2010 studio album by the National

Light, fire, water, fruit, and worms; “just the basics”, are Matt Berninger's recurring themes, and these emerge again on his second solo album Get Sunk. One of life's sponges, Berninger is constantly observing and recording the world around him - on paper scraps, whiteboards, garageband files, notes-to-self via text messages and even on baseballs. The sketches of songs ideas, lyrics and poems are transcribed from his brain to his fingertips, ready to go when the songwriting process gets underway. Once you understand this, it's easier to see just how the man has become prolific. Having written lyrics for not one but two albums with his band The National in 2023, his catalogue of solo works is fast developing, first album Serpentine Prison arrived in 2021 (a substantial achievement given that Berninger had some debilitating bouts of depression around the COVID period). After the exercise in traditional, classic song making that was Serpentine Prison, new album Get Sunk is much more an indie pop record not a million miles from The National. It even contains a surefire hit (in the parallel universe where good songs become hits), in the form of drivetime indie single Bonnet Of Pins, destined to become a firm fan favourite. Coming in at 10 tracks, Get Sunk is a lean, mean machine of well-crafted, mid-paced indie and easy on the ear ballads. It's a consistently engaging listen, but some songs, Frozen Oranges, Little By Little, Nowhere Special really showcase Berninger's powers. If this was the 80s, Matt Berninger would have a solo hit record on his hands and a parallel successful career as rock band frontman and solo artist. But, given this is the 21st century streaming era, he'll have to make do with a modestly successful outlet for his prolific creativity - some half-million listeners on his Spotify profile as validation. It's a worthwhile endeavour. Besides, having extra-curricular projects is critical to longevity - very much one of our underlying themes. Berninger's core project, The National, are a rare exception to the rule of a band's career as the proverbial rollercoaster ride. No stratospheric rise as such, more a steady climb. No ‘disintegration' or crash to the bottom for this band, who continue to go from strength to strength it seems. They've never been dropped, now having made 10 albums over 25 years - all of them on the ultra-cool indie label 4AD. The band now is the original line up since the beginning and since The National is Berninger plus two sets of twins, any alternative seems unthinkable. If every band wants the career of Radiohead, then the career of The National can't be too far behind in the dreams of young friends forming indie bands in every small corner of the world. Still, it took a minute. As Berninger quips “longevity takes a long time”...before elaborating on the early days:“We were ignored for the first couple of records, nobody paid attention to us until Alligator and Boxer. Those records were hard fought, but by then, we had four records and so you couldn't pin us down. Then Annie Clark (St. Vincent) and Sufjan Stephens started helping us and we grew this community in Brooklyn that became a really healthy thing for all of us”. Creating a body of work of some four albums before registering on the radar is the way to go, if you can get away with it. By the time High Violet came around in 2010 (and its highly successful successors Trouble Will Find Me, Sleep Well Beast), The National were a bona fide transatlantic success. More than that, however, they represent (probably along with Arctic Monkeys) how a band of the 21st century can achieve a kind of success that is, in essence, a throwback to the old world. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Phil Wegmann. Phil is White House reporter for RealClearNews and RealClearPolitics. Check him out on Twitter at @PhilipWegmann.Phil's Music Pick: The NationalLet us tell you, we have had *a bunch* of listeners ask us for an episode on The National, and we are nothing if not responsive to our fans. Neither one of your hosts previously was extremely familiar with the band, which is why we called in our ringer, Phil Wegmann, who earlier helped to lead our path through the Creedence Clearwater Revival show.Looking at Wiki's description of The National -- “The National has been compared to Joy Division, Leonard Cohen, Interpol, Wilco, Depeche Mode and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds” -- you could be forgiven for thinking this already was one of Jeff's favorite bands. And that doesn't even take into account the fact there's a lot of Arcade Fire in this music, as well.Much of your opinion of The National could hinge on how you feel about lead singer/lyricist Matt Berninger and his classic baritone voice. There's not a ton of vocal modulation on these tracks! That, of course, makes for a distinctive sound and separates the band from many of its peers. The band's self-titled debut is a bit of an outlier – there are sounds there they never quite would return t0 – but after that, a fantastic string of albums begins with Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers, one Scot argues actually is among their best. Alligator, Boxer, and High Violet make the case for The National becoming one of the most consistent acts of the decade while continuing to tweak their songwriting and performance at each stage. 2013's Trouble Will Find Me ends up as a top choice of all three of your hosts.Maybe you're new to the band, too! Don't worry. Jump in and experience The National through the eyes of a superfan and two other hosts who were in the same position you're in. And if you already love The National, well, there's a decent chance our takes will somehow manage to irk each and every one of you in some way. We can't all be “Mr. November,” after all.

Matt has teased with the philosophy before but this episode is all-in with a somehow not too literal reading of the title of Elliott Smith's heartbreaking 1997 album, Either/Or. After giving a quick foundation for Kierkegaardian analysis - out of care for your intro to philosophy course as well - Matt traces the legacy of Smith and the presence of Kierkegaard's existentialism through two (massive) personal favorites: The National's High Violet and Frightened Rabbit's The Midnight Organ Fight. Kierkegaard often guides us to consider anxiety and Matt definitely felt some while Tim was choosing the winner…
Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. Today we're talking with Jeremy Bolm of the bands Touche Amore & Hesitation Wounds, also of First Ever Podcast. We talked about The National's 2010 album "High Violet" & never being too late to discover a new band. Touche Amore released their most recent album, "Lament," last year on Epitaph Records. They're headed out on the road later this month with Thrice and Self Defense Family. Check out the album here: https://toucheamore.bandcamp.com/

Who will win at Survivor Series, and will Jack and Phil's bold predictions finally determine who is "Mr Predictions"? Why was Zelina Vega really fired? Premiere episode! Tom and Cara swap The National’s “High Violet” and Taylor Swift’s “folklore.”
Just when I thought the pandemic took out this podcast, Taylor Swift drops a new album and brings the FANGIRL FORUM out of its coronavirus slumber! My friend, Jasmine Carr, is back to review & break down Taylor Swift's eighth album, folklore. Plus, we rank all of Taylor's albums so far. Where does folklore rank? Which albums top our lists? There's only one way to find out. Wrap yourself up in your favorite cardigan and let's get back to doing what we do best: fangirling! At FANGIRL FORUM, Black lives matter and so does mental health. Therapy for Black Girls is a space that was developed to present mental health topics in a way that feels more accessible and relevant when so often the stigma surrounding mental health issues and therapy prevents Black women from taking the step of seeing a therapist. Please check out https://therapyforblackgirls.com/ how you can help support the work they encourage mental wellness to Black women & girls. **Disclaimer: Throughout the episode, Taylor Swift's collaborator on folklore, The National's Aaron Dessner, is mentioned a few times. Unfortunately after recording, I realized I said Dressner instead of Dessner. This was a mistake. I mean no disrespect to Aaron Dessner. I think he and The National are amazing. Seriously, their album is High Violet is a work of art. Follow Meredith on Twitter/Instagram: @MeredithLoftus Don't forget to subscribe, rate, comment, and share with the masses!

Last week, I wrote a piece for Uproxx weighing the strengths of 2007's "Boxer" against the other albums in The National's formidable catalog. In spite of strong contenders like 2005's "Alligator," 2010's "High Violet", and 2013's "Trouble Will Find Me," I ultimately decided that "Boxer" is the best album The National has yet made. I had so much fun delving into the minutia of The National's career that I decided to call up another super-fan, Chris DeVille of Stereogum, in order to discuss what exactly makes "Boxer" so special, as well as its ultimate place in the pantheon of National records and 21st century indie-rock overall. Join us as we walk through this album, and measure it against the other albums in the band's discography.

Matt Berninger is the frontman of the Brooklyn indie rock band The National. The band's latest album is High Violet.
High Violet, the latest from The National, is getting crazy buzz, but how does it stack up to 2007's Boxer? And, regardless of that, is it worth listening to? We tell you!
Will, Barrett and Chris debate the merits of the new album by The National, "High Violet," and the hype surrounding it. Also, Ronnie James Dio and Squarewave.
"High Violet" is the followup to their higly acclaimed last cd and has the makings of a true break through for this band of post punk survivors.
