to hear more about their story, see our previous episode), but they weren't the only women who flew planes in World War II. A small group of Americans joined pilots from 25 other countries in England's Air Transport Auxiliary, where they ferried hundreds of thousands of planes across the British Isles. Among the pilots were women from all countries and men too old or otherwise unfit for active duty (including a WWI Ace with only one eye and arm). They braved poor weather, mechanically iffy planes, regular bombings, and dangerous conditions to keep the Allies in the air. Thanks to our guests in this episode Becky Aikman, Author of Spitfires: The American Women who Flew in the Face of Danger During WWII Richard Poad, organizer, Air Transport Auxiliary Museum at the Maidenhead Heritage Centre Oral histories in the episode came from the NASA Oral History Project and the TWU Libraries Women's Collection at Texas Women's University. When we last spoke with Cameo in 2023, she was a driven student who seemed to be thriving, managing her mental health in a way that truly worked for her. Then, she reached out with an update. In a conversation that is both heartbreaking and incredibly self-aware, she describes being trapped in a prison of her own making—battling all-consuming OCD, anxiety, and the lingering grip of an eating disorder that has followed her since childhood. In the final episode of our Air War series we travel across the landscape of the First World War and discover what we can find that connects us to the story of the Royal Flying Corps and RAF in WW1, from memorials to cemeteries and sites of former aerodromes. Along the way we examine the stories of some of the Aces from James McCudden VC to Manfred Von Richthofen - The Red Baron - to Bob Little from Australia and Major Lanoe Hawker VC, before seeing the battlefields where Albert Ball VC's war ended and the fields where Mick Mannock VC crashed in 1918. This week it's across the pond to meet one of Great Britain's most beloved comedians, Frankie Howerd. After serving in WWII, Frankie launched his show business career, first gaining fame on radio and in music hall revues. When his popularity began to wane, Frankie tried different formats but it was a regular spot on David Frost's hit show That Was The Week That Was that brought him back into pubic view. After that, Frankie mixed movie roles. stage appearances, and television guest spots. He even had a key role as Mr. Mustard in the Bee Gee's ill-fated movie version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. A recipient of the Order of the British Empire, Frankie has also been remembered with documentaries and a biopic. As always find extended cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Frankie? Frankie was part of the cast of That Was the Week That Was -- a seminal slice of British satire and one that showcased his unusual delivery. https://youtu.be/oLk4g3TL6Rk?si=5_KsO6KbRpGqd_1c After a stint on TW3 returned Frankie to the public eye he got his own variety show. Not much exists online from that show, but this episode will give you a taste. https://youtu.be/Jys5-x-Flew?si=DNCrGxx1g8oYYqs3 After Frankie starred in a smash revival of A Funny Think Happened on the Way to the Forum, which led to a fun series -- Up Pompeii! -- set in Ancient Rome. Frankie played a smart aleck slave named Lurcio who would often talk directly to the audience. Here's a full episode. https://youtu.be/SoyuS1niq6E?si=uEnsYVkiHpQ3grjo Later in his career, Frankie was a mainstay on tv variety programs, including this bit from the Royal Variety Performance in 1982.https://youtu.be/Qw6kSF0ZLZw?si=tzdzr45Oymtdfp0j

Once you tell yourself the nearly impossible is possible and you do the work to make it happen, you stop focusing on what's possible. So, you might turn to certain things that show you figured out the impossible. For me, I didn't really have the best role models growing up, but I became one of those people. I bought McLaren's and Lambos. I've had damn near every kind you can imagine. Flew everywhere on private jets. And what I realized was that isn't the real me. Proof came when the last McLaren (720) I owned didn't get driven but maybe 3 times the last 6 months I owned it, I knew I didn't need it. It did not show proof of my success. My kids starting asking me more about going to the Ranch and that's when I leaned in and saw the proof of what I needed to see. I've been pouring into that more than anything........ My proof of success is in spending time with my kids...... And that's a huge success. Do you ever get to a new destination and always have a realization? That life is so much more than your daily routine, that beauty exists in the simplest moments, and that stillness has a language of its own? That's exactly what happened when I arrived in Cuba. The music in the streets, the warmth of the people, the vintage cars rolling past colorful colonial buildings—it all felt like a world paused in time, reminding me to slow down and just be.Sometimes, travel doesn't just show you a new place. It mirrors back the parts of yourself you've forgotten. Cuba did that for me.

Tyler Perry's Straw has a misleading title — because it isn't a straw that breaks the camel's back in the film about a single mom (Taraji P. Henson) driven to extremes, but an absolutely nightmarish event that is only revealed in the film's insane final act.In this episode, Aaron, Keith and Tim talk about whether the movie takes place in hell, great movie twists and why they work — from Fight Club to The Sixth Sense — and the correct way to pronounce San Pedro. We wrap up by praising Tubi's Flew'd Out and the works of fantasy author Brandon Sanderson. "At the funeral, when I invoked the name Jesus, out of nowhere, came this huge wind, I thought the tent was about to blow over. And people were using their cell phones to video something behind me." ---------- When Leah agreed to preside at the funeral of her long-time friend's mother, she made it clear—she would be invoking the name of Jesus. Her friend, long angry at God and resistant to faith, agreed… reluctantly. What unfolded next was anything but ordinary. Penny, the woman who had passed, had always surrounded herself with images of dragonflies. At the funeral, safe to say that this large insect gave a loud spiritual hello to those in attendance. And when Leah spoke the name “Jesus” for the first time, a sudden, forceful wind nearly blew down the tent. Was this nature, or something supernatural? This episode explores how God meets us where we are, how signs can be unmistakable, and how He uses even funerals to soften hardened hearts and open spiritual eyes. ---------- Share Your Story If you have a Touched by Heaven moment that you would like to share with Trapper, please leave us a note at https://touchedbyheaven.net/contact Our listeners look forward to hearing about life-changing encounters and miraculous stories every week. Cannes 2025 has arrived—and you can count on our on-the-Croisette crew of Film Comment contributors to cut through the noise with thoughtful dispatches, interviews, and Podcasts. This year's festival is packed with exciting premieres, including new films from Richard Linklater, Lynne Ramsay, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Spike Lee, Bi Gan, Julia Ducournau, Wes Anderson, and many more. For our second Podcast from the French Riviera, Isabel Stevens and Thomas Flew from Sight and Sound sit down with Film Comment Editor Devika Girish to discuss Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the purported final installment of the long-running action series. To set things up, Isabel talks about her recent career-spanning interview with Tom Cruise, the cover story of the latest issue of Sight and Sound, before the group leans into the high-octane pyrotechnics of the film. Next, they turn to two other hotly anticipated premieres: Two Prosecutors (19:55), from Ukrainian auteur Sergei Loznitsa, and Left-Handed Girl (32:20), directed by longtime Sean Baker–collaborator Shih-Ching Tsou. Subscribe today to the Film Comment Letter for a steady stream of Cannes coverage, providing everything you need to know about the 2025 edition.
They were crop dusters and debutantes, college girls and performers in flying circuses-all of them trained as pilots. Because they were women, they were denied the opportunity to fly for their country when the United States entered the Second World War. But Great Britain, desperately fighting for survival, would let anyone-even Americans, even women-transport warplanes. Thus, twenty-five daring young aviators bolted for England in 1942, becoming the first American women to command military aircraft. In a faraway land, these "spitfires" lived like women decades ahead of their time. Risking their lives in one of the deadliest jobs of the war, they ferried new, barely tested fighters and bombers to air bases and returned shot-up wrecks for repair, never knowing what might go wrong until they were high in the sky. Many ferry pilots died in crashes or made spectacular saves. It was exciting, often terrifying work. The pilots broke new ground off duty as well, shocking their hosts with thoroughly modern behavior. With cinematic sweep, in Spitfires: The American Women Who Flew in the Face of Danger during World War II (Bloomsbury, 2025) Becky Aikman follows the stories of nine of the women who served, drawing on unpublished diaries, letters, and records, along with her own interviews, to bring these forgotten heroines fully to life. Spitfires is a vivid, richly detailed account of war, ambition, and a group of remarkable women whose lives were as unconventional as their dreams. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. You can find Miranda's interviews on New Books with Miranda Melcher, wherever you get your podcasts. Learn more about your ad choices. John discusses the Dow jumping 1,000 points after Trump capitulated and backed off a trade war with China, lowering baseline tariffs for a 90 day window. And, he also talks about Trump defending his plan to accept a $400 million luxury jet from Qatar to be used instead of Air Force One while he is president. Then, he interviews the Deputy Director of the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project, Cody Wofsy. They discuss his work focusing on limiting state and local immigration enforcement, asylum access, protecting judicial review, and fighting federal enforcement overreach and abuse. He has litigated numerous cases at all levels of federal and state courts, including blocking asylum bans, limiting the use of immigration detainers, challenging the Muslim Ban, and curtailing unlawful expedited removal practices. They also talk about the attack on birthright citizenship, which he says is just part of a larger right wing effort to weaken civil liberties and radically alter the idea of what a “citizen” can be. Then, John welcomes back comedian Rhonda Hansome to criticize, gossip, and joke about Trump's latest stupidity.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We just flew into Newark and, honestly, we're lucky to be alive. This week we're talking about the airport chaos (spoiler: the planes disappeared from radar??), a janitor who peed herpes into the office water cooler, and Kanye West suing his dentist over a nitrous oxide addiction. We also become accidental water snobs thanks to a deep dive into the world of water sommeliers (Dasani slander incoming), and yep - a patron at a Barstool Sports bar managed to pull off a full-on hate crime via bottle service and Dave Portnoy has some choice words for him. Also, Blake Lively is dressing like a cartoon detective again. Huge week. Follow us on Instagram @Laurasogar and @mae_planert and you can watch full video of the episodes on YouTube
