We're shipping up to Boston, ARGonauts! Join us along with special guests and friends of the show Andre Tipton, Bill Gardner, and Amanda Gardner as we chat about everything that will be shown at PAX East 2018. Bill and Amanda also tease a surprise they're going to show at their booth. The news gets us started with word that Bitmap Books is making a Sega Master System visual compendium, plus a whole string of rumors including a new Wario Land for Switch, Ikaruga making a comeback on modern platforms, and Capcom bringing back Puzzle Fighter in a way we might not be hoping for. The Stage of History this week has us celebrate a couple of great platfomers with Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap. Robert then takes us back to the beginning of a franchise with the first Far Cry in Obscura. We also have a couple of game codes to give away for MidBoss and PC Gaming Simulator, and then another round of Random Select. Guess who David is before he skates away! This episode we take a look not only at the Sega Master System game Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, but also discuss the recent remake for modern consoles. How does the remake hold up, but more importantly, is this the sort of game that needed a remake at all? We also answer a listener question, about if we have considered comparing all ports of a specific game or games, and we somehow talk about the Virtual Boy instead. Want to skip right to the game? Try starting at 9:43!
The three of us take a look at a 1995 Sega Genesis game we had never played before, Vectorman! Included on several collections of Genesis games, most notably the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, Vectorman seemed to be Sega's answer to Donkey Kong Country-- but how does it hold up in 2017? Want to skip right to Vectorman? Start listening at 12:14! Next episode we hit another time-relevant favorite of Jeremy P's with Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap for the Sega Master System.
The Tangent - 113: Picnic In Poundtown The episode this week is Garyless, but not to worry, the guys do what they can to make it like old times. And but that they mean talking even more. First up is Stephen. Besides his usual Breath of the Wild talk (which we get to later), he has 3 iPhone/mobile games. Hyoerburner is a on rails Starfox-type game. You move by touching the screen to avoid obstacles. Pretty simple. Skydancer is a Temple Run-like game, but with the challenge of jumping from platform to platform and not falling to your death from the sky. Then, Polytopia. Think of Age of Empires or Civilization, but without the battles and you only have 30 turns to complete tasks and get the highest score possible. It helps that all the games were free. Next up is, Anthony. He played, What Remains of Edith Finch this week, and by the looks of it, got duped into thinking it was a horror game. It is not. What it is is a 2 - 3 hour walking game that costs $20.00. What's actually a horror game is Outlast 2, which Anthony also played this week. Brian and Justin want no part of this game. Especially when Justin remembers it's the game where you walk around with just a camera in the dark. Then speaking of Justin, he talks more about The Witcher III. He's still enjoying the game. He finds the more time he puts in the more he really appreciates it. Can't blame him. Lastly, Brian's turn. He's got Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, a remaster of the 1989 Sega Master System game. The game is difficult. Very difficult. It doesn't tell you anything. However, he loves the fact you can switch between the remake and the retro graphics and music of the original. He wishes more games would do that. Then the all of us talk about our time with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch. Keep your eye out for our Let's Play of it on our YouTube channel. The Drunken News: Game Show Edition keeps the points mostly positive this week. Brian had his 30 seconds to rant and he made sure to take it out on Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. While Gary's game was without a doubt on point.
