Eric speaks with David Dinkens of Dinkens Aquatic Gardens, they discuss his business that supplies reef aquariums with phytoplankton and copepods. The conversation covers the accidental start of his business, which grew from a hobby of setting up a saltwater tank and culturing the microalgae and crustaceans, to his current status as a full-time supplier who left a career as a history teacher. Key topics include the importance of phytoplankton as the foundation of the reef food chain, its role in nutrient control (nitrate and phosphate reduction), and the benefits for coral health and coloration. Dinkens also provides detailed advice on dosing his products and explains the need for a clean, sterile environment for culturing his live foods. Key Takeaways: If a new endeavor seems intimidating, start by doing thorough research to learn the ropes. Embrace small experiments, as they can sometimes accidentally lead to new opportunities and businesses. Maintain a resilient outlook, remembering that difficult situations often have a flip side or a silver lining. Find a hobby, such as keeping an aquarium, that provides a soothing contrast to a busy or fast-paced life. Concentrate on building the foundation of your ecosystem from the bottom up by establishing a strong base layer of the food chain.

Sexier Than A Squirrel: Dog Training That Gets Real Life Results
Send us a textSome animals step into the arena and you can feel it—the spark, the “cue me now” readiness, the sense that they want to win with you. We bring that feeling into focus with international dressage rider and team manager Beth Bainbridge, comparing notes across horses and high-drive dogs to show how trust, routines, and basics turn talent into stable, repeatable results.Beth takes us from the highs of elite competition—national anthems, big stages, and stallions who light up—to the quiet work that makes it possible: building security on fundamentals, respecting individual preferences, and designing environments that lower friction. We dig into welfare checklists for “behaviour” problems (teeth, saddle fit, backs, vet, forage), why continuity of routine matters for older or rehomed animals, and how a calm, predictable setup protects performance. You'll hear practical competition strategies too: filmed run-throughs, targeted training blocks, clear day-of schedules, ring walks, visualisation, and the crucial rule that the calmest handler takes over when nerves spike.Teaching gets a playful spotlight as Beth explains how to make dressage irresistible for kids by pairing precise asks with joyful releases. We compare “hot” and cooler types—how sensitive athletes often settle with more consistent contact, and how thoughtful, steadier horses become quicker by rewarding smaller aids. Expect honest personality talk (DJ Loki vs accountant Reef), transferable routines for travelling dogs, and the shared principle that basics win under pressure. If you care about advanced dog training, dressage performance, equine welfare, or simply building better partnerships with animals, this conversation is a blueprint. Coral reefs generate $2.7 trillion a year by powering tourism economies, protecting coastlines from storms, and yielding medicines that fight infections and cancer. Yet 90% of the planet's coral reefs could be gone by 2050 – a loss that Sam Teicher describes as an “ecological tragedy and a socioeconomic catastrophe.” That's why he co-founded the reef restoration company Coral Vita. In this installment of the “FutureWork Playbook” series spotlighting clients on Forbes' “30 Under 30,” Sam explains to host Natalie Pierce that Coral Vita uses land-based farming to grow climate-resilient corals up to 50 times faster than nature. With a resume that includes winning Prince William's Earthshot Prize and raising $8 million to close a Series A—the first for a coral restoration company—Sam shares insights about combining cutting-edge science with commercial viability. “To live in a world where we need to restore coral reefs is a pretty strong indictment,” he observes, “and also a testament about what people are willing to do and innovate on and push forward in order to ensure we can continue having a thriving planet.”Episode HighlightsCoral reefs generate $2.7 trillion annually and support 25% of marine life, yet we've lost half since the 1970s and are on track to lose over 90% by 2050.Coral Vita's land-based farms use microfragmentation technology to grow corals 50 times faster than natural rates while stress-hardening them through controlled temperature variations to create climate-resilient coral populations. The company operates on three revenue pillars: vertically integrated farms that serve as tourism attractions, technology licensing to other restoration practitioners, and coral relocation services for coastal development projects with survival rates up to 98%.Sam's work involves predicting coral reproduction with precision timing—within 45- to 90-minute windows during full moon cycles—using red-filtered lights underwater to avoid disrupting lunar cues that trigger mass spawning events. With farms in the Bahamas and Saudi Arabia, Sam describes the financial and technical considerations that inform broadening his work to develop farms around the globe.

Jacks Reef isn't even an incorporated township, sitting along an old section of the Seneca River, now cut off by an addition to the Erie Canal and sitting in swamp country, USA, Jacks Reef is a long-gone entity from times past when mule drawn barges and brothels were the theme of the day. Nowadays, DrMike calls Jacks Reef home, in this episode DrMike takes on the critics, those calling him out for being a NY kid. In this fun, packed, story telling episode, we also further dissect the BPOP survey and AHM reports along with a tropical update, all today on the FowlWeather Podcast.
Cyclones are part of life in the tropics, but climate change is making them stronger and more destructive. On the Great Barrier Reef, their force can pulverise thriving coral gardens into unstable rubble fields where baby corals struggle to grow. But there's hope! In this week's episode, we dive into an innovative solution that's helping damaged reefs bounce back — and discover how you can play a role in bringing them back to life again! This week's guest: Freda Nicholson, marine biologist and Program Manager for Mars Sustainable Solutions.
Ash, Luttsy and Nikki broadcast live from a marine tank at the Daydream Island Resort, taking in the beautiful underwater scenery. They chat about the resort amenities, get a sports update from guest Jonathan Brown, and even convince their producer Lachie to put on a wetsuit and dive into the tank for an underwater show. It's lighthearted fun as the hosts joke about Lachie's "baby diver" antics, engage with listener calls about weird dad hacks, and look ahead to an important upcoming Broncos game. Timestamps:- 2:30 - Broadcasting from the marine tank - 7:00 - Airport hijinks with Nikki- 12:45 - Sports update with Jonathan Brown- 23:00 - Listener dad hacks- 32:00 - Locky's big dive into the marine tankSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“The Lost Special” centers around the baffling disappearance of a privately hired train (“a special”) during its run from Liverpool to London. The train, carrying just a handful of individuals, vanishes inexplicably after passing a junction—it doesn't show up where it should, and neither the tracks nor the train can be found. | #RetroRadio EP0495Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateCHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Show Open00:01:30.028 = CBS Radio Mystery Theater, “My Wife Doesn't Understand Me” (October 11, 1976)00:45:26.746 = Strange Wills, “So Deep Stream” (September 28, 1946)01:15:10.439 = Strange, “Deadman's Reef” (1955) ***WD01:27:15.389 = Suspense, “The Lost Special” (September 30, 1943) ***WD01:56:44.491 = Tales Of The Frightened, “Dr. Harvey Cushing” (1957)02:01:03.980 = The Saint, “Carnival Murder” (February 04, 1951) ***WD02:30:20.957 = Theater Five, “Captive Spirit” (October 16, 1964)02:51:49.891 = Theater 1030, “Trespassers Will Be Experimented Upon” (1968-1971) ***WD03:22:25.775 = 2000 Plus, “Insect” (May 17, 1950) ***WD03:51:49.648 = The Unexpected, “Eavesdropper” (1948)04:06:27.949 = Unsolved Mysteries, “Toll Bridge” (1936) ***WD04:20:54.279 = Dark Venture, “Hideout” (January 07, 1947) ***WD04:44:27.859 = Weird Circle, “Executioner” (November 19, 1944)05:11:52.842 = Show Close(ADU) = Air Date Unknown(LQ) = Low Quality***WD = Remastered, edited, or cleaned up by Weird Darkness to make the episode more listenable. This week we wander through Jeshimon and track Reef as he rescues his father's harried remains from the just yet supernatural decay they'd have suffered in the desecrate airs of the town. Though Webb may rest his children and Mayva shall not and like them we wrestle with grief and legacy in our discussion. Those distressed by the forestalling of our chapter 19 discussion are recommended to contemplate the tetractys for fifteen minutes each morning and come back in two weeks. If you like what we're doing and want to support the show, please consider making a donation on Ko-Fi. Jameson Reeder Jr. is a shark attack survivor, amputee, surfer, and one of the most courageous young men I've ever spoken with. At just 10 years old, Jameson was attacked by a 9-foot bull shark while snorkeling in the Florida Keys. What followed was a miraculous chain of events involving strangers, a nurse who swam through shark-infested waters, a faster boat, and a powerful spiritual encounter that Jameson says saved his life. He and his father Jamon recount the entire journey in their new book, Rescue at the Reef. In this conversation, we talk about trauma, faith, family, facing your fears, and how this young man chose purpose over fear—and joy over bitterness. Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation were: The unbelievable moment Jameson said, “Jesus is going to save me,” moments after losing his leg Jamon's impossible decision to hand off his son to a stranger on a faster boat Jameson's vision of Jesus and the peace that carried him through the ride back The family's return to the reef just weeks later to reclaim joy and face fear How Jameson now comforts others with trauma, proving strength can come in small packages Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 01:10 Reeder family roots in the Keys 06:45 The day of the shark attack 15:00 The miracle rescue unfolds 22:45 Jameson's spiritual experience on the boat 28:00 Hospital, trauma, and family response 35:15 Returning to the reef & keys that unlock fear 46:50 Speaking to others with trauma 54:40 Surfing, fishing, and shark advocacy 1:06:15 Finding purpose and what's next for Jameson
