June 13, 2024 On June 13, 2024, during the live Broadcast from the National Conference on Black Cooperative Agenda titled "Economic Wealth: Power of Black Cooperative Enterprises,” hosted by the Network for Developing Conscious Communities, Vernon Oakes interviews Mayor Melvin Carter, Christina Nicholson and Jessica James. The conference was a continuation of the legacy work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In a recent interview on Everything Co-op Ron Hantz, president of NDCC states, "We take no credit for the title of the conference. Actually it was initiated by the Poor Peoples Deveopment Foundation (PPDF) which came about in 1968 during Dr. King's efforts to bring attention to the poverty of Black and poor folks in the Country. It was an organization started by Cornielus "Cornbread" Givens and Bayard Rustin to bring about education about cooperatives in communities that were needing economic opportunities, as well as bringing food to those communities as well." Ironically, the mission of the foundation was to create cooperatives. In fact, the PPDF was instrumental in moving the National Consumer Cooperative Bank Act in 1978, which led to the creation the National Consumer Cooperative Bank, today known as the National Cooperative Bank (NCB). The act aimed to encourage the development of new and existing cooperatives. The Network for Developing Conscious Communities is honored to carry on its legacy, especially in addressing concerns related to poverty, affordability, and access to healthy food. Melvin Carter is the 46th mayor of the City of Saint Paul, Minnesota's Capital City. A fourth-generation Saint Paul resident, Mayor Carter leads with an unapologetic equity agenda. Since taking office in 2018, his accomplishments include raising the city's minimum wage; tripling free program in rec centers; eliminating late fines in public libraries; reestablishing an Affordable Housing Trust Fund; expanding immigrant & refugee support resources; and launching an Office of Financial Empowerment. One signature initiative is CollegeBound Saint Paul, Mayor Carter's plan to start every child born in the city with a $50 College Savings Account, which started January 1, 2020. Jessica James is Assistant VP of Community Reinvestment and Loan Advisor at Associated Bank; Jessica thrives on cultivating partnerships and addressing strategic financing needs. Additionally, she holds leadership positions in various organizations, including board roles at Network for Developing Conscious Communities (NDCC), NAREB TC, City of Lakes Community Land Trust and Rondo Community Land Trust, where she champions affordable homeownership and economic development initiatives. Christina Nicholson is a Cooperative Finance Developer for the Worker Owner Initiative, which is part of Nexus' Community Wealth Building Strategy. In this role she supports both start-ups and existing businesses and understands the role that Worker Ownership can play in successful owner retirement strategies as well as improved workplace cultures for teams. She has been working in cooperatives in Minnesota for 25 years in a wide range of roles, from front of house retail to construction to cooperative consulting. In all of her endeavors, she has been working to connect communities to each other through a common cause.

SUMMARY Back in 2018 the Kendeda Fund, a philanthropic foundation based in Atlanta, decided to make a series of big bets in areas that were both critical and timely. One of those areas was employee ownership and the investment made by Kendeda was historic. Over 5 years a total of $24 million dollars was provided to 4 employee owner support organizations. Those organizations include The Evergreen Cooperatives Fund for Employee Ownership, ICA Group, Nexus Community Partners, and Project Equity. The investment was made with four broad goals in mind – grow the number of employee-owned businesses, use patient capital to leverage investments, strengthen core elements of the employee ownership ecosystem, and amplify media coverage of employee ownership. Upon entering the 5th year of the grant, Kendeda contracted with the Ohio Employee Ownership Center to carry out a reflection process that looked back on what these four organizations where able to achieve, assess what they learned, and identify future actions that would further develop and expand employee ownership in the US. The reflection process relied on numerous forms of data collection including in-person meetings, long form one on one interviews with grantees, selling owners, and new employee owners, analysis of transition data, and comparisons of the four grantees models for transitioning companies to employee ownership. The culmination of our findings was then published in a narrative report that drew on the insights of all stakeholders involved, which we encourage you to read. However, like all reports, we could not include every bit of information we gathered. But we strongly felt it necessary to provide grantee organizations with the space to explain, in their own words, how and why they do the work they do, how Kendeda's investment helped them expand their impact, and where they see their work going in the future. So, this interview with Christina Nicholson and Paty Viafara of Nexus Community Partners, is one in a series of interviews we carried out with organization that received support from the Kendeda Fund. Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies
Are you looking to grow your agency while maintaining a work-life balance? Not sure who and when to hire to achieve your agency goals and not work yourself to death? You can find the balance and reach your goals when you hire the right team. That's what today's guest learned when she figured out how to offload the things she doesn't love and focus on what she does love about being an agency owner. As a former TV reporter turned PR agency owner, she shares her journey of growing her agency and her strategies for increasing profit while decreasing workload. Although she used to default to controlling sales and all communication with clients, she eventually became addicted to building a team. Now as CEO, her day-to-day activities focus more on creating content that will bring organic leads to the agency. She shares her strategies for finding the right people to achieve her agency goals and wants to help agency owners understand the importance of overcoming the hurdle of marketing yourself as an agency owner in order to build your brand. Christina Nicholson is a former TV reporter and anchor who got into PR and is now the owner and CEO of Media Maven. Christina's first job after leaving TV was working at an agency for 6 months. Her agency experience wasn't the best so she decided to leave and started to work as a “professional freelancer”. From there, she slowly started building a team and, before she knew it, she now had an agency. Her agency gives people exposure in the media without spending on ads. Christina also has an online course that helps people DIY if they don't have a budget for an agency. In this episode, we'll discuss: Reducing the owner's workload and building a team. Building your personal brand to secure organic leads for your agency. Getting out of sales by establishing your role upfront. Reducing the Agency Owner's Workload and Building a Team For Christina, the scariest part of building an agency was hiring people. She had a personal brand as a freelancer that she carefully curated with impeccable work ethics. Of course, she was nervous about bringing other people into that dynamic. However, by this time she was working around the clock, and was stressed out, and it was clearly time to get other people to help her. She initially had to force herself to back off and allow her employees to do their jobs. Eventually, she became addicted to building a team. The big change really came once she hired a person who could essentially replace her functions with clients. This way, she stopped being the middleman between clients and her team. This person was in charge of making sure that both clients and team members had everything they needed to be successful. At this point, she realized she was still making money and didn't have a lot to do, which was amazing. Securing Organic Leads through Content For her first hires, Christina started posting in Facebook groups with contacts from her time working in media. This led to a few key hires that later made valuable referrals as she grew her team. For her most valuable hire to date, she was surprised to find this person in her personal network. At the time, she didn't quite know she needed a director of operations. Once she was clear on what she needed, someone suggested she just post it on her personal Facebook to see what came up. Luckily, the right person quickly answered and she was able to fill the role that would change the way she ran her agency. It wasn't a smooth process at first. Christina would continually answer emails before anyone else could. This is common for agency owners who are so used to doing things by themselves. However, it defeats the purpose of bringing on a team. Once she backed off and started delegating and empowering her team, she saw real change. When it was time for her role at the agency to change, she started to study how she got the clients she had. She realized most of them came to her organically after listening to her podcast or her posts on LinkedIn. It was time to focus on creating more content, building her newsletter, and recording her podcast. How to stop wasting time. Christina used to waste a lot of time on potential clients who had no idea what they wanted, no budget, and unclear goals. Now she dedicates time to qualifying her leads, asking for their budget and goals, and afterwards refers them to a team member who will be their point of contact. Leveraging Your Personal Brand to Promote Your Agency's Expertise A lot of agency owners resist the idea of becoming the face of their brand and start creating content. They feel this will create the expectation that clients will be working directly with them in their campaigns. This is not necessarily the case and Christina has found the best way to get that message through is by being very clear about the expectations once they sign on. There are many benefits to building your brand like opportunities for contributed articles, podcast interviews, and quotes. These will all help you reach people and attract new clients who see you as an authority and want to work with your agency. There has to be an expert behind the brand and agency owners should be that expert. Why do people want to be a part of Oprah's favorite things or work with Vaynermedia? It's because of Oprah and Gary. It all goes back to the personal brand. And clients know when they sign with Vaynermedia they're not going to work with Gary himself, but that his team has been chosen and trained by him. Getting the Owner Out of Sales By Establishing Their Role Upfront One of the biggest concerns for agency owners wanting to get out of sales is that clients will want to work directly with them. If clients come to know your agency through your content, won't they expect to be working with you every step of the way? For Christina, it's about setting expectations early. If a client specifically asks if they'll be working with her, she explains that won't be the case and talks about the option of hiring her as a freelancer at a much higher rate. However, she's very upfront about why it is in their best interest to hire her as an agency. By hiring the agency, they'll get a team of specialists working on their brand while she oversees everything. If they hire her as a freelancer, they'll just get her. Building the best sales team. When it comes to her sales team, Christina prefers to hire people who used to work as publicists, at newsrooms or book publishing agencies. They have the right expertise and the stories to close those sales. It takes a lot of the stress off for her as an agency owner. Getting Over Discomfort to Market Yourself Effectively Are you afraid of appearing "too loud" if you start to market yourself? Maybe you're uncomfortable with putting yourself out there. Remember that people need to know about you to do business with you. You have to be known to get leads and translate them into some kind of sale. It's something Christina strongly encourages business owners to get over or else risk oblivion. Furthermore, that fear could stem from comparison with people online who are actually making false promises and displaying a lifestyle they don't live. For Christine, the biggest mistake people make is believing they don't have a big enough team or presence to get coverage. Nobody cares how big your business is or how much money you're making. It's all about having a story people will enjoy. Do You Want to Transform Your Agency from a Liability to an Asset? Earned media is not about immediate ROI, because earned media is forever. So think of this as a long-term investment, not a get-rich-quick scheme. Media Maven Christina Nicholson has a lot to say about public relations. More than anything, she has valuable advice for entrepreneurs - on how to promote themselves authentically, confidently and effectively. Christina Nicholson is an award-winning television journalist, course creator, public speaker, podcaster and Founder of the PR agency Media Maven. Christina and her Media Maven team work intimately and exclusively with a select number of high-ticket clients, bringing their public relations goals to fruition through hard work and strategic ad placement. Besides her agency's work with clients, Christina has used her decades of experience in media to create a suite of products for business owners, with various budgets and goals. Entrepreneurs can take a mini bootcamp on her website to improve their PR skills or invest in the Media Mentoring Program course for a full education on how, when, where, and why to use PR strategies to their full advantage. Christina has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, the Huffington Post, Time, Yahoo!, PR Daily, All Business Experts, on CNN, WTVJ in Miami, WPTV in West Palm Beach, News 12 in New York City, and in many other media outlets. Now on The Business of You, Christina shares her industry's best-kept secrets to help us all get recognized by the right people, at the right time. Treat your business like a business When Christina decided to go out on her own, she thought it would be easy. She started an Upwork account, jumped on LinkedIn and worked around the clock. But for two years, she made herself miserable - until she invested in herself! After exhausting her energy, Christina hired a business coach, who told her to treat her business like an actual…business. Christina had been wearing all the hats - sales person, service provider, marketer and beyond. For the first time, Christina took a step back and considered the future of her company like a CEO. Her coach advised her to hire a team, thinking big-picture and take on more seasoned clients. So many entrepreneurs are guilty of this. In your own business, are you thinking like a CEO? What actionable goals could you set for your business and who could you hire to help you achieve them? Stop getting in your own way When asked for her biggest piece of advice for entrepreneurs, Christina responded immediately with this: Stop getting in your own way. Founders, particularly women, think that they need to wait for perfect conditions to market their businesses. They make excuses and put off PR and media until they think they've achieved success - when their website is perfect, they have a team and they're making “enough” money. But Christina advises: This is backwards! When it comes to PR, she reminds us that it's all about generating new opportunities for growth. Get in front of people before you're “ready,” and big things will happen in your business! Share your wins, everywhere Christina has noticed a bizarre trend in the world of PR, and she's here to encourage you to avoid this popular mistake. After getting PR coverage, she notices that a lot of businesses don't share it. They forget to send out an email about it, make a social media post about it, post it on their website, or even mention it beyond their personal circle of friends. Nobody knows they were on TV, and they don't help get the word out. Avoid this popular PR mistake. If someone promotes you - on their channel, podcast, in their newsletter or magazine, etc - share it far and wide. This is a great opportunity to ask yourself - where was I featured recently, and who have I told about it? Who could I tell about it? Who needs to know about this? Make sure you're celebrating your wins, because it will ultimately catapult you to business success. Quotes “I said, you know what? This is a service-based industry, so I don't need a lot of money to get started. I'll just go on LinkedIn and Upwork and get my own clients! I did that for two years, by myself…and I was freaking miserable.” “It was tough because I was wearing all of the hats. I was doing it all myself - I was doing the marketing, servicing the clients, I was the salesperson. It wasn't until I hired my first business coach that I actually learned about business!” “Everything I do is under the PR umbrella. But there are different products and services depending on where you are in your business, and how much time or money you want to spend making this a part of your marketing strategy.” “I'm the kind of manager I would have wanted. I don't check up on them. As long as you're hitting those goals, I don't care. I don't care what you wear, when you work, where you went to college, how many hours you worked. Is the client happy, and are you happy? Perfect! We just do our jobs. We're all adults. We don't need to be babysat. We just get things done.” “With our clients, we don't have a whole onboarding thing for weeks. We have one call - what are your goals? What do you want to see? What do you want? What is the short term goal and end goal? Then we go and execute that day. All this talking, planning and researching - it has a place! But in PR when we're trying to get you coverage, we don't waste time.” “We give our clients updates every week. It's so important to send them an email every week - this is what we did, this is what worked, this is what didn't work. We think we're gonna go this way next week and we need your help with XYZ.” “Stop telling yourself you're not ready for it. A lot of women do this. They make all kinds of excuses. You're putting the cart before the horse. The way you get more money, a bigger brand, more leads and a bigger email list - you get this by being in front of people. You get the attention first, then the leads come in. So many people get this backwards.” “After you get coverage, please - share it, and share it everywhere! It blows my mind how many people get media coverage and don't put it on their website, don't post it to social media, don't send it to their email list.” Links mentioned in this episode: Are you ready to finally see your name in popular media outlets like Forbes, Inc., and Fast Company? There's a right way and a wrong to pitch for those elusive free publicity moments. Personal branding is the key to setting yourself up for personal and professional success. In today's episode of the Be Better Podcast, Donald is joined by PR pro and owner of Media Maven, Christina Nicholson, to discuss the importance of personal branding, regardless of your industry. No matter your business, everybody should build a brand. The brand you build makes people want to work with you, and it encourages the trust and rapport that makes deals move forward. If you go to any niche, industry, or city, you'll find personal branding dictating purchases in that area and generating more leads. You can do the same! Types of content that build brands: There are three types of media: your personal media and content (which you have absolute control over), advertising, and earned media. In terms of personal media, you should have a website as your homebase, with a blog to share specialty content. You can then repurpose that blog into social media. Give your audience value to make them want to see more. Add CTAs in everything, even if the CTA is just to like, comment, and follow. Podcasts are huge for building personal brands. The intent of someone listening to a podcast is more engagement-driven than scrolling on the phone. Milestones to look for when making a personal brand. It'll be different for everyone. If the goal is organic growth from an online blog, your KPIs could be tied to your Google Analytics. For a podcast host, it could be the number of downloads of show episodes. Ask yourself, “why do I want this?” Make sure your efforts and milestones support that goal. Grab the low-hanging content fruit: Determine where you like being and where your audience is. Then, balance the two. Be consistent. Consider using a scheduler to post content to ensure you have consistent content for people to consume. Consider posting the same thing multiple times, because viewers see millions of things each day, and might need the reminder. Have branded images that show what you do. Don't just take professional headshots (though they're always good to have.) Have candid or action shots that demonstrate your personality. If you've been thinking about ways to grow your business, you may be looking at sales funnels, social media posts, TikTok, paid ads, and email campaigns. All of these are legit methods to employ in your strategy for growth, but there is one strategy you'll want to give more attention to after this episode. Public relations (PR) is about managing how others see you and your brand. It's about a strategic communication process that gets you in front of the right people which makes growing your business much easier. “You need PR to get big, you need PR to make money, you need exposure because people can't do business with you if they don't know about you.” Maven Media founder, Christina Nicholson, was a TV reporter and anchor with lots of experience being pitched and given pitches. Her PR skills have landed her on podcasts such as Bossbabe, Entrepreneurs on Fire, Smart and Passive Income with Pat Flynn and so many more. Today we're talking about: The power of PR placement for your business Using social media to pitch When and how to follow up on your pitch How to pitch podcast shows specifically Why PR is about relationship building and connection “Advertising is saying you're good. PR is getting someone else to say you're good.” Putting yourself out there is scary business, but not growing your business is a failing business and it requires maximum exposure. Guesting on podcasts, contributing to articles and local news appearances can do wonders for your business and your brand's credibility. Christina unloads so much value in this interview that you'll want to take notes and start implementing her strategies right away! Here are a few tips Christina shares that are sure to get you noticed and in front of your audience faster. TIP #1: Make it super easy on the person you are pitching to. TIP #2: Create a Media List using a spreadsheet. Create a different tab for each angle you can pitch and start collecting podcasts for that angle with the contact information you need to submit a pitch. Work this spreadsheet for pitches and cycle through with a different topic each time. TIP #3: Write subject lines people will open by making them short, catchy, and relevant to the person and what they do. TIP #4: To pitch a podcast, be very specific about what you do and the tangible results and outcomes for the audience. Include personal elements that touch on their industry or one of the previous episodes TIP #5: Block 2 hours every week to build your media list. Include people that are writing about your industry, active podcast platforms that speak to that industry or genre, and remember to follow and comment on their social media channels. Christina is incredibly raw and candid about the PR business and has a no B.S. approach to the content and information she shares and teaches to others. If you want to check out the exact pitch she submitted to Pat Flynn to get on his podcast, head over to Podcast Clout.
