This episode contains: Steven is under the weather and Devon had to run fast for Sonic 3. Ben's making his way through the Knuckles TV show (lots of bowling in this one) before seeing the absolute zaniness turned up to 11 of Sonic 3. Do y'all remember “Dumb Running Sonic” on Tumblr? Devon recommends Jury Duty (Amazon Prime): Imagine a prank show where everyone's an actor… except one guy. Chaos ensues. Devon says it's a must-watch, as is The Wild Robot. It's all about nature, death, and a reminder that “nature is real.” Production babies galore! Ben explains how he got a Virtual Boy emulator on his 3DS, while Steven has been reading the book Filter World. Ben's also been playing GRIP Combat Racing, which is kinda like Mario Kart if you prefer ecstasy to mushrooms. You can get it for free right now from Amazon Gaming. Devon's contemplating getting Mario Maker, but then he'd have to get a Switch and that's, like, a lot of work, man…   Dumb Running Sonic: https://dumbrunningsonic.tumblr.com/ 3DS Virtual Boy Emulator: https://github.com/skyfloogle/red-viper Filterworld: https://www.kylechayka.com/filterworld  My Video Went Viral. Here's Why: Veritasium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHsa9DqmId8 Tokyo Override: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt32581509/ GRIP Combat Racing on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/396900/GRIP_Combat_Racing/ GRIP Combat Racing on Amazon Gaming: https://gaming.amazon.com/grip-gog/dp/amzn1.pg.item.d2358a22-76ef-4c8a-aa76-17b9a10543f5?ingress=amzn   Future or Now:   The Magic Schoolbus meets Rick and Morty: Ben recommends WTF 101 from Dropout TV. A quartet of kids in detention are schooled by an eccentric and sometimes cynical teacher who takes them on often horrifying field trips with the help of a time-traveling/teleporting/shrinking device. Their travels take them face to face with nature's most ruthless parasites, humanity's dumbest failed inventions, and much, much more. If WTF 101 had just made up all of these lessons, it'd still be a funny watch thanks to the clever storytelling, fast-paced plot, and punched-up dialogue. But it's the fact that the show seeks to educate audiences on real-world factoids that gives it that extra shine. It's hilarious, gross, weird, profane, and mostly true! It is NOT FOR KIDS and very much NSFW. Devon reflects on debates between theists and atheists. Why does evil exist? Maybe the animal kingdom knows.   Watch the first episode for free on Youtube (The Gruesome Truth About Parasites): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aZVgyUlSng Check out the entire series on Dropout: https://www.dropout.tv/wtf-101 Burn it all down: Steven presents a groundbreaking study that reveals RNA — not DNA — might trigger sunburns. Sunburn has traditionally been attributed to UV-induced DNA damage. However, a new study by the University of Copenhagen and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, reveals that RNA, another vital cellular molecule, plays a major role in triggering acute sunburn reactions.   Read more at Sciene Daily: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2025/01/250117112413.htm   Now for something a little more cheerful from Devon: Quantum suicide and immortality, a thought experiment exploring the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. The experiment involves repeatedly engaging in an activity with a 50/50 chance of death, with the idea that consciousness will always exist in the universe where the individual survives. Ben is reminded of the short film “One-Minute Time Machine” where a man repeatedly uses a time machine to retry a conversation with a woman, but what happens in the realities he leaves behind?   More on wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_suicide_and_immortality One-Minute Time Machine on Youtube: https://youtu.be/CXhnPLMIET0 “Book Club”:   This week: Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” (1966). The story follows Douglas Quail, a man obsessed with Mars who seeks out a company to implant fake memories of a Martian trip. It's very different from the 1990 film adaptation of Total Recall, the film's action-oriented approach was very different from the story's focus on psychological elements. Is remembering something the same as living it? “I remember recording a good podcast once.” “Steven, we've never recorded a good podcast.”   Read it here: https://philosophy.as.uky.edu/sites/default/files/We%20Can%20Remember%20It%20for%20You%20Wholesale%20-%20Philip%20K.%20Dick.pdf   Next week: Alfred Bester's Fondly Fahrenheit. Though the story's disturbing premise—that a servile android-robot could turn on its human superiors and commit murder—was probably radical at the time, without Bester's way with words, Fondly Fahrenheit wouldn't have become the classic science fiction short story that it is today. It's still cited as one of the best sci-fi stories ever.   Read it here: http://www.sfsfss.com/stories2/Bester,%20Alfred%20-%20Fondly%20Fahrenheit%20v1.0.htm

This discussion takes place on the Mail List which is open to all HPR listeners and contributors. The discussions are open and available on the HPR server under Mailman. The threaded discussions this month can be found here: https://lists.hackerpublicradio.com/pipermail/hpr/2024-November/thread.html Events Calendar With the kind permission of LWN.net we are linking to The LWN.net Community Calendar. Quoting the site: This is the LWN.net community event calendar, where we track events of interest to people using and developing Linux and free software. Clicking on individual events will take you to the appropriate web page. Any other business It's been another hectic month here at HPR Towers. As we discussed on the mailing list most of the time was taken by the migration to Mastodon, and the implementation of the mirrors on the Community Content Delivery Network. Some daily stats are been updated on https://hub.hackerpublicradio.org/hpr_ccdn_stats.tsv Summary of the changes to the repo https://repo.anhonesthost.net/HPR Dave updated his tooling for processing shows and they are now available on the Gitea repo. We finally got around to creating the HPR Documentation wiki. Community Content Delivery Network (CCDN) A location to track the deployment of the HPR Community Content Delivery Network, that provides a mirror network for our content. HPR Website Design This is literally in the whiteboard phase of the HPR website redesign. Where we can track Compatibility of the clients subscribed to our feeds. Useful Resources Where we can link to other free culture sites that provide useful services. Requested Topics Where we can track topics that have been requested, and link to shows that addressed them. There is also a list with information about Podcatcher and Podcasting Platform Compatibility. If anyone wants to adopt a player then please do so. The section on Workflow will be changing shortly due to Dave stepping aside, and also the need to distribute to multiple end points. All the processing will happen first, and then all the checks will be done at the same stage just prior to posting. For this to work we need help finding a simple manageable WYSIWYG editor that can produce sane HTML when the host uploads the show. We also need a new system to distribute the files from an origin to all the mirrors. Other changes and fixes. The day of the week is now available on the website. Fixed the RSS feed to show explicit status. Fixed a bug that limited the future feed to just 10 shows. Fixed a typo in the status page. Following feedback, added emphasis about the upcoming two weeks, to the scheduling guidelines. Notable shout out to the people who are promoting HPR and are helping people out with audio issues. Provide feedback on this episode.

Any other business HPR Updates There has been a lot of activity this month on the Gitea repos with rho`n catching up on outstanding bugs. We also had a lot of changes due to the ongoing Internet Archive outage that is still impacting us. A quick fix was to host the 10 day feed directly from the HPR server, but since then we have made all the media available on the HPR Community Content Delivery Network. We will have three sources but if you meet the requirements for hosting, and wish to help out please get in touch. 24/7 Home Service Fixed IP address Unlimited bandwidth Fast > 500mb/sec upload Large > 1T of storage Permission from your ISP to run a web server Contact information known to the Janitors Optional: UPS We added a html link to the comments page to provide direct feedback from any app that supports it. Eg: gPodder opens Firefox at the comment form. We have consolidated a lot of repositories on Gitea, removing some and moving others. https://repo.anhonesthost.net/HPR Documentation is now available and includes: Community Content Delivery Network (CCDN) A location to track the deployment of the HPR Community Content Delivery Network, that provides a mirror network for our content. HPR Website Design This is literally in the whiteboard phase of the HPR website redesign. Podcatcher and Podcasting Platform Compatibility Where we can track Compatibility of the clients subscribed to our feeds. Useful Resources Where we can link to other free culture sites that provide useful services. Requested Topics Where we can track topics that have been requested, and link to shows that addressed them. Workflow issues. Message from Dave Morriss I am planning to "retire" from the Hacker Public Radio Janitorial Team. I have been helping to administer HPR for over 12 years now. I first offered help to Ken in 2012 in response to an appeal he made. We met at OggCamp in that year, and I joined the Community News recording for episode 1066 in September 2012. My first show was 1091 in October that year. I will turn 75 in December 2024, and am finding that I don't have the energy to do as much as I could when I first joined. I also want to be able to devote more time to the various personal projects I have. I plan to consolidate all my scripts on the HPR Gitea repositories, and document all the processes I have been looking after. I want to have completed the handover by the end of March 2025. I will continue as an HPR host for as long as I can after that. I have had a wonderful 12 years as an HPR Janitor and will always look back on it with great pleasure. Provide feedback on this episode.

Sega Saturn byla totiž hned v následujícím roce připravena k uvedení, a kvůli tomu vývojáři ani hráči neměli o 32X velký zájem. Přestože měla dva 32bitové procesory a vykreslovala 3D grafiku, trpěla slabou knihovnou her a nízkým zájmem veřejnosti. Sega musela konzoli rychle zlevnit a nakonec ji doprodala s výraznou slevou. Retro gaming is making a comeback, and it's not just for nostalgia's sake. Avram Piltch discusses his son's interest in retro games and how it has sparked a renewed interest in old consoles and games. Avram's son, who is only 12 years old, is more interested in retro games than in the latest games. He watches videos about old games, quizzes his father on trivia about old consoles and games, and gets excited about playing old games in their original format.Retro gaming is in the spotlightAvram discusses his visit to a retro game festival in New York, where he shares pictures of his son looking at old consoles and games. The festival had every major console in historical order, starting from the Magnavox Odyssey, and attendees could play on them. Avram also came across a tool called Taz bot, which automates gameplay on certain old consoles like the GameCube. This tool allows players to program joystick moves and button presses to play the perfect game. While some may question the purpose of using a tool like Taz bot to automate gameplay, it highlights the growing interest in retro gaming and the desire to experience old games in new ways. The festival also featured old consoles like the RCA Studio II, Atari Lynx, PSP, Xbox 360, and original Game Boy, showcasing the variety of retro gaming options available. One of the key reasons for the resurgence of retro gaming is the unique experience it offers. Playing old games on original consoles and CRT TVs provides a different feel and look compared to modern gaming setups. Additionally, there is a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for the history of gaming that comes with playing retro games.Furthermore, retro gaming is not just about reliving the past but also about preserving gaming history. Events like retro game festivals and tools like Taz bot help keep old consoles and games alive for future generations to enjoy. The interest in retro gaming is not limited to older gamers but is also seen in younger generations like Avram's son, who are discovering the charm of old games.Old school gaming nostalgia festIn addition, Avram discusses a wide range of gaming devices, from the Space Ace and Dragon's Lair DVD games to the Virtual Boy and N64 playing Banjo-Kazooie. He also highlights unique consoles like the Game Tank, a homebrew console with its own set of games and cartridges, and the Dreamcast with its quirky peripherals like the fishing rod game. One of the most interesting aspects of the event was old educational systems like the Socrates and Sega pods, as well as handheld games like Merlin. The hosts also explore the evolution of gaming technology, from the Commodore PET and K-Pro computers to the Amstrad with its tape drive built into the keyboard.Avram and Scott share their experiences playing retro games and exploring the history of gaming, highlighting the creativity and innovation of early game developers. They also discuss the appeal of retro gaming for both seasoned gamers and newcomers, emphasizing the nostalgia and sense of nostalgia that comes with revisiting classic games and consoles.Controller matters for retro gamingAvram and Scott discuss the importance of controllers in retro gaming. They highlight the significance of using the original controllers that were designed for specific gaming consoles, as opposed to using modern controllers or emulators. They emphasize that the controller matters greatly in the gaming experience, as it affects the feel and gameplay of the retro games.Avram mentions examples of retro gaming controllers, such as the Atari joystick and the wheel controller for Atari Pong games. He discusses how the design and functionality of these controllers contribute to the overall gaming experience and how using the original controllers can enhance the nostalgia and authenticity of playing retro games.Additionally, the pair touches upon the idea of modifying retro gaming controllers to work with modern devices, such as installing USB connections in the controllers to use them with newer gaming systems. They explore the technical aspects of retrofitting retro controllers and the potential challenges involved in the process.Furthermore, Scott discusses the significance of Nintendo releasing wireless NES and SNES controllers for the Switch to enhance the gameplay experience of playing classic games on modern consoles. He emphasizes that the design and functionality of the controllers are integral to the gaming experience and that using the original controllers can enhance the overall gameplay and nostalgia of retro gaming.

TCW Podcast Episode 200 - The History of Handheld Games Part 3   In our concluding episode exploring the evolution of handheld games, we kick off with the Amiga and the allure of bouncing balls before delving into the Atari Lynx, an early and captivating handheld console. Despite its appeal, the Lynx struggled against challenges like its high price, the limited library of engaging games, and subpar battery life, ultimately being overshadowed by the Nintendo Game Boy—a device well-suited for puzzle games. Sega's Game Gear, whose origin may have stolen its design from Nintendo or Epyx- It's complicated. The Game Gear was notable but never had a lasting impact. Gunpei Yokoi took a daring leap with the Virtual Boy, which unfortunately flopped, returning to familiar ground with the Game Boy Pocket. Yokoi's departure coincided with the rise of Pokémon, injecting new vitality into handheld gaming. Yokoi later founded his own company, contributing to the development of Bandai's Wonderswan. This prompted Nintendo's response with the Game Boy Color.
