Episode 54 - Murdock and Marvel: 2001 Part 2 The year 2001 has a dark shadow over it, and there are elements of this year that are pretty rough, because as the year closed comic books were trying to make sense of and deal with 9/11 just like the rest of America. But the start of the year brought a lot of great entertainment and for the first time in years sales held steady (mostly) This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2001. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #14-26, Daredevil / Spider-Man #1-4, Daredevil: Yellow #1-5, Daredevil: Ninja #2-3, Marvel Knights #7-9 and #11-15, Black Widow #2-3, Spider-Man and Mysterio #1-3, X-Men #109, Big Town #4, Deadpool #52, Black Panther #31, Elektra #1, Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #7-8, 100 Greatest Marvels of All Time #1 and 4, Marvel Masterworks: Daredevil #2 and Marvel Masterworks: The Mighty Thor #3. Writing: David Mack (#14-15), Brian Michael Bendis (#16-19 and #26) Bob Gale (#20-25) Pencils: Joe Quesada and David Ross (#14), Ross (#15 and #23-25), David Mack (#16-19), Phil Winslade (#20-22), Alex Maleev (#26) Inks: Mark Morales (#14-15) David Mack and Morales (#15) Mack and Pond Scum (#17) Mack (#18-19), James Hodgkins (#20-22), Hodgkins and Mark Pennington (#23), Pennington (#24-25), Alex Maleev (#26) After the wrap-up of the Parts of a hole storyline that included a trail of Kingpin before he's eventually blinded by Maya Lopez aka Echo, we get our first story from Brian Michael Bendis with David Mack moving over to art. The 4-book story, Titled Wake Up, is a fantastically told and beautifully brought to page by the creative team. It doesn't really have any action and is really only loosely about Daredevil. Interesting, right? This is, without a doubt, worth spotlighting this week – so we'll talk more about it then. The other main story we get this year is called Playing to the Camera in which Daredevil is sued by rich philanthropist Samuel Griggs and wants to retain Nelson and Murdock (specifically Matt Murdock) as his lawyer. Matt reluctantly agrees as he knows he wasn't involved with destroying the man's greenhouse and plants and wants to figure out who's behind it. As Daredevil, he hires a lawyer and they have their days in court surrounded by a media circus. The trial ends with 3 daredevils in the courtroom - Murdock as himself holding a video tape of himself as Daredevil earlier that morning, Peter Parker in a Daredevil costume with the defense attorney and a third Daredevil who crashes a window, admits to the property damage, offers the $50k needed to fix it and then reveals his true identity as Terrance Hillman. Confused? So is Murdock and Nelson. Apparently, Hillman decided on his own to dress up as Daredevil and crash the courtroom. He then used the reveal and announced retirement to swing fame and fortune (and help out the real Daredevil). We also learn that Hillman didn't destroy the property either and that the Ringmaster was behind everything. He was testing his ability to implant false memories in people. One interesting side note about the first issue of the Playing with Camera storyline. A second story appears in the issue “My Brother's Keeper” written by Stan Lee and Kevin Hall with art by Gene Colan. In the short story, we see Daredevil and Spider-Man during a night out. We did get one more book in December from Brian Michael Bendis but we'll save that for next year's discussion. Finally In Daredevil: Yellow we get a 6-book story in which Matt is writing letters to the late Karen Page about the early days of Daredevil and the Nelson and Murdock law firm as a way to find forgiveness for everything that happened between them. The story, by Jeph Loeb, artist Tim Sale and colors by Matt Hollingsworth, is another retailing of the first handful of issues from Daredevil volume 1 that ends with the Purple Man story and Matt finding the forgiveness he needs. Jim Rutledge & Alex Gravatt hold down the show with Matt & Molly out for the rest of the week. They discuss the news of Derek Rose announcing his retirement this morning, asks fans for who their Wisconsin sports-version of Rose (a great player whose career got cut short)? They assemble a shortlist of Christian Yelich, Ben Sheets, Sterling Sharpe and Don Majkowski. First, they discuss the news of Derek Rose's retirement earlier this morning and today's poll question: who is the Derek Rose of Wisconsin sports (a great young player whose career was derailed by injury)? Plus, how badly did Alex Gravatt misrepresent Jim's "fair" poll question about who Badger Football fans would want as the team's head coach right now. Did Jim poke the Bear in the Don by even asking the question, and should he be thinking G for even putting him on Barry's radar? They also talk with Evan about how Packers fans might welcome back Aaron Jones to Lambeau Field, and was the Packers signing Josh Jacobs the Wisconsin version of what the Cubs did by hiring Craig Counsell to replace David Ross?? Our MLB Preview Series rolls along on the Jack Vita Show, as MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis joins the program to break down the National League Central division! Originally taped on Wednesday, March 20, before Opening Day, Jim and Jack put the NL Central under the microscope, leading off with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs impressed in 2023, compiling 83 wins and missing the playoffs by only a game. Over the winter, the club parted ways with manager and 2016 World Series hero David Ross, replacing him with Craig Counsell. Counsell signed the richest contract for a manager in baseball history. The Cubs also re-signed Cody Bellinger, added Japanese star pitcher Shota Imanaga, and traded for Los Angeles Dodgers top corner infield prospect Michael Busch. The Cubs have the second-best farm system entering the 2024 season, according to MLB Pipeline. The club hopes that its young players can continue to take steps forward and under a new manager, it will return to the postseason for the first time in a full, 162-game season since 2018. What is the outlook for the Cubs in 2024, and why is Jim so bullish on them? Despite finishing in last place a season ago, the St. Louis Cardinals enter 2024 as favorites to win the NL Central. The club boasts of the highest over/under win total in most sportsbooks. Will the Cardinals jump from worst to first in 2024 and return to the top of the division? The Milwaukee Brewers enter the season with the fourth-highest odds to win the division. Despite losing manager Craig Counsell and starting pitchers Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff, Milwaukee could have its best lineup of position players that it has had in years. The Brewers have reached the postseason in five of their last six seasons, winning the division three times during that stretch. Are they being slept on? The Cincinnati Reds are the trendy pick in the NL Central. Will their young team exceed expectations? Through the first month of the 2023 season, the Pittsburgh Pirates had the best record in the National League. The club ended up winning 76 games. Can the Pirates win the division in 2024? Jim and Jack discuss how difficult the Central division is to forecast. There isn't a clear runaway favorite, but one could make a case for any of the five teams to finish atop the division. Jim also highlights the best prospects in the division, detailing which players fans should keep an eye that could potentially make a big impact at the Major League level in 2024. Jim and Jack provide detailed outlooks and over/under win total projections for each team! Chicago Cubs (0:00 - 14:25) St. Louis Cardinals (14:25 - 20:40) Milwaukee Brewers (20:40 - 29:30) Cincinnati Reds (29:30 - 39:20) Pittsburgh Pirates (39:20 - END) You can follow Jim on Twitter (@jimcallisMLB) and catch all of his prospect analysis at MLB Pipeline!

CLICK HEREWho we areBlock Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

Ready or not, baseball seasons starts in the wee hours of Wednesday morning so David Brown is here to talk about how Blake Snell signing with the Giants makes the wild card path tougher in the NL and what's up with Jordan Montgomery. They discuss the Dodgers just forgetting to find a shortstop and how Mookie Betts solves everything. How many other players would be willing to try switching positions on the fly. They talk about great moments in David Ross losing the DH, and the height of Joe Torre's pants. Were the Spring Breakout games anything but baseball's attempt to charge a full big league gate for a minor league spring game (which are usually free), and why was it impossible for the Cubs and White Sox to play it on a different day. They make fun of Jim Bowden's list of players due to break out, talk about old friend Yu Darvish who is making the opening day start for the Padres and much, much more. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/desipio/message
