It condenses the side-scrolling gameplay of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) game Donkey Kong Country (1994) for the handheld Game Boy with different level design and boss fights. The player controls the gorilla Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong as they defeat enemies and collect items across 30 levels to recover their stolen banana hoard from the crocodile King K. Rool.Development began in 1994, before Donkey Kong Country's completion, and lasted a year. Rare's Game Boy programmer, Paul Machacek, developed Land as an original game rather than as a port of Country after convincing Rare co-founder Tim Stamper it would be a better use of resources. Like Country, Land features pre-rendered graphics converted to sprites through a compression technique. Rare retooled Country's gameplay to account for the lower quality display, and David Wise and Graeme Norgate converted the soundtrack to the Game Boy's sound chip.Donkey Kong Land was released in mid-1995. It sold 3.91 million copies and received positive reviews. Critics praised it as successfully translating Country's gameplay, visuals, and music to the Game Boy, though they disagreed over whether it was an equal experience. Land was followed by Donkey Kong Land 2 (1996), Donkey Kong Land III (1997), and a Game Boy Color version of Country (2000), which attempted to replicate the SNES Country games more closely. Interestingly, this is a younger version of Pauline than we've seen in 2017's Super Mario Odyssey (where she sang her now-famous "Jump Up, Superstar" as Mayor of New Donk City), or even her first appearance in the original Donkey Kong back in 1981. So does that make Bananza a prequel? Other details dropped in the Direct include returning Donkey Kong Country characters, DK's new powers, and more. In other news, Bungie's Marathon has been delayed again, this time to an unspecified date. Bungie is taking feedback from April's test to heart, while publisher Sony is eager to not make the same mistakes Concord did, which died a quick death within two weeks of its launch. And finally, Civil War director and 28 Years Later writer Alex Garland is on his seventh playthrough of FromSoftware's Elden Ring. Speaking with IGN, the filmmaker had some tips to share for the game, but unfortunately no updates on the A24-produced live-action movie he's making.

I agree with everyone that says this game is stunning to look at and the soundtrack is superb. It's creative and tells a story. Honestly, I like almost everything about Okami. Except, playing it... It definitely has some Zelda DNA in it and that isn't a bad thing at all. You're solving puzzles, acquiring power-ups, running through fields. You get to play as a wolf which is rad. I just didn't find the actual gameplay mechanics that interesting. The paintbrush mechanic is sic, but I feel it was under utilized. The combat is kinda boring. And while the writing is really solid (and funny), there's just a little too much of it. My buddy Bradley McCue returns to the show this week. He's a Zelda diehard and liked Okami a little more than I did. I thought it was a work of art that I just didn't want to play, whereas Bradley thought it lived up to the Zelda DNA coursing through its veins. We had a pretty good discussion about this one, so whether you love this game or not, I hope/think you'll enjoy this episode. The Donkey Kong Country version of Donkey Kong, along with Diddy Kong, crossed over with Tetris for the very first in either franchise's history back in February with Tetris 99's 45th MAXIMUS CUP event. Was a complete Kongo Jungle reimagining of the classic puzzle game enough to finally convert Hyle... or at least convince him that it's nearly as good as It's Mr Pants?

We came at this game from 2 different directions and had 2 very different playthroughs, but met up at the end to agree this is just a hell of a platformer and a game no DKC fan should miss. Should boss fights have their own separate difficulty sliders? And what game series peaked with its first release and then just gradually got worse?
