We're taking on another request, this time for Sega's 8-bit console. We're looking at Spellcaster, a mash of a graphic adventure game and sidescrolling action sections, which is admittedly right in our wheelhouse. Is this a forgotten gem, or best left forgotten? We played it to let you know our thoughts. We also all have been playing the same current game, but not on purpose - and our patron Jason wanted to let everyone know about the Uncanny X-Cast, which you can find here : https://uncannyxcast.libsyn.com/ Want to jump right to the game? This week on The Free Cheese, you search and you action. Sega may be working toward its goal of transmedia takeover today, but the roots of the efforts follow back to 1987 on the Master System. In this episode, we look at Zillion and how Sega tried something different with a new property. It's also an opportunity for us to celebrate the unannounced Year of Metroid, so let's do that too.
We played it because the box art was silly. Then we talked about the politics of Rambo. The series is a satirical parody of a middle class American lifestyle epitomized by its eponymous family, which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie. Video games based on the series have reached multiple platforms since their debut in 1991. The Simpsons' first video game release, The Simpsons, developed and published by Konami, saw a release on the Commodore 64 and DOS, while Bart vs. the Space Mutants (1991), developed by Imagineering, expanded the franchise into new platforms, including the Amstrad CPC, NES and Master System. Over the next few years, the franchise would continue to expand, releasing system-exclusive games, such as the PC's Cartoon Studio (1996) and the PlayStation's The Simpsons Wrestling (2001). The release of The Simpsons Game (2007), developed by EA Redwood Shores (Visceral Games), further expanded the franchise, appearing on new platforms including the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. ________________________________________________________________________ Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. Cyborgs, circuits, and controller-smashing chaos converge in this week's electrifying Play Comics episode! Grab your pixel blasters and prepare for a digital demolition as we dive deep into the most metal crossover of the 90s: Robocop vs Terminator! Our special guest Ryan Placchetti from the Don't Wreck Yourself podcast joins us to dissect this multi-platform mayhem that blasted its way across the Super Nintendo, Genesis, Master System, Game Boy, and Game Gear. We'll explore the Dark Horse comic mini-series that spawned this epic robotic rumble, breaking down the circuits and carnage that made gamers and comic fans lose their mechanical minds! Learn such things as: Are Robocop or Terminator ever going to stop being relevant? Is this a bigger take on the capitalist nature of society or the true nature of police policy? Is it a feature or a bug when you have essentially different games with the same name coming out like this? And so much more! Our time has come.....The jump to 3D technology is here, in the form of compressed sprites! On this episode of Speed Radio, Dan and Tay have a nice little chat about the odd duck Genesis game, Sonic 3D Blast/Flickies' Island! Come listen as they explore the fascinating development of this unique isometric platformer, its visual identity, many rereleases, and more! From frustration to delight, messy platforming to immaculate music, this title has everything you want out of an early experimental title. There's also mention of the, uh.....phallic nature of an enemy. Look forward to that! Speed Radio, a Sonic the Hedgehog Retrospective Podcast, can be found wherever podcasts are hosted. With Nathan giving college football the ol' college try, Lee and Josh have a very British conversation - or, 'a bit of a natter' - about Sega's Walt Disney's Land of Illusion for the Master System which, of course, stars Mickey Mouse, along with some other characters we nearly forget about. In addition, thoughts and feelings are shared re: Sonic Colo(u)rs Ultimate, approx. three years late. Next week: Cartoon Time™! Got Spam? Fax us! ghzpodcast@gmail.com!
Ask not for whom the bell tolls, listener, as it tolls for our two hosts, Dan and Tay! Except, in a literal sense - as these two enter the ring ready to duke it out in a manner most slapstick! On this episode, Dan and Tay talk about the arcade fighter, Sonic The Fighters - otherwise titled Championship - alongside a rich history of Sega as a company. Arcades are no stranger to this Japanese developer, and it was bound to place its biggest mascot in a fighter at some point! Though Sonic had made arcade appearances, this was the first truly 3D experience of our beloved hedgehog. Come listen as our hosts chat about the cartoon nature of this game, its strengths, weaknesses, and odd development as a joke from a staff member. It's going to be a brawl for the ages! Welcome, listeners, to a maze most dire! When Eggman's scheming leads to him devising a pair of inverse speed shoes that he swaps for sonic's regular shoes, it is up to our blue blur to undo the curse laid upon him in this action-packed puzzle adventure! Come along as Dan and Tay have a chat about this 1995 release and its pleasant surprise in a sea of murky games. We're seeing improvement on a scale unprecedented as we begin to enter the 3D era of Sonic - will this trend continue in his favor?! Maybe. When a disastrous army threatens to destroy the young fox's favorite vacation site, it's up to the little inventor to craft up a scheme to get these crazy cuckoos out of here! Primarily by making weapons of war. It's all war. Listen in as Dan and Tay once more enter the ring and prevail over a unique game that is sadly flawed by its console restraints. A pergunta é: qual o melhor? It was originally a remodeled export version of the Sega Mark III, the third iteration of the SG-1000 series of consoles, which was released in Japan in 1985 with graphical capabilities improved over its predecessors. The Master System launched in North America in 1986, followed by Europe in 1987, and then in Brazil and Korea in 1989. A Japanese version of the Master System was also launched in 1987, which features a few enhancements over the export models (and by proxy the original Mark III): a built-in FM audio chip, a rapid-fire switch, and a dedicated port for the 3D glasses. The Master System II, a cheaper model, was released in 1990 in North America, Australasia and Europe. ________________________________________________________________________ Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us. Rejoice! Episode 7 of Speed Radio be upon ye as this dastardly duo tackles Aspect's third Game Gear entry in the franchise, Sonic Triple Trouble! Considered by many (see: one person) to be the apex of their career, this obscured title brings the franchise yet another lovable creature that wouldn't see a return until the space year of 2023.....and some arcade one-offs if you care for those. Yes yes y'all, we're chatting about Fang/Knak/Jet the Sniper/Hunter in this one! Come along as Dan and Tay chat about the fascinating design of this little game and the development of this new antagonist, as well as the ludicrous translation of this game's areas and bosses! In the fifth episode of Speed Radio, Dan and Tay play through the holiday-released Sonic Spinball! A pinball game focused entirely around Sonic and his speedy antics is surely bound to be a commercial success, right? With art direction hailing from the American cartoon and comics, it was bound to be a blast of a great time. Tune in to listen to our hosts thoughts on playing through this pocket-sized snack of a spinoff, and how good art can't cover up flaws in execution. Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris finally get back to the Alphabet Soup-er Series with Ninja Gaiden for sEga Master System. This is NOT the same game as Ninja Gaiden for NES, or Ninja Gaiden the arcade game, or Ninja Gaiden for Game Gear. This is completely different, but somehow also not? It's certainly an interesting experience, but is it a good one? Listen on to find out! At the top of the show, Dan finally got a biopsy done, and then came right onto the show post-surgery, because he loves you! He also spent a bunch of time playing more Metroid games, and got back into Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, because he was just having so much fun watching The Acolyte! Meanwhile, Kris gives his impressions of Rocket Knight Re-Sparked, Satyrn DX, and Nintendo World Championships NES Edition. He also beat Mega Man X for funsies, and got a new record player. Finally, in Week Old News, the former head honcho of ScrewAttack decides to create what he's calling The Real Game Awards, Aero the Acrobat gets re-released all by itself for some reason, a bunch of unlocalised Starfy games show up on NSO, Gimmick 2 looks great, and more! Our battle-hardened hosts Nicky and Eric must rescue captives from the berserk Gain Ground simulation in the distant future of 2348! Gain Ground is an action/strategy arcade game developed and published by Sega in 1988. It was later ported to the Master System, Genesis, and TurboGrafx-CD in 1991. Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?) Welcome to another spine-tingling, joystick-wiggling episode of Play Comics, where the pixels meet the page and the game controllers are always at risk of being thrown in excitement or frustration. This week we're diving into the dark cobwebbed corners of the gaming world to unearth the 1992 classic The Addams Family, a game that dared to ask “What if we took a beloved, macabre family and turned their life into a platforming adventure?” Based on the 1991 film of the same name, this game sprawled across the NES, SNES, Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, and Game Boy, proving that no console was safe from its kooky, spooky charm. In this episode we're thrilled to welcome back the illustrious Adam Williamson, a man whose knowledge of games is only rivaled by his ability to survive encounters with the supernatural—or at least supernatural-themed video games. Adam, who last graced us with his presence in a bodyslammin' discussion on WWF No Mercy, returns from the depths of the gaming archives to help us navigate the twisted halls of the Addams' mansion. Prepare for a journey where every jump is a leap of faith (into a pit of who-knows-what), every enemy is as bizarre as an Addams family member, and the only thing scarier than the game's difficulty is the thought of turning it off before finishing. Will Gomez find his beloved family members, or will he be doomed to wander the pixelated corridors forever? Join us as we explore the mystery, the humor, and the sheer Addams-ness of The Addams Family game. So tighten your seatbelts, adjust your monocles, and make sure your hand (Thing, is that you?) is firmly attached to your wrist. It's going to be a wild ride through the Addams Family estate, where the only guarantee is laughter, nostalgia, and maybe, just maybe, a newfound appreciation for games that make you want to pull your hair out—in the most delightful way possible. Learn such things as: How can you base a game off of single panel comics? How is this macabre family so wholesome? What does Jonathan Blow have to do with any of this? And so much more! You can find Adam absolutely nowhere except for on Play Comics where he writes comic reviews and appears on other episodes. Of particular interest to listeners of this episode are The Gimmick #1 and The Job #1. AJ, Mike, and Chris invite you to join Mickey Mouse as he journeys to save Minnie from the Castle of Illusion. Before there was Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega looked to Disney's iconic mascot to help cement its new Genesis console as a contender to Nintendo. Learn how the game came to be, how it plays, and its legacy in our latest episode. Sega and Disney Detailing Sega's 16-bit Genesis/Mega Drive launch in 1989, the hosts discuss Sega's strategy of working with established names, resulting in games like Castle of Illusion. Emiko Yamamoto, serving as director, played a crucial role in this collaboration. The Game Castle of Illusion is described as a simple yet vibrant 2D platformer. Mickey's quest to save Minnie from the Witch Mizrabel takes him through enchanted realms like Toyland and The Library. The hosts appreciate the game's relative ease compared to contemporaries and highlight its colorful graphics and smooth animations. Master System The Master System version is explored, emphasizing its uniqueness rather than being a mere replica of the original. Mickey's ability to interact with the environment is a notable distinction, and many prefer this version over the Genesis one. World of Illusion The hosts touch on the sequel, World of Illusion, released in 1992, presenting a departure with puzzle-platformer elements. Its vibrant graphics and cooperative gameplay earn praise, and Emiko Yamamoto's continued involvement is noted. Other Illusion Titles The episode delves into other titles in the Illusion series, including Land of Illusion, a sequel for the Game Gear, and Legend of Illusion, released in 1995 for the Game Gear and Master System in Brazil. Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion The Illusion series resurfaces in 2012 with Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion for the 3DS, adopting Metroidvania elements and paying homage to the classics. Remake Castle of Illusion gets a remake in 2013, expanding on the original with 2.5D gameplay and more exploration. The hosts appreciate the enhancements while lamenting that it marked the closure of Sega Studios Australia. Illusion Today The episode touches on the game's inclusion in the Genesis Mini library in 2019 and references Disney Illusion Island, a multiplayer Metroidvania inspired by Castle of Illusion.
