How to successfully combine plant based nutrition and running with Coach Claire Bartholic

In last week's podcast about recovery, our guest Natalie Brown told us that there were 3 key elements to good recovery - sleep, nutrition and stress management. One area which many athletes (and non-athletes) are keen to explore is a plant based diet. There is certainly plenty of anecdotal evidence about how it can improve health and performance. In his book, Eat and Run, Scott Jurek attributes a change to plant based eating as being instrumental to his success in the ultra running world. What better way to find out about how to combine running with a plant based diet than talk to someone who advocates just that? Coach Claire Bartholic has helped hundreds of runners chase their dreams and conquer what they never thought possible. Her coaching philosophy combines science-based training, plant-based running nutrition, and proven mindset techniques to unlock every runner's true potential. She's a certified running coach, sports nutrition specialist, mom, and borderline obsessive plant lover. As an athlete herself, she went from a 4:02 first marathon all the way to a 2:58 finishing time at the age of 42, entirely plant-based. She coaches vegan, plant-based, and plant-curious runners to achieve the same dramatic success, from those on a walk-run program, general fitness, up to high-level athletes.   Conversation topics include: Plant based vs vegan vs vegetarian diets How to successfully switch to a plant based diet Plant based eating and weight loss for runners Strength training for runners and why it's almost impossible to gain weight Plyometrics, HIT and Z2 training   To find out more about Coach Claire please visit the following channels: Website:The Planted Runner Author of The Planted Runner:  Running Your Best with Plant-Based Nutrition Host of the top-rated Planted Runner Podcast Instagram: @theplantedrunner  Email: claire@theplantedrunner.com   Some other resources you might like to check out: 'Forks over knives' documentary which inspired Claire to try a plant based diet Claire talked about a plyometrics video on her YouTube channel The Planted Runner Podcast: 5 ways strides can transform your running   **To get a free copy of my personal daily mobility routine, please click HERE** To contact Beth regarding Life Coaching, please visit her website at BethanyWardLifeCoaching.uk. Dylan has an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of Ultrarunning in the earthly 2000's and brought a “College Gameday” vibe to the conversation that plays like 3 long time friends unpacking the movie on a weekly long run. In this episode, the hosts continue their discussion about the film 'Unbreakable' and the impact it had on the trail running community. They focus on the experiences and stories of the four main athletes featured in the film: Anton Krupicka, Geoff Roes, Hal Koerner, and Kilian Jornet. They discuss how these athletes influenced the sport and share their own personal interactions with them. They also analyze Killian Jornet's race at the 2010 Western States and the mistakes he made, such as not carrying water and taking too much time at aid stations. They focus on the early experiences and inspirations of the participants in the sport of trail running. It covers topics such as the first time they saw the movie 'Unbreakable', their introduction to Western States, the Montreal Ultra Cup team, and the influence of Scott Jurek. The conversation also touches on the legacy of David Horton, the impact of Jen Shelton, and the unique character of Ricky Gates. Unbreakable is a trail running film that had a significant impact on the sport. It captured a moment in time and showcased the legends of the sport, including Jeff Rose, Anton Krupicka, Hal Koerner, and Kilian Jornet. We discuss Liz's trail name, her experience on the Appalachian Trail, her connection with Warren Doyle, and her transition to self-supported FKT attempts. Liz also shares her challenges with blisters, animal encounters, sleep deprivation, and hallucinations during her FKTs. She discusses balancing her running and music careers and expresses her love for long-distance trail FKTs. The episode concludes with Liz's recent FKT attempt on the Colorado Trail and her support for her friend's FKT attempt on the same trail after hers ended. Follow Liz on Instagram Takeaways Liz Derstine, also known as Mercury, is an accomplished trail runner and FKT record holder. She gained her trail name from a song she listened to while preparing for a practice hike on the Appalachian Trail. Liz's first through-hike and FKT attempt was on the Appalachian Trail, with Warren Doyle as her support. She was inspired by Jennifer Pharr Davis and Scott Jurek's books and attended a workshop by Warren Doyle to mentally prepare for the AT. Liz transitioned to self-supported FKT attempts on trails like the Long Trail and the Penhody Trail. She faced challenges such as blisters, animal encounters, sleep deprivation, and hallucinations during her FKT attempts. Liz balances her running and music careers, using her run commute as a way to decompress at the end of the day. She finds joy in long-distance trail FKT attempts and plans to continue pursuing them in the future. Liz also values the supportive nature of the trail running community and the willingness to help each other achieve their goals. Colin Kirk-Potter grew up running on the fells and a career as a Royal Marine meant fitness was always going to be central to his life. Back when he joined the Marines, a day on Dartmoor involved brutal training but these days he loves nothing more than to run around its trails and fells - to the stage where he's even written a book about the best routes. Colin's running has seen him take on extreme races all around the world, including the Bob Graham Round and the Ultra-Trail Du Mont-Blanc, where he even beat ultra running legend Scott Jurek. But perhaps his greatest challenge came when he struggled with PTSD after serving in Afghanistan. Life in 'civvy street' saw him drinking too much and picking fights, but it was running which helped him to rediscover himself and find peace. Running Tales spoke to Colin about why running like a toddler is good for you, opening a running shop and becoming coach, and exactly how he came to beat one of the greatest runners of all time...   --------------------------------   You can order Colin's book, Dartmoor Trail and Fell Running: 31 Great Runs, on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dartmoor-Trail-Fell-Running-Great/dp/1906095841

The latter record, in my humble opinion, stands as one of the most important and influential feats in the ultra-endurance community during the 2010s.Jennifer is also the author of an excellent book called 'The Pursuit of Endurance', which profiles well-known athletes from the long-distance Fastest Known Time (FKT) scene, including Scott Jurek, Heather Anderson, David Horton, and Warren Doyle. During this conversation, we gain insights from Jennifer on the state of the FKT world. We discuss whether the current media attention, regulations, and styles that drive many modern athletes are a net positive for this space. It's taken a bit to process everything from my Leadville Trail 100. The race for me ended at Twin Lakes, mile 40. My plan to fuel and hydrate better by going out at a conservative pace was obviously too slow and might have worked better had I not expended so much mental and physical energy dealing with a lighting system that wasn't bright enough and my dicey depth perception and balance that led me to being too cautious navigating the rockier, uneven trail sections. I was moving ok but with a thin margin for error when my left hamstring cramped ¼ mile from Halfpipe aid station, mile 33. Despite eating salted mashed potatoes, salted watermelon, and a banana, the hammy continued to cramp up for the next 2-3 runnable miles. I got 250 mg. of salt from a fellow runner that immediately helped, but I'd lost too much time. I bombed down into Twin in a desperate attempt to beat the cutoff and have a shot at Hope Pass, but missed by about 15 minutes.Aside from the disappointment, I'm left with a few bright spots. I proudly represented Team Leadville and Warriors Ascent, which is a great organization supporting veterans experiencing PTS. I also had an amazing crew led by Brian Farrington, who had also paced me to the finish in 2015. My sister Ellen and nephew Matthew came out from Charlotte, NC to experience the magic of Leadville for the first time. Gabby Penaflor, who paced me to the finish in 2010, flew out last-minute from KC, and was responsible for the giant duck and other decorstions on top of the crew vehicle for easy spotting. Super appreciate 19-year old upcoming ultrarunning star Josh Taylor being there the whole time. Huge thanks as well to long-time supporters and all-around nice people Shelley, Scott, and Shane Miller. It's so amazing having all of those folks ready to give up their weekend while this old guy pursues his dreams in the mountains and tries to inspire younger folks to follow in my footsteps.Congrats to all of the finishers! There is seriously not much more inspiring than being at the Leadville finish line during the last two hours and seeing beaten-up warriors trudging the last of their 100 miles with their families and friends in tow. It was also cool seeing well-known runners like Hellah Sidibe and Harvey Lewis totally out of their elements and acknowledging what a beast the Leadville course is, yet still finding ways to get to the line. It was also inspiring to see Tyler Andrews, who's taken me on amazing journeys in South America, bravely fighting in obvious distress to a fourth-place finish. Finally, what a special treat getting to spend time with the amazing Simone Brick, and conversing with legends Ken Chlouber, Merilee Maupin, Cole Chlouber, and Travis and Mark Macy, joking around with the cutoff king and queen Mike and Sandy Monaghan as they followed me around, and chatting with some of the sport's luminaries like Robbie Balenger, Scott Jurek, Courtney Dauwalter, Hellah, Harvey, and more. And seeing tons of old friends along the course. I've got some things to adjust and then I'll be back!Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

Welcome to Episode 50 of the  Eat for Endurance Podcast! Today we have a real legend in the endurance world - Dr. David Horton. You may already know of “Horty” if you are well versed in your ultra running history, or if you happen to have run one of the many many races he has directed. Or maybe you've heard of something called “Horton miles,” one his signature quotes, like “It never always gets worse,” or read about him in Scott Jurek's book, “North.” If not, David is a Professor of Health Sciences at Liberty University, the Race Director of Hellgate 100k and Promiseland 50k, and an accomplished ultra runner (now ultra endurance cyclist after knee replacement surgery). He started ultra running in the late 1970s, and since then has competed in over 160 ultras with 40 wins, including in the iconic JFK 50 and Hardrock 100 mile runs. David also is one of 15 finishers of the infamous Barkleys Marathon. He set speed records on the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Coast Trail, and ran one of the fastest times across America. He has spread his passion for running and endurance sports to so many of his students and other athletes over his 43 years of teaching, and I give him credit for inspiring me to enter my first 50 miler (JFK 50) right after we met back in 2015.We had a very impromptu but great conversation that spanned a variety of topics - nutrition of course being first and foremost but we got into plenty of other stuff that I think you'll enjoy. He has a wonderful sense of humor, is known for speaking his mind, and was really fun to have on the show. So without further ado, please enjoy my conversation with ultrarunner, professor, and Race Director, Dr. David Horton.Links & Resources:David Horton, Liberty University   Follow on FacebookOther Announcements: Please show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on Apple Podcasts (or wherever you listen)  Music Credit: Joseph McDadeHave nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback? For me, the transition to eating plant-based wasn't a hard choice. As opposed to some athletes who do it for performance-related reasons, I've become increasingly fed up with the food industry, particularly factory farming. Without going into a long diatribe here, we kill billions of living, breathing, intelligent animals, funded to a large extent by the government – through industry promoters who lobby for subsidies like the Beef Council, the Poultry Council, the Pork Council, the Dairy Council, etc. – that has then exacerbated health issues like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and other morbidities that were magnified during the pandemic. And then the government has to lay out larger sums of money to help people to afford the health care they need to fight these ailments. Then we have a planet that is inching onto the edge of not being able to feed itself as there is less farmland and more crop failures as climate change worsens, which the factory farming industry contributes increasingly to that problem, all while the world population grows and grows and there are more mouths to feed. Without depressing you further, it seemed like a logical choice for me to spare the lives of a few animals, which won't change the world, but maybe it will totally change it for just a few of them who don't get slaughtered. Funny thing is, after many years of injuries and way too many surgeries, I do seem to be training better than I have in a long time. Not sure if there's a connection, but I'm sticking with this lifestyle. My doctor has even pointed out better health metrics during my past couple of physicals. I can also see this impressive starter list of vegan athletes whose names you likely know, like Kyrie Irving and Chris Paul in the NBA, Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, incredible ultrarunners like Scott Jurek, Robbie Balenger, and Harvey Lewis, nine-time Olympic track medalist Carl Lewis, MMA star Ronda Rousey, and tennis great Venus Williams. My challenge has been that I was raised like most guys knowing how to artfully use a grill to cook. In Colorado, we barbeque outdoors in almost any weather. In our shorts. But my propane tank is lasting a lot longer now, and frankly, my biggest struggle is finding enough variety in what I eat. I love salads, but I'm not up for them every day. Enter Kathy Davis. She has a site called VegInspired that offers a ton of recipes and information geared toward aspiring and existing plant-based eaters. What's great is how Kathy breaks through the barriers and makes it so easy to really make plant-based eating your lifestyle. She's so committed that she and her husband sold their house and travel the country in an RV on something of a plant-based eating road trip, showing how doable it is even on the road. Kathy particularly emphasizes eating whole, unprocessed foods after encountering an interesting twist at the start of her journey. Despite eating plant-based, she gained dozens of pounds because she was eating what David always called vegan junk food. You commonly see them now: Beyond and Impossible Burgers, fake chicken nuggets, fake deli meats, even fake bacon. But these are often highly-processed, sometimes with high amounts of sodium, sugar, and other questionable additives. I'm not saying they're all bad, and I think most are still better than eating animal products, but I'd still point you toward more whole, unprocessed foods like Kathy does. You can join her journey with the coaching she offers, through her Website recipes and blogs, and with the free meal planner she is giving to WASP listeners, which frankly is a Godsend for someone like me to save me from eating salads every day. She's really engaging, so I hope you enjoy this conversation and gain some tips that help you live healthier, and please take advantage of her terrific meal planner.Meal planner:www.VegInspired.com/podcastKathy Daviswww.VegInspired.comFacebook and YouTube VegInspired

Thanks for listening, friends! Today's topic is rewilding, a topic near and dear to my heart. If you've been listening along, you'll recall my BOSS course experience had a profound impact upon my worldview, outlook and life direction. Rewilding connects the dots between various experiences of my life, so I wanted to to share some of the ways one can get into the movement and reconnect with ancestral and primitive skills, technologies, methodologies and ways of being. I mention a few of my favorite podcasts, authors and books throughout the course of the podcast. Daniel Vitalis had an amazing podcast called ReWild Yourself; his current venture is Wild Fed. It's been highly impactful for me to listen and learn as I go; I first heard of him on the Life Stylist podcast. RewildU is a great resource for rewilding topics, as is rewild.com, especially their detailed analyses of the misrepresentations of hunter gatherers in common culture, and the huge implications those sometimes-purposeful misrepresentations have on our perception of the role of hunter gatherers, tribalism, peacefulness, land use, and their lives of meaning. It's definitely worth checking out, and checking your media-conditioned presumptions before you read the articles. Christopher McDougall wrote Born to Run, a bestselling book that spurred the interest in ultramarathons, barefoot shoes, zero drop and the colorful characters in the ultramarathon world including Jenn Shelton, Scott Jurek and Barefoot Ted who promotes natural movement. Local plant books are a great way to reconnect to the wildness and beauty around you; Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Rockies is what I'm currently reading. Enjoy the episode, folks! Here we are.  Back at it again. Today we talk with Kayla who is a coach and specializes in a plant-based methodology for her athletes.  We had a good chat  and I think we can always learn from coaches, that's why I talk o them a lot.  Coaches have the advantage of experience.  Not only their own direct knowledge and experience, but the leverage of the experience of everyone they coach.  Because when you teach, you also learn. It's been a long couple weeks since we talked.  My new role at work has been weighting me down.  It's hard to switch gears to being a creative form being mentally engaged at work. Even though, as you'll hear in today's show, I haven't been running at all I still struggle to find time to do everything I've signed myself up for.  But we keep moving.  Like the characters in my apocalypse story we find a way to survive.  In section one I'm going to talk about how you can handle getting injured close to a race.  In section two I'm going to talk about writing. I'll move you into the episode with an interesting, to me, etymological side path.  It has to do with sheep.  I have been doing a lot of reading.  I usually read 2-3 books at a time.  This week I was reading two of these books and came across the same phrase in both of the books in the same day, so I figured I should look it up.  The word was “Woolgathering”.  You may know this as a phrase, but it's a word.  You don't, at least I don't, hear it much in day-to-day usage, and when you do it's a bit quaint.  It means ‘to be lost in thought.  It came into English in the 1500's when modern English was being formed.  Here's how it works.  England at the time was a big wool producer.  They had a lot of sheep.  When the sheep wandered around and rubbed up against things tufts of wool would get stuck.  So woolgathering was the process of sending someone, probably a kid, out to wander about collecting these bits of wool.  Not very profitable use of time.  There are a lot of wool-related phrases.  “Pulling the wool over someone's eyes” is from the same time period.  It refers to the fact that judges wore wigs made of wool.  When a shyster tired to trick them it was like he was pulling their wig over their eyes so they could see. Or how about form the same time period “Dyed in the wool”? Yeah that's when you put the die into the raw wool before it's made into cloth.  It fixes the color better.  So when you're ‘dyed in the wool' it means you have fixed something in the beginning. The word ‘wool' itself goes way back to the original Indo-European root word Hwol.  So there ya go.  A bit of etymological woolgathering. On with the show.   About Zero ZERO — The End of Prostate Cancer is the leading national nonprofit with the mission to end prostate cancer. Kayla has been plant-based for the past five years and running for over 10 years. She has completed numerous 5K's-half marathons and 4 full marathons. She first become exposed to the plant-based lifestyle in college and will never look back. At first, it was for health and now continues to do it for animals and the environment. Kayla is very passionate about living a whole food plant-based lifestyle while also being active. Kayla has been a Registered Dietitian for the past 5 years working in clinical and community nutrition as well as working with people virtually 1:1. She is a Certified Dietitian Nutrition Coach and holds a Plant Based Nutrition Certificate from E-Cornell as well as a RRCA Certified Run Coach and personal training certification from ACE-Fitness. In 2018, Kayla started her own online business to help plant-based endurance athletes. As a young athlete, she suffered from disordered eating habits then later in life, struggled to fuel and eat enough as a plant-based marathoner. But she knew it was possible as Rich Roll told us how it was possible, and Scott Jurek shared how it even could give you an advantage. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that a vegetarian and vegan diet for athletes is possible, but it must be properly planned. Kayla realized that others without a background in nutrition may be struggling even more and have a harder time figuring out how to eat plant based for health or as an ethic vegan and still run or be active. With Kayla's passion for plant-based nutrition and running, Plant Based Performance Nutrition and Run Coaching, LLC was born. Currently, she provides virtual personalized and group support for recreational and intermediate endurance athletes who want to fuel on plants for their health, the environment, and animals, while gaining the plant-based performance advantage. That's when I started the run-walk training to see if I couldn't use active recovery to build strength actively around the healing.  But, as is sometimes the case, our injuries ignore our time frame rules.  I probably should have stayed off it. So, now I am staying off it.  We'll see what strategy we can use to stay in shape and get some of the physiological and psychological benefits in different places.  I still plan to go the Cincinnati and hang out with my friends, probably limp through the Flying Pig.  But it's not what I want.   It's not what I need.  … When I got to the parking garage at the airport this morning I got a bit turned around and ended up not following the signs that were pointing me up towards the roof.  I hate parking on the roof at the airport.  Your car gets covered with jet fuel scum and if it snows you end up having to clear it by hand.  I didn't follow the signs.  I turned off into the first floor and there was a parking space right in front of the exit door.  I'm not one of those people who circles parking lots looking for the perfect space.  And I usually follow the signs because they are there for a reason.  But, in some cases not following the signs gives you a better result.  Just like sometimes not following the sings of an injury give you better results.  Other times it does not.  We all make our own way in this world and it's up to you which signs to pay attention to and which ones not to. Keep the faith and I'll see you out there. And I'll see you out there. MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Rachel -> Coach Jeff ->
