This year is the 45th running of the Columbus Marathon and it was great to catch up with the race director, Darris Blackford. He has run more than 200 marathons and other ultramarathons. I have been wanting to have Darris on since his wife, Star Blackford, was on Episode 3 of Weathering The Run. We chatted a lot about the ins and outs of race directing and then about his extensive experience of running through dangerously cold conditions along with running across Death Valley during Badwater. If you are interested in running the 45th Columbus Marathon, be sure to sign up before it sells out!
In this Episode, Izzy B talk to Catra Corbett (Dirt Diva), an experienced trail and ultra-runner who shares her journey into trail running and ultra marathons. Catra recounts how she began running after getting sober and rapidly progressed from a 10K to marathons, trail races, and eventually ultra distances. She highlights her first experiences with 50K, 50-mile, and 100-mile races, and delves into her passion for solo mountain projects and FKTs (fastest known times). Catra also discusses her numerous accomplishments in 200 and 300-mile races such as the Badwater 135, Tahoe 200, and other endurance challenges. She emphasizes the importance of incorporating sleep and proper nutrition in ultra races, citing specific vegan food choices that keep her fueled. Moreover, the she shares her training regimen, which includes regular gym workouts, plyometrics, and running high-mileage weeks. Lastly, she introduces her adorable trail running dachshunds and talks about their contributions to her adventures. The runner closes with words of wisdom, urging listeners to act now on their dreams and not to wait for the future.Instagram: @dirtdiva333 Book: Reborn on the Run: My Journey from Addiction to Ultramarathons

In this deeply inspiring episode of The Better Than Rich Show, Andrew Biggs sits down with U.S. Navy veteran and ultra-endurance athlete Aaron Hale. After losing his sight and hearing in a roadside bomb explosion in Afghanistan, Aaron could have given up. Instead, he ran 135 miles through Death Valley, started a business, launched a podcast, and now helps others build bulletproof resilience in their lives. This episode is a masterclass in overcoming adversity, turning pain into purpose, and choosing to live fully—no matter what you've been through.
When your running routes become maps of heartbreak, how do you find your way forward? Ultra runner John Calabrese takes us through his raw, emotional journey of rediscovery after losing both his relationship and running partnership in one devastating blow.John's story begins with a dream scenario for many runners—falling for a fellow ultra athlete who shared his passion, crewed his races, and built memories along countless miles of trails. Together, they conquered grueling challenges like running JFK 50 and the Philadelphia Marathon in a single weekend. But when their relationship crumbled, John found himself not only heartbroken but also stripped of his running identity and community. The collapse was total—pneumonia followed emotional exhaustion, friendships changed, and suddenly the routes that once brought joy became painful reminders of what he'd lost. Compounding his struggle, John and his ex continued living practically within sight of each other, making clean breaks impossible. Most devastating was losing a close running friend to an unexpected death around the same time, leaving John without his two most important running companions. What makes this episode particularly powerful is the honesty with which John discusses rebuilding. From struggling to find motivation to run alone again to carefully navigating race schedules to avoid painful encounters, he reveals the messy reality of healing within a close-knit running community. His journey back to consistent 70-mile weeks hasn't been linear, but it has been transformative. Now focused on giving back through Ainsley's Angels and targeting iconic challenges like Badwater 135, John is redefining his relationship with running on his own terms. His story reminds us that sometimes the longest ultramarathon isn't on any race calendar—it's the journey back to ourselves after loss.Have you ever had to rebuild your relationship with running after a major life change? Share your story in the comments and connect with others who understand the struggle of finding your stride again when the path forward seems impossible to navigate. Phil Pinti is about 18 days out from toeing the start line of the Arizona Monster 300!! Once the gun goes off, he will have a week to take on this insanely long adventure that traverses the deserts of southern Arizona. This will be it's inaugaral year and is organized by the awesome Candice Burt and Destination Trails. In this episode, we talk about his mindset a month out and his training up until this point before being joined by Randy Stephenson, Phil's crew chief for this event. We also talk about the absolutely beautiful Route 66 Ultra put on by Heather and Marshall Ulrich, which is a race I HIGHLY recommend people check out! (My experience wasn't as beautiful but that had nothing to do with this amazing community of runners and the beautiful event they put on!) Welcome back to another episode of The Matthew Mania Podcast. Today, we have an extraordinary guest—someone who has built a career not just on success, but on significance. While many know him as a maverick in real estate, his true impact goes far beyond luxury homes. Frank McKinney is a philanthropist, an extreme endurance athlete, a bestselling author of NINE books, and a man who lives life on the edge—both in business and in his mission to help others. Frank is the founder of the Caring House Project, a nonprofit that has built entire self-sustaining villages in Haiti, providing homes, schools, medical support, and hope to thousands of people living in extreme poverty. Instead of just writing a check, Frank is on the ground, making sure every project changes lives in a lasting way. But his dedication to pushing limits doesn't stop there. Frank is also an ultra-endurance athlete who has competed in some of the most grueling footraces on the planet, including the infamous Badwater 135—known as the 'world's toughest footrace'—where runners battle 135 miles through Death Valley in extreme heat. His mindset, resilience, and drive to take on challenges—whether in the desert or in the fight against poverty—are truly inspiring. Frank competed in the Boca's Ballroom Battle in 2015, inspiring me to compete in 2018. You can see me compete https://www.matthewmania.com/matthew-mania/ Today, we're going to talk about what fuels his passion for giving back, what keeps him running (literally and figuratively), and how he blends purpose with adventure in everything he does. If you're looking for motivation to dream bigger, do more, and push beyond your limits, this is an episode you don't want to miss. Wall Street Journal, CNN, Fortune, Barrons, HGTV Frank McKinney is a true modern-day Renaissance man who has pushed the limits of success in his every endeavor. His early years were not very promising: upon attending his 4th high school in 4 years (he was asked to leave the first 3), and seven stints in juvenile detention, he earned his high school diploma with a 1.8 GPA. With $50 in his pocket and without the benefit of further education, he left his native Indiana for Florida in search of his life's highest calling.Today, Frank's life is a testament to the power of aspiration to create a completely new reality. As a real estate artist he has created and sold 44 oceanfront mansions on spec, with an average price of $14 million. Frank recently announced he was un-retiring and coming back to create more real estate artistry! See two short films that were just made about Frank's exciting comeback! As a philanthro-capitalist, Frank has built 30 self-sustaining villages over the last 20 years in Haiti, providing 13,600+ children and their families with homes, schools, clinics, community centers, churches, renewable food and clean water, and means to support themselves.A best-selling author, actor, and keynote speaker, Frank has written seven books in six genres, with the title, premise and cover for his 8th book in his 7th genre being revealed at an exciting stunt Frank will perform on Friday the 13th of January, 2023! Frank has starred in four movies, and keynoted before audiences of ten to ten thousand around the world.Physically, Frank has pushed the limit of his body by racing in the Badwater 135-mile Ultramarathon 12x in the scorching summer in Death Valley, California, a race referred to by National Geographic as “the world's toughest footrace.”As with all of his books, Frank wrote his latest bestseller Aspire! in his Delray Beach, Florida, oceanfront treehouse office that has spectacular views and includes a bamboo desk, shower, bathroom, sink, air-conditioning, hardwood floors, cedar walls, a loft with a king size bed, and a suspension bridge to the master bedroom in the main house—that's Frank's commute to and from work!Today Frank and Nilsa, his wife of 32 years, split their time between Delray Beach and their “glass cottage” in the mountains of Canton, North Carolina. Kicking off Season 4 and ringing in 2025 with a cool cat that has widened my musical lens TENFOLD, Mr. John “Johnny Gowanus” Hennegan. Although I've known John since the early 80's and we've run with the same group of guys over the years, I had zero clue just how broad his taste in music is, so a big shoutout to Erik “Swede” Larson for suggesting I invite John to be a guest on GD&F in the first place! You were 100% right, Swede! John reminded me just how much Run DMC and The Beastie Boys can rock the house, and he introduced me to names like Fugazi, and LCD Soundsystem, neither of which I had ever even heard of but glad I know now.John also happens to be one of the only people that I know who grew up in and around the horseracing industry. Learn how John and his wingman, his brother Brad, have created epic films covering topics including the world's toughest footrace, Badwater 135, and Masters of Mini Golf, and The World Beard and Mustache Championship to name a few.Join us, and let's see where the energy takes us!Beastie Boys - Root Down https://music.apple.com/us/album/root-down/724771323?i=724771965Run DMC - Rock Box https://music.apple.com/us/album/rock-box/281812827?i=281812954Aerosmith - Sweet Emotion https://music.apple.com/us/album/sweet-emotion/1660108657?i=1660109293Ian MacKaye interviewhttps://youtu.be/GiE-jX-VLSk?si=plhpFJt95uk4KwRaFugazi - Waiting Room https://music.apple.com/us/album/waiting-room/49249845?i=49249816LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punkhttps://music.apple.com/us/album/daft-punk-is-playing-at-my-house/696523434?i=696523492Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetimehttps://music.apple.com/us/album/once-in-a-lifetime-live-2023-remaster/1694810554?i=1694811783

What does it take to have an amazing race in a type of terrain that is a different style from what you're normally used to? For Jeff Mogavero, an accomplished mountain ultrarunner for On Running, he looked to answer that question by racing in the Javelina Jundred 100 miler, just months after completing UTMB. And even though the flatter course was relatively unique territory for Jeff based on his past races, he was able to finish second place and win a Golden Ticket to Western States 100! How did he do it? In this episode he shares his training, race strategy, hydration strategy, and mindset that all led to his special day in the desert. We cover things such as: How to go from mountain training to flat training Optimizing mindset both in training and in the race How to nail hydration (even if it has been a struggle point in the past) How to execute a plan in a race, even when the conditions are tough How to enjoy the process amidst hard training Huge thank you to Jeff for coming on the show!
