Ben Kweller's music first stole my heart back in the early oughts when he released his wonderful debut album Sha Sha, and I have been a huge admirer of his work ever since. I've also had the good fortune of his friendship for more than twenty years, so it was amazing to finally get together with him for the LSQ podcast. Episode 123 features a deep and poignant conversation with BK about his entire creative history, including his excellent latest album, Cover The Mirrors, which was written in the wake of the tragic death of his teenage son Dorian. In addition to sharing how that tremendous loss ended up inspiring him to reconnect with making music in the innocent way he'd done as a kid, he details what those early creative years were like for him — writing Beatles-inspired love songs on the piano as a little kid, starting his band Radish after hearing Nirvana, hustling to get Radish their first shows at Chauncey's Place, a local billiards hall in Greenville, Texas, eventually getting rides from his parents to Dallas to play shows there, recording Radish's demos and the ensuing bidding war to sign them, and more. I was also fascinated to hear about his family connection to legendary guitarist Nils Lofgren of the E Street Band and Neil Young's Crazy Horse (as well as being a brilliant artist in his own right), and how Lofgren provided key support at multiple points during Ben's early days. And then we get into his moves toward stepping out on his own as an artist, including how support from the Lemonheads' Evan Dando helped catalyze his solo career. Ben also reminisces about the heyday of the New York City indie scene he was part of in the oughts, and how allyship with bands like the Strokes and Moldy Peaches and Kings of Leon (although not from NYC, the Kings regular touring companions of Ben's and honorary NYC scenesters) created a vital support system. On more recent topics, Ben reveals that Radish's lost sophomore album, Discount Fireworks, which includes early versions of songs like “Wasted & Ready” and “Harriet's Got A Song,” will finally be coming out via his own label, The Noise Company. He also talks about the work he's been doing recently to collaborate with Jason Schwartzman (who is among the guests on Cover The Mirrors) to record new music for Schwartzman's long-dormant band Coconut Records.

Rob Edwards is a thirty-year veteran of movies and television who wrote and produced shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, and In Living Color before writing two classic animated films for Walt Disney Feature Animation: the Academy Awards and Golden Globe nominated The Princess and The Frog, and the Academy Awards nominated Treasure Planet. His new project is the graphic novel Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls. Rob Edwards reflects on being creative for a living, the difference between tourists and pretenders and being a real professional, and how he feels obligated to both teach and entertain in his work. He also shares what it was like working on such iconic TV shows as Roc and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and managing the pressure and responsibility of being one of the few Black creative workers with his range and depth of experience in Hollywood. Rob Edwards also does some sharing about his approach to writing the new Marvel film Captain America: Brave New World and how Anthony Mackie's character “Sam Wilson” (who is now the new “Captain America”) reflects the much deeper history of the long Black Freedom Struggle and the pressure to always succeed in the face of the (near) impossible. On this special Memorial Day episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega continues with his annual tradition of reading an account of the first such remembrance day that took place at the end of the Civil War when now free Black Americans buried Union Army war dead in Charleston, South Carolina and honored their sacrifice and victory over the Confederacy with a huge parade. Chauncey also reads an account written by a member of the United States Colored Troops about his experience(s) in the Civil War and doing battle against the forces of the Confederacy who were determined to keep Black people in bondage. And Chauncey DeVega goes on a journey around his neighborhood and has a surreal series of experiences where he was lucky to not be shot by street pirates, learned from a wise honored elder on the bus, and then encountered a young man who claimed to be a time traveler. Phil Tinline is the author of the new book Ghosts of Iron Mountain: The Hoax of the Century, Its Enduring Impact, and What It Reveals About America Today. Over the course of twenty years working for the BBC, Tinline has made and presented many acclaimed documentaries about how political history shapes our lives. He has also written for The Times (London), The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph, The New Statesman, BBC History Magazine, and Prospect. In this wide-ranging conversation, Phil Tinline explores how conspiracy theories and conspiracism helped to birth the Age of Trump and its authoritarian populism and anti-intellectualism, the allure of the conspiracy theory subculture, and why the most obvious and simple explanation(s) for complex and terrifying events may be more frightening and disturbing than the most elaborate conspiracy theories. Tinline explains why the agitprop satirical Iron Mountain conspiracy theory from the 1960s endures and is one of the most compelling and fascinating stories he has ever encountered. Chauncey DeVega reflects on the meaning of Mother's Day, aging parent(s), and personal landmark moments in this time of great troubles and crisis. Chauncey also sorts through the overflowing latrine of political waste that is “flooding the zone” to highlight some important news items that you may have missed -- including a horrible story about how a poor Black rural community in Alabama is literally drowning in sewage and the funding to help clean it up was cut by the Trump administration because it was supposedly a bogeyman phantasm white racial paranoiac “DEI” program. On this week's episode of the podcast, there is also some fun and levity to balance out the seriousness and dire challenges of this very difficult time in America and around the world. Chauncey DeVega goes on a journey around his neighborhood and ponders the sacred and the profane. He also shares his thoughts on last weekend's WWE Backlash pay-per-view event and John Cena's first title defense as a heel. Chauncey is an unapologetic devotee of TLC network's many human zoos and offers up his professional judgement about the great mystery of our era: Was Amy on 1,000-Lb Sisters actually bitten by a camel or is it all an elaborate hoax? Episode Overview: In this powerhouse session, John Kitchens reconnects with the dynamic and multi-talented Chauncey Pham for a fourth deep-dive conversation that hits both tactical and transformational levels. From redefining identity as a real estate professional to building vertically integrated businesses, Chauncey shares her real-world experience in pivoting from production to profitability. With fewer transactions and longer cash conversion cycles in today's market, she makes a compelling case for why every agent needs to shift their thinking—from “how many” to “how deep.” You'll learn how to build a business that runs like a store, maximize every opportunity you generate, and develop a framework that scales—regardless of market shifts. Key Takeaways:   Build Your Real Estate "Store" Why every agent should see their business as a retail storefront. A simple framework for running your business with departments, systems, and leverage. How to evaluate every role in a transaction and earn a piece of the pie beyond just commission. Pivoting Without Losing Identity Chauncey's personal story of removing “Realtor” from her bio—and why that mental shift mattered. How to stop chasing status and start chasing freedom. The hard truth: Letting go of ego is the first step to meaningful pivot. Monetizing the Entire Transaction Why agents should vertically integrate (think: construction, design, lending). How to determine a fair value exchange when referring business to vendors and partners. From 25% commissions to barter-based value: How to structure win-win relationships. Proven Processes & Creative Freedom Why one proven process with a high close rate outperforms 10 disjointed ones. Why consistency beats complexity—and how to build a business that reflects your passions. How Chauncey discovered her real genius by leaning into creativity over conformity. There are two guests on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. Dr. Justin Frank is a former professor of psychiatry at George Washington University. He is the author of several books including Trump on the Couch: Inside the Mind of the President. Dr. Frank returns to the podcast and explains the importance of listening to and trusting our feelings and emotions in this time of fear, exhaustion, and collective trauma. Dr. Frank also interprets some of the common dreams that people experience during times of great stress and anxiety. He also shares his expert advice about how to be a good listener who gives useful advice to those who reach out to us for help. Rev. Adam Russell Taylor is president of Sojourners and author of A More Perfect Union: A New Vision for Building the Beloved Community. He explains how the Age of Trump is an extreme moral, political, and spiritual crisis. Rev. Taylor warns that the Christian right-wing is now implementing a decades-long plan to remake the country into a Christofascist theocracy and that Trump's rise to power has made that possible. Rev. Taylor also shares the importance of spiritual discipline and how it can empower collective action in what will be a long struggle to renew and defend American freedom and social democracy in this time of darkness. Chauncey DeVega explains  the German concept of Gleichschaltung (“synchronization”) and how it applies to Trumpism and the larger American neofascist revolutionary project to remake all aspects of the country's politics, culture and life. Chauncey struggles with his love of professional wrestling and great excitement about how John Cena has finally, after 25 years, turned “heel” versus the reality that the WWE has many connections with the Trump administration and this time of horribleness.   And Chauncey DeVega also shares some stories about the everyday heroes he recently encountered in his neighborhood and travels. There are two guests on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. Dr. Justin Frank is a former professor of psychiatry at George Washington University. He is the author of several books including Trump on the Couch: Inside the Mind of the President. Dr. Frank reflects on how the American people and their collective sense of normal, safety, and security has been dramatically disrupted by Trump's return to power and his  “shock and awe” campaign against American democracy and society. Dr. Frank counsels that feelings of dread, fear, and anxiety are totally normal responses to such a threat – but the question then becomes what to do with those feelings. Dr. Frank also explains the psychological dynamics at work in why so many Americans were in denial, immature, and refused to believe the many warnings, over almost a decade, that Trump's return to power would be a disaster for the country and the world. Dr. Lance Dodes is a former clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a training and supervising analyst emeritus at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Dr. Dodes explains why and how so many Americans and others in this time of crisis are increasing their unhealthy use of alcohol, drugs, and engaging in other addictive behavior as a coping mechanism. He also explains the important differences between compulsion and bad habits and their importance for treating alcoholism and other diseases. Dr. Frank and Dr. Dodes both share their advice for enduring, navigating, and how Americans of conscience and honor can try to stay healthy and relatively balanced and ready for the long struggle during this time of extreme stress, anxiety, fear, vulnerability, general duress and exhaustion. Chauncey DeVega continues to navigate the long Trumpocene and Trump's first month back in power, what are weeks that feel like years and decades. The Dear Leader has now declared himself a de facto king, emperor, Napoleon…. or worse. And as Chauncey has warned for years, Trump is now literally whitewashing and creating a thoughtcrime regime against teaching the real history of American society and the color line with his very real and very serious Orwellian threats against America's colleges, universities, and public schools.  WHERE CAN YOU FIND ME? His biography is filled with basketball. What's not in Ricado Patton's bio is his childhood which included being raised by his grandmother after his mom left him and his sister when he was just 9 months old. His father wasn't present either, so Ricardo figured out how to navigate life through basketball.   His college career at Belmont kept him close to home in Nashville. After college, he stayed in the south for many years as a middle school and high school coach and assistant coaching jobs at Middle Tennessee, Arkansas Little-Rock and Tennessee State. Then came his trek to Colorado where he started as an assistant and three years later, got his break as a head coach.  From 1996 to 2007, Ricardo had three 20-win seasons and took the Buffs to the postseason six times. He also landed a huge recruit in Chauncey Billups who would go on to be a #3 overall draft pick.   Ricardo left CU on his own terms and continued to coach here and there, including a return to the state of Colorado when he was an assistant for Chauncey's brother Rodney at the University of Denver. It seems Mr. Big Shot is never too far removed from Ricardo.   That trend continues today as Ricardo is now the Executive Director of the Porter-Billups Leadership Academy, where he loves the challenge of raising money to help young people from underserved communities become future leaders.

Send us a textWhat if the thin line between law and chaos was a daily path you had to walk? We take you back to the wild streets of 1873 Ellsworth, Kansas, where every choice could make or break a gambler's fortune. This is the poignant tale of Chauncey "Cap" Belden Whitney, a respected lawman and skilled scout known for his steadfast commitment to justice in the turbulent American frontier. Whitney, a prominent figure in his community, notably participated in the intense and storied Battle of Beecher Island in 1868. This event solidified his reputation as a courageous defender of settlers. In 1871, he was appointed sheriff of Ellsworth County, where he earned accolades for his unwavering dedication to law enforcement and ability to maintain order in a lawless region. The tragic turn occurred one fateful evening when Billy Thompson, a brash and impulsive frontiersman, sought to stir trouble over a heated card game. Thompson, known as the brother of the notorious Ben Thompson, was determined to escalate tensions. As voices rose and the atmosphere charged, Whitney stepped in to quell the brewing confrontation, prioritizing peace and the safety of those around him. Tragically, in a sudden act of violence, Thompson drew a double-barreled shotgun and fatally shot Whitney, cutting short the life of a man who had devoted himself to protecting others in a perilous time. Whitney's death sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the ever-present dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the Wild West.Support the show

Dayton Ward is a New York Times bestselling author or co-author of more than forty novels and novellas. His most recent Star Trek novel is Pliable Truths. Ward's essays and other writing have been featured at Tor.com, StarTrek.com, and Syfy.com Dayton Ward reflects on his decades-long love of Star Trek, what it means to be creative for a living and his decision to “take the leap” later in life to become a full-time professional writer, how Star Trek fandom has changed over the decades, and what his wishes are for Star Trek to become in the future. Chauncey DeVega journeys home for the New Year and Christmas holidays and has more adventures and challenges as the working-class child of an aging parent. Chauncey also reminds us that these are the good days before the imminent return of Donald Trump to the White House and how we must keep our hearts open to the amazing examples of humanity and inspiration in our neighborhoods and day-to-day lives. Those experiences are fuel for the hope tank that Americans of conscience and honor will need to survive, resist, and eventually overcome the horribleness of the next four years and beyond.
