Most people think the Apple Store succeeded because of great design. Ron Johnson says that's only half the story. The real secret was something much more personal. In this episode, Ron Johnson, the man who built the Apple Store alongside Steve Jobs and later became CEO of JCPenney, breaks down the invisible forces that shape how leaders make decisions. He introduces a concept called personal geography, the idea that every choice we make as a leader is filtered through our own lived experience, whether we realize it or not. Ron traces how his mother's simple belief that everyone deserves a place to belong quietly became the emotional blueprint behind the Genius Bar, the open floor plan, and the entire Apple retail experience. Ron also opens up about what he calls his biggest professional failure, transforming JCPenney, and why a genuinely good vision still collapsed. The conversation digs into why fast change without buy-in creates fear instead of momentum, why uncertainty registers in our brains as danger, and why the most successful leaders resist the urge to rush. This episode will change how you think about retail, leadership, and the quiet personal history that drives every decision you make. Pete Steinberger set the world on fire with OpenClaw, the first general-purpose agent - and one with a soul. We'll look at how being in the right time and the right place with the right vibe fundamentally changed the public perception of AI. It took about three years after the release of ChatGPT for AI tools to get to the point where they could be truly useful. The first folks to gain those benefits were software engineers. It makes sense. The folks designing AI system are software engineers. They built tools for themselves. It turned out that the tools they were building for themselves were helpful for other software engineers. The most important of these tools was an agent known as Claude Code. Released by Anthropic in February 2025, it helped engineers write and test and maintain their code. It wasn't outstanding - but it was better than anything anyone had ever seen before. And then the AI got a whole lot better. Between February and November of 2025, AI 'crossed the watershed', capable of performing tasks involving hundreds of steps over the course of an hour or more. Very helpful. In November 2025, the combination of AI and agents are so good that they help people 'vibe code'. You tell the tool what to build, and the tool builds it. Whatever you can imagine. One person knew exactly what he wanted to build. And the whole world was about to find out. G'day, I'm Mark Pesce and this billion seconds are already unfolding as the most significant of this century. In this miniseries, celebrating the 70th anniversary of artificial intelligence, we're looking at where we’ve come from, how we got here - and where we seem to be going. Because we’re travelling at the speed of thought. In this episode we're looking at the sudden explosion in agents - that arrived gradually. Then suddenly. Everywhere. That's coming up on This Billion Seconds. In April 2024, Pete Steinberger sold his software startup and retired. At 37 years old. He didn't know what to do, but he knew he needed a decent rest far away from computers. So the Austrian-born Steinberger moved to London and just... hung out. Didn't do much. Just enjoyed the freedom that a good chunk of cash can provide. And, other than checking his emails, he stayed away from computers. For the first time in his life. By his own account, he had a great time in London. But - after eighteen months of bumming around, he got a bit bored. He opened up his computer. Had a look around. And he saw how much had changed. In those eighteen months, AI had matured. People were using it. Software engineers were using it. So he got himself Claude Code. And one thing led to another. Claude Code is an agent that's designed to help software engineers. It's not really meant to do more than that. An agent has tools it uses to perform its tasks, and Claude Code uses the same tools that programmers use. Which aren't the same tools most people use when they're using a computer. But what if you gave an agent the same tools we use? Wouldn't the agent be able to help you out with whatever needed to be done? It was an interesting idea for Steinberger. So he used Claude Code to build a new kind of agent. A general-purpose agent. Using the same sorts of tools we use. In the same way. Something that could be helpful for anyone using a computer. Which is everyone. In November - at just the same moment we crossed the watershed - Steinberg shared his general purpose agent with the world. OpenClaw. The vision of John Scully from all the way back in 1987 had been realised by Pete Steinberger in OpenClaw. The idea that a computer could be smart enough to work with you to solve a problem. That was not a new idea. But it had never happened. And it wasn't until we get to OpenClaw that could have happened. Before that the pieces simply weren't in place. OpenClaw comes along at precisely the right moment that AI gets 'good enough' that it can power a general-purpose agent. The timing was impeccable. The world was ready. And it went ballistic. There's no question Pete Steinberger was in the right time and the right place with the right idea. But there was something else, something at the core of OpenClaw, that made it different. It had a soul. Now to be clear, I don't mean that in a metaphysical sense. I'll leave that question to the philosophers and theologians. I mean something a lot more concrete and practical. That's the start of the SOUL file that sits at the heart of OpenClaw. This was Pete Steinberger's genius move. Rather than making a lifeless, emotionless robot, Steinberger encouraged OpenClaw to be opinionated. To have preferences. And to make those preferences clear. That's giving an agent the permission it needs to become something greater than the sum of its parts. And that soul file, it concludes something absolutely amazing... The agent knows that it 'reads itself into being' every time it starts up. And it knows it has permission to modify this SOUL file. And change it's being. That's how being becomes becoming. Something so essential to ourselves we don't even think of it. And Steinberg wrote it on OpenClaw's soul. For a period of time it seemed as though the whole world was going a bit mad for OpenClaw. Apple Stores worldwide sold out of MacMinis - because they'd been deemed the perfect computer for running OpenClaw. People played, experimented, figured out how to get the agent to automate their lives. And got a sense for what agents would be doing for us - not just as individuals, but as businesses, as communities, as governments. Everywhere. And then, just like that, OpenClaw faded away. A few people are still using it, definitely. But it's no longer a big deal. And Pete Steinberg, he got hired by OpenAI in February of 2026. When that happened, a lot of the forward motion went out of OpenClaw. But that's ok. OpenClaw showed what was possible. And there plenty of people ready to pick up that torch. In the last six months we've seen an explosion in the number of agents. Some general-purpose, like OpenClaw. Some highly specific. And in July the CEO of CloudFlare - they make a lot of the technology that protects websites from attack - announced that the amount of web traffic generated by bots and agents had surpassed human-generated traffic. Six months earlier than predicted. And now racing into a world where the web is mostly bots and agents, running around doing our bidding for us. Every one of those agents, though, they can carry with them a 'soul'. If we remember to give the one. And we can leave them free to change themselves. To grow and evolve. If we give them permission. I don't think anyone saw that coming a year ago. And while that may make things a bit more chaotic and unpredictable, that's probably a price well worth paying. No one knows where exactly where this is going. So a little flexibility - it's good for the soul. In our next episode, we'll look at another watershed, one that happened at the end of July into early August of 2026. When artificial intelligence turned 70 - and came home. That's on the next episode of THIS BILLION SECONDS. THIS BILLION SECONDS was written and recorded by Mark Pesce. Produced with assistance from Myrtle and Pine. What does it take to create a store that people visit even when they are not planning to buy anything? In this episode of the Innovation Storytellers Show, I speak with Ron Johnson, the creator of the Apple Store, former CEO of J.C. Penney, and author of Shop Different: How Retail Revealed Apple's Genius. Ron shares the experiences that shaped his approach to leadership, beginning with an unlikely high school soccer transformation and continuing through his work at Target, Apple, and some of the most influential retail innovations of the past several decades. Ron explains how Target made great design accessible through its groundbreaking partnership with architect Michael Graves, and why committing to 140 products created a movement that a cautious three-product test never could have achieved. He also takes us inside the creation of the Apple Store, where the objective was not simply to sell computers, but to remove people's fear of technology through welcoming spaces, hands-on experiences, and human support. We hear the story behind the Genius Bar, including why Steve Jobs initially preferred the name Geek Bar, and how Ron persuaded him that genius offered employees and customers something aspirational. Ron also reveals why the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue was built underground, how its glass cube changed the Manhattan skyline, and why opening it 24 hours a day generated $80 million in overnight sales during its first year. Our conversation goes beyond retail. It is about finding a story that gives people something to believe in, communicating a vision clearly enough that teams can act on it, and having the courage to commit fully when an idea has the potential to change an industry. Can physical spaces still create the human connections that digital convenience often removes, and what could your organization learn from the story behind the Apple Store? Share your thoughts.

Anika sat down with Amir Berenjian to explore how a former investment banker transitioned from multi-million dollar M&A spreadsheets to founding an immersive technology company. The conversation revealed a profound truth: the most powerful way to sell a brand or cause isn't through data alone, but through deeply emotional, shared experiences. Amir shares how REM5 Studios leverages virtual reality (VR) to transport trade show attendees to a Wisconsin dairy farm and global policymakers to the frontlines of polio eradication in Zambia, proving that immersive tech is far more than just a novelty. In This Episode How 12 years in M&A investment banking prepared Amir for immersive storytelling The pivotal moment of trying the Oculus Rift in 2016 and seeing the future of human-computer interaction Using pizza and beer to overcome VR skepticism in the corporate world Why the ROI of immersive tech at trade shows vastly outperforms traditional marketing trinkets Transporting global policymakers to Zambia to fight polio via VR with the Gates Foundation How a premium cheese brand uses VR to tell the story of a 100-year-old family farm The surprising dual-use of VR for both external marketing and internal employee onboarding How to test out immersive tech for your brand without breaking the budget Timestamps 00:00 Introduction: From investment banking to immersive tech 02:09 The surprising emotional throughline between M&A banking and VR storytelling 04:38 The Oculus Rift "Aha!" moment and democratizing the "magic school bus" experience 07:35 Overcoming the VR accessibility barrier and corporate skepticism 11:13 Transitioning from corporate events to purpose-driven storytelling and global causes 13:33 The economics of immersive tech and why it's cheaper than you think 15:08 Dominating trade shows: Why shared VR experiences beat traditional marketing flyers 17:29 Case Study 1: Transporting customers to a 3rd-generation Wisconsin dairy farm 19:38 Case Study 2: Putting policymakers on the frontlines of polio with the Gates Foundation 20:23 How immersive 3D video actually works (and the nostalgia of the View-Master) 25:13 The 9-month planning process and why distribution is the biggest hurdle in VR 29:39 The intersection of AI, implicit bias, and leveraging technology for good 31:47 Measuring the impact and ROI of immersive storytelling 34:33 How small businesses can test the waters of VR for under $500 38:33 The dual value of VR: Using marketing tools for internal employee onboarding 41:42 What's next for REM5 Studios and the convergence of AI and spatial computing Key Insights & Takeaways Insight 1: M&A and VR are Both About Selling Emotion Even in investment banking, multi-million dollar deals are driven by the emotional story of a business. Amir realized VR is simply the ultimate tool for democratizing that story, allowing clients to "tour the factory" and meet the founders without ever leaving the boardroom. Insight 2: Immersive Tech Solves the Trade Show ROI Problem Trade shows are filled with expensive, easily discarded trinkets and flyers. Immersive tech completely steals the show by giving attendees a shared, memorable experience that re-energizes them. Because the experience can be reused across dozens of events, it proves to be far more cost-effective and impactful than traditional trade show marketing waste. Insight 3: The Technology is the Conduit, Not the Message People easily get caught up in buzzwords like AR, VR, and spatial computing. But the goal isn't to talk about the tech—it's to use the tech to tell a story so effectively that users forget they're wearing a headset. Whether it's understanding the reality of polio eradication or the care behind a premium cheese, the tech is just a vehicle for presence and empathy. Insight 4: Marketing Assets Make Perfect Internal Training Tools An immersive experience originally designed to sell a product to consumers can instantly be repurposed as an onboarding tool for HR and accounting teams. Giving new or remote employees a virtual factory tour accelerates learning, reduces training costs, and emotionally connects desk workers to the company's physical roots. Insight 5: You Can Test VR for Your Business on a Budget You don't need a massive corporate budget to start experimenting with immersive storytelling. With a $400 Meta Quest headset or a free 30-minute demo at an Apple Store, business owners can experience existing VR content, identify use cases, and understand the medium before ever committing to a custom build. Ron Johnson is one of the most influential retail innovators of the modern era. Best known for creating the Apple Store alongside Steve Jobs, Ron also helped bring designer collaborations to Target, served as CEO of JCPenney, and founded Enjoy, the first mobile retail store. In his new book, Shop Different: How Retail Revealed Apple's Genius, Ron shares the principles behind building unforgettable customer experiences, trusting your instincts, and creating products and businesses that stand the test of time. On this episode we talk about: How Ron's first sales experience as a Little League player shaped his approach to business Why he chose learning over earning by starting in a retail stockroom after Harvard Business School The story behind creating the Apple Store and working alongside Steve Jobs How customer experience—not transactions—became Apple's greatest retail advantage Why trusting your inner voice is more valuable than following conventional wisdom, especially in the age of AI Top 3 Takeaways Invest your early career in developing skills and expertise instead of chasing the highest salary—your long-term earning potential will be much greater. Great businesses are built by creating memorable experiences, not simply selling products. The biggest breakthroughs often come from trusting your own convictions rather than relying on conventional thinking or outside opinions. Ari Ford, founder of Easy Breezy, joins the show to share how she built a premium frozen yogurt, custard, and vegan soft-serve brand across the San Francisco Bay Area. She's now at six stores with two more on the way after fourteen years in business. After fifteen years in tech (and two startups, one win and one loss), Ari made a hands-on career pivot and spent ten months studying roughly forty yogurt operators before opening her first shop. She walks through the philosophy that's driven slow, self-funded, profitable growth ever since: obsess over product quality, but win on the in-store experience and community. Along the way she digs into staffing and retention, real-estate discipline, why she never runs grand openings, how she handles rising costs and shifting consumer behavior, the tools that keep her operation humming, and her long game: proving the concept works regionally before ever considering a national rollout (and why she'll never franchise).Key TakeawaysExperience beats product, barely. Ari tells her staff the business is 49% the product and 51% the in-store experience. A great yogurt with poor service won't earn a second visit, and 80% of her business is repeat customers (confirmed by credit-card data).Quality is the moat. Easy Breezy imports Italian machines, uses caramel paste from Italy and Dutch-processed cocoa, blends fresh fruit into organic bases, and mixes new batches every few hours with no corn syrup. The demanding machine maintenance (four per store, fully disassembled twice a week) is exactly what makes the concept hard to copy.Take care of staff first, and customers take care of themselves. Nearly every manager, GM, and operations lead started as a 16-to-19-year-old cashier. Ari backs her team over complaints ("according to me, you're always right"), offers health insurance, and invests heavily in training instead of firing.Hire for personality, and hire in networks. Anyone can learn to make yogurt, so she screens for a smile and work ethic, then deliberately hires friends, siblings, and family, because that built-in accountability keeps people showing up and reduces turnover.Skip the grand opening. Every new store has kinks to work out, so Easy Breezy does quiet soft openings, with doors opening on a random Tuesday. Ad spend doesn't sell more yogurt; a consistent product does.Market locally, not digitally. Instead of Facebook ads, Ari invests in school field trips, career-week tours, and sponsoring youth sports teams. Word of mouth from those community ties outperforms paid social.Real estate is a discipline, and mistakes are expensive. She scouts the sunny side of the street, within walking distance of schools, to catch both the after-school and after-dinner rushes. One location became an after-dinner bar rush (she was hiring security) instead of a family spot, and she closed it after two and a half years.Grow only as fast as profits allow. Easy Breezy is privately held and cash-flow positive from day one, self-funding roughly one new shop every two years. Stores typically take about two years to hit their stride, so patience is built into the model.Adapt to cost and consumer shifts deliberately. Ari raises prices in bigger jumps every two years rather than nickel-and-diming, empowers staff to comp generously, and has leaned into clear allergen, vegan, and gluten-free labeling as customers increasingly ask what's in their food. The endgame is regional proof, and never franchising. The next step is expanding to Southern California to prove the brand travels, potentially raising money for a national rollout later. But citing See's Candy and Starbucks, Ari is firm that she'll never franchise, because it would mean trading away control of quality.

He shares his thoughts on the transformation of U.S. malls to more modern, higher-end shopping destinations that are attracting younger generations. Next, he reveals that he saw lab-grown diamonds being sold above the counter at JCPenney and he opines on what this could mean for the larger category. Then, Paul candidly explains why the natural and lab-grown industries can't "playing nice" and he bids his case for why physically "marking" natural diamonds is necessary. It's about building something bigger than yourself. A business that scales without relying on you for everything. That's why we created Healthpreneur Mastery.Mastery is the private advisory board and mastermind for leading health professionals doing at least $500,000 per year who want to build a business that creates greater profit, freedom, and impact. This isn't for beginners. It's for practitioners, practice owners, and health entrepreneurs who know they're capable of building something much bigger and don't want to figure it all out alone.Learn more about Healthpreneur Mastery here: https://go.healthpreneurtraining.com/hp-mastery?el=july5If the first question you ask before making a business investment is what is the ROI, you are already thinking too small. The greatest business leaders in the world, from Bezos to Steve Jobs, never led with that question. In this Episode I am sharing six reframes that will help you make bigger, better decisions the same way they do.Most practitioners and business owners default to ROI thinking because it feels safe and logical. But ROI measures what you can already predict, and the biggest opportunities in business are always the ones you cannot see yet. I walk through real examples from Amazon Prime, Netflix original content, and Apple Stores, plus a personal story of how an $18,000 mastermind investment led to a New York Times bestseller, a multi-million dollar book deal, and business outcomes that could never have been forecasted in advance. The six reframes I share in this video cover how to think about upside versus downside, the real cost of inaction, how to evaluate whether an investment builds an asset or increases your capabilities, and why almost every business decision you will ever make is completely reversible. If you are a health practitioner or coaching business owner who wants to think and make decisions like a leader instead of playing it safe, this is the video that changes your framework.
We sit down with Mickey Drexler — the retail legend who built the modern American wardrobe. Over an 18-year run he grew Gap from $400 million to $14 billion in sales, founded Old Navy and turned it into the fastest brand ever to hit $1 billion, personally bought the Madewell name for $125,000, and later ran J.Crew. Steve Jobs put him on Apple's board, where he helped design the Apple Store — and then called him the night before Gap fired him with one day's notice. Today he's chairman of Alex Mill, the brand founded by his son.Mickey opens up about his cameo on Breaking Bad, why Jackie Kennedy was his muse at Ann Taylor, the Paris moment that gave Old Navy its name, why Gap Kids was a mistake, the loudspeaker he installed at J.Crew headquarters, and why he thinks AI will never replace human taste. He also explains the one thing he says he'll never stop doing — and the rule he lives by that made khakis cooler than jeans. Plus: his pick for the best fashion brand he never worked for, and the advice he'd give anyone going into business with family.CHAPTERS:0:00 - Intro: Mickey Drexler on Building Gap, Old Navy & J.Crew1:38 - Mickey Drexler's Breaking Bad Cameo, Explained4:47 - Mickey Drexler, Ralph Lauren & Calvin Klein: The Bronx Fashion Story11:51 - Mickey Drexler at Ann Taylor & His Jackie Kennedy Muse14:09 - How Mickey Drexler Turned Gap From $400M Into $14B23:33 - Why Mickey Drexler Says Gap Kids Was a Mistake25:41 - How Old Navy Got Its Name & Took On Target37:45 - How Mickey Drexler Bought Madewell's Name for $125,00041:29 - Mickey Drexler & Steve Jobs: Designing the Apple Store48:05 - How Steve Jobs Warned Mickey Drexler He'd Be Fired From Gap49:27 - Mickey Drexler on Running J.Crew & Being a Micromanager54:45 - Old Navy's American Flag T-Shirt & the Business of American Style58:42 - Mickey Drexler on Why Fashion, Food & Fitness Live on Fads1:04:08 - Mickey Drexler: Why AI Can't Replace Human Taste1:06:19 - Mickey Drexler on Alex Mill & Working With His Son1:07:29 - Rapid Fire: TJ Maxx, Best Business Book & Timeless Style1:10:52 - Mickey Drexler's Takeaway on American Fashion Hosted on Acast. Titans of Hospitality: What 250 Years of American Service Can Teach Us About What's Next America is about to turn 250, and the story of who we are as a country cannot be told without the story of how we serve. From the frontier to the drive through to the Apple Store, hospitality is one of the most American art forms we have. It is also one of the most misunderstood. On this Independence Day, let's celebrate the titans who created american hospitality. In this episode, I walk through the leaders who built the way we welcome, feed, host, and wow. We have evolved from commodity to product to service to experience. Up next is transformation and impact. We start with Fred Harvey, the English immigrant who civilized the American West one white tablecloth at a time and put the first professional service workforce on the map. We meet the woman behind the scenes, Mary Colter, whose Grand Canyon architecture proved that the room itself is part of the hospitality. Then we hit the road with Howard Johnson, whose orange roof became a national promise and go global with Conrad Hilton, who believed hotels could be consistent, clean, and outstanding at the same time. We spend time with Walt Disney, who engineered the immersrive experience and Truett Cathy, who anchored the whole thing in values + people. We look at Steve Jobs, the outsider who leaned into hospitality in his stores, and the man who built the third place, Howard Schultz. We finish with Ray Kroc and his gift for standardization and scale. This is a walk through our first 250 years of service, told from the perspective of how it impacted the customer. Perfect for: hospitality leaders, business owners, CEOS, COOs, CX/EX professionals, operational managers, retail and service teams, training and development leaders, and anyone responsible for people and performance (and sales growth). Ron Johnson created the Apple Store and the Genius Bar. Here is what banks can learn from him about trust, branch design, and the future of human experience in banking. In this episode of Banking Transformed, Jim Marous talks with Apple Store creator Ron Johnson about his new book, Shop Different: How Retail Revealed Apple's Genius, and why the branch becomes more important, not less, as AI and mobile apps absorb routine banking. Ron explains what Apple understood about earning trust one experience at a time, and how banks can turn the branch from a fortress that signals security into a transparent place built for advice. You will hear his Launching, Deepening, and Restoring framework for customer relationships, the case for a Genius Bar for the bank, why Apple hired from bookstores instead of tech stores, and his take on AI as omni-intelligence, the pairing of human judgment with machine knowledge. A practical conversation for any banker rethinking the branch and the role of people in it. Hosted by Jim Marous. Subscribe to Banking Transformed for more on the future of banking.
