We wrap up our 2021 Summer semester with this extended conversation with returning guest Tom Gathman, better known to outdoor and adventure enthusiasts across the globe as The Real Hiking Viking. A Marines Corps combat veteran, Tom grew up around Penn State football and Joe Paterno - really - his dad produced Joe's famous Holsum Milano bread advertising campaign, which he discussed during our short introductory conversation with him earlier this year. These days, he backpacks all over the world, pitting himself against the elements in long treks far from civilization, but never so far that he misses a Nittany Lions kickoff during the Fall. Sought-after as an outdoor brand ambassador and a die-hard Penn State football fan, Tom also produces the weekly Blue & White Brothers Podcast during the season. In this wide-ranging interview, Chris and Mailman go in-depth with Tom about life on the trail, loving the Lions, and the best way to avoid being eaten by a bear. The Real Hiking Viking's website: http://www.therealhikingviking.com/Tom's previous appearance on the podcast: https://www.statecollege.com/obligatory-psu/spring-21-episode-22-the-award-winner-the-hiking-viking/HOSTED BY: Mike Herr, Chris BuchignaniGUEST: Tom Gathman (The Hiking Viking)
Named one of the greatest runners of all time, Scott Jurek has become a living legend. He has claimed victories in nearly all of ultrarunning's elite trail and road events including the historic 153-mile Spartathlon, the Hardrock 100, the Badwater 135-Mile Ultramarathon, and—his signature race—the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run, which he won a record seven straight times. Scott has also taken the running world by storm with his 2015 Appalachian Trail speed record, averaging nearly 50 miles a day over 46 days—and the United States all-surface record in the 24-Hour Run with 165.7 miles: 6.5 marathons in one day. In this inaugural episode of "Why Am I Listening to This", Zach Davis and Tom Gathman are joined by Scott Jurek to talk about his current Appalachian Trail FKT (Fastest Known Time) attempt. Gloriously bearded year-round thru-hiker Thomas Gathman brings a personality to match his trail name: The Real Hiking Viking. Gathman dishes on his most trusted gear, his favorite beer (all of it), and life where anywhere is home. With his long, bushy beard, booming laugh, and boisterous demeanor, it's hard to miss Thomas Gathman on the trail. And it's even harder to keep up with him. Gathman, who goes by the moniker “The Real Hiking Viking,” said that he covers at least 30 miles per day when he's in the zone. But there’s more than just hiking to this viking. Gathman, a former active-duty Marine, pours himself into more than just sport — think b-movie quotes, college sports, and a carefully curated gear cache. This is the first episode of Backpacker Radio, a podcast about the wonderful world of thru-hiking, brought to you by The Trek. In this first episode, we meet our co-hosts, Zach "Badger" Davis and Juliana "Chaunce" Chauncey, chat with serial thru-hiker Tom Gathman aka The Real Hiking Viking aka Jabba. In this episode, we learn more about The Real Hiking Viking, what he's hiked, what he plans to hike, and why his Instagram Stories are so long. We chat about the potential of mountain bikes being introduced into the wilderness, and thus much of the Pacific Crest Trail. We explore what the class of 2017 voted as the 10 best hostels on the Appalachian Trail. And we do a quick primer on the Badger Sponsorship 2018, the best backpacking gear giveaway for thru-hikers anywhere.
Tom Gathman aka Jabba is @TheRealHikingViking. At the time of this recording, he was attempting a southbound winter thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. In 2013 he thru-hiked the AT with fellow combat veterans in the Warrior Hike and in 2014 the 3,100 mile Continental Divide trail. In this interview, we talk with Tom about his progress thus far, faulty headlines, and whether his beard has contributed to his success as The Real Hiking Viking.
Tom Gathman began his latest hike on the Appalachian Trail December 4, 2015 in Maine. It has taken him about 3 months to hike a little over 900 miles to get to the Delaware River Gap area. Cindy Ross literally plucked him from the trail to share his story with us. Tom met Cindy Ross on his 30th birthday. He was hiking the trail with another marine. They were seeking a journey and an adventure, looking for some happiness. Tom says they were, “seeking a new path in life literally and figuratively”. Cindy and her husband Todd Gladfelter spent their whole life hiking. Cindy share this quote from Roberto Clemente, “Anytime we have an opportunity to help another human being and we don’t we are wasting our time here on earth”. It was her motivation to start the non-profit, ‘Riverhouse PA’ to help veterans and their families find peace in the outdoors and begin their first 5,000 steps toward healing. Learn more about the opportunities and programs at www.riverhousepa.com. Tom says there is a big community out on the trail. People from all different walks of life become a second family support network. He adds that hiking the trail does not have much to do with the destination, it is more about all the miles… “People find their path in life while hiking the trail.” Tom has been hiking for the last 3 years… He hasn’t stopped. He says he loves the outdoors and the activity. It is a simple life! Tom Gathman went directly back to the trail to continue his thru hike to Georgia and he is very happy.
