This week on the pod, hosts Jasmine Clark, Amanda Weinstein, and Rachel Vindman talk about trolls. It's not just bots or anonymous accounts on Twitter anymore - in many places, the trolls are actually running for office. So many right-wing extremists don't have real policy positions anymore, they're just running on fear and personal attacks. But suburban women know better! The hosts are joined by Lindsay Mahaffey and Christine Kushner, two school board members in North Carolina. They've been dealing with their own trolls, facing name-calling at school board meetings and on the campaign trail. Christine and Lindsay are so passionate about the teachers and students in their district… we're lucky to have women like them standing up for our kids. Then Rachel shares her interview with Amanda Marcotte, a senior politics writer at Salon and the author of "Troll Nation.” They chat about how the Republican party has been steadily losing support for their policies so instead, they've turned to “revenge politics”... leaning into fear, rage, and name-calling instead of coming up with new policies that speak to American voters. Amanda and Rachel also discuss the importance of women talking to the men in their lives about the issues that affect them, like reproductive rights. Finally, Amanda, Jasmine and Rachel raise a glass to birthdays, investing in our communities, and Rachel's upcoming Troublemaker Tour in this week's “Toast to Joy.”We talk a lot on this podcast about how important the upcoming midterm elections are. But not enough people talk about how politics can also be fun! So on Thursday September 15, we're holding a special Troublemaker Training with First Lady of Pennsylvania Giselle Fetterman, who knows just how important it is to have a little fun while we're fighting for democracy. Today I am joined by Amanda Marcotte, a Texas-born writer who covers politics, feminism and culture for The Salon. A few days ago she wrote an excellent article on the Black Lives Matter movement. Though we rarely discuss politics on the show, at this moment it is important to be fully present with the pressing issues of our time. In 2018 Amanda published a book called ‘Troll Nation', and I wanted to know how the writing process went for her. As always, we chat about Texas and food. We discuss how it was to grow up in Texas, and racial prejudice that we witnessed, and I'm also surprised to learn how much food Amanda grows in her garden! “The best way is to be a noob. The best way is to do a lot of listening and not talking.” – Amanda Marcotte Time stamps: 1:30 – Introducing my guest Amanda Marcotte. 5:25 – Discussing Amanda's latest article on The Salon. 10:45 – The social and political implications of disbanding police departments. 14:52 – What she thinks about Trump's whole fake news thing. 19:00 – What Amanda's book is about. 21:30 – What are the odds for Trump in 2020 elections. 26:50 – The consequences of discussing politics with our families. 30:00 – The problems Patrick had growing up in Texas because of his Mexican origins. 34:20 – How Amanda's growing up in El Paso was. 37:15 – How Texas is changing and progressing. 40:45 – What Amanda's diet is like and what she likes to cook. 46:40 – The plants and vegetables Amanda grows at her garden. 52:56 – How people can support the Black Lives Matter movement. Journalist Amanda Marcotte guests on today's show to discuss her new book, "Troll Nation: How the Right Became Trump-Worshipping Monsters Set On Ratfucking Liberals, America, and Truth Itself".
The election of Donald Trump in 2016, like most of his campaign, came as a shock to many Americans. In Troll Nation (https://www.amazon.com/Troll-Nation-American-Devolved-Clubhouse/dp/1510737456)Amanda Marcotte argues that Trump's election was the inevitable result of American conservatism’s degradation into an ideology of blind resentment. For years now, she contends, the purpose of right wing media, particularly Fox News, has not been to argue for traditional conservative ideals, such as small government or even family values, so much as to stoke bitterness and paranoia in its audience. Traditionalist white people have lost control over the culture, and they know it, and the only option they feel they have left is to rage at a broad swath of supposed enemies ― journalists, activists, feminists, city dwellers, college professors ― that they blame for stealing “their” country from them. Special Guest: Amanda Marcotte .

Today we are joined by Salon’s Senior Political Reporter Amanda Marcotte to examine her new book Troll Nation, how Trump, a man with peake, and resentment won the highest office in the land. She has covered the American right for years its a slice of America she knows well but grew up in a conservative Texan household with Fox News and Rush Limbaugh-loving parents, we ask why did she leave her people? What fueled Donald Trump’s election? In Troll Nation: How The Right Became Trump-Worshipping Monsters Set On Rat-F*cking Liberals, America, and Truth Itself (Hot Books, 2018), Salon senior political writer Amanda Marcotte argues it was not a principled conservatism but burning desire by right-wing trolls to annoy liberals. Marcotte observes how Trump successfully positioned himself as a warrior against political correctness, while she also challenges the notion that liberals use allegations of bigotry to shut down dialogue. She charges that the infamous Access Hollywood tape did not derail the Trump campaign because sexual harassment is a form of trolling. And she argues that the troll mindset continues to shape how the Trump White House governs. Troll Nation explores several facets of the ongoing culture war, including race, gender guns and the environment. And the book discusses why trolls are attracted to conspiracy theories. Marcotte gives a bracing assessment of why the 2016 election did not turn out as many expected. Bill Scher is a Contributing Editor for POLITICO Magazine.
