1. "The focus is on expressing the energy of the sound of all this activity -- the sounds of the traffic, of people and kids enjoying their time. The resonant frequencies are drawn out from this rich palette of sounds to create musical tones that build and shimmer along with with the movement of the recording."

This is TRT World's Daily News Brief for Monday, December 18th. *) Israel kills 90 in refugee camp as its attacks continue in Gaza The Israeli army has launched deadly attacks across Gaza, hitting a refugee camp in the north, a hospital in the south and killing a teenage girl who had lost her leg in an earlier strike, according to Palestinian officials, media and eyewitnesses. Israeli strikes on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza killed 90 Palestinians, Gaza's health ministry spokesman told Reuters. Another missile attack on a house belonging to the Shehab family killed 24 people, Hamas Aqsa radio said. “We believe the number of dead people under the rubble is huge but there is no way to remove the rubble and recover them because of the intensity of Israeli fire,” the spokesman said by telephone. *) Voters in Chile reject draft constitution, election officials say Chilean voters have rejected a proposed new constitution drafted by a conservative-led committee, election officials said, meaning the charter imposed during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet will remain in force. With 99 percent of referendum ballots counted, the “against” option prevailed with 55.75 percent of the vote, compared to 44.25 percent in favour, according to electoral service Servel just hours after voting ended around 6:00 pm on Sunday (2100 GMT). The latest version of a new proposed constitution was overseen by the far-right opposition Republican Party after voters roundly rejected a progressive draft in September 2022 that attempted to enshrine environmental protections and the right to elective abortion. *) Iraqis vote in first provincial elections for a decade Iraqis vote to choose their provincial councils, the first such election in a decade. Ballots will be held in 15 of Iraq's provinces but not in the other three which are Kurdish and operate under a separate autonomous system. The election is seen as a key test for the government of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al Sudani. He rose to power just over a year ago on the back of a parliamentary coalition and has focused on developing public services and infrastructure ravaged by decades of conflict. *) Serbia President Vucic says his party won parliamentary polls Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic has said his party had won a commanding victory in parliamentary elections, extending the populist outfit's rule in the Balkan country amid accusations of foul play by the opposition. Official results were set to be announced late on Monday but the president appeared certain of his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS)'s performance, just hours after the polls closed on Sunday. Even though Vucic was not personally on the ballot in Sunday's parliamentary and local elections, the contest was largely seen as a referendum on his government. And finally… *) 14th TRT International Documentary Awards held in Istanbul The 14th TRT International Documentary Awards, organised by Türkiye's national broadcaster TRT, took place in Istanbul between December 14-17 with screenings of national and international documentaries and the participation of expert guests in the field. Throughout the four-day event, documentaries competing in various categories and special selection films were shown to audiences, contributing to enriching the documentary climate in Türkiye. “The Lens of Democracy” received the Best Film Award in the International Category, while “Flaneur” was chosen as the Best Film in the National Professional Category. Speaking at the ceremony, TRT General Manager Mehmet Zahid Sobaci said the event is the largest documentary film festival in Türkiye. He pointed out that it is impossible to think independently about the history and adventure of documentaries and documentary making in Türkiye without TRT “because TRT, since its establishment, has become the school of documentary making.” And that's your daily news brief from TRT World. You heard it here first! Our latest film idea is The Hiker and the Flaneur, which finds an urban explorer, like Renoir and Degas, who ventures to a small Catskills town with only a very limited sidewalk area. Reclaim the Night! Lou Zucker über das Patriarchat im Dunkeln. For the past ten or so years, indie magazines have been booming. As digital media platforms relentlessly chase clicks and smartphones paralyze our focus, a host of fresh print publications are taking a slower and more measured approach. _____ Guided by the tenets of the “slow media” movement, this new breed of publishers focuses on correcting the pace of media creation and consumption in the digital age. They advocate for alternative ways of making and using media that are more intentional, longer lasting, better written and designed, more ethical—all delivered in a tactile, bespoke package. _____ In this episode, you're going to encounter magazine brands you've never heard of: Avaunt, Flaneur, Mondial, Monocle, and Port—and, one of the great success stories of the indie boom, Kinfolk. Born in Portland, Oregon, in the early 20-teens with the tagline, “A Guide for Small Gatherings,” the magazine was often referred to, dismissively, as “Martha Stewart for millennials.” _____ But, in recent years, Kinfolk, like its millennial stans, has grown up. The mag moved its offices to Copenhagen. They created a clothing brand, licensed local editions in South Korea, China, Japan, and Russia, published a series of coffee table books, and, in the ultimate act of adulting, launched a magazine for “people with kids.” _____ But one of the best moves they made was hiring today's guest, the incredibly talented British designer, Alex Hunting. _____ Intentional or not, Hunting is a practitioner of slow design. His instinct for space allocation and pacing eliminates those outdated, overwhelming TL;DR sections. His stunning magazine pages are subtle, spare, and expertly crafted. Perfect for indie magazines, which is good, because that's pretty much all he does. _____ We'll talk to Alex about why, at age 35, he's so bullish on print, why his university experience didn't go as planned, and how a pair of mentors literally changed his life. _____ And, if all of this bores you, well, there's plenty of talk about houseplants.

For many people, the emblematic scene from Todd Philipps ' The Joker is Joaquin Phoenix 's iconic dance on the steps. If you've seen the film, however, you know that Arthur Fleck dances throughout the entire movie. What does it mean? Sprinkled throughout the violence, the struggles to figure out how we can better help support mental health struggles, and the overwhelming feelings of detachment and anger, we find an individual in Arthur Fleck who wants to be good, to do good in the world. However, he is trapped in virtually all aspects of his life. It is only in dance that Fleck / The Joker seems to be his most free. But, with that freedom comes choice, and when Fleck becomes the Joker, he makes the choice to bring chaos and destruction upon the world. We cannot turn a blind eye to this. Trying to figure out where the line is between empathy for what Fleck is experiencing and disavowing his move toward destruction is incredibly difficult, which is why we're having a discussion about this film with our guest: Liz Wayson. Liz has written a wonderful article on The Joker entitled, "“Walking and Dancing in Gotham City: The Marginalized Flaneur, Mental Health Activism, and the Spectacle of Violence in Todd Phillips's Joker." Scott discovers the French word that describes what he and Tom have always been. A Flaneur, walking the streets as urban spectators, marveling at the architecture and people along the way. And there is no English translation that does flaneur justice. So when anyone makes a derisive comment like, “So you just walked around all day?”, we can tell them we're doing what Degas, Renoir and Cartier-Bresson and other men and women have done since the mid 1800's in Paris. And when they hear that, they'll just slink away. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tom-saunders9/support
