The P word. Purpose. After putting out more than 170 episodes in the past two years, I finally needed a break. The fall has been a rocky road, one of my favorite ice cream flavors, but also a tough stretch mentally. So I stepped back, went into the mountains, left the watch at home, and spent real time reconnecting with why I love moving through the outdoors.I talk about losing the sense of purpose that was so clear every single day on the Appalachian Trail FKT, and what it feels like when that structure vanishes overnight. I get into distraction, mental health, being overwhelmed by the noise of the world, and how easy it is to tear people down online. I also share why purpose matters, how I tried to find mine again, and how getting outside remains the one environment where I can think clearly, communicate honestly, and feel grounded. Then we jump into Trail TMZ. A wild update on the Grand Teton FKT switchback case, including the surprise presidential pardon that shook trail running. A Badwater 135 movie in the works with a Hollywood star attached. Montana State football chaos. And three major women's records falling at Tunnel Hill.I close with some thoughts on brands, expectations, therapy, bandwidth, identity, and why the outdoors continues to be the most reliable entryway to clarity in my life.Brought to you by long-time supporters Janji, CS Coffee, and Garage Grown Gear. Support the show on Patreon and leave a five star review if you enjoy it. It is okay to take a break. It is okay to say you are not doing well. Thanks for sticking around while I found a little purpose again.Chapters00:00 Finding Purpose in Nature05:10 The Impact of Community and Kindness10:41 Mental Health and the Outdoors17:57 Celebrating Women's Achievements in Ultra RunningSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside
Today's episode is a fun one. We're hanging out with friend of the pod, ultra‑runner Michael Wardian. If you've been following along, you might remember we teamed up with Mike a while back to create an audio drama about his run at Badwater 135 — called “Inferno.” When we launched Running Buddies, he was all in, so it's always great to reconnect. This time, we tagged along for a run through the streets of Arlington with one of the true legends in the running world.Mike's story is wild. He's knocked out the Appalachian Trail, pulled off seven marathons on seven continents in seven days, and somehow balances all that with being a dad, an international ship broker, and a competitive athlete across different sports. Pickleball anyone? We got into his training routine, what's next on his fitness horizon, and even his plan to row across the Atlantic (yup, you heard that right). He opened up about his philosophy on running, what fuels his competitive drive, and how he stares down fear. The big takeaway? Mike keeps coming back to consistency, setting goals, and chasing adventure. And for anyone just starting out, his advice is simple but powerful: make your commitments public — it keeps you accountable.Follow Mike on Instgram @mikewardianSupport the showRunningScaredMedia.comVisit our shop to purchase our jogcasts and other merchEmail us at: therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us:Instagram @runningscaredmediaJoin our FB Running Group

Today, I am joined by author Joe Gagnon. Joe is driven by a simple mission: helping people realize they are capable of far more than they believe is possible. Over the years, he has led six companies as CEO, coached top performers, and pushed himself to physical and mental extremes—completing six Ironman races, running 100-mile ultramarathons, finishing Six marathons on Six continents in Six days, and completing the legendary Badwater 135 ultramarathon through Death Valley. As CEO of Raynmaker, he leads the development of an AI-powered sales platform designed to help small businesses grow smarter and faster. As a high-performance coach, he partners with bold, ambitious leaders to break through their self-imposed limits and lead lives filled with purpose and greater impact.Joe's life and his second book, *Living Intentionally*, are rooted in the belief that growth happens at the edge. It's in the uncomfortable, uncertain, and transformational moments that we find out who we truly are. The principles of grit, grace, and groundedness guide every step he takes. Whether he's building a company, mentoring a founder, or speaking on stage, his goal remains the same: to inspire others to live intentionally by design, not by chance. We talk a lot about finding our own way in life and how we do that with meaning, intention, and love. What do you do when life blindsides you—literally? When everything you've built is taken away in an instant, do you let it break you… or rebuild stronger than before? In this inspiring episode, Aaron Hale shares his incredible journey from tragedy to triumph. A U.S. Army EOD veteran, real estate investor, entrepreneur, podcaster, and ultra-endurance athlete, Aaron lost both his eyesight and hearing after a devastating explosion overseas. But instead of giving up, he rebuilt his life with purpose. Today, he's a husband, father, and the first blind and deaf person to complete the Badwater 135, the world's toughest foot race. He's also the host of the Point of Impact Podcast, where he motivates others to push past limits and create change.Aaron's story will challenge you to ask:What excuses are holding you back? What would your life look like if you stopped waiting to be “ready” and just started? This conversation is proof that while we can't always choose what happens to us, we can choose what happens next.Quotes:“Maturity is looking forward and it's accepting responsibility. I fought responsibility for so long, and I sought out enjoyment rather than responsibility. What I needed was the long view of my life, and it takes time. That's why it's called maturity, because it's a transition.”"I'm not extraordinary, I'm not a superhero or anything like that. I'm an average Joe. Each one of you has the ability to do and accomplish so much, and you don't have to get blown up to do it.""You can choose to do amazing things. Allow yourself to look through this window of life, and all you got to do is open the curtains a little bit wider, reach a little bit further, think bigger, and work towards that. Actionable Takeaways:Ask “How can I?” instead of “I can't.”When faced with challenges, shift your mindset from limitation to possibility. Reframe every obstacle as a question that invites creativity and action.Do something hard on purpose.Choose a challenge that stretches you — whether it's physical, mental, or emotional. Growth happens when you deliberately step outside your comfort zone.Find strength in service. When you're feeling low or lost, look for ways to help someone else. Turning your pain into purpose can reignite meaning in your own life.Build momentum through small, daily actions.Motivation fades, but discipline compounds. Take one small, consistent step each day toward a goal that matters to you.Use your story to inspire others.Reflect on a struggle you've overcome and share the lesson. Someone else may be waiting for the hope only your experience can give. Conclusion:Aaron Hale's journey is a reminder that even in total darkness, you can still choose light. His story proves that strength isn't about what happens to you—it's about how you respond. The habits you build, the attitude you choose, and the courage to keep going will define your future far more than any setback ever could.Let Aaron's example push you to take ownership of your story, face challenges head-on, and live with purpose—because the limits you think you have might only be the ones you've accepted.Connect with Aaron HaleBe inspired to push past limits and turn challenges into purpose.Follow Aaron's journey, tune in to the Point of Impact Podcast, and discover more stories that remind you what's truly possible.

Send us a textEric Pence is a guest I actually wanted to chat with a couple of years ago, but it is even better that it is occurring now because this summer he completed the Leadville Trail 100 for the 30th time, becoming just the second person to do so, after the legendary Bill Finkbeiner. Eric and I go back to the early 1990s days of the race, so we have lots of stories to share about that pioneering era, quite a few unique race memories, and the changes we have seen over the years. Eric discusses what has kept him going all of these decades, especially the support from his close and extended families, including his wife Anne, who has written a LT100 crewing guide, and his son Ethan, who has become an ultramarathoner himself. Discussion about his family certainly wouldn't be complete without talking about his sister Pam, to whom he donated a kidney several years ago, and who is married to legendary Mark Macy of adventure running fame. Like several WASP guests have recounted, having one kidney hasn't diminished his abilities one bit. Eric has had numerous other impressive racing accomplishments, and he talks about what has gotten him through iconic events like the Badwater 135 and Across the Years. Eric also shares secrets of his longevity and his tried-and-true tips for racing success in this very engaging episode.Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill Stahl and American Heroes Run for race photosInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman Newsletter!https://mailchi.mp/dab62cfc01f8/newsletter-signupSubscribe to our Substack for my archive of articles of coaching tips developed from my more than three decades of experience, wild and funny stories from my long coaching career, the wit and wisdom of David, and highlights of some of the best WASP episodes from the past that I feel are worthwhile giving another listen.Search either We Are Superman Podcast or @billstahl8
From Bomb Blast to Abundance: A Story of Grit and Growth “Complacency Kills”: Aaron Hale on Grit, Humor, and the Discipline of Doing Hard Things Most of us wait for confidence before we act. Aaron Hale lost his sight in service—and later his hearing—then chose to act anyway. He rebuilt a meaningful life with courage, craft, and a lot of humor. In this episode, we unpack the mindset that turns struggle into service and purpose into action. Key Insights: Ban the word “can't”. When you say “can't,” you shut off innovation and potential. Leadership is given before you feel ready. Aaron was thrust into responsibility; growth followed action. Reframe: “Why is this happening for me?”. This shift unlocked resourcefulness after the blast and during recovery. Purpose can be a small “p.”. Thanksgiving fudge became a business, service, and momentum. Abundance flows through you. Cut the bottom out of the cup and let it pour to others; fulfillment follows. Do something uncomfortable daily. Five-minute rule: show up, then expand. Habits > hype. Complacency kills; growth requires motion. You're either green and growing or brown and dying. Money Learning: Aaron's story proves that wealth isn't just financial—it's also resilience, resourcefulness, and the ability to create opportunity from adversity. The same mindset that pushed him to complete an ultra-marathon and launch businesses can help anyone build sustainable financial freedom: start small, be consistent, and keep growing even when it's uncomfortable. Key Takeaway: Trade excuses for experiments. Start with the smallest hard thing, serve someone with it, and let momentum carry you. About Aaron Hale: Aaron Hale is a US Army EOD veteran, real estate investor, entrepreneur, podcaster, and ultra-endurance athlete. After a tragic injury overseas took his eyesight and later meningitis stole his hearing, Aaron hit rock bottom. Instead of staying there, he rebuilt his life as a husband, father, real estate investor, successful entrepreneur, speaker, and top-rated podcast host. He even became the first blind and deaf person to complete the Badwater 135 ultra marathon—one of the world's toughest races. His mission is clear: to inspire others to make small, positive habit shifts that unlock the success already within their reach. "Why 99% of businesses are left behind by AI sales innovation"Join us with Joe Gagnon, 6-time CEO and Co-Founder of Raynmaker.ai, who's solving the biggest gap in business technology today. The problem is massive: → AI sales tools are built for Fortune 500 companies with huge budgets → Small businesses (99.9% of US companies) get stuck with outdated CRM systems → SMBs compete against enterprises with 100x their sales technology capabilities → Traditional sales automation feels robotic and kills authentic relationshipsJoe's solution is brilliant: Adaptive Neuro-Behavioral Scoring (ANBS) - AI that understands lead readiness AND maintains human integrity in the sales process. His background is unique: 6-time software CEO + extreme endurance athlete (Badwater 135, six marathons on six continents) + recent author of "Living Intentionally" = rare combination of technical expertise, resilience, and ethical leadership. The opportunity is enormous: Give every small business the same AI-powered sales capabilities that only Fortune 500 companies could afford.Don't miss this live conversation about democratizing AI sales technology and building with integrity over manipulation.#AISales #SmallBusiness #RainmakerAI #SalesAutomation #TopGlobalStartups #SMBTech
Kia ora e te whānau. James Inwood is no stranger to challenge. The Greytown runner has completed numerous ultramarathons, including the infamous Coast to Kosci; however, nothing could have prepared him for the challenge of Badwater 135. 217 kilometers of road from Death Valley Basin, finishing on the road to Mount Whitney, the race starts at the lowest point in the contiguous USA and ends on the road to the highest. Brutal temperatures, tight cut-offs, massive crew requirements, and a finishing list that includes the legends of our sport- the Badwater 135 is an ultimate test of endurance. Andrew McDowall spoke to James Inwood about what it takes to undertake and complete such a massive undertaking. What does it mean to truly live with intention? Joe Gagnon—ultra-endurance athlete, CEO, and high-performance coach—believes the answer isn't found in chasing the next big achievement, but in aligning your daily choices with your deeper purpose. In this conversation, Joe shares insights from his book Living Intentionally, a bold guide to finding clarity and resilience in a chaotic world. Drawing from his experiences leading innovative companies and pushing his physical limits across the globe, Joe reveals how embracing discomfort, building supportive habits, and balancing ambition with presence can unlock a more grounded and meaningful life. Have you ever looked at someone who's done something so extraordinary that you thought, “I could never do that”? What if you could, and it simply meant changing the way you think? In this episode of the Visibly Fit Podcast, I sit down with Joe Gagnon, a man who has proven that what seems impossible is often just the beginning. What do a 14-year-old laptop, a sub-3-hour marathon, and a vet-turned-race-doctor with a roll of Glad Wrap have in common? They're all part of Kelvin Marshall's wildly entertaining running life—and we've only just scratched the surface in Part One of this two-part ZenRUN Podcast episode! In this first instalment, Kelvin shares how a childhood spent walking Melbourne's streets led to a lifetime on the run (literally). Strap in—this is Part Two of our epic conversation with Aussie ultra-legend Kelvin Marshall, and trust us, you're in for a ride. In this follow-up to Part One, we pick up mid-run—literally—on Kelvin's 18-day running adventure across France. Wall Street Journal, CNN, Fortune, Barrons, HGTV Frank McKinney is a true modern-day Renaissance man who has pushed the limits of success in his every endeavor. His early years were not very promising: upon attending his 4th high school in 4 years (he was asked to leave the first 3), and seven stints in juvenile detention, he earned his high school diploma with a 1.8 GPA. With $50 in his pocket and without the benefit of further education, he left his native Indiana for Florida in search of his life's highest calling. Today, Frank's life is a testament to the power of aspiration to create a completely new reality. As a real estate artist he has created and sold 44 oceanfront mansions on spec, with an average price of $14 million. Frank recently announced he was un-retiring and coming back to create more real estate artistry! See two short films that were just made about Frank's exciting comeback! As a philanthro-capitalist, Frank has built 30 self-sustaining villages over the last 20 years in Haiti, providing 13,600+ children and their families with homes, schools, clinics, community centers, churches, renewable food and clean water, and means to support themselves. A best-selling author, actor, and keynote speaker, Frank has written seven books in six genres, with the title, premise and cover for his 8th book in his 7th genre being revealed at an exciting stunt Frank will perform on Friday the 13th of January, 2023! Frank has starred in four movies, and keynoted before audiences of ten to ten thousand around the world. Physically, Frank has pushed the limit of his body by racing in the Badwater 135-mile Ultramarathon 12x in the scorching summer in Death Valley, California, a race referred to by National Geographic as “the world's toughest footrace.” As with all of his books, Frank wrote his latest bestseller Aspire! in his Delray Beach, Florida, oceanfront treehouse office that has spectacular views and includes a bamboo desk, shower, bathroom, sink, air-conditioning, hardwood floors, cedar walls, a loft with a king size bed, and a suspension bridge to the master bedroom in the main house—that's Frank's commute to and from work! Today Frank and Nilsa, his wife of 32 years, split their time between Delray Beach and their “glass cottage” in the mountains of Canton, North Carolina. They enjoy visiting their 24 year-old daughter, Laura, in New York City, where she started and runs StrataBrand, a brand strategy firm. © 2025 All Rights Reserved © 2025 Building Abundant Success!! A conversation with Dean Karnazes, ultra-marathon runner, and author. Among many accomplishmentes he holds the record for the longest continuous run of 350 miles in 80 hours and 44 minutes without sleep, and winner of the Badwater 135 milre run in Death Valley California. His first book, Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner, details his ultra endurance running origins and accomplishments. He's since written 4 more books including 50/50 which details the secrets he's learned in running 50 marathons in 50 states, in 50 days.We talk about his origin story and the books he's written about running. We discuss his running accomplishments including the 350 mile consecutive run, Badwater and the 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days.We have an exhange about the boom we've seen in marathon running over the last 5-10 years and I get Dean's perspective on what's fueling it.We talk about the often oversold adverse effects of running and whether or not he's experienced any of them in the 30 years of running long distance. We talk about what he's doing now, what he's doing next, and what he's doing with Greek Running Tours. Finally I ask Dean about his legacy and whether or not he thinks about his place in the annals of ultra marathon running.About Dean Karnazes https://ultramarathonman.com/Dean Karnazes Books:Ultra-Marathon Manhttps://a.co/d/cPlCxAaRun!https://a.co/d/4CCSguMRunners Highhttps://a.co/d/gsb1Elz50/50https://a.co/d/5lUa0arThe Road to Spartahttps://a.co/d/aOfOZhgGreek Running Tourshttps://www.greekrunningtours.com/Dean on Instagramhttps://instagram.com/ultramarathonUltraMarathon Man: 50 Marathons • 50 States • 50 Days Documentaryhttps://youtu.be/bpjRFkqTIkY?si=_R5lAQ5teaCk0kNN

In this episode of Quality Matters, health IT veteran and standards-editor John D'Amore joins host Andy Reynolds to unpack the deeper purpose behind the push to improve data quality. Drawing on decades of experience, from startups and academic research to national standards and consulting, John explains why the real goal isn't just clean data or seamless interoperability. It's better care, delivered more efficiently.Listen to this episode to discover:Interoperability is a Tool, Not the Goal: John compares interoperability to a power drill—valuable only when it helps achieve better care outcomes. Economic Incentives and Bipartisan Momentum: Learn why following the money reveals the true levers of change. From value-based purchasing to performance bonuses, John shows how economic feedback loops accelerate improvements in data quality. Good Pipes, Bad Water: Explore the disconnect between robust data pipelines and poor data flowing through them. John breaks down why measuring the quality of data is essential for progress. Why Quality Measurement is the Real Catalyst: John argues that quality measurement, not interoperability, is what drives meaningful change. Discover how improving data quality can yield long-term benefits across the health care ecosystem, far beyond quality improvement. This episode is essential listening for health IT leaders, quality professionals and policy makers who want to understand the deeper purpose behind the quest for data quality and how it's shaping the future of care.Key Quote:We don't really want interoperability for its own sake. Free flow of information if it's never used by the destinations isn't useful. It doesn't improve care. It doesn't bring down costs. When you go to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy a power drill, what are you really trying to buy? You want holes in the wall. Interoperability is the tool or the power drill that delivers the holes that we want, and the holes are better, more efficient care that reduces costs.I mean, can we envision a future where health care costs go down year over year? It sounds almost impossible. It sounds like a fantasy land. I think that's going to be within reach within the next 20 years. -John D'AmoreTime Stamps:(03:21) Interoperability's Incentives, Means and Ends(06:42) Good Pipes, Bad Water(09:38) Next-Generation Data Validation(12:06) Correcting Myths and Misconceptions(14:17) Quality Drives Interoperability, Not Vice VersaDive Deeper:NCQA's Improving HEDIS Data Quality in a Digital WorldNCQA's Data Aggregator ValidationHEDIS Compliance AuditConnect with John D'Amore

Send us a textBrian Watson was in New York City in 2018 and noticed hundreds of thousands of people crowding the streets and asked what was going on. A friend told him it was the NYC Marathon, a foreign concept to a guy living in a 300-pound body. He calmly told those around him that he would run it the next year. While that might sound daffy to some, those that knew Brian knew to take him at his word. Before you knew it, Brian had dropped a third of his weight, had finished New York, and was moving up to ultramarathons. Beginning in 2021, he completed in successive years the Arkansas Traveler 100, the Leadville Trail 100, and the Javelina Jundred. Then he jumped up to 200s and up, and discovered he actually placed better as the race got longer, finishing the Moab 240 and the Arizona Monster 300 in the top half of the fields. When I met Brian in Leadville, he was only a few days removed from having completed Badwater 135, the so-called World's Toughest Ultramarathon in Death Valley, in 45:04:16. Transforming into an ultramarathoner is only part of his story. He owns a chain of pizza restaurants in Texas and Oklahoma and is partner in a real estate company, among his business ventures. Through all of this, he has gained amazing insights, many of which he shares in this chat. You will learn a ton about ultramarathoning and some iconic races in this episode, but also about so many of the lessons one learns doing these races that strongly apply to anyone's daily life, including overcoming the hurdles we all face, and about the mental battles that derail our success. Brian has a matter-of-fact, no-nonsense approach to racing, like pushing through mid-race stress fractures and weather issues, but that through good planning and determination when things go south, reaching the finish line becomes a foregone conclusion, as it is with anything else he puts his mind to.Brian Watson Strava Brian WatsonBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman Newsletter!https://mailchi.mp/dab62cfc01f8/newsletter-signupSubscribe to our Substack for my archive of articles of coaching tips developed from my more than three decades of experience, wild and funny stories from my long coaching career, the wit and wisdom of David, and highlights of some of the best WASP episodes from the past that I feel are worthwhile giving another listen.Search either We Are Superman Podcast or @billstahl8

Subsequently, in November of 2016, he successfully completed a 60-day journey alone in the wilderness of South America to become winner of Discovery Channel's survivalist show, The Wheel. Following that adventure, Adam set two prominent Fastest Known Times (FKTs): in 2017 he became part of the first duo to ever run self-supported on foot across Great Britain (Scotland, England and Wales) while summiting the highest peak in each country along the way; and in 2020, he set the supported FKT on the Tahoe Rim Trail—a 171-mile circumnavigation of Lake Tahoe. Most recently in 2025, Adam finished 4th overall and ran one of the Top-10 fastest times ever at the historic Badwater 135. He is a co-founder of the Flatlander Ultrarunners in Chicagoland which has rapidly grown to over 1,100 members. In this episode, Luis chats with Scotty about baseball, tragedy at a race, his experience crewing at Badwater 135, putting on the Badger Trail Races, the Ten Junk Miles podcast, and his new podcast called I've Got That On Vinyl.
