Welcome back for the first episode of the fall season (technically). While there is no pumpkin spice to celebrate the episode, Justin brought a certified banger to the Filmed Obscura world. It's a film that he knew Chris would vibe on, and it's frankly one of the better religious cult movies in recent years. What movie you say? Why that is Riley Stearns' Faults. You guys don't want to miss this one. Grab those pumpkin spice brews and apple cider donuts friends. You won't be disappointed.

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are training hard for a fight to the death… with ourselves. We watched the Riley Stearns film from 2022, Dual.I'm glad that someone has finally tackled the subject of what will happen when our inevitable clones learn to live for themselves and want to take over our lives. This is our future and we're not considering it fully. On the one hand, it could end up being a peaceful and productive coexistence. On the other hand, it could end up being a dystopian hellscape we're hurtling toward with wanton abandon.Who here wants to take that gamble? Consider also that it will surely only be the richest among us who'll be able to afford this costly procedure. Do we really need more super wealthy people in this world? All I'm saying is this could be bad. We should set a limit on this kind of thing right now: create duplicate Karen Gillans and then stop. She's awesome and we could always use more of her.(Recorded on May 10, 2023)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Dual - The Movie Database (TMDB)Dual trailer - YouTubeKaren Gillan — The Movie Database (TMDB)Squid Game (TV Series 2021- ) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Sharknado | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutThe Purge (2013) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Yorgos Lanthimos — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Lobster (2015) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Parks and Recreation (TV Series 2009–2015) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Aaron Paul — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Karate Kid (1984) — The Movie Database (TMDB)The Graduate (1967) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile!Support the show

We complete our Riley Stearns journey with The Art of Self Defense. It's like Fight Club, but less likely to be taken the wrong way by men's rights activists. Or maybe it isn't? We have something-something on our mind: doubles. Specifically, unsolicited clones of yourself and all of the feelings that come with – including the clones. In this episode, Jenna and Veronica get into spoilery talk about Brandon Cronenberg's Infinity Pool (2023), Riley Stearns's Dual (2022) and Charlie McDowell's The One I Love (2014), all of which deal with a double dose of existential terror as it relates to clones and relationship drama. We review Dual (1922) on The Atomic Cinema Experiment. This is a sci fi movie podcast. In the entirety of human history, there has perhaps been no question more pertinent to our place in the universe than whether you could beat yourself in a fight. Dual, the latest film from Riley Stearns, explores a future where humanity has perfected the science of cloning, which sometimes results in some awkward situations that can only be solved through some good, old-fashioned fights to the death. So, basically, your average Thanksgiving dinner. Touching on themes of death, identity, and legacy, Dual invites audiences into a world of deadpan dialogue, strained relationships, and clone support payments, but provides no easy answers. Perhaps fittingly for a movie predicated on diametrically opposed motivations, your intrepid hosts find themselves at odds, presenting dual viewpoints on what might be one of the best films of the year or a worse cinematic crime than the Transformers movies depending on your point of view. So grab your crossbow, take a nice long drink of water (but only if offered by someone you trust with your life), and tune in to find out if Dual is the sci-fi hidden gem you've been looking for. An under-the-radar gem for those with off-kilter taste, the sci-fi film Dual is currently streaming on Hulu. Karen Gillan stars as a woman who commissions a clone of herself she must later try to kill when the clone threatens to take over her life. Riley Stearns has been making critically acclaimed indie movies for years now (Faults, The Art of Self-Defense) and this film clearly demonstrates a unique authorial voice with its bizarre but very engaging and effective tone. Pete Abeyta of the Middle Class Film Class podcast joins the show to discuss his pick for what to watch tonight (which I loved). Starring Karen Gillan and Aaron Paul, Dual follows a woman (Gillan) who has to fight a clone of herself to the death after she unexpectedly recovers from a terminal illness. Writer-director Riley Stearns discusses how he crafted the film's out-of-this-world sci-fi premise while staying grounded in reality: "I didn't want the world to feel like this futuristic sci-fi space. I wanted it to still feel like we could relate to it... It's like another alternate reality where everything's the same except for this... How do people interact with each other in a world where this procedure exists?" Stearns goes on to describe how he's evolved as a filmmaker since directing his first feature in 2014: "I would say that making Dual was the most confident and comfortable I've felt on set... There are times where you second guess yourself, and I still had those moments on Dual, but I think that knowing that your ideas have value, and trusting that, and trusting the people around you, I felt like Dual was just that experience that maybe... you wouldn't be the same person if you didn't learn those lessons." Dual is now available in select theaters and will be available On Demand on May 20. Don't forget to subscribe to the Write On Podcast on iTunes! Now available on Google Podcasts!
Originally, Riley Stearns wanted to be a musician, but as he started to visit sets, he knew screenwriting could be his “in” to filmmaking. Today, he's best known for being the writer-director of ‘The Art of Self-Defense' and ‘Dual.' In ‘The Art of Self-Defense,' Jesse Eisenberg stars as Casey, a young man who gets attacked on the streets and decides to join a local dojo. In ‘Dual,' Karen Gillan stars as Sarah, a woman opts to clone herself after she receives a terminal diagnoses, but once she survives her ill fate, she learns she must duel her clone to the death. In this interview, Riley talks about taking short films to festivals, mimicking Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright to learn the format of screenwriting, the blessing of misplaced confidence, and how he developed his dark comedic style. Riley Stearns' Dual crams a lot into 95 minutes but never feels overstuffed. It's listed as a Sci-Fi Thriller but is also pulls off a dry sense of humor really well thanks to lead Karen Gillan. Its biggest accomplishment is providing meta, societal commentary without ever feeling overly pretentious or preachy. The plot of the movie is very simple. Sarah (Gillan) is living a very depressing and unfulfilled life when she is diagnosed with a terminal illness. To ease the transition for her mother, she opts for the Replacement program that allows dying people to clone themselves so that their clone can continue on with their life. The problem is...Sarah makes a miraculous recovery and is no longer dying. By law her clone has the right to not be "decommissioned" and the way this is handled is by a televised duel to the death where the winner gets to live on as Sarah. This movie is less about some Hunger Games style duel and more about what it means to live a life. Stearns could have made this film really boring and uninteresting but instead uses awkward situations with hilarious dialogue to make this film a joy to watch. Gillan works well as Sarah (and Sarah's Double). Her last few films have had her really lean into her deadpan expressions and humor and its worked very well for each film. In this one, she's acting against herself in many cases and that just makes it even more impressive. It helps that her character is also very unlikeable. There are times when you start wanting to root for her double as you come to the realization that Sarah kinda sucks. Dual definitely is worth checking out. Again, despite the opening, don't expect some action-heavy scenes like Hunger Games or Battle Royale. It's definitely not that kind of film. Like what you hear? Riley Stearns is a writer, director, jiu jitsu brown belt, metal-head, gear dork, cold brew addict, and so much more. His feature debut "Faults" was a nice introduction to what would become one of the most unique voices in film today. His follow-up, "The Art of Self Defense" is a movie that Ross regularly credits as the film that made him laugh the hardest he has ever laughed in a theater. Riley has now arrived at his third feature "DUAL", which might be his most signature film to date. It debuted at Sundance, and will be available in theaters April 15th. It's the existential black comedy we all need. Riley joins Ross and Ian to talk about the creative process behind "Dual", honing his unique dialogue, working with folks like Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan, working with Emma Ruth Rundle, building the Full of Hell cinematic universe, and so much more. If you are a film dork, a music dork, a gear dork, a jiu jitsu dork, or anything of the sorts, there is something in here for you. The 2019 deadCenter Film Festival brought in a number of notable indie films, but perhaps our most anticipated was The Art of Self-Defense from writer/director Riley Stearns and Bleeker Street. The official synopsis for The Art of Self-Defense reads: The dark comedy The Art of Self-Defense stars Jesse Eisenberg and is set in the world of karate. Eisenberg plays a man who is attacked at random on the street and enlists in a local dojo, led by a charismatic and mysterious Sensei (Alessandro Nivola), in an effort to learn how to defend himself. This dark comedy exploring karate culture, toxic masculinity and the cycles of violence debuted at the SXSW 2019 film festival to huge critical acclaim. The film is scheduled for a July 12 wide-release. Writer/Director Riley Stearns joined The Cinematic Schematic after the film festival to talk more about what inspired him to make a movie about karate, why he decided to explore such timely themes, and how he assembled his all-star trio cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Imogen Poots, and Alessandro Nivola. "In the end there is a 50% chance you will have your daughter back." It's the last Trailer Rewind of 2017, and this time it's personal. When they decided to watch Andy's trailer pick from our Syriana episode on February 20, 2015, Steve and JJ had no idea of the impact it would have on them. Writer/director Riley Stearns has crafted a dark tale exploring loss, free will, and the decisions people make that give others power over them. This film checks all the boxes of a small independent film: character-driven story, few locations, and an important message to share. Faults is one of those rare exceptions that has found the perfect cast. Leland Orser is one of “those guys”, a familiar face often in a small supporting role. However, here he is one of the leads carrying this film. It is his portrayal of Ansel Roth, a burned out, down on his luck, and weary cult expert that holds this film together. He is joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, as Claire, the subject of his deprogramming efforts. It's challenging to find an accurate adjective to describe the journey that we take with Ansel and Claire. At times Steve found some humor in it, while JJ found himself filled with anxiety. What they both agree on is that this is a film worth watching and discussing.
