The National’s Matt Berninger loves his family – so much so his first solo album, Serpentine Prison, is dedicated to his dad. It’s produced by the legendary Booker T. Jones and the story goes back to his father’s record collection, and, more recently, a classic argumentative Christmas family get-together. Matt also speaks to Greg Cochrane about 2020 – how lockdown has messed with his sleep patterns and reignited his love for fishing – plus his plans for another Mistaken For Strangers movie with his brother Tom (a TV version also in the works) and how he was clueless about his bandmates Aaron and Bryce Dessners' collaborative work on Taylor Swift’s Folklore album until the night before it dropped. Inspired by a true story, the film was written and directed by three-time Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, Marshall curry. In this latest episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast listeners are whisked back in time to the evening of Feb. 20th, 1939, a night where 20,000 Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism — an event largely forgotten from American history. This chilling and distressingly relevant to today’s times event is the subject of the recently released, Oscar nominated short film “A Night At The Garden,” and this episode features an interview with the filmmaker behind the film,” Marshall Curry. Curry’s body of work is remarkable, from the 2002 Oscar-nominated Street Fight (which chronicled Cory Booker's 2002 mayoral campaign), to the Oscar-nominated If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front (about an environmentalist who faced life in prison for burning two timber facilities), and onto his work on Mistaken For Strangers (centering on the band The National). All of Marshall’s films are engaging, revealing to the human condition, socially conscious, and riveting. While Curry’s extensive career and projects are discussed, this episode’s focus was aimed most sharply at “A Night At The Garden,” a distressing documentary short made entirely from archival footage filmed that fateful night. This affecting film transports audiences to this chilling gathering and shines a light on the power of demagoguery and anti-Semitism in the United States, and in this episode Michael and Marshall discuss how the footage was unearthed, the unique way in which Marshall edited and presented the footage, and the alarming relevance of this event, so many years removed from today, to the current political climate in America. Professionally speaking, first and foremost Josh Larsen is a film critic, one half of a successful duo on the Filmspotting podcast. But he's also a man of faith. We talk about the intersection of movies and Christianity, and how that influences Josh's criticism. And then we tackle a fun task: recommending underappreciated films since 2000. Hailed by Michael Moore as "one of the best documentaries about a band that I've ever seen" and by Pitchfork as "the funniest, most meta music movie since SPINAL TAP," MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS is a truly hilarious, unusual, and moving film about two brothers, Matt and Tom Berninger. Matt, the lead singer of the critically acclaimed rock band The National, finally finds himself flush with success. His younger brother, Tom, is a loveable slacker - a filmmaker and metal-head still living with his parents in Cincinnati. On the eve of The National's biggest tour to date, Matt invites Tom to work for the band as a roadie, unaware of Tom's plan to film the entire adventure. What starts as a rock documentary soon becomes a surprisingly honest portrait of a charged relationship between two brothers, and the frustration of unfulfilled creative ambitions. Tom and Matt join us to talk about the pursuit of artistic aspirations, family and expectations.
La musica: The National – Don’t Swallow the Cap; Ofeliadorme – In The wake Of Adversity; Tori Amos - Trouble’s Lament; Hugo – Fall; Dj Koze - Nices Wölkchen feat. Apparat

In 2010, indie rockers The National are about to embark on their biggest international tour yet when lead singer Matt Berninger invites his younger at times floundering brother Tom along to be part of the tour crew. Tom agrees, and brings his camera with him to document the journey. What follows is anything but smooth sailing. From Tom's highs to lows, the ensuing film "Mistaken For Strangers" is a entertaining meditation on success, failure, redemption, and brotherly love.
