'IT TAKES AN OCEAN NOT TO BREAK!!' Good Brother and Lil' Silky won't fuck us over this week as they take on the documentary 'Mistaken for Strangers', starring The National and Tom Berninger. The boys talk their favourite National songs and admire this hilarious, self-aware and (maybe?) true story.
The National’s Matt Berninger loves his family – so much so his first solo album, Serpentine Prison, is dedicated to his dad. It’s produced by the legendary Booker T. Jones and the story goes back to his father’s record collection, and, more recently, a classic argumentative Christmas family get-together. Matt also speaks to Greg Cochrane about 2020 – how lockdown has messed with his sleep patterns and reignited his love for fishing – plus his plans for another Mistaken For Strangers movie with his brother Tom (a TV version also in the works) and how he was clueless about his bandmates Aaron and Bryce Dessners' collaborative work on Taylor Swift’s Folklore album until the night before it dropped. Hailed by Michael Moore as "one of the best documentaries about a band that I've ever seen" and by Pitchfork as "the funniest, most meta music movie since SPINAL TAP," MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS is a truly hilarious, unusual, and moving film about two brothers, Matt and Tom Berninger. Matt, the lead singer of the critically acclaimed rock band The National, finally finds himself flush with success. His younger brother, Tom, is a loveable slacker - a filmmaker and metal-head still living with his parents in Cincinnati. On the eve of The National's biggest tour to date, Matt invites Tom to work for the band as a roadie, unaware of Tom's plan to film the entire adventure. What starts as a rock documentary soon becomes a surprisingly honest portrait of a charged relationship between two brothers, and the frustration of unfulfilled creative ambitions. Tom and Matt join us to talk about the pursuit of artistic aspirations, family and expectations.
Matt Berninger (Front man for the indie band The National) & Tom Berninger (Director/star of the new doc Mistake for Strangers) join Kevin & Steve for a two on two chew! They talk about making the new documentary Mistaken for Strangers, Matt's band The National, their relationship as brothers, Rob Halford & what's up next for the Berningers. Chew it!
Today, we debut the maDCap tour company. Please sign in with our meeter/greeter Jill Holbrook, and find your seat in the CRV (Certified Recording Vehicle) for a trip into the heart of the nation's capital. Your guides for today are David Ross & Dan Bloom, and our featured guest is Tom Berninger, director of the film "Mistaken for Strangers." His story goes like this... Two creative brothers, the elder of whom is wildly successful, looms large over the younger's creative ambitions. Matt Berninger is lead singer of 'The National,' they have six acclaimed albums and sold-out world tours. His younger brother Tom is trained as a filmmaker and while looking for his next step in life, jumped at the chance to serve as assistant tour manager on one of Matt's tours. Although the gig didn't exactly go as planned, Tom made the fortuitous decision to bring his camera along for the ride. After his unceremonious exit from his job on tour, Tom retreated first to the family home in Cincinnati, and then decamped at Matt's Brooklyn abode to craft the film 'Mistaken for Strangers.' Matt's wife Carin Besser deserves no small part of the credit. She's a former fiction editor at The New Yorker and lent an expert hand to Tom in shaping his melange of footage into a cohesive and compelling narrative. 'Mistaken for Strangers' is worth your time and it's out in theaters, On Demand and iTunes today. -- For more information on the film, visit http://MistakenForStrangersMovie.com Tom Berninger tweets at http://twitter.com/TomBerninger The film's twitter account is http://twitter.com/NationalMovie -- Meanwhile, 'The National' is going on tour in support of their sixth studio album "Trouble Will Find Me."
