Scientists have discovered that marine species are migrating away from the equator at a rate of 40 to 70 kilometres per decade to get to cooler waters as climate change heats up our ocean. But far from being a viable escape plan, this mass poleward relocation of marine life is opening up a sea of problems. On this week's episode of Word on the Reef, hosts Tanya Murphy and Brett Goodban are joined by James Cook University's Professor Jan Strugnell for a deep dive into climate-driven marine species redistribution on the Great Barrier Reef and beyond.Thumbnail Image: A spine-cheeked anemonefish, photographed by Tanya Murphy at Ellison Reef, near Mission Beach - 140 kilometres south of its usual range. Every year up to 7,000 tons of seafood is caught on the Great Barrier Reef, while up to 190 tons of coral is collected for the international aquarium trade. But how sustainable are these fisheries? And as consumers, how can we make sure we're making Reef-friendly choices? In this episode of Word on the Reef, Simon Miller from the Australian Marine Conservation Society joins hosts Tanya Murphy and Brett Goodban for a deep dive into the world of commercial fishing on the Great Barrier Reef.Don't worry - you can still have an aquarium and eat seafood! But this episode will empower you to make sustainable choices to ensure we can all continue to enjoy seafood and coral for generations to come.Thumbnail Image: Comedian Kirsty Webeck (right) auctions off an 'Australian scoly' coral from the GBR in a performance raising awareness about the international coral trade.Sign the Petition: End coral harvesting on the Great Barrier Reef - support aquaculture.Support the showHelp Keep Word on the Reef Afloat! Please take 2 minutes to fill out our Word on the Reef Listener Survey to help us apply for funding for the show!PROTECT THE REEF - Sign these Petitions Now!Australian Marine Conservation Society: Australia, it's time to lead on Climate Action!Divers for Climate: Sign the 'I'm a Diver for Climate' National StatementAustralian Conservation Foundation: No New Coal and Gas!Queensland Conservation Council: Take Strong Climate Action and Build a Positive Renewable Future! Our Islands Our Home: Protect the Torres Strait Islands from Climate ChangeGreenpeace: Save the Great Barrier Reef!WWF Australia: Protect NatureRising Tide: ...

Can shoreline protection do more than defend against erosion? In this episode of The Blue Economy, Katherine O'Fallon, Executive Director of the Marine Research Hub of South Florida, is joined by Arthur Tiedeman of APH Marine Construction and Nicholas Bourdon of Reef Arches for a practical conversation about nature-based shoreline infrastructure, hybrid seawalls, artificial reef structures, mangrove planters, and the future of coastal resilience. As waterfront communities face aging seawalls, rising costs, permitting pressure, storm exposure, and the need for stronger environmental outcomes, the conversation around marine construction is changing. The question is no longer only how to protect the shoreline, but how to build infrastructure that also creates habitat, supports marine life, improves water quality, and gives homeowners, municipalities, developers, and contractors better tools.Arthur shares the APH Marine Construction perspective on hybrid seawalls, marine construction, installation logistics, contractor education, and why South Florida is entering a major seawall replacement cycle. Nicholas explains how Reef Arches are being used as modular, nature-based structures that can help attenuate waves, support habitat complexity, provide alternatives to traditional riprap, and scale across residential, municipal, and infrastructure projects.Together, they discuss Sunrise Key, Palm Bay, Cape Canaveral, mangrove planters, oysters, ecological seawall tiles, homeowner participation, regulatory pathways, pilot studies, data, grants, and why collaboration across the blue economy is essential if these solutions are going to move from innovation to standard practice.Guests:Arthur TiedemanAPH Marine Constructionhttps://www.aphmarineconstruction.comNicholas BourdonReef Archeshttps://reefarches.comHost:Katherine O'FallonExecutive Director, Marine Research Hub of South Floridahttps://marineresearchhub.orgThe Blue Economy is powered by the Marine Research Hub of South Florida, advancing ocean innovation, sustainability, and economic growth.Prefer to read? GreenLight Metals – Comprehensive Introduction To This Wisconsin-focused Copper-Gold Exploration Company With Ongoing Drilling At Their Bend Project

Matt Filgate, President and CEO of GreenLight Metals Inc. (TSXV: GRL) (OTCQB: GRLMF), joins us for a comprehensive introduction to this Wisconsin-focused exploration company advancing copper and gold projects across the Penokean Volcanic Belt-one of North America's most prospective VMS districts-and the Kalium Canyon epithermal gold project in Nevada's Walker Lane, which is subject to a binding term sheet for a proposed staged earn-in and joint venture with Barrick.   In Wisconsin, GreenLight's portfolio includes the flagship Bend copper-gold VMS Project in Taylor County, Wisconsin; along with the Lobo and Lobo East massive sulfide targets, and Reef high-grade gold project. Matt shares that their management team and board has deep roots in the state, and GreenLight is building a modern minerals company for Wisconsin, committed to responsible exploration, transparent engagement, and creating durable local opportunities as it helps supply the critical metals that power the energy transition.     The focus at the flagship Bend project is following up on last year's 2,000 meters of drilling, and utilizing data from the 18,000 meters of historic drilling by other operators, to guide a larger 17,000 meter follow up program. The ongoing Phase 2 Drill Program at Bend is for the initial 7,000 meters of that larger program, further delineating the VMS-style mineralization down-dip and along strike to the east of the main deposit area. The Company will also drill 2,000 meters into the Lobo and Lobo East target area later this drill season.   Next we shifted over to the Nevada asset, where on May 7, 2026, GreenLight Metals announced that it has signed a binding term sheet with a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Mining Corporation, for a proposed staged earn-in and joint venture at the Kalium Canyon gold project in Esmeralda County, Nevada.  Matt outlined the terms and different thresholds of this proposed earn-in process for Barrick, which if executed on, would give GreenLight a 20% fully-carried interest all the way through a Pre-Feasibility Study.  Additionally, this transaction brings in periodic stage-gate payments into the company treasury, while allowing Barrick's exploration team to focus on delineating the mineralization.   Matt highlights the strong company treasury at present, the background and experience of the management team, and the potential rerating of the company valuation should their exploration program at Bend have success in growing the mineralized footprint to a level where a resource estimate can be released next year, putting it on par with other important US-based VMS copper-gold systems.   If you have any questions for Matt regarding GreenLight Metals, then please email those in to us at Fleck@kereport.com or Shad@kereport.com.   Click here to follow the latest news from GreenLight Metals     For more market commentary & interview summaries, subscribe to our Substacks:   The KE Report: https://kereport.substack.com/ Shad's resource market commentary: https://excelsiorprosperity.substack.com/     Investment disclaimer: This content is for informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice, an offer, or a solicitation to buy or sell any security. Nick Hodge – Macro Market Movers, 2 Site Visits, and Investing Strategies in Copper, Gold, And Critical Minerals Stocks

Nick Hodge, Co-Owner of Digest Publishing and editor of Foundational Profits and Underground Alpha, joins us for our monthly longer-format discussion on different macroeconomic factors and market reactions to the war in the Middle East, his key takeaways from 2 different site visits to South Dakota and Wisconsin, and investing strategies in select copper, gold, and critical minerals stocks.   We start off reviewing the mix of macroeconomic movers and knock-on effects from geopolitics as it relates to the closure of Strait of Hormuz, the US/China meetings last week, projections around central bank monetary policy options, rising bond yields and interest rates, a strengthening US dollar, GDP growth, rising inflation, sovereign debt loads, and AI datacenter buildouts.      The US stock markets have shrugged off most of these economic datapoints and geopolitical news, continuing to blast up to new all-time highs over the last week. He points out that the CRB commodities index has also been strong lately, lead by base metals, soft commodities, and the energy space.     When reviewing the commodities,  it has been hard to ignore the strength in the copper pricing, which has been up at all-time highs over the last few weeks of May, and Nick shares his approach is to investing in the copper equities.   For exposure to the base metals producers he has been positioned in the iShares MSCI Global Metals and Mining Producers ETF (PICK), which has performed quite well over the last year and especially in 2026. Nick reiterated points from our prior conversation about 2 of the copper developers with good investor engagement, solid pounds in the ground resources, and good fundamental catalysts being: Gunnison Copper Corp. (TSX: GCU) (OTCQB: GCUMF) and Aldebaran Resources Inc.  (TSX-V: ALDE) (OTCQX: ADBRF).   Nick highlighted the recent acquisition of Arizona Sonoran Copper Company Inc. (TSX:ASCU | OTCQX:ASCUF) by Hudbay Minerals Inc (TSX, NYSE: HBM) and how that may be used as a good case study and lens for consideration of other advanced copper development assets and what kind of projects and jurisdictions may interest the senior producers. Gladiator Metals Corp. (TSXV: GLAD) (OTCQB: GDTRF) is a copper and gold exploration story in Nick's portfolio that just released some high-grade intercepts in the Yukon, and still has a lot of drilling on tap for this season as a catalyst. When reviewing why he prefers safer jurisdictions in the Americas for copper investing, he did point out a company like Ivanhoe Mines (TSX: IVN) (OTCQX: IVPAF) is an exception, due to the quality of the management team to navigate the risks when operating in Africa.   Next we got a boots-on-the-ground recap of Nick's 2 recent company site visits: Lion Rock Resources Inc. (TSXV: ROAR) (FSE: KGB) (OTCQB: LRRIF) – The company recently announced Phase One drill results at their Volney Project in South Dakota. The system features high-grade lithium, tin and tantalum hosted within spodumene-bearing LCT (Lithium-Cesium-Tantalum) pegmatites. GreenLight Metals Inc. (TSXV: GRL) (OTCQB: GRLMF)- GreenLight is a Wisconsin-focused exploration company advancing copper-gold and gold projects across the Penokean Volcanic Belt-one of North America's most prospective VMS districts. GreenLight's Wisconsin portfolio includes the Bend copper-gold deposit, the Reef high-grade gold project, and the Lobo and Lobo East massive sulfide targets.   We wrapped up getting the near-term technical price support levels that Nick is watching for in gold.  For now he is not concerned about gold falling into a true bear market, and he is treating the pullback we've seen in the precious metals a buying opportunity. Any short-term consolidation in pricing should be juxtaposed against the fundamental structural drivers for the longer-term precious metals bull market that are all still solidly in place. He's been using periods of sector weakness in the PMs to add to positions in both GDXJ and Royal Gold, Inc. (NASDAQ: RGLD), along with some other junior precious metals stocks.   Click here to follow Nick's analysis and publications over at Digest Publishing     For more market commentary & interview summaries, subscribe to our Substacks:   The KE Report: https://kereport.substack.com/ Shad's resource market commentary: https://excelsiorprosperity.substack.com/     Investment disclaimer: This content is for informational and educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice, an offer, or a solicitation to buy or sell any security. A lot of past guests have mentioned Elizabeth Hargrave's Wingspan as an answer to a question. Whether as the current game, 60 minute game, or just in passing, there is no denying Wingspan's impact on the industry since its debut in 2019. It was nominated for, and won, lots of awards that year and in 2020. It has had four expansions so far with a fifth in the distant queue according to the Stonemeir emails. Its deeper impact came in 2024 with the release of Wyrmspan, a reimaging, or reimplementation, of Wingspan, by Connie Vogelman with additional development by Hargrave. In this version, dragons replace the birds. Wyrmspan has an expansion as well. Then, last year, a third game entered the Span world, Finspan, and that game is the focus of this episode. Finspan was designed by David Gordon and Michael O'Connell. In this rendition, the birds and dragons have been replaced with fish. Each of the games in the Span world have varied the mechanics of the original. In Finspan, you are, according to the BGG page, a marine researcher seeking to observe aquatic life. You place fish in one of three zones, in one of three tracks, to dive down and observe. The marine researcher with the most points at the end of four weeks (or rounds) is the winner.Gather your fellow divers, and let's take a look at the Rule Clarity for Finspan.

Andrew found the weird cat game he mentioned: it’s Catlantis. 0:22:20 1,2,3 – Tidal Blades 2! We give our thoughts on Tidal Blades 2: Rise of the Unfolders. We really enjoyed this game, but it is a LOT. (First play conversation was originally from episode 415.) 0:28:10 after the second play We get a little more comfortable with the largeness of the game. 0:40:30 after the third play Verdict: We think Tidal Blades 2: Rise of the Unfolders is overall a better game than Tidal Blades: Heroes of the Reef. Are we going to come back to this game and play it more and more? Maybe. We really enjoy this game. It’s immersive, and when we start playing we don’t really want to stop. But we need to allow 3+ hours for a play session. And that’s really hard for us to do. And we don’t have the space to leave it set up. The gang discusses two papers that investigate ancient bioherms. The first paper looks at the formation of early Phanerozoic reefs, and the second paper investigates patterns of reef building and collapse in the late Devonian. Meanwhile, James is being advertised to, Amanda plans unique roadtrips, and Curt solicits legal advice.   Up-Goer Five (Amanda Edition): Today our friends talk about animals that have green friends that make hard bits. These animals that make hard parts are really important today because they make good places for other animals to live. But we don't know all about them and where they first came from and how they first started making hard parts for places to live. So the first paper looks at where these animals that make hard parts for other animals to live in come from. They look at really early animals that make hard parts and show what kinds of places they live in, and also how they stick themselves to the bottom. It looks like different animals got started in different ways, then went out to all sorts of different places and got better at making hard parts for other animals to live in, until that was all they could do. The second paper talks about a bad time when everything died and how animals that make hard parts for other things to live in all died and tiny things we can't see without making them look big took over from them. At this time there were different animals that made hard parts for other animals to live in that lived together to make big areas of hard parts, but then they all died and never came back. But when we look at the rocks we find that tiny things we can't see without making them look big are all over the place while the animals that make hard bits for other animals to live in all die. This paper talks a lot about rocks, but the important thing is that they think the tiny things we can't see without making them look big might be the kind of thing that takes over all the places when times are bad and everything dies, but that might not be the case.   References: Zhuravlev, Andrey Yurevich, and Rachel Wood. Can coral restoration become a scalable business capable of protecting reefs, coastlines, economies, and communities? In this episode of The Blue Economy, Katherine O'Fallon, Executive Director of the Marine Research Hub of South Florida, sits down with Sam Teicher, Co-Founder of Coral Vita, to explore how coral restoration is moving from traditional conservation work into a scalable blue economy model.Together, they unpack how Coral Vita is growing climate-resilient corals, building land-based coral farms, using technology and data to improve restoration outcomes, and creating a business model that supports reef recovery at a scale traditional funding alone cannot achieve. From coral nurseries, reef protection, and coastal resilience to investment, innovation, local workforce development, and the future of restoration technology, this conversation shows why coral reefs are not only ecological treasures, but critical infrastructure for the future of coastal economies. In this episode:• Why coral reefs matter to tourism, fisheries, coastlines, and global economies • How Coral Vita is scaling coral restoration as a business • Why traditional grant-funded restoration is not enough on its own • How land-based coral farms help grow stronger, more resilient corals • What Brain Coral technology brings to monitoring, data, and transparency • Why coral reefs act as natural coastal protection • How restoration connects to ports, development, and environmental mitigation • Why investors, family offices, and ocean-focused funds are paying attention • How coral restoration creates jobs beyond marine biology • Where the biggest opportunities lie for the future of reef recoveryGuest: Sam Teicher, Co-Founder, Coral Vita Website: https://coralvita.coHost: Katherine O'Fallon Executive Director, Marine Research Hub of South FloridaThe Blue Economy is powered by the Marine Research Hub of South Florida, advancing ocean innovation, sustainability, and economic growth. https://marineresearchhub.org

Warming oceans, pollution, more potent hurricanes, anchor drops, dredging and trawling. The Florida Reef struggles with a lot of impacts today. In fact, only about 2 percent of the reef that stretches some 350 miles from Biscayne National Park past Everglades National Park and down to Dry Tortugas National Park is covered with living coral. For several months now at the National Parks Traveler we've been building an ongoing series of stories and podcasts focused on impacts to the Florida Reef and whether it can be saved. Today our guest is Dr. Erinn Fuller, an associate vice president for research, senior scientist, and coral health and disease program manager at the Mote Aquarium in Florida.  Dr. Fuller is on the forefront of efforts to offset impacts to the Florida Reef and restore its corals. She'll explain the various impacts to the reef and the work being done to offset them.

Host Shrek opens the Noob Spearo podcast with a listener voice message from Matt sharing ear-care tips for divers (coconut oil drops before diving and periodic rinses with a 50/50 vinegar and alcohol mix). The episode then jumps into a last-day, post-trip recap of the Whitsundays Sail & Spear Trip, with Sam the Waterman explaining the context: sailing through the Whitsunday Islands to the outer Great Barrier Reef, hundreds of fish landed across the trip, multiple 20kg+ GTs caught on rod and line between spearfishing sessions, and notable catches like Red Throat and Spangled Emperor on luncheon meat, alongside strong crew bonding. In a roundtable-style debrief, guests and instructors share highlights, misses, and "frother" shoutouts: exhaustion from consecutive days of diving, stories of drift dives and tidal creek/lagoon systems, Spanish mackerel attempts using throw flashers and diver formations, bull sharks around the boat, and lessons on relaxing during deep dives (relax jaw, hands, feet; free-float the top 10m). Several divers celebrate first-time or milestone catches including yellow lip emperor, coral trout, Red Throat Emperor, Red Emperor, parrotfish, and multiple GTs landed early in the morning. The group emphasizes buddy diving, safety, instruction quality (notably Tim), and the unique Great Barrier Reef scenery. The episode closes with details on how to join future Sail & Spear charters via spearfishingcourses.com.au, plus a push to watch the video version on YouTube/Spotify and check out the revamped Noob Spearo YouTube channel with help from Sam the Waterman.
