The first multicellular animals to build reefs lived in the Early Cambrian around the time of the Cambrian explosion. They were sponges called archaeocyaths. In the podcast, Sara Pruss suggests that the rise of the archaeocyaths fostered an increase in animal diversity. But they were relatively short-lived, and when they died out in the Middle Cambrian, the diversity declined. Over geological time, reef-building organisms appear and disappear again and again until the corals we have today appeared in the Middle Triassic, about 240 million years ago.Pruss is currently trying to understand why reefs are such a persistent feature of the geological record, despite the environmental stresses imposed on them. She is a Professor of Geosciences at Smith College.

In this episode of the All Things Sustainable podcast we dive into one of the world's most diverse and valuable ecosystems: Coral reefs. To learn about the benefits of this ecosystem and the risks associated with losing it, we sit down with Sam Teicher, Co-Founder & Chief Reef Officer at reef restoration company Coral Vita. Reefs "take up less than 1% of the seafloor while sustaining 25% of marine life, the livelihoods of about 1 billion people in 100 countries and territories. And now, conservatively, they generate $2.7 trillion a year," Sam says. Healthy reefs also protect shorelines from flooding and storms, and they can help treat a variety of diseases. In the episode, Sam explains how Coral Vita is working to restore reefs that are dying due to climate change, pollution and overfishing. "Restoration is not a silver bullet, but it's also a critical tool in order to keep reefs alive for future generations," Sam says. "Just like we can grow and plant trees for reforestation, we can grow and plant corals for reef restoration." In 2021, Coral Vita won the inaugural Earthshot Prize in the "Revive our Oceans" category. Prince William of Wales launched the prize to find and scale innovative solutions to the world's biggest environmental challenges. Na modalidade, competiu nos EUA, Canadá e Europa. Enquanto levava as trilhas a sério, dava os primeiros passos na sua carreira no marketing esportivo e trabalhou para marcas famosas como Reef e Oakley. De volta ao Brasil, passou pela Pepsico e Billabong antes de ingressar para o time da Red Bull, onde prospectou e gerenciou mais de 50 atletas de elite, como Henrique Avancini, Neymar, Pedro Scooby e Carlos Burle. Após quatro anos, deixou a empresa para se dedicar à distribuição das bicicletas Santa Cruz no Brasil. Fez a transição do downhill para o enduro e passou a competir tanto na América Latina quanto no Enduro World Series. "Keep marlin and reef fish off the menu," That's the message from recreational fishers as the government plans to let commercial fishing companies keep and sell bycatch, that right now can't be used. Fisheries New Zealand is proposing 19 regulation changes, which include dropping protections for marlin and 19 reef-fish species outside the Quota Management System. The changes would mean the dead fish could be sold for profit. Advocates say it's putting a target on Aotearoa's vunerable and slow-growing species and will further diminish our already dwindling public fishery. Bella Craig reports.
