This episode is supported by Kava Haven, Goodr, and Batch. Today on the podcast, I'm excited to welcome Megan Eckert. Meg recently finished third overall among women at the 2025 Cocodona 250, running one of the fastest times in race history. She's an ultrarunner, coach, teacher, and one of the most accomplished endurance athletes in the sport. In 2025, she ran 603 miles, surpassing 600 miles in six days and setting a world record pending ratification. She also finished second at Badwater 135 and continues to push the boundaries of what's possible in ultrarunning. One of the most fascinating parts of Meg's story is that she didn't discover running until she was 29 years old. What started with a goal of breaking two hours in her first half marathon quickly grew into a passion for ultras, trail running, and eventually some of the longest races in the world. In this conversation, Meg shares how she approaches races as long as Cocodona, why she focuses on competing against herself rather than other runners, how she balances teaching sixth-grade math with elite ultrarunning, and what she's learned from spending days at a time moving through mountains, deserts, and remote wilderness. We also talk about sleep strategy, hallucinations, training for six-day races, the value of recovery, and why she continues to pursue goals that have a real chance of failure. Thank you to Mount to Coast for supporting this episode. Their new C1 Super Trainer is designed for long miles, everyday training, and durability that goes the distance. Learn more at mounttocoast.com. If you enjoy this conversation, please share it with a friend and leave a rating and review. It's one of the best ways to help new listeners discover the show. Their C1 shoe is designed with long-distance comfort in mind, offering substantial cushioning that holds up over extended efforts on the road. Most of us never stop to ask who we really are. We just keep wearing whatever mask the day hands us — the work one, the friend one, the parent one. Do that long enough, and the mask becomes the face. You wake up living a borrowed identity and wonder why nothing lights you up anymore. Today I want to help you find the real one underneath. Once you know who you are, your vision stops being a slogan and starts pulling you out of bed. Press play and let's dig in. Featured Story My friend Croy ran across America — a hundred marathons in just over a hundred days, coast to coast. There was a TED Talk, a book, the whole thing. Then the running stopped, and so did he. For a couple of years, he drifted, trying to figure out who he was without the miles. Then, six months ago, he showed up on a call and surprised all of us. He said, "My identity is that of an adventurer." He's retaking his Badwater record across Death Valley this August. The moment he accepted who he'd always been, the drifting ended. Now he can't wait to get up and run. Important Points Your vision doesn't lead your identity — your identity leads your vision, so get clear on who you really are first. Whatever mask you wear day after day slowly becomes who you actually are, so choose the role you play carefully. Nothing you do is purely for someone else — own that it starts with you, and the old guilt finally loses its grip. Memorable Quotes Your legacy is being built right now — whatever you do today becomes your legacy someday, so go build it on purpose. Wear a surface-level role day after day, and you begin to believe it, until eventually it quietly becomes who you are. There is nothing you do exclusively for somebody else — own that it's for you, and you stop burning out and quitting. Scott's Three-Step Approach Start by naming your true identity — the who-you-are that lives in your heart, not the mask you put on for the office. Then let that identity cast your vision, asking who you help, how, and why, until the vague slogan turns specific. Finally, act on that vision every day, so the doing reinforces who you are and fires up your engine to get out of bed. Chapters 0:02 - Today is all about your identity and vision 1:27 - Firing up the anticipation engine that pulls you up 2:58 - Why "I just want to help a million people" falls short 5:26 - The mask you wear long enough becomes who you are 8:14 - Your legacy is ego-driven, and that's okay 9:33 - The man who knew his identity in a heartbeat 11:54 - Croy trades drifting for an adventurer's life Connect With Me Search for the Daily Boost on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify If you enjoy the Daily Boost, you might like Notes From Scott. Send us Fan MailIn episode #184, we bring back pro mountain runner Adam Kimble to talk about his incredible year of racing so far, including breaking course records at Badwater Cape Fear 50k and Outlands Endurance Races 50k, winning American River 50 miler, and most recently a DNF at Cocodona 250, and the strategies he employed, dealing with injury, and lessons learned.Key Points:How to adapt training and nutrition for different race lengths and terrains. The importance of race simulationsManaging sleep deprivationThe significance of course familiarity and learning from race DNFs.Practical tips for hydration: fluid strategies, salt intake, and hyperhydration protocols.Upcoming races and injury managementAdam Kimble is a professional ultrarunner, race director, motivational speaker and running coach from Truckee, CA. In 2016, Adam ran 2,500 miles over the course of 60 days to cross the USA on foot. Subsequently, in November of 2016, he successfully completed a 60-day journey alone in the wilderness of South America to become winner of Discovery Channel's survivalist show, The Wheel. Following that adventure, Adam set two prominent Fastest Known Times (FKTs): in 2017 he became part of the first duo to ever run self-supported on foot across Great Britain (Scotland, England and Wales) while summiting the highest peak in each country along the way; and in 2020, he set the supported FKT on the Tahoe Rim Trail—a 171-mile circumnavigation of Lake Tahoe.  Most recently in 2025, Adam finished 4th overall and ran one of the Top-10 fastest times ever at the historic Badwater 135.  Adam's life mission is to push himself past his perceived limits and achieve the impossible. His calling is to share what he has learned and help others grow in their journey so as to push through the ceiling and achieve their own 'impossible'.Please note that this podcast is created strictly for educational purposes and should never be used for medical diagnosis or treatment.FREE RESOURCE:Recovery Protocol: https://mailchi.mp/nutritional-revolution.com/recovery-protocolHydration 101: https://mailchi.mp/nutritional-revolution/hydration101FOLLOW ADAM:IG: https://www.instagram.com/adamkimble818/Web: www.adamkimble.comMENTIONED:Episode 81: https://nutritional-revolution.com/podcasts/ultrarunner-and-coach-adam-kimble/Episode 147: https://nutritional-revolution.com/podcasts/badwater-breakthrough-adam-kimbles-journey-at-the-worlds-toughest-race/Run Gum: https://amzn.to/4v6mTnvMaurten Caffeine Gels: https://amzn.to/4utpwQgScience In Sport Caffeine Gum: https://go.shopmy.us/p-59556271Creatine: https://nutritional-revolution.com/product/thorne-creatine/MORE NRApply to work with Kyla → https://p.bttr.to/3ZrwzcFUse code NEWPOD10 for 10% off our meal plans → https://nutritional-revolution.com/products/CONNECT Instagram → www.instagram.com/nutritionalrevolutionSponsorship inquiries → kyla.c@nutritional-revolution.comInterested in having your biomarkers or nutrigenomics checked? Oz Pearlman is a well-known mentalist-entertainer and a less-well-known marathon and ultramarathon runner. A moment later, he was caught in the swarm of Secret Service agents who stormed in to protect Trump, and lead him to safety. In this podcast, Pearlman chillingly describes the scene, including the fear he felt for himself and his wife and friends in attendance. He also talks about his early days in marathon running when he knew virtually nothing about the sport, and what he needed to learn before he became more successful. What if the worst thing that ever happened to you turned out to be the very thing that made you unstoppable? In this episode, Aaron Hale, retired Army Staff Sergeant, EOD Team Leader, speaker, podcaster, real estate investor, and small business owner, shares one of the most extraordinary stories of resilience you will ever hear. In 2011, an IED blast in Afghanistan took his eyes. Four years later, bacterial meningitis took what was left of his hearing. He is now both blind and deaf, and he just ran 205 miles across Kenya and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, believed to be the first blind-deaf person to ever accomplish that feat. Aaron doesn't call himself a victim. He calls his injuries divine direction. And through his podcast, speaking, and the way he shows up every single day, he is busy proving that the story of your struggle can become the blueprint for someone else's survival.   [00:04:20] Just Back from Africa: The Seed to Summit Trek Ran 205 miles from Mombasa, Kenya to the base of Mount Kilimanjaro over nine days Climbed the tallest peak in Africa, completing a full seed to summit expedition Believes he is the first blind-deaf person to ever accomplish this Fulfilled a plan made 11 years earlier, interrupted by the meningitis that stole his hearing [00:06:20] What He Does Now Speaker, podcaster, real estate investor, and co-owner of Extra Ordinary Delights, an artisan chocolate company Calls himself an excuse killer; uses adversity as fuel, not an anchor Hosts the Point of Impact podcast to show people how to become their best selves [00:09:00] Blind, Deaf, and Still Showing Up Lost his eyes in an IED blast in 2011 while serving as an Army EOD technician Bacterial meningitis in 2015 took the rest of his hearing and destroyed his inner ear balance Uses a cochlear implant connected directly to his auditory nerve to communicate [00:12:20] How He Got Here: From Navy Chef to Army Bomb Technician Got asked to leave college, joined the Navy, and became a chef to a three-star admiral in Italy Left cooking, joined the Army, and became an EOD bomb technician Was on his third deployment when the IED blast happened, just days after seeing his firstborn son turn one [00:14:40] The Relationship That Changed Everything: Kyle Kyle, a fellow EOD team leader, was injured two weeks before Aaron and was already at Walter Reed when Aaron arrived He wheeled into Aaron's room, made him feel the beard he had grown out of defiance, and cracked jokes about his condition He was at full spirit just two weeks after losing a leg That moment showed Aaron he had no excuse to quit; warriors up and down those halls were all still fighting [00:19:20] What Inspires Him: The Gift of a Story In the military, relationships mean survival; you trust the people on your left and right with your life After his injury, he felt like he lost that brotherhood, but it transformed into something new He was given the gift of a story and the ability to flick the light switch on for others Getting to help someone see their situation differently is both altruistic and deeply personally rewarding [00:22:40] The Relationships That Opened the World: Eric Weihenmayer and Lonnie Bedwell Began searching online for blind people living actively: blind plus outdoors, blind plus fitness, blind plus anything Found Eric Weihenmayer, the first blind person to climb all seven summits; went climbing with him in the Peruvian Andes at 19,000 feet Found Lonnie Bedwell, the first blind person to kayak the entire Grand Canyon solo; went kayaking with him too These men took his thinking from a peephole to a bay window; he had been thinking far too small [00:26:00] What That Perspective Unlocked Registered for four marathons before ever running longer than a 10K Three of those qualified him for the Boston Marathon, which he ran in 2015 In 2023 became the first blind-deaf person to finish Badwater 135, the toughest foot race on Earth [00:29:40] The Impact He Got to Make: Kilimanjaro with 25 Friends When he arrived at Kilimanjaro, 25 friends, family, and associates had come to be part of the climb Many had never done anything like it; his story inspired them to say yes A close friend from his military real estate mastermind, someone he had spoken with weekly for years, climbed it right alongside him [00:31:00] Aaron's Marathon Training Day Reached out to Team Red, White and Blue for help training for his first marathon They organized a weekly Sunday run called Aaron's Marathon Training Day, open to anyone at any pace Week after week more people showed up; it outgrew him and became a full community movement He got to be the catalyst; it kept snowballing long after it needed him to carry it   KEY QUOTES "The difference between a rut and a grave is how long you lay there. I did not want to get stuck on the couch." — Aaron Hale "Someday the story of your struggle may be the blueprint for somebody else's survival." — Aaron Hale "We can't control the blast, but we can control the next step. On today's show the conversation takes us to Italy where we have an excellent chat with ultra runner Michele Graglia. I had never met Michele before but the conversation really flowed and we ended speaking for over an hour! Michelle is an elite ultramarathoner who transitioned into the sport after a successful career as a professional model. He discusses his upbringing in the Italian Alps, explaining how his childhood connection to the mountains eventually led to leave the high-fashion industry for the world of extreme racing. Graglia details his victories in prestigious events like Badwater 135 and his record-setting run across the Atacama Desert, emphasizing the mental discipline and logistical precision required for such feats. The conversation explores the evolving landscape of ultrarunning, touching on the financial challenges professional athletes face as the sport grows more commercial. He also recounts a harrowing encounter with an Arctic wolf during a race in the Yukon, illustrating the profound solitude and primal nature of her adventures. Finally, Graglia shares his future aspirations, including her current training for the Tor des Géants, a notoriously difficult 220-mile mountain race. For the FREE BOOK GIVEAWAY ENTER: HEREOstrich Running: HEREHettas Running: HEREFull Transcript: HERESupport the showSubscribe to Running Scared Media wherever you get your podcasts for more episodes!RunningScaredMedia.comVisit our shop to purchase our jogcasts and other merchEmail us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:Instagram @runningscaredmediaJoin our FB Running Group

SWall Street Journal,  CNN, Fortune, Barrons, HGTV Frank McKinney is a true modern-day Renaissance man who has pushed the limits of success in his every endeavor. His early years were not very promising: upon attending his 4th high school in 4 years (he was asked to leave the first 3), and seven stints in juvenile detention, he earned his high school diploma with a 1.8 GPA. With $50 in his pocket and without the benefit of further education, he left his native Indiana for Florida in search of his life's highest calling.Today, Frank's life is a testament to the power of aspiration to create a completely new reality. As a real estate artist he has created and sold 44 oceanfront mansions on spec, with an average price of $14 million. Frank recently announced he was un-retiring and coming back to create more real estate artistry! See two short films that were just made about Frank's exciting comeback! As a philanthro-capitalist, Frank has built 30 self-sustaining villages over the last 20 years in Haiti, providing 13,600+ children and their families with homes, schools, clinics, community centers, churches, renewable food and clean water, and means to support themselves.A best-selling author, actor, and keynote speaker, Frank has written seven books in six genres, with the title, premise and cover for his 8th book in his 7th genre being revealed at an exciting stunt Frank will perform on Friday the 13th of January, 2023! Frank has starred in four movies, and keynoted before audiences of ten to ten thousand around the world.Physically, Frank has pushed the limit of his body by racing in the Badwater 135-mile Ultramarathon 12x in the scorching summer in Death Valley, California, a race referred to by National Geographic as “the world's toughest footrace.”As with all of his books, Frank wrote his latest bestseller Aspire! in his Delray Beach, Florida, oceanfront treehouse office that has spectacular views and includes a bamboo desk, shower, bathroom, sink, air-conditioning, hardwood floors, cedar walls, a loft with a king size bed, and a suspension bridge to the master bedroom in the main house—that's Frank's commute to and from work!Today Frank and Nilsa, his wife of 34 years, split their time between Delray Beach and their “glass cottage” in the mountains of Canton, North Carolina. #772: GUEST EPISODE — The Boring Work That Actually Wins: Process, Coaching & the Discipline of Greatness

Coach Code Podcast

Episode Overview In this guest appearance on the Elite Real Estate Podcast, John Kitchens joins host Jimmy to unpack a powerful conversation about leadership, discipline, coaching, and why the "boring work" is often the secret behind extraordinary success. From lessons learned studying great coaches like Nick Saban to the mindset required to run marathons, Ironmans, and eventually pursue the legendary Badwater 135 ultramarathon, John shares how consistent systems, trusted coaching, and relentless commitment to the process create long-term results. They also dive into the parallels between elite athletics and building a thriving real estate business. The agents who succeed aren't chasing shiny tactics—they're executing the fundamentals over and over again. If you're an agent, entrepreneur, or leader looking to break through the noise and focus on what actually works, this episode is a reminder that greatness is built in the quiet, repetitive, often overlooked work behind the scenes. As John puts it: the real magic isn't what happens on game day—it's what happens in the days leading up to it. Key Topics Covered The Power of the "Boring Work" Why mundane, repeatable processes produce consistent success The parallels between elite sports and real estate performance Why the fundamentals always outperform shiny new tactics Studying Greatness: Lessons from Nick Saban Why the best leaders produce other leaders The discipline and attention to detail behind championship teams What business leaders can learn from elite sports programs Deep Conversations in a Distracted World Why long-form conversations are making a comeback The growing importance of trust and authentic human connection How meaningful dialogue builds stronger relationships and businesses Unreasonable Hospitality & Client Experience The future of business is exceptional client experiences Lessons from books like Unreasonable Hospitality, Giftology, and Hug Your Customers Why service-driven leadership creates raving fans The Importance of Process & Faith in the Journey Why success requires trusting the process before seeing results The difference between imitating proven systems vs. trying to innovate too early How entrepreneurs sabotage themselves by skipping foundational steps The Role of Coaching in Growth Why elite performers surround themselves with multiple coaches How the right mentor helps you avoid costly mistakes The power of having someone who calls out your blind spots The Marathon That Changed Everything Why John decided to run the New York City Marathon before turning 40 Lessons learned from pushing through physical and mental limits How that experience led to the pursuit of Ironman competitions From Ironman to Ultramarathons Completing multiple Ironman races through structured coaching and training The discipline required to prepare for endurance events Why the training is often harder than the race itself The Ultimate Goal: Badwater 135 What makes Badwater one of the toughest endurance races in the world Why building a "resume of races" is required to qualify The strategy behind preparing for a 135-mile ultramarathon through Death Valley The Importance of Lifelong Growth Why personal development is a non-negotiable for high performers John's favorite interview question for hiring team members: "What's the last book you read and why did you choose it?" Why learning daily keeps leaders ahead of the curve Resources & Mentions The Third Door – Alex Banayan Unreasonable Hospitality – Will Guidara Giftology – John Ruhlin Hug Your Customers – Jack Mitchell Joe Rogan Podcast Episode with Robert Rodriguez Badwater 135 Ultramarathon Final Takeaway Most people chase shortcuts. The best performers embrace the process. Whether you're building a real estate business, training for an Ironman, or pursuing any ambitious goal, the formula is the same: find a proven system, commit to the fundamentals, and trust the process long enough for results to show up. #214 - What if the lowest point isn't a dead end but a doorway? That's the charge at the heart of our conversation with ultrarunner and dance dad John Calabrese, who traded alcohol and anxiety for sunrise miles, grassroots races, and a community that made space for the mess and the miracle. John takes us from Navy service during 9/11 to the long, uneasy middle where divorce and two DUIs forced a reckoning—and how running became a daily anchor, not a quick fix.We go deep on the mental game that defines ultrarunning: why DNFs can be teachers, how to crawl out of the pain cave when dark thoughts hit at mile 70, and the surprising ways anger can be channeled into forward motion. John opens up about balancing training with fatherhood, building a life around dance competitions and last‑minute race entries, and the unglamorous logistics that make or break 100‑milers—drop bags, headlamps, sleep deprivation, and the sacred joy of seeing another headlamp after hours alone in the woods. He shares strategies from the Wild Oak 100, lessons from finishing and failing there, and the rule of thumb that keeps him honest about cutoffs and recovery. We also explore the state of the sport: the pull between UTMB-era spectacle and the magic of low-cost, community-built events where a car trunk doubles as an aid station. John admits he has a road runner's engine and a trail runner's soul, dreams out loud about Badwater, Western States, and maybe one day Barkley, and makes the case that purpose beats pace every time. If you're feeling stuck—whether with alcohol, identity, or the grind of daily life—his message is simple and fierce: don't quit the thing you love, take one step, and run your race on your terms.Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs a nudge, and leave a review with your favorite takeaway—what mental trick gets you through your hardest miles?Be sure and give John a follow on Instagram @breezytrailhead. What if you didn't start running until later in life — and still became one of the best ultrarunners in the world? In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, I sit down with Megan Eckert, one of the most consistent and resilient athletes in ultrarunning today.Megan was voted 3rd overall in the 2025 World Ultrarunner of the Year rankings, became the first woman in history to run over 600 miles in a six-day race, finished 2nd at Badwater 135, and went 383+ miles at Big's Backyard Ultra — all after starting running at age 29.We talk about what it actually takes to endure at the highest level — mentally, emotionally, and physically — and why fun, focus, and simplicity might matter more than most training plans. In this episode, we dive into:• How Megan went from fearing her first race to thriving in multi-day ultras• Why focus — not motivation — is the real mental toughness skill• How to approach massive races like Cocodona 250 without overcomplicating training• What backyard ultras and fixed-time events teach you about yourself• Why making training fun is a performance enhancer (not a distraction)• The mindset shift that helps athletes push through pain without breaking• How she recovers between massive races — including an underrated recovery tool• Why finding your people in the sport can change everythingWhether you're training for your first ultra or chasing your biggest endurance goal yet, this conversation is packed with perspective, wisdom, and reminders of why we run in the first place.

When water systems fail, the damage is not the same for everyone. In Flint, the deepest harm lives in children's brains. In other cities, the damage is buried in pipes, mains, and hydrants. In this episode, Arthur Busch examines what really gets damaged when public water systems fail—and why the law treats those harms very differently. The episode opens in Flint, Michigan, with the story of Lee Anne Walters and her twin sons, who lost developmental skills after drinking lead-contaminated tap water. Their experience illustrates what lead exposure looks like up close: not statistics or charts, but children who had to relearn colors, numbers, and basic coordination, and who continue to struggle years later. This is the most enduring harm of bad water—damage carried inside a child's body and brain for life. From there, the episode draws a critical distinction between human damage and infrastructure damage. In Flint, the deepest injury is neurological and developmental, raising issues of justice, lifetime support, and accountability. In other cities, such as Miramar, Florida, and Greenville, South Carolina, the primary damage has been mechanical—corroded copper plumbing, failing ductile iron pipe, clogged mains, and compromised fire flow. Those cases focus on replacing pipe, repairing systems, and preventing the next failure. The episode explores how these different kinds of harm move through the legal system. In Flint, class actions and civil rights claims seek compensation for children's injuries, medical monitoring, special education needs, and property loss. In Miramar and Greenville, lawsuits target cities, engineers, and manufacturers over defective design, testing failures, and pipe performance, aiming to shift future repair costs away from ratepayers.Along the way, the episode examines how water crises have become a litigation business model, with large contingency-fee cases driving accountability only after harm has already occurred. It also looks at how new Lead and Copper Rule requirements are reshaping evidence, documentation, and liability—often after cities have already gambled with aging infrastructure.Ultimately, this episode asks a hard policy question: Is our system designed to protect the public, or mainly to manage liability after failure? Pipes can be replaced. Children cannot. The choices judges, regulators, and lawmakers make about prevention, accountability, and funding will determine whether future crises are stopped early—or simply paid for later. This episode is part of The Mitten Channel, a Michigan-based podcast network examining law, public policy, and life in America's industrial communities. A full transcript follows.

The Daily Boost | Coaching You Need. Success You Deserve.

You've got clarity. You know what you want. But do you actually understand what's driving the whole thing? Most people focus on goal-setting and never dig into the psychology underneath. Today I'm breaking down five principles that drive every outcome you're chasing. This is mastermind level thinking that applies everywhere. Your business. Your employees. Your kids. Your personal goals. Once you understand these fundamentals, your goals stop being struggles and start becoming systems that actually work. Fair warning: you might need to listen to this one a few times. Featured Story I've got a friend who's about to run across Death Valley. We're talking 140 miles through Badwater in 130-degree heat with 25,000 feet of vertical climb. Yesterday I asked him what his outcome was. He said he needs to climb the mountain because that's part of the route. I stopped him right there. That's not your outcome. Your outcome is to break the world record. If you climb the mountain, great. But you might get tired on the other side and stop. The mountain is a step. Breaking the record is the outcome. That distinction changes everything about how you approach what you're doing. Important Points Most people confuse their actionable steps with their actual outcome, which guarantees confusion and missed goals. The true value isn't the goal itself but what achieving it creates in your life, business, or legacy right now. Everything you build should scale without breaking your peaceful base or creating more work than it's actually worth. Memorable Quotes "Life should not be as hard as it is. I've never believed it, never liked it, so I decided to hack my way better." "Know your outcome, not a vague promise to yourself. Vague outcomes guarantee you'll stop when things get tough." "Give it a clear name so you can live it, tell people about it, and magically transport yourself right into the game." Scott's Three-Step Approach Know your specific outcome and chunk your actionable steps into an operational system you can actually follow. Understand the true value beyond the surface goal because that's what keeps you moving forward when it gets hard. Make it scalable with a clear name so it builds on itself without breaking what's already working in your life. Chapters 0:11 - What actually drives your goals (mastermind thinking) 1:28 - The five principles behind every successful outcome 2:28 - Know your outcome (not vague promises to yourself) 3:23 - Operational systems beat scattered action every time 4:24 - Making it scalable without breaking your peaceful base 5:43 - Why a clear name changes everything about execution Connect With Me Search for the Daily Boost on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify Email: support@motivationtomove.com Main Website: https://motivationtomove.com YouTube: https://youtube.com/dailyboostpodcast Instagram: https://instagram.com/heyscottsmith Facebook Page: https://facebook.com/motivationtomove Facebook Group: https://dailyboostpodcast.com/facebook Learn more about your ad choices. It is Month of Jeff, so its time to talk to another Jeff, Jeff Pelletier.Jeff had a huge 2025. He paced and crewed at Cocodona, then took on Badwater 135 and followed it up with the inaugural Mammoth 200. We go deep on Badwater, why he was drawn to a race the core of the community has kind of fallen out of love with, and why he thinks it might be the hardest race in the world to crew. No aid stations, constant leapfrogging, the rulebook, the blinky lights, the penalties, and the reality of managing sleep, food, gas, and ice in Death Valley. Then we shift to Mammoth 200. What the course was like in year one, why it is going to be a major 200 because of how runnable and crewable it is, and how finishing timing completely changed the race experience once the weather rolled in. Jeff also talks about altitude issues, his first time puking in a race, and how it felt to miss his Badwater goals but still finish and learn something important. We also get into the filmmaker side, outsourcing rough cuts, what it is like trying to race and produce at the same time, the weirdest things he has done for a shot, and why telling the story can sometimes be the thing that keeps you moving forward. We wrap with what is next for Jeff, including Croatia, Spartathlon, Cape Town, and the always painful lottery season. This episode of the Free Outside Podcast is brought to you by Janji, Garage Grown Gear, and CS Instant Coffee.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Overview of Badwater 13507:11 The Challenge of Crewing at Badwater09:57 Logistics and Rules of the Race13:00 The Unique Terrain and Conditions16:14 Heat Management Strategies19:06 Hydration and Sodium Management22:04 Final Thoughts and Reflections on the Experience26:45 Testing Limits: Fluid and Electrolyte Management28:49 Data Collection in Extreme Conditions31:06 Balancing Filmmaking and Performance33:41 Lessons from Badwater: Setting Realistic Goals35:52 Transitioning to Mammoth: New Challenges Ahead37:06 Experiencing Coca-Dona: A Unique Race38:26 Mammoth's Inaugural Year: A Mixed Bag43:45 Resetting Goals: From Badwater to Mammoth48:01 The Unique Culture of Ultra Running50:04 The Rise of 200-Mile Races53:03 Storytelling in Ultra Running53:39 The Editing Process of Race Films56:50 Behind the Scenes of Filming Races01:03:00 Gear Recommendations and Future PlansSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

The P word. Purpose. After putting out more than 170 episodes in the past two years, I finally needed a break. The fall has been a rocky road, one of my favorite ice cream flavors, but also a tough stretch mentally. So I stepped back, went into the mountains, left the watch at home, and spent real time reconnecting with why I love moving through the outdoors.I talk about losing the sense of purpose that was so clear every single day on the Appalachian Trail FKT, and what it feels like when that structure vanishes overnight. I get into distraction, mental health, being overwhelmed by the noise of the world, and how easy it is to tear people down online. I also share why purpose matters, how I tried to find mine again, and how getting outside remains the one environment where I can think clearly, communicate honestly, and feel grounded. Then we jump into Trail TMZ. A wild update on the Grand Teton FKT switchback case, including the surprise presidential pardon that shook trail running. A Badwater 135 movie in the works with a Hollywood star attached. Montana State football chaos. And three major women's records falling at Tunnel Hill.I close with some thoughts on brands, expectations, therapy, bandwidth, identity, and why the outdoors continues to be the most reliable entryway to clarity in my life.Brought to you by long-time supporters Janji, CS Coffee, and Garage Grown Gear.
