At the start of 2024, 55 year old ultrarunner Hilde Dosogne set out to achieve the world record of being the first woman to complete a marathon distance run every single day of the year. On December 31st of last year, she clocked her 366th 26.2 mile run (it was a leap year, which means she had one extra day to run) and her record was verified by Guinness in March. And we had questions, mostly how? How did she stay healthy? (Spoiler, she didn't, but kept going.) Is she managing menopause symptoms? (Yep.) What does she want others to take from her feat? (The power of the mind and so much more.) This week we share our conversation about her journey to set that Guinness World Record.Hilde Dosogne is a Belgian ultrarunner who started running at 41 and found her stride as a world-class endurance athlete quickly thereafter. Her career highlights include 100km Race Belgian Champion in 2023; 4th place in Ultrabalaton, a 210km race around Lake Balaton in Hungary; finishing Spartathlon in 2022 and 2023, and Marathon Des Sables, a 250km stage race in the Moroccan desert in 2021. She is also a mother of four and a bio-engineer. In 2024, she set a Guinness World Record by running 366 consecutive marathons in support of breast cancer research. Hilde is dedicated to pushing the limits of human endurance and proving what we're capable of when we set our mind to it. Running. You might say it's like walking but faster... Now imagine running for 26.2 miles! That would be a marathon, right? Sure. Now double it. 52.4 miles!? That would qualify as an ultramarathon! But we're not stopping there. Special guest, Cabe Waldrop, tells us a little story about a man named Gordy Ainsleigh who ran 100 miles (in a race for HORSES) to see what the human body, some buttermilk, and a little gumption could do. We're talking about the FIRST ULTRAMARATHON! Plus, the Mouthgarf Report and I See What You Did There! I am thrilled to have Maree Connor on the podcast for the second time. Maree recently returned from running the iconic Spartathlon Ultramarathon - a 246km journey from Athens to Sparta along the route run by Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians. Maree has achieved so much in this sport in such a few short years, and has established herself as one of Australia's best ultramarathon runners. A 2 x time Australian representative, Maree has a long list of achievements including 2 x wins at the Brisbane Trail Ultra 100 miler, 2 x wins at Coast to Kosciusko 240km, 3rd place Badwater 135 mile (including being the 10th faster female ever to finish Badwater) and so much more. Late release this week but better late then never! We start off talking about Mike Wardian completing his Appalachian Trail through run in 60 days. He had to battle the aftermath of hurricane Helene in order to get it done. We discuss the devastation of the hurricane and also the Yeti folks who pitched in and helped the people of Damascus after the Yeti 100 was cancelled. Then we look into the 153 mile Spartathlon road race in Greece. Camille Herron was back to defend her course record from last year but she had a lot going on with the wiki controversy. She DNF'd and we haven't heard much about why but I can imagine she was mentally distracted. We go over race results from The Bear 100, Dick Collins Firetrails, Flagstaff Sky Peaks, Mt. Taylor 50K, West Line Winder 50K, and Heritage 50K. Meredith Hughes set a new women's self-supported FKT on the Colorado trail west to east collegiate west. Courtney Dauwalter is racing in France this weekend and will be going for the outright win at Nice Cote d'Azure 115K which is no longer a Western States golden ticket race. Ever wondered what it's like to run a 50K race with unexpected challenges? This week on Hobby Jogger, we recount our wild adventure at the Grindstone 50K with our friend Jason Cox. From a deceptive hornet's nest encounter that led to a hilarious debate on bee sting benefits, to Rob's battle with a mid-race ankle injury, we've got stories that blend humor with the grit of ultra running. The oppressive heat and humidity only ramped up the difficulty, making the race a true test of endurance and spirit. Tune in for some laughs, lessons, and a few unexpected takeaways from this demanding course. But the journey doesn't stop there. We also dissect our tumultuous UTMB race day, sharing the hard-hitting reality of cramping and hydration slip-ups that led to a DNF. We break down the critical errors, like neglecting electrolyte supplies, and discuss the impact of high humidity on performance. Amid our candid reflections, we'll critique the post-race amenities and highlight the stunning, albeit poorly organized, course. Plus, get the scoop on Camille's Spartathlon saga and enjoy a sneak peek of our upcoming chat with Dan, the race director of the Laurel Highlands Fall Classic. And don't miss the light-hearted moments, including a Blink-182 joke courtesy of Jason's daughter.

It is one of the toughest ultramarathons to finish. In Part 1 of this series, episode 88, the story was told how Spartathlon was born in 1982, the brainchild of an officer in the Royal Air Force, John Foden. The 1982 trial run set the stage for the establishment of the Spartathlon race. The race's 1983 inaugural year is covered in this part won by Yiannis Kouros of Greece.
