Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Forecasting One-Shot Games, published by Raemon on September 1, 2024 on LessWrong. Cliff notes: You can practice forecasting on videogames you've never played before, to develop the muscles for "decision-relevant forecasting." Turn based videogames work best. I recommend "Luck Be a Landlord", "Battle for Polytopia", or "Into the Breach." Each turn, make as many Fatebook predictions as you can in 5 minutes, then actually make your decision(s) for the turn. After 3 turns, instead of making "as many predictions as possible", switch to trying to come up with at least two mutually exclusive actions you might take this turn, and come up with predictions that would inform which action to take. Don't forget to follow this up with practicing forecasting for decisions you're making in "real life", to improve transfer learning. And, watch out for accidentally just getting yourself addicted to videogames, if you weren't already in that boat. This is pretty fun to do in groups and makes for a good meetup, if you're into that. Recently I published Exercise: Planmaking, Surprise Anticipation, and "Baba is You". In that exercise, you try to make a complete plan for solving a puzzle-level in a videogame, without interacting with the world (on levels where you don't know what all the objects in the environment do), and solve it on your first try. Several people reported it pretty valuable (it was highest rated activity at my metastrategy workshop). But, it's fairly complicated as an exercise, and a single run of the exercise typically takes at least an hour (and maybe several hours) before you get feedback on whether you're "doing it right." It'd be nice to have a way to practice decision-relevant forecasting with a faster feedback loop. I've been exploring the space of games that are interesting to "one-shot". (i.e. " try to win on your first playthrough"), and also exploring the space of exercises that take advantage of your first playthrough of a game. So, an additional, much simpler exercise that I also like, is: Play a turn-based game you haven't played before. Each turn, set a 5 minute timer for making as many predictions as you can about how the game works, what new rules or considerations you might learn later. Then, a 1 minute timer for actually making your choices for what action(s) to take during the turn. And... that's it. (to start with, anyway). Rather that particularly focusing on "trying really hard to win", start with just making lots of predictions, about a situation where you're at least trying to win a little, so you can develop the muscles of noticing what sort of predictions you can make while you're in the process of strategically orienting. And, notice what sorts of implicit knowledge you have, even though you don't technically "know" how the game would work. Some of the predictions might resolve the very next turn. Some might resolve before the very next turn, depending on how many choices you get each turn. And, some might take a few turns, or even pretty deep into the game. Making a mix of forecasts of different resolution-times is encouraged. I think there are a lot of interesting skills you can layer on top of this, after you've gotten the basic rhythm of it. But "just make a ton of predictions about a domain where you're trying to achieve something, and get quick feedback on it" seems like a good start. Choosing Games Not all games are a good fit for this exercise. I've found a few specific games I tend to recommend, and some principles for which games to pick. The ideal game has: Minimal (or skippable) tutorial. A major point of the exercise is to make prediction about the game mechanics and features. Good games for this exercise a) don't spoonfeed you all the information about the game, but also b) are self-explanatory enough to figure out without a tut...

In this episode we propose a few new buildings that would help vitalize the late game, utilize otherwise normally empty tiles, and give players more interesting and strategic choices to make without being overly complex for the simplified economy of Polytopia. Welcome back to the Pure Nintendo Podcast! This week's amiibo update is brought to you by the sultry tunes of K.K. Slider. This leads us nicely into a discussion on Animal Crossing events, along with other interesting tidbits. Roger and Jemma touch on the recent release of Bayonetta 3. Have we played it? How well has it been selling after the recent voicing controversy? We also chat about how the eShop works across regions. Jemma discovered an interesting anomaly with one particular game, which is much more expensive in her homeland of Australia than in the US. We also tackle the question: Are trading games actually worth it? Next, we discuss the games we've been playing this week. Roger has been diligently trying to achieve an impressive 100% completion rate in Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. Meanwhile, Jemma has been playing a few interesting titles, including Letterbox by POWGI and The Battle of Polytopia. Finally, we chat about the history of those cute Pikmin characters and how to play the original games in 2022. This is because Nintendo recently celebrated the 21st birthday of the series. We realize it's been since April that we did our last Substantive Cinema (a great show with Tyler Huckabee that you should all listen to and share with others if you haven't yet!), the perils of pivoting release schedules but we're back on track with an excellent one! Jordan Peele's 2017 directorial debut Get Out was a smash commercial and critical success (and we had Eugene Park on to discuss that back on Ep #62, link is below). Anticipation and expectations were high for his follow up two years later, and though his next effort, Us, released to very mixed reactions, there's an abundance of substance there and we had a great time revisiting it as we look forward to his next movie, Nope, releasing this coming weekend! Give it a listen and send us an email or a voicemail and let us know what you thought of the film and our takeaways. It has officially declared its policy not to release new models powered by internal combustion engines anymore. - The group carried out the largest-ever reorganization of its R&D headquarters on Dec. 17. The Namyang Research Institute has 12,000 R&D personnel and is a key organization that serves as the brain of Hyundai Motor Group. - The Engine Development Center was completely shut down and all powertrain-related centers were converted to electrification-related units. At the same time, the automaker decided to focus on securing battery technology by establishing the Battery Development Center. - Hyundai Motor has also torn down walls among R&D departments to shorten its electric vehicle development schedule as much as possible. This was quite unfortunate since Software Version 11.0 could be considered as one of the most extensive holiday releases that Tesla has released to date. - it appears that Tesla has now started to roll out V11 to some of its pre-refresh Model S and Model X. Images of the new software running the updated system were shared online. As mentioned by Tesla owner @HisandHersTesla on Twitter, even their 2017 Model S 100D received the update, though some features like the blindspot camera feature were not included. - Pre-refresh Model S and Model X that are equipped with MCU2 infotainment systems are capable of receiving more features from the V11 suite, including Subwoofer Tunability, the capacity to edit Waypoints, and access to TikTok, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sudoku, and the multiplayer option for The Battle for Polytopia. It's another top 5 special, and just like last time it's not at all worthy of the name 'Quick-Fire'! First up this week we're talking about our top 5 favourite (for one reason or another) gaming peripherals. Chainsaws! Fishing Rods! Bongos! Robots! Kinect?! Next up, we have a good long rant about the worst games from good franchises. Granted, we haven't made a habit of playing bollocks games most of the time, but we still have plenty of scorn for the likes of Mario Kart Tour, Resident Evil 6, Star Fox Zero and Mass Effect: Andromeda. Finally, we effectively take a trip down memory lane as we rank our top 5 mobile games - remember those?! Come celebrate the likes of 80 Days, Threes, Punch Club, Peggle and Polytopia with us. Don't forget to rate and subscribe, and get playing Hades for our next game club episode. Oh, you're already playing Hades? Of course you are. Nice one!

Imagine having a private band or orchestra talented enough to extemporaneously compose, orchestrate and perform the soundtrack to your life, adjusting to the environment or your emotions in real time? Better yet, what if YOU had the ability to create audio content that would adapt to any given situation in an immersive space? Ryan Groves is an award-winning music researcher and veteran developer of intelligent music systems. He also serves as the President and CPO of Melodrive, an adaptive music generation mechanism that uses artificial intelligence to create and integrate original music on any digital platform, be it a video game, virtual world or augmented reality system. Today, Ryan sits down with us at Boost VC to offer his insight on the future of music and explain how Melodrive is working to change the way we consume it. He also explains the concept of ‘uncanny valley' and shares his take on how long we have before AI takes over the world. We do our best to not be absolutely insufferable about our Games Media Brit List nomination in this podcast. Are we successful? Probably not. What else? Oh yes! We've been playing The Battle of Polytopia's multiplayer for months now - since the beta even - and we're ready to talk about how this update adds to our impressions of the single player offering. Be prepared for INTENSE DISCOURSE. On a similar note, there's a load in here about our recent experiences with Civilization V. Things like “how it's a great tool for telling stories with gameplay” and “why we now don't much care for the Aztec people”. We also talk about the perfect games to take with us on an upcoming holiday where we (affectionately) throw Rahdo under the bus, plus why Alex Garland's recent work - Annihilation - should have had a cinema release. All this, plus far too much food thanks to Easter in Slovakia, and using sayings that don't actually exist, with your pals Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). This Week on The Casual Hour... We wish the Nintendo Switch a happy birthday and go over our thoughts and feelings on the one-year-old console (and looking at every other gaming site, we weren't the only ones with that idea.) We also look ahead to what's on the horizon for the Switch, as well as detail a few longshot dreams of ours for Nintendo's newest console. Outside of our little birthday party, Bobby's been checking out the demo for Kirby Star Allies and putting more time into Crossing Souls and Monster Hunter while Chase digs into Battle of Polytopia and Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology. And of course, there's some Fire Emblem talk as Bobby starts Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (and Chase starts it all over again in solidarity.) Note: This episode was recorded before March 8th's Nintendo Direct (and this show description was written before it too,) so some parts of this podcast may be outdated. Let's Talk! This week we've got a long show and more than an hour of it is based around your letters! But first we talk Golf Story, Polytopia, Steamworld Dig 2, Cuphead, Shadow of War's microtransactions and more. This week's music: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Mary Jane's Last Dance
The Tangent - 116: Maxed Out Meat Vegas isn't all fun and games. Sometimes it is hard work. However, what is never hard work is playing games. This week Stephen opens with a quick update to Polytopia, an iPhone game he talked about a few weeks back. He just wanted to make a clarification. He swiftly moves onto Breath of the Wild, and he's beaten the game. Now, he can't wait for the DLC. Then Justin is up. Witcher 3 is still on his plate and he beat the main story. He thinks he got the good ending. He also finds that the DLC is more interesting than the main story. In fact, he skipped zero cut scenes in the DLC. Shocker! Justin also has the iPhone game, Fish and Trip. He describes it as something like Astroids. It's free, so worth a shot. Brian's only game this week is Injustice 2, but boy, is it a game. It is a fighting game made by the Mortal Kombat people. Right off the bat, the facial animations... beautiful. No joke. You should go check them out. Not to spoil it, but Brian gave the game a 'Green Light and a Half'. That's saying something. Last up is Gary, and he's got Prey. 12 - 15 hours into the campaign now. The ammo and weapons are becoming scarce. He's also been playing the game more stealthy. That's a very interesting move for him. The Drunken News: Game Show Edition this week opens with Justin's rant, and he makes the blatant mistake of retorting. We can't really have that. But he goes off on Destiny again, and this time Destiny 2, so we can forgive him. Maybe. After that, we've got Far Cry 5, Sonic Forces, a Witcher TV series, an ARMS direct, South Park: The Fractured But Whole release date, and more! The Drunken News Far Cry 5 Officially Confirmed Sonic Forces Custom Protagonist Confirmed The Pokemon Company Making a a New Card Game for Mobile Halo Wars Studio Head Dan Ayoub Leaves 343 Industries NETFLIX TO PRODUCE THE WITCHER TV SERIES After delays, South Park: The Fractured But Whole launches in October ARMS Direct Recap Extras Creep us on Facebook Stalk us on Twitter Watch us on YouTube Or throw us that review on iTunes or Stitcher Questions, comments, concerns? The Tangent - 113: Picnic In Poundtown The episode this week is Garyless, but not to worry, the guys do what they can to make it like old times. And but that they mean talking even more. First up is Stephen. Besides his usual Breath of the Wild talk (which we get to later), he has 3 iPhone/mobile games. Hyoerburner is a on rails Starfox-type game. You move by touching the screen to avoid obstacles. Pretty simple. Skydancer is a Temple Run-like game, but with the challenge of jumping from platform to platform and not falling to your death from the sky. Then, Polytopia. Think of Age of Empires or Civilization, but without the battles and you only have 30 turns to complete tasks and get the highest score possible. It helps that all the games were free. Next up is, Anthony. He played, What Remains of Edith Finch this week, and by the looks of it, got duped into thinking it was a horror game. It is not. What it is is a 2 - 3 hour walking game that costs $20.00. What's actually a horror game is Outlast 2, which Anthony also played this week. Brian and Justin want no part of this game. Especially when Justin remembers it's the game where you walk around with just a camera in the dark. Then speaking of Justin, he talks more about The Witcher III. He's still enjoying the game. He finds the more time he puts in the more he really appreciates it. Can't blame him. Lastly, Brian's turn. He's got Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, a remaster of the 1989 Sega Master System game. The game is difficult. Very difficult. It doesn't tell you anything. However, he loves the fact you can switch between the remake and the retro graphics and music of the original. He wishes more games would do that. Then the all of us talk about our time with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch. Keep your eye out for our Let's Play of it on our YouTube channel. The Drunken News: Game Show Edition keeps the points mostly positive this week. Brian had his 30 seconds to rant and he made sure to take it out on Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. While Gary's game was without a doubt on point.
