The Nintendo Switch 2 could get hit with 145% tariffs. Will gamers pay $600 or more for the new console? Probably, if we're being honest. A $600-$650 price increase for the Switch 2 due to tariffs could make it one of the most expensive gaming consoles ever released. China may attempt to circumvent tariffs by shipping Switch 2 components to other countries before sending them to the US, potentially violating trade agreements. The 145% tariff could cause a severe shortage of Switch 2 consoles in China, affecting millions of gamers on launch day. While smartphones, notebooks, and servers are exempt from certain tariffs, game consoles and speakers remain subject to the 145% tariff, highlighting inconsistencies in trade policies. A Minecraft Movie made $80 million in its second weekend, which is INSANE! And then Jack Black surprised a bunch of young moviegoers by showing up a theater. Kids bringing live chickens to "Minecraft" movie screenings and throwing popcorn at the screen mimics "Rocky Horror Picture Show" audience participation, potentially disrupting theater operations. The "Minecraft" movie's $550 million global gross in just 10 days challenges Disney and Marvel's dominance, outperforming "Captain America: Brave New World." A PG-rated video game adaptation starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa becoming the highest-grossing film of the year could reshape Hollywood's approach to game-based movies. "Minecraft" movie's success, with $281 million domestic and $550 million global earnings, may encourage more disruptive audience behavior in theaters. Warner Brothers' cautious marketing strategy for "Minecraft" paying off with record-breaking $162 million debut could influence future blockbuster promotional tactics. Are female streamers being paid less to promote new games than their male counterparts? It's... complicated. A study alleges a 32% pay gap between male and female video game influencers reveals a systemic bias in the industry, with women earning significantly less for sponsored content despite equal or greater audience engagement. Ubisoft's decision to pay $76,000 to a male influencer for promoting Assassin's Creed Shadows while excluding women from top-paid promotions highlights potential gender discrimination in high-profile gaming collaborations. Female gaming influencers who create crossover content in fashion, cosplay, and beauty can earn substantially more than male counterparts due to higher-paying ad networks targeting female-dominated purchasing demographics. The disparity in collaboration rates, with male influencers earning $234 per deal compared to $160 for females, suggests a pervasive undervaluation of women's influence in the gaming industry. Ad networks prioritizing female influencers due to women's tendency to "pull the trigger" on purchases in households perpetuates gender stereotypes while potentially disadvantaging male content creators. The focus on audience metrics like size, country, age, and buying habits for determining brand deal prices may inadvertently perpetuate gender biases by valuing traditionally male-dominated gaming niches more highly. Players can allegedly dismember and eat characters in Pal♡world! ~More Than Just Pals~ a game marketed as a dating sim and visual novel. The game's Steam page controversially presents Palworld as both a romantic school simulation and a platform for violent acts against characters. Palworld's marketing creates a jarring contrast between cute, romantic elements and disturbing, violent gameplay options. The developer's claim about cannibalistic features has sparked intense debate about ethical boundaries in video game content. Palworld's premise of enrolling as a transfer student in a prestigious academy takes a dark turn with the option to harm classmates. The game's controversial content raises concerns about potential negative impacts on players and broader societal implications. Nintendo is delaying Switch 2 pre-orders due to concerns about new Trump tariffs, potentially leading to increased console and game prices. The Switch 2 will cost $449.99 without a game, and Mario Kart World will be priced at $80, sparking outrage among fans. Fans are organizing a digital protest demanding Nintendo lower prices, but it's unlikely the company will budge. The video host suggests $100 games may become the new normal, expressing skepticism about Nintendo's tariff explanation. Businesses may use tariffs as an excuse to keep prices high, similar to gas prices remaining elevated after Hurricane Katrina. The Switch 2 price controversy could drive more people towards retro gaming and used consoles, despite retro gaming becoming an expensive hobby. Trump tariffs on Chinese-made tabletop games could devastate the industry, forcing 50-60% production cost increases and potentially bankrupting small companies. The tariffs are effectively a tax on US consumers, not foreign producers, contradicting the stated purpose of protecting American industries. The US lacks sufficient industrial capacity for large-scale board game production, making it nearly impossible for companies to shift manufacturing domestically. Crowdfunded projects face particular risk, as products pre-sold years ago now face dramatically higher production costs, potentially leading to unfulfilled orders. Tariffs may force a shift to direct sales models, disrupting the existing distribution network and potentially eliminating hobby stores as intermediaries. Companies may need to downsize and lay off employees to survive, as tariffs could consume 20% of expected profits from initial print runs. Switch 2 games are priced according to demand and development costs. So basically -- whatever Nintendo fans are willing to pay. And if they're like Disney fans, they'll pay plenty. Nintendo's variable pricing for Switch 2 games, considering factors like development, gameplay, durability, and repeatability, is controversial and may alienate gamers during economic uncertainty. Despite tariffs not being factored in, Nintendo might launch Switch 2 at $600 or more, which is deemed highly unlikely by gaming commentators. The new Joy-Con controllers for Switch 2 will not feature Hall effect sticks, potentially disappointing gamers given the major problems with the original Joy-Cons. Nintendo's pricing strategy includes Mario Kart World at an astonishing $890, which may face significant backlash from consumers. The Switch 2 enhanced editions of physical games, containing a download code for upgrades, are considered false advertising by Nintendo's own support. Nintendo's commitment to selling the original Switch after 7-8 years on the market is confusing and may lead to price competition and consumer confusion. The Quake 2 AI demo's poor performance, sloppy graphics, and major issues like disappearing enemies have led many to question if AI-generated games are ready for prime time. Despite flaws, the demo's ability to dynamically generate gameplay sequences is seen as a glimpse of the future and a step towards more immersive experiences. AI-generated games are replacing human developers and disrupting the gaming industry, sparking universal negative criticism on social media. Phil Spencer's suggestion to use AI for game preservation and ports has caused outrage among game developers who argue AI lacks the essential quirks and interactions of classic games. Austin Walker counters that AI is not preserving games but creating new experiences based on old ones, asserting that emulators and ROMs remain superior for preservation. Critics argue AI-generated games will never replicate the complexity and nuance of human-created games, relegating them to second-best status. Nintendo's digital-only Switch model with cartridges as download keys is normalizing the loss of game ownership, contrasting sharply with Atari's physical-only 7800 Plus releases. The 35% drop in UK physical game sales within a year signals an alarming trend where gamers risk losing access to their libraries if digital stores shut down or alter games. Atari's commitment to 30 physical-only games at $30 each for the 7800 Plus ensures a guaranteed offline gaming experience without internet dependency. Digital-only releases and cartridges as mere keys for downloads are eroding consumer rights and the concept of true game ownership. The decline of physical media in gaming is threatening game preservation and the ability to play titles decades after release without relying on active servers. The shift towards digital distribution allows publishers to control game access indefinitely, potentially increasing long-term costs for consumers who can't resell or share games. "A Minecraft Movie," released in April 2025, defied expectations to become a monumental box office success, grossing $163 million domestically and $313 million globally in its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut of the year and the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever, surpassing "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." Despite mixed reviews from critics, with a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film resonated strongly with audiences, particularly younger viewers and families, earning a B+ CinemaScore and enthusiastic word-of-mouth that fueled its performance. Produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary for $150 million, the movie's strategic release ahead of spring break, coupled with the star power of Jack Black and Jason Momoa, turned it into a much-needed hit for Hollywood, shrinking the year's box office deficit from 13% to 5.3% behind 2024. Its unexpected triumph, far exceeding initial projections of $70-80 million domestically, underscored the enduring appeal of the Minecraft brand and the viability of video game adaptations when executed with broad, family-friendly appeal. The Nintendo Direct was today, the Switch 2 was officially revealed, and digital games will cost $80. No, that wasn't a typo. Also some games won't even be on a cartridge, the cartridge is just a key to unlock the downloads... or something. $450. Are you buying a Nintendo Switch 2 at launch or nah? Nintendo Switch 2 games will cost an unprecedented $80 for digital and $90 for physical copies, potentially setting a new industry standard for game pricing. Digital-only games will require a separate cartridge key to unlock downloads, raising concerns about game ownership and digital rights management. The Switch 2's $450 price point combined with expensive games risks a Wii U-like failure, potentially impacting the entire gaming industry. The new controller's C button for game chat and GL/GR buttons are viewed as unnecessary gimmicks by some critics. The console's 2.5-6.5 hour battery life is seen as inadequate for extended gaming sessions. The Switch 2's 4K output and HDR support are considered by some as expensive gimmicks that don't justify the increased costs. If you can't afford a Nintendo Switch 2, you'll just have to settle for a Switch 1 according to the Nintendo CEO. Nintendo president Doug Bowser suggests those who can't afford Switch 2 should stick to original Switch models, echoing Xbox's controversial 2013 messaging. Switch 2 will be priced at an unexpectedly high $600-$700 due to Trump tariffs, significantly above the anticipated $450-$500 range. Nintendo plans to implement demand-based pricing for Switch 2 games, moving away from fixed price points. Switch 2 is slated for release on June 5th, according to Nintendo's teaser trailer. Switch 2 cartridges are intentionally made to taste bad using denatonium benzoate to deter children and animals from ingesting them. Bowser's comments are compared to Don Matrick's E3 2013 remarks, implying Nintendo doesn't want customers who can't afford their latest console. As the national Theatre continues to make their productions accessible to everyone on Wednesday 5 February 2025 1,000 primary school children from within Greater London attended a schools performance of ‘Ballet Shoes' in the National Theatre's Olivier Theatre with audio description and a pre show touch tour for the young visually impaired children from the primary schools too. The live description for ‘Ballet Shoes' was delivered by Eleanor Stollery, a young visually impaired Actor, Voice Over Artist and Audio Describer who had previously delivered the live description for the national Theatre's schools performance of ‘The Witches' too. RNIB Connect Radios Toby Davey went along to the schools performance of ‘Ballet Shoes' with Eleanor's live audio description and firstly explored through touch some of the props from ‘Ballet Shoes' that were on display as part of the pre show touch tour for the young visually impaired children. As part of the touch tour there was also a ballet lesson for the young visually impaired children so that they could experience some of the ballet moves that feature in ‘Ballet Shoes'. Shortly after the ballet lesson Toby caught up with a group of visually impaired Primary School children to find out how they had found the touch tour and that ballet lesson. Toby also chatted with Ellara Wakely, Head of Schools Engagement at the National Theatre to find out more about why the National Theatre wanted to make the schools performance of ‘Ballet Shoes' accessible to young visually impaired children. Toby of course also caught up with Eleanor just after the end of the performance to find out how it had all gone for Eleanor delivering the live audio description for Ballet Shoes' at the national Theatre's Olivier Theatre. To find out more about the National Theatre's programme, opportunities and resources for primary, secondary, further education or at SEND/SEMH schools do email LetsPlay@nationaltheatre.org.uk or visit - https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/learn-explore/schools/ And for more about access at the National Theatre including details of audio described performances, do visit - https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/your-visit/access/ (Image shows one of the children on the touch tour being shown one of the props from the production, an animals skull mounted on a wooden plaque. Frank Robinson was the first black manager when the Cleveland Indians hired him, but there was another black player who managed before Robbie . . . .
