Episode 80: The Future of InclusionWith Kenji YoshinoAvailable October 28, 2025In this time of rapidly evolving law and opinion around terms like diversity, equity, and inclusion, what is the work of school leaders who believe in building stronger, more connected, more inclusive communities? Legal scholar and author Kenji Yoshino is the author of a forthcoming book called How Equality Wins: A New Vision for an Inclusive America. He joins host Morva McDonald to talk about the legal precedents of the past, the shifting culture of the present, and the strategies that can secure the future of equitable practice.Guests: Kenji YoshinoResources, Transcript, and Expanded Show NotesIn This Episode:“I think lawyers are actually terrible at lots of things, but we're actually rather good at saying, yes, we disagree, but you're not my enemy, right? You're my debate opponent, and you're actually my friend on the other side. And so let's actually behave as if, let's carry ourselves in that way and let the best ideas win.”“I think that the younger generation has a greater understanding not of who they are, but, or not just of who they are, but also the skills that are going to be needed for us to survive, much less thrive, in a multicultural society that is much more global, much more diverse. And so the capacity to speak across difference, to work across difference, to bond across difference is going to be a critical skill for us going forward. And that's the set of skills that are embodied within DEI.”“So the question I always ask is like, it's really easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment and to get blown back and forth as the pendulum swings back and forth, right? But rather than doing that, like just sit in your values and think five years from now, who will I want to have been in this moment when everyone was telling me like cave or do this or do that? Like what is the kind of values based decision that I can make here that will make me proud of myself five years from now, rather than proud of myself tomorrow or proud of myself next week?”Related Episodes: 77; 66; 64; 62; 37; 30; 17; 7 Hosted on Acast. In this episode of The InEVitable by MotorTrend, hosts Ed Loh and Jonny Lieberman go hands-on with one of the most surprising EV conversions ever attempted — the Toyota AE86 Levin BEV, an electric restomod created by Lexus Electrified Development Division. Joining them are Kenji Arai, Chief Engineer at Lexus Electrified, and Toshi Hayama, JDM legend and translator, to discuss why Lexus chose to electrify one of Japan's most iconic lightweight sports cars and what it means for the future of driving fun. This isn't a gimmick — it's an EV with a *manual transmission*, real gear shifts, simulated 4A-GE engine sound, and the soul of the 1980s drifting icon. From the technical challenges of reusing Lexus hybrid parts to how feedback from this prototype could inform future BEV sports cars, this is an inside look at Toyota and Lexus' electrified philosophy for enthusiasts.

DNA Genetics & Bodhi: World Famous Breeders Join Forces, Secret Strains, Rare GeneticsCountless fans of FSOTD flood our DMs and comment sections demanding the return of “the fire,” “real OGs,” “the gas,” and/or classic cultivars from the 90s-2000s, which are the building blocks of the exotics we know today. In response to this demand, we brought on two absolute legends in terms of genetic legacy, preservation, and global recognition for the work they've made and continue to make to answer some of these questions.Blackleaf is joined in our LA studio by John of Green Bodhi, and once again, by Don and Aaron of DNA Genetics to discuss everything surrounding classic cultivars that many have assumed gone forever, why purple herb wasn't and still isn't fire, how Kenji cracked the original seeds on what would become “Pre-98 Bubba,” what goes into tissue culture and how Phylos is stacking up the world's genetic library, and so many more stories surrounding legendary cuts such as the lore surrounding DNA's Banana OG crosses which have literally changed the hash game.Legacy comes up a lot in this podcast, and how you go about achieving it. How do you reach a point where your Strawberry Banana is being used as the base for someone's pheno hunt intended for washing? You'll hear Don of DNA Genetics throw around a lot of strong claims during this pod, such as the time to create a true legacy brand being behind us, as well as how hype smokers that only blow Runtz or LCG crosses don't even know what they want these days.Another prevalent topic throughout this episode is the sheer HEAT of John aka Green Bodhi's herb on the table, none of which you'll note is purple, how he grows it in Oregon, and his laundry list of “OG” and/or questionable growing techniques that seem to bring him 100% germination and time-honored yields. His background story is one that you definitely can't miss, not only in terms of free game, but also sheer intrigue and entertainment. Throughout the episode, you'll see Blackleaf flash around the extremely limited, yet recent, seed collab between Green Bodhi and DNA Genetics that they both claim you can get from them simply by hitting the DMs. The future is looking bright when you consider that two world-renowned heavyweights of legacy breeding and cultivation are currently joining forces to ensure the classics stay around and that someone keeps breeding new innovations on the iconic cuts that time might soon forget. One thing's for sure, by the end of this episode, you'll be fiending for Dog Walker, Chem, Skunk, Kush, Afghani, and Haze crosses like back in the day. It seems like every season of 'The Bear' is subject to more scrutiny and analysis than any play by The Bard himself,  Shakespeare. Every scene and every character's persona is being sifted through like cake flour. So like many serious eaters I know, I got hooked on the Bear. I have binge-watched all four seasons, including the latest, which I watched in two sittings. On a previous episode of Special Sauce I discussed the first season of 'The Bear' with Kenji Lopez-Alt and The New Yorker's Helen Rosner. As food writers, and in Kenji's case as someone who's cooked in restaurants like the one depicted in the series, they offered invaluable perspective. And though I have been devouring all the informed takes on season 4, one struck me as being particularly incisive and just spot on. That one is by James Poniewozik, the chief TV critic of The New York Times which means according to his NYT bio, that he has the largest beat in the world. And that beat now includes joining the conversation on Special Sauce.  Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

Countless fans of FSOTD flood our DMs and comment sections demanding the return of “the fire,” “real OGs,” “the gas,” and/or classic cultivars from the 90s-2000s, which are the building blocks of the exotics we know today. Each vignette pits human skill and courage against the alien hunters, culminating in a thrilling convergence on the Predator homeworld, where the trio must unite to survive a gladiatorial showdown. With razor-sharp painterly animation, inventive Predator tech, and a sweeping score, Killer of Killers deepens Predator lore while delivering visceral, globe-spanning sci-fi action.

Join Greg Alba, Aaron Alexander, Tara Erickson & John Humphrey as they embark on the globe- (and time-) hopping thrills of Predator: Killer of Killers, Hulu's 2025 animated anthology co-directed by Dan Trachtenberg and Josh Wassung. Set before the events of the original 1987 film, this three-chapter saga pits deadly Yautja hunters against unmatched human warriors in Viking-era Scandinavia, feudal Japan, and World War II Florida—before culminating in a gladiatorial showdown on the Predator homeworld!! In “The Shield,” Viking raider Ursa (Lindsay LaVanchy, The Chosen One) leads her people in a bloody revenge quest around 800 AD—only to discover her “monster from legend” is the Predator, whom she confronts in a brutal axe-and-shield duel. “The Sword” follows Kenji (Louis Ozawa Changchien, Ip Man)—a cunning ninja seeking vengeance against his samurai brother—until he faces a stealthy Yautja amid the cherry-blossom-draped battlements of feudal Japan. Finally, “The Bullet” thrusts Torres (Rick Gonzalez, Miami Vice) into tense aerial combat during WWII in Florida, as he outmaneuvers a Predator from his cockpit in a pulse-pounding dogfight. Voice of Predator veteran Michael Biehn (Aliens, The Terminator) adds gravitas as the wily Yautja champion who orchestrates the final Predator-only arena match, where Ursa, Kenji, and Torres must band together to survive the ultimate test. Predator: Killer of Killers elevates the series by exploring untold eras and showcasing three distinct fighting styles—all while pushing animation boundaries with dynamic frame-rate shifts and 3D/2D hybrid textures. Whether you're here for Viking gore, ninja stealth, or WWII aerial warfare, this anthology delivers some of the most searched-for Predator action in decades. Building Trust with AI in Customer Support  Shep interviews Kenji Hayward, Senior Director of Customer Support at Front. He talks about Front's The State of Service Expectations report and how customer expectations are evolving around AI, response times, loyalty, and what businesses can do to meet and exceed those expectations.  This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more:    What are the top expectations customers have from brands? What role does AI play in enhancing customer interactions and support?  How many bad experiences does it take before a customer stops doing business with a company?  Why is it important for companies to use their products?  Is there a difference between how businesses and customers perceive good response times?  Top Takeaways:    Be a customer of your own business. One of the best ways to understand and improve a product is by using it yourself. When team members, including managers and leaders, act as customers, they feel what real customers experience, both the good and the bad.    The State of Service Expectations by Front found that it only takes three bad experiences before 59% of customers decide to leave and find a different company to do business with. This leaves almost half of the customers who leave after 2 or even 1 negative experience from your brand. This means every interaction counts.  The very first interaction can set the tone for their whole experience. Many companies are now using AI to handle their first contact, so it must be friendly, fast, and accurate.  Transparency is essential in building trust. Companies using AI or chatbots should always be upfront with customers. People appreciate being told whether they are chatting with a human or a digital assistant, and that when the technology isn't working, there is an easy way to reach a real person.  Many customers (39%) like it when companies remember their preferences or past purchases and use that information to offer better service. However, some customers (57%) also worry about how much personal data is shared with AI or other technology. Finding the right balance between personalization and privacy is important so customers can feel comfortable and safe with how their information is being used.  Customers want an amazing experience, even if it costs extra. The State of Service Expectations found that 60% of customers would be willing to pay more for faster response times. Our customer service and experience research echoes this, where 59% of customers say customer service is more important than price.   AI has gotten much better, faster, and cheaper in the last few years. It's easy to get caught up in the latest technology or the fanciest software. But no matter how advanced your tech is, it won't matter if you don't have the foundations of good customer service, like empathy, transparency, speed, and convenience.  Plus, Shep and Kenji discuss how much customers are willing to wait for email, chat, or phone responses before they start to lose patience with your brand. Tune in!  Quote:   "Bad experiences can turn the customer off and make you lose their loyalty. In this day and age, where customers have many options on brands they want to work with, the role of customer support teams has become really amplified."    About:    Kenji Hayward is the Senior Director of Customer Support at Front. Join thousands of other listeners on our Substack, The Foodletter!   In this insightful episode, Brooke sits down with the multi-hyphenate culinary voice J. Kenji López-Alt to discuss his unconventional journey from biology student to architecture major to professional cook—and ultimately, one of the most influential food writers of our time. Kenji opens up about the roots of The Food Lab, the success of The Wok, his love of food science, and how personal experiences shaped his approach to recipe development. From peeling 1,000 eggs in a data-driven experiment to publishing a children's book about expanding food preferences, Kenji's blend of curiosity, humor, and rigor shines throughout. He also shares his recent journey to sobriety, offering a powerful and honest reflection on what it means to live with intention.   Whether you're a professional cook, home chef, or food lover, this conversation will leave you inspired to explore, experiment, and cook with greater understanding.   Key Takeaways [01:22] Early Influences: Despite not growing up food-obsessed, Kenji's culinary passion emerged during college and blossomed through unexpected restaurant work. [07:26] The Food Lab Origin: A freelance $30 article on boiling eggs sparked the wildly successful Food Lab series and cookbook. [10:15] Finding His Voice: Inspired by Mr. Wizard and Jacques Pépin, Kenji combines education and entertainment to empower readers. [15:56] Testing with Integrity: Kenji conducted a 1,000-egg experiment with volunteer testers to scientifically identify the easiest method for peeling boiled eggs. [19:12] Behind the Cookbooks: The Food Lab began as a 300-page contract and grew into a 958-page tome—followed by The Wok, which evolved from a single missing chapter. [26:53] Favorite Recipes: From a chickpea-spinach stew to his mom's Mapo Tofu, Kenji highlights family-friendly, simple, and flexible favorites. [31:45] Every Night Is Pizza Night: His children's book was born from a desire to teach openness toward food and push back against “best recipe” culture. [41:00] On Sobriety: Kenji shares his deeply personal journey toward sobriety, how alcohol once shaped his decisions, and why he chose to speak publicly to help others.   Notable Quotes (9:52) “I wanted to write the kind of cookbook I wish I had when I was learning to cook.” (13:05) “We take food seriously, but not ourselves.” (33:00) “Pizza might be your favorite food, but is it the best food for every occasion?” (44:57) “Addiction thrives in isolation. Sobriety thrives in connection.”   Resources Check out Kenji's Patreon and YouTube channel Alcohol, we need to talk on YouTube The Food Lab: Better Home Cooking Through Science The Wok: Recipes and Techniques Every Night Is Pizza Night Connect with Kenji on Instagram Follow Female Foodie on Instagram

The alcohol, says J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, came about in young adulthood, when it solved persistent social anxiety and made him the life of the party. As Kenji found tremendous success in food writing and restaurateuring, he found that he couldn't really make it through the day without downing between two and five drinks. This wasn't hard to pull off in the food business, surrounded by booze and a culture that heartily encouraged its consumption. Kenji found that, as is so often the case with mental health, that the reality of the condition didn't match the drunken messy stereotype: his work wasn't harmed, he had strong relationships and a family. It's just that he was an addict. Finally, just a few months ago and in his mid-40's, he decided to get sober. This episode marks the kick-off of the 2025 Max Fun Drive!
