Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
Are you pregnant? Thinking about getting pregnant? Do you love Your Parenting Mojo and wish there was a show that could help you to understand how scientific research can help you make decisions about your pregnancy? Well, there is! In this episode we chat with Vanessa Merten, who hosts The Pregnancy Podcast. She uses scientific research to examine – sometimes controversial – issues from all sides to help you decide what’s best for you. And best of all, she goes beyond looking at individual issues to really synthesizing the outcomes of the research in a way that will make your decision-making much more powerful. Do you know how receiving IV fluids during your delivery could lead to a pediatrician making the judgment that breastfeeding is not going well and you should supplement with formula? If you want to understand this as well as the links between all kinds of other issues related to your pregnancy, listen in to this interview with Vanessa and then head on over to The Pregnancy Podcast at pregnancypodcast.com (http://pregnancypodcast.com/) . Today’s guest, Vanessa Merten wrote to me after she heard my podcast to telling me about her podcast and as soon as I listened to it, I knew we had to work together. Her show is called The Pregnancy Podcast and let me say right now that this is an altruistic episode for you, dear listeners, because I am not pregnant and not planning to get pregnant either, but when I listened to the pregnancy podcast, I realized that Vanessa is essentially doing the same thing that I’m doing in Your Parenting Mojo, but for the stage before the baby is born and just after, which is to say that she looks at a particular issue and examines it from all sides using scientific research as her guide, so while my listeners are probably here because they already have a child, I realize that many of you may be thinking about having another one. Maybe you didn’t have the time to do much research before your first baby or maybe you didn’t know there was research out there that could guide your choices, or maybe you did the research, but it was several years ago now and you’re not sure how things might’ve changed in the intervening years if so, the pregnancy podcast is for you. Welcome Vanessa. I’m so excited to have you on the show. So tell us a bit about yourself. Why did you start the pregnancy podcast? Vanessa Merten – Show Notes Vanessa Merten is the fabulous host of the Pregnancy Podcast, which talks about the process of a mother carrying a child for 9 months. She shares with listeners the steps to follow during, and after, the pregnancy, and is a first-time mom herself to a beautiful 16 month old boy. When she was expecting, Vanessa and her husband were having a tough time finding great resources with information on pregnancy. “(Our podcast) is the resource that we wish we would have had when we were expecting” She had some really good friends in the podcast world to help her with her show. It was a challenge to find the time, but she made an effort to work on the show at nights when her baby went to bed. Little by little, the show came together and she was able to launch it. Vanessa shares that so much focus is on moms, that dads don’t get a lot of attention. Still, she says that they are a key part of a pregnancy as they offer support from “Day 1”, when the couple discovers they’re pregnant. “It can be a challenge to make sure you communicate and get on the same page. You really are a team.” Vanessa currently works at her 9-5 job while her husband stays home with their son. It’s been challenging for her to leave her baby during the day, but she is glad he gets to spend time with his dad. “If I can’t be there, that’s definitely my next choice” It’s been challenging for her husband as well, as she says that fathers usually don’t have as strong of a bond, that innate connection, with their child that mothers do. Fear of the unknown is common amongst new fathers. Vanessa recommends doing as much research as possible to make the process of becoming a father less scary. Vanessa feels that it takes “a village” to raise a child. She’s lucky to have great friends and family that have helped her. “We try to be so independent today, but you really need to ask for help if you need it” Her and her husband join support groups, but took a birth class that they found very helpful. While in the delivery room, dads just have to be there, and be present, by helping their partner in any way that they can. Once home, this help should continue. Vanessa’s husband changed almost every diaper for the first week out of the hospital. Her one piece of advice to new parents, or soon to be parents, is: “Just know that everything will work out. It can be so stressful, but you and your partner are going to find solutions. You’re not going to have everything figured out overnight.” Vanessa is releasing a podcast episode specifically for dads on December 13th. I was introduced to Vanessa from Kate Erickson from Kates Take on Entrepreneur on Fire. I have loved her podcast and I wish I had this show around when I was pregnant. Vanessa tells us she is originally from San Diego, mom, dad and brother. who is two years younger. Small family and no extended family.Dad serial entrepreneur and home with family a lot. She spent her childhood on the sand and sun and skateboarding. Love SD and lives with her husband and 1 1/2 year old. Went to college in Santa Barbara and then came back to San Diego. She always thought she would have been that big corner office, big corporate job, which she feels she did achieve, but never thought she would be doing anything entrep or pregnancy at all, but being a parent has helped see the world and her life and through a differ perspective. It is through being a mom that I have found this passion to help parents navigate birth and all the craziness that all comes along with it. As a younger person, I never imagined that I would be doing the work that I am currently doing. She got turned onto birth during her pregnancy. During her pregnancy she admits to being pretty obsessed with researching and making sure she made the best decisions for her and consuming all that information and then being able to have a really good birth experience. and being able to Sticking to her birth plan has been great and being nice to able to help other people where they can do the same thing. Helping them make good decisions about their pregnancy and birth where they feel good and confident about their decisions and plan for their birth and execute the plan for what they want. Read more
