The rise of Nazism before World War II wasn't limited to Germany. The German-Americna Bund (Amerikadeutscher Volksbund) formed in Buffalo, New York, in 1936, to promote a favorable view of Nazi Germany. It quickly grew to 70 local groups around the country, with 20 training camps where kids aged 8-18 practiced military drills and wore Nazi-style uniforms. By 1939, 20,000 people attended the Bund's Pro American Rally in Madison Square Garden. When Prohibition ended in 1933, Jewish American gangsters who had been running liquor businesses suddenly had more time on their hands, and they decided to fight back against the Bund. In Newark, New Jersey, Abner “Longie” Zwillman formed a secret organization called the Minutemen to fight the Nazis. The Minutemen, who operated from 1933 to 1941, would break up Bund meetings using their fists, baseball bats, and stink bombs. The Minutemen were based in New Jersey, but Jewish gangsters around the country fought the Bund, including in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles. To help us learn more, I'm joined on this episode by Leslie K. Barry, author of the historic novel, Newark Minutemen: A True 1930s Legend about One Man's Mission to Save a Nation's Soul Without Losing His Own, whose uncle was a Minuteman in Newark in the 1930s. Can we understand the track we're on in time? Alan Jacobsen is a cinematographer who works on narrative and documentary projects with an authentic, natural eye and sensitive curiosity. His camera work is masterful, intuitive and intimate, capturing the sensory story in each powerful frame. He studied film at New York University and minored in architecture and urban studies, which gives him a full spectrum of how to think of a frame in a scene. After school, he worked for several years as a technician in the electrical department until he found documentary cinematography as a place to develop his full potential. Alan gained recognition in 2018 for Strong Island, which was nominated for the 2018 Academy Award for Best Documentary and won the 2018 Emmy Award for Outstanding Merit in Documentary Film. Here is what you’ll learn:What made Alan Jacobsen want to break into the film industry.A summer camp where he did TV production and fell in love with cameras and photography. His pivot towards documentary cinematography after working for several years as a technician in electrical departments. How his knowledge of architecture helps him appreciate forms, shapes, balances and symmetry.Differences between lighting in documentaries and narrative films.Marshall Curry’s technique of thinking of a documentary scene as if it were a narrative scene.Alan's favorite movies; Nashville by Robert Altman, Medium Cool by Haskell Wexler, and Koyaanisqatsi by Godfrey Reggio. Why working with your idols is not the best idea.Alan's preference for movies that trust audiences enough to give them a role in storytelling, where they not only receive, but contribute. To learn more about Alan, follow him on Instagram, or visit his website.Interested in knowing more about the show? Follow:Instagram: @kino_societyFacebook: @KinoSocietyWebsite: https://www.kinosociety.com/

In an election season when the words "Will you condemn white supremacy" are considered a gotcha question at a presidential debate, it seems like a good time to look back at another moment in American history when race and ethnic division took center stage. On February 20th, 1939, 20,000 people streamed into Madison Square Garden in New York City. Outside, the marquee was lit up with the evening's main event: a "Pro-American rally." Inside, on the stage, there was a 30-foot tall banner of George Washington, sandwiched between American flags...and two huge swastikas. Today’s episode is a special collaboration with The Memory Palace and producer Nate DiMeo. Special thanks to Marshall Curry, whose film “A Night To Remember” inspired this story. Marshall also talks about his upcoming plans, which include a fictionalized version of a true story about a garbage man in Oklahoma who wants to build the largest haunted house attraction in America. We also discuss a small silver lining of the COVID tragedy: it’s easier to get remote appointments with producers, instead of flying to various locations to meet.

What’s old is new again. Same old shit, different day as they say. Our knee-jerk sense of exceptionalism might just lead into another “Night of the long knives”. HISTORY, BRAH! LOOK IT UP! Eldridge and Bob lay their month of Shorties to rest with a documentation of an American event that occurred in Madison Square Garden in 1939 and it had nothing to do with the Rangers or the Knicks. It was a Nazi rally and a disturbing amount of the American people were all about it. Hard not to draw some parallels here. We’re talking about “A Night at the Garden” by Marshall Curry. If James Dolan were around then, you know JD & the Straight Shot would play at this rally. All lighting aside, this is educationally awkward and our only evolution might just be that they mostly figured out not to say the “N” word out loud. Today's episode of the podcast is Part 2 of our Oscar Week coverage!  This week I have four-time Oscar nominee Marshall Curry and Siqi Song! Marshall was on the show last year for his documentary short "A Night at the Garden" that was nominated for an Oscar and it was great to have him back on the show. While this is Siqi Song's first Oscar nomination, she was also part of the art department for the Oscar nominated animated film "Missing Link".  It was great to talk with Marshall about the new venture into Live Action Shorts instead of the Documentaries that he's best known for, and hear about how his film "The Neighbors Window" came together. Siqi's film "Sister" was her final student film project that tells such a unique story of the One Child Law in China. She used an incredible form of stop motion animation using yarn to build all of her characters.  I had such a great time talking to both of these Oscar nominees and can't want to see what happens this Sunday during the 92nd Academy Awards. Make sure to visit ShortsTV on the site below to be able to watch all of the Oscar Nominated Shorts or find them in a theater near you.  Thanks, Marshall and Siqi! Enjoy the episode.

Today's episode is Part 3 of our Oscar Week coverage! Today's films come to us from the Live Action and Documentary Short categories. I talked with 3 of the Oscar nominated filmmakers, starting with Guy Nattiv from "Skin", Jeremy Comte from "Fauve", and Marshall Curry from "A Night at the Garden".  Today's collection of films are all incredibly intense films with powerful themes and messages. I talked with each of the filmmakers about how their films stories came about, how Marshall learned about the Night at the Garden, the acting choices made in the films, the messages they hope are taken away from their films and so much more! Marshall Curry recently made the news with "A Night at the Garden" when Fox News refused to play his 30 second trailer.  The Oscar Shorts are still playing in theaters around the country, as well as on the Oscar Shorts TV. All 15 films nomianted in the short film categories are absolutely incredible and I've had a wonderful time talking to all of these great filmmakers. This is the final part of our 3 part Oscar Shorts coverage and we can't begin to thank all of these Oscar Nominated Directors enough for their time. A special thanks to Guy Nattiv, Jeremy Comte, and Marshall Curry for taking the time out of their incredibly busy schedule. Don't miss their films as part of the Oscar Shorts Program.  Best of luck to all of our guests at the Oscars this Sunday! Enjoy the episode!

In this latest episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast listeners are whisked back in time to the evening of Feb. 20th, 1939, a night where 20,000 Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism — an event largely forgotten from American history. This chilling and distressingly relevant to today’s times event is the subject of the recently released, Oscar nominated short film “A Night At The Garden,” and this episode features an interview with the filmmaker behind the film,” Marshall Curry. Curry’s body of work is remarkable, from the 2002 Oscar-nominated Street Fight (which chronicled Cory Booker's 2002 mayoral campaign), to the Oscar-nominated If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front (about an environmentalist who faced life in prison for burning two timber facilities), and onto his work on Mistaken For Strangers (centering on the band The National). All of Marshall’s films are engaging, revealing to the human condition, socially conscious, and riveting. While Curry’s extensive career and projects are discussed, this episode’s focus was aimed most sharply at “A Night At The Garden,” a distressing documentary short made entirely from archival footage filmed that fateful night. This affecting film transports audiences to this chilling gathering and shines a light on the power of demagoguery and anti-Semitism in the United States, and in this episode Michael and Marshall discuss how the footage was unearthed, the unique way in which Marshall edited and presented the footage, and the alarming relevance of this event, so many years removed from today, to the current political climate in America. Journalist Chris Hedges has spent the past 15 years trying to ring the alarm about the dangers of the U.S. political system and the impact of a corporate and financial coup d’etat that happened long ago. He talks about the growing power of “Christian fascists,” predicts a major financial crash and offers ideas on how to fight back. In 1923, a year after Mussolini took power in Italy, one radical and visionary woman saw his rise for what it was and warned of the grave dangers the world would face if fascism spread. Her name was Clara Zetkin. Acclaimed writer and actor Deborah Eisenberg performs a selection of Zetkin's writing, which was recently published as a book, “Fighting Fascism: How to Struggle and How to Win.” Also, new music from the incredible visual artist and musician Lonnie Holley who is out with a new album called "MITH." Join Michael Moore, Jeremy Scahill, and Marshall Curry for a special post-election screening and discussion about the rise of hate crimes and right-wing political violence in the age of Trump on November 9th, in New York City. Tickets are available here.
