The nation's appearance at these games marked its debut in the Mediterranean Games, and its debut in any international multi-sport event. The delegation consisted of one athlete, long-distance runner Sara Carnicelli, and two officials, undersecretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education Melchor Sánchez de Toca Alameda and coach and technical director of Vatican Athletics Claudio Carmosino. Stylist Carlos Nazario and photographer Tyler Mitchell, who worked together on the summer issue's “Lone Star State of Mind: Snapshots of Texans Today” shoot, first met when Mitchell was an intern at Art Partner. A mutual friend introduced them and showed Nazario some of Mitchell's photos. Mitchell was intimidated. “I instantly was like, this kid's amazing” Nazario told Chloe Malle on the latest episode of The Run-Through. Mitchell began photographing as a teenager in Atlanta and quickly became a serious student of the medium. “I started to realize that the images that we're surrounded with in our daily lives are made by pretty much 12 people. I was like, there should be more voices here. That was really the call to action for me.” His perseverance paid off. In 2018, when he was just 23 years old, he was asked to shoot Beyonce's fourth Vogue cover for the September issue. The creative duo came to the studio to discuss this stunning shoot from the summer issue, in which they travelled to Texas to capture an array of images that represent both modern Texan life and more broadly what some of America's diversity looks like. Among their subjects were Dallas-born model Ruth Deng and her family, an Austin-based escaramuza team, a Houston-based cowboy, and The Ocean of Soul, Texas Southern University's celebrated marching band. Though neither of them had spent significant time in the state prior to the shoot, Mitchell felt it was critical for them to be there. “We have to look at the South. To understand the dynamics of this country, one cannot avert their eyes from the South.”Vogue's summer issue, which highlights America's 250th anniversary, really required that the masthead and the pair think deeply about what this celebration would look like. “My first thought was it's a complicated time in our history,” Mitchell noted, “And so without being naive to that reality, how do we address people's real lives?” Their response, he jokes, to that difficult request, was to head straight to the borderlands—they decided to set part of this photo series in Big Bend National Park, which straddles the Texas-Mexico border. In a very American turn of events, just as Vogue was settling on the national park as a location, news came out about the possibility of building a border wall through the middle of it. Plans to build this wall through the park have since been called off, but the prospect of such a development still loomed large over the shoot. “Your phone actually changes time zones down there,” Nazario explained. “But you also get down there, and you are in the river, and you're thinking, borders are so arbitrary,” Mitchell added. The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. Hosted by Chloe Malle, Head of Editorial Content, Vogue U.S.; Chioma Nnadi, Head of British Vogue; and Nicole Phelps, Director of Vogue Runway, each episode features the latest fashion news and exclusive designer and celebrity interviews. I’ve been journaling more or less daily for the past fifteen years. As much as I love the romantic vision of pen on paper, I’ve always done it digitally because I could never keep up with a handwritten journal. I tried, but it never really worked. Over the years, I’ve come across plenty of advice on the best ways to journal, the best techniques, and the best prompts. I always think it’s worth bringing a bit of nuance to these conversations because, as far as I’m concerned, the best way to journal is whatever way means you actually do it. And that depends entirely on who you are, what you want your journal to do for you, and how it fits with your life circumstances. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, I discuss something I recently noticed about my journal practice that I’d never considered before. https://youtu.be/mSpRvfmqW9A Since 2021, I’ve been answering the same four questions most mornings: What did I do yesterday? What was the best thing that happened yesterday? What are today’s news headlines? What are my plans for today? What struck me is that all four questions are surprisingly objective and focus on facts rather than feelings. They’re concrete, and none of them explicitly probe beneath the surface. They don’t want me to go searching for deeper meaning. Just record, archive, and document. If I’m short on time, I can answer the questions in less than five minutes (once I’m able to recall what happened yesterday). They are simple, easy, and objective. But more often than not, I go deeper and longer. Especially once I start thinking about the best thing that happened yesterday, today’s news headlines, and what I have planned. Recording and Processing The reason I started thinking about all this was that I saw a post on social media titled “How Journaling Actually Works.” It suggested that people get journaling wrong by recording events like a diary rather than finding the meaning in them. It caught my attention because it was the opposite of what I’ve found to be true. He suggests asking yourself questions like: What does this situation actually mean to me and why does it feel the way it does? Whoa, where do you start with that? What am I avoiding thinking about right now? What am I pretending is fine when it’s not? What would I do if I were not afraid of the outcome? These are reasonable coaching-style questions for addressing specific situations. But they demand a fairly high cognitive and emotional load and likely require more than the five honest minutes he suggests for meaningful insight. If those are the kinds of questions you’re asking every time you sit down to journal, it can start to feel like a pretty heavy-duty habit. I don’t know about you, but I would feel resistance to picking up my journal if that was what confronted me. My experience has been quite different. Over fifteen years of journaling, I’ve found that recording often opens the door to processing. The simple act of documenting what happened yesterday gets my mind moving. It gives me something to work with. And sometimes, while writing about ordinary things, I stumble into something much bigger. Recently, during one of our Haven Journal Circles, I responded to the prompt: What brought me peace this week? My answer was having the brakes replaced on my car. A fairly ordinary response. But when I wrote a little more about it in my journal the next morning, it opened up a whole bunch of things I wanted to explore, not least of which was putting off doing something I know needs doing. It prompted me to stop procrastinating several other things that have been draining me in the background for a while. I didn’t sit down intending to write about avoidance, and I wouldn’t have thought about it in relation to those other questions. It was when I considered something present for me (peace) that I could see what was missing. That’s one of the things I love about this style of journaling. I never quite know what might occur. Why These Four Questions Work For Me in My Journal Practice Interestingly, I used to have more reflective questions in my daily practice. For a while, I asked things like: What am I thankful for right now? What does this make possible? What one thing that is not urgent but important will I do today? These aren’t bad questions. But over time I found them difficult to answer consistently. My engagement with them became repetitive, and they started to feel a little burdensome. What did I do yesterday? This question is a helpful anchor. It’s shocking how easily I forget what I did just twenty-four hours ago. I regularly underestimate how much I’ve done and how far I’ve come. I adapt to changes quickly and can lose sight of progress that would have seemed significant only a few days or weeks earlier. Recording what happened yesterday helps me notice that movement. What was the best thing that happened yesterday? This question was an iteration of “What am I thankful for right now?” I realised that I didn’t find it helpful to ask what I’m grateful for. Because some days I don’t FEEL grateful when I sit down to write. But there is always a best thing relative to everything else that happened yesterday. And through responding to that question, a feeling of gratitude, appreciation, or satisfaction often follows. The best thing doesn’t need to be a great thing. It can simply be the best among a collection of difficult things. What are today’s news headlines? This is very much a personal choice because I like anchoring myself in cultural time. When I look back through old entries, it’s fascinating to see what was happening in the wider world alongside whatever was happening in my own life. It’s easy to lose track of timelines and current events. Recording headlines provides context for personal reflections and sometimes reveals connections I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. That said, I wouldn’t suggest everyone does this. For some people, there may be good reasons not to engage with the news during a journaling practice. You might choose to record the weather, books you’re reading, films you’ve watched, or something else entirely. The principle is similar because these things can influence us without us necessarily noticing at the time. And by recording and archiving regularly and consistently, these pictures can become clearer. What are my plans for today? This question took a little tweaking. I used to ask, “What will I do today?” As a way to commit myself to particular actions. But eventually realised that wasn’t quite right because my days often contain things I didn’t plan. Plans change, and unexpected things happen. If plans are framed as things I will do, it can feel like a failure if I don’t carry them out. But by asking about my plans rather than what I will do, I can set intentions for the day and later notice how closely reality matched what I anticipated. That neutral observation doesn’t need to become a judgment or source of self-criticism. My relationship with plans has definitely softened. Maybe because of this. Or maybe I approach plans this way because I hold them differently. Building Your Own Journaling Practice One thing that stood out to me in the social media post was the suggestion that consistency matters less than honesty. I understand the point being made, but for me consistency has been a key pathway TO honesty. And inconsistency would yield something more performed or forced. Keeping a journal creates an ongoing conversation. Over time it builds familiarity, trust, and reliability. The bigger thoughts and feelings have somewhere to go when they appear because the habit already exists. Not all journal sessions become deep dive self-examinations. Some do because most don’t. The post drew a distinction between recording and processing, and between shallowness and depth. But in my experience, the two are closely connected. Recording often creates the conditions where reflection can emerge. What Do You Want Your Journal Practice To Do and Be For You? Pay attention to how different questions make you feel. If you’re building a practice, ask yourself what you want it to be. Enjoy experimenting with it. Don’t be afraid to reject advice or to let go of questions that run out of road. It’s your practice, and it needs to work for you. The four questions I use today emerged through years of tweaking, adapting, and noticing what keeps me coming back with energy and enthusiasm. Your journal practice will probably look different. And that’s exactly as it should be. But maybe this is where you can start. Try these questions, tweak them, add your own, and pay attention to your relationship with the practice. Pick The Lock Do you want help thinking about this? It’s a good fit for a Pick The Lock call, which is a one-off 60-minute, choose-your-own-price session designed to give you a sounding board for a challenge, goal, or change you’re considering. Send me a message, or learn more here. Journal Circle If you would like some low-stakes, simple prompts to try things out, join us in The Haven. Every Friday we have our journal circle, where we meet for 30 minutes, reflect on the shape of the past seven days, and do a simple five-minute written exercise in response to a question. After that, we have space to chat about how we got on.

Get on the list for the July cohort of DEFENSE Foundations: elizabethbenton.com/defense You've made good plans before. Plans that made sense. Plans you wanted. And you've watched them fall apart anyway, in the same place they always do. This episode is about why that happens, and it has almost nothing to do with what you think. It started with an email from a regenerative farm I follow. They bought a beautiful, heavy duty gate to replace their old crooked one. Great idea in theory. In practice, the post it hung on was too weak to hold it, and that gorgeous gate has been slowly pulling itself over into the gravel since day one. That's the whole thing. That's why most of us never get where we want to go. We are all offense and no defense. The gate is the plan. The program, the protocol, the fresh Monday, the pledge to get up early and work out. It looks amazing. It makes sense. We want it. But as good as the plan is, without the right support holding it up, it falls apart. And instead of reinforcing the weak spot we already know is there, we just go buy a prettier gate. In this episode: Why your plan was never the problem, and what actually is The reason your morning workout really died the night before, on the couch, at 10:45 How to find the specific, predictable spots where you come undone every single time Why "I just need more discipline" keeps failing you, and what to build instead What to do when your first fix doesn't work (most people quit here and blame themselves) Why hope is what you reach for when you don't have the right tool Here's the truth at the center of it. You already know exactly where you fall apart. You've known for years. You've just never built anything there. That's not a character flaw. It's a post problem. And post problems get fixed. If you've spent years collecting beautiful plans and watching them sag into the mud, this is your episode. We're not here to sell you another gate. We're here to build the post. DEFENSE Foundations opens for the July cohort this week. Get on the list: elizabethbenton.com/defense

The loophole was a lie she told herself. Wren puts the outages back in the map she cleaned and reads what it's been saying since night one: the drain moves where she moves. August was never the hazard — he's the safety valve, and last night's closed loop didn't fix the fault. It charged it. When he asks how long she's been leaking, the truth she's never said aloud comes out of her — eleven dead, a blackout she signed, a baby in a unit that lost its cooling — at the exact moment a daylight brownout rolls toward a baby on Cedar Street. Two summers, one sentence. So she runs, and calls the distance penance. It's the same disappearance in a new column. And August texts: you said you were done running.Unlock an ad-free podcast experience with Caloroga Shark Media! Get all our shows on any player you love, hassle free! 1 Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise. 2 The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion. He who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life. 3 It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling. 4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing. 5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. 6 Many men claim to be men of unfailing love, but who can find a faithful man? 7 A righteous man walks in integrity. Blessed are his children after him. 8 A king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes. 9 Who can say, “I have made my heart pure. I am clean and without sin?” 10 Differing weights and differing measures, both of them alike are an abomination to Yahweh. 11 Even a child makes himself known by his doings, whether his work is pure, and whether it is right. 12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Yahweh has made even both of them. 13 Don't love sleep, lest you come to poverty. Open your eyes, and you shall be satisfied with bread. 14 “It's no good, it's no good,” says the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then he boasts. 15 There is gold and abundance of rubies, but the lips of knowledge are a rare jewel. 16 Take the garment of one who puts up collateral for a stranger; and hold him in pledge for a wayward woman. 17 Fraudulent food is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth is filled with gravel. 18 Plans are established by advice; by wise guidance you wage war! 19 He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets; therefore don't keep company with him who opens wide his lips. 20 Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness. 21 An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning won't be blessed in the end. 22 Don't say, “I will pay back evil.” Wait for Yahweh, and he will save you. 23 Yahweh detests differing weights, and dishonest scales are not pleasing. 24 A man's steps are from Yahweh; how then can man understand his way? 25 It is a snare to a man to make a rash dedication, then later to consider his vows. 26 A wise king winnows out the wicked, and drives the threshing wheel over them. 27 The spirit of man is Yahweh's lamp, searching all his innermost parts. 28 Love and faithfulness keep the king safe. His throne is sustained by love. 29 The glory of young men is their strength. The splendor of old men is their gray hair. 30 Wounding blows cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the innermost parts. How do you protect communities from intensifying floods, heat, storms, and other hazards when the words around those risks can shut the conversation down? In this episode of People Behind the Plans , recorded live at NPC26, APA Editor in Chief Meghan Stromberg talks with Ryan Slattery, AICP , a resilience and hazard mitigation planner in Houston, about what it takes to keep difficult conversations moving when trust is fragile, language is loaded, and the stakes are real. Drawing on more than a decade of work helping communities prepare for and recover from shocks and stresses, Ryan reflects on why “meeting people where they are” is not about avoiding hard truths. It is about finding the way into conversations that matter. Along the way, he shares what planners can learn from criticism, why the best engagement starts with listening, and how the work of protecting communities continues even when the vocabulary gets complicated. Ryan also offers a window into planning from inside a large engineering firm, where resilience work can be shaped alongside stormwater, transportation, and environmental expertise from the start. He talks about where AI may help planners make sense of complex information — and where human judgment still matters most — as well as the growing tensions around data centers, water, and the conversations communities cannot afford to postpone. And because Houston is never just a backdrop, Ryan makes the case for an NPC27 itinerary with bayou trails for hiking and biking, culture in every direction, and plenty of great food along the way. It is a conversation about resilience, community trust, and the uncomfortable moments that can make planners better at the work. As we regather for the second part of this event, Aviv Shahar offers this reflection: “One of the ways I answer the question, ‘What is it like to be in this liminal transition from an epoch that's fading to a new epoch that's emerging?' Well, it's like being in a playground — after I allow myself to relax to the situation. A lot of the time I don't feel relaxed. I feel I need to be something, to do something, to meet a certain need.” Sound familiar? We have been exploring together the shift from one epoch to another, and what that means for us as individuals and as a global community: letting go of what is no longer needed (making space), finding balance and stability while relaxing into the unknown, being open to what is newly possible and upholding in ourselves what we want to nurture into the future. It is easy to grasp these concepts intellectually without them ever hitting “home” for us personally. Far more powerful is to engage these contemplations with our Soul, our faithful guide and companion, designed to see us through these changes. What unfolds here are experimental and experiential ways of exploring these concepts so that we can feel them — literally, in the rigidity of a coiled fist compared to an open hand — and encouraged toward our individual discovery because that is the kind of playground where we learn and discover best. The invitation here is to dive deeper, beyond the brain, into the interiority, into the emotions/heart, into the sensory responses that are activated, or inspired, by contemplation into the questions at hand. The whole of us is the playground, under the management of our Soul, for this exploration, while connecting us to ways of engaging our full system that will serve us well in the times ahead. Discover what it is like for the Soul to facilitate the shift, From > To: From Rigidly Fixed > to Dynamically Evolving From Separated > to Connected From Valuing Things > to Prioritizing Relationships From Anchored in the Known > to Immersed in the Unknown From Reliance on Plans > to Trusting the Process This conversation is part of the continuing Portals discovery into what is emerging on the frontiers of human experience in this time of profound change. And what if actually, this which is now seeking to access that which is latent in us, what if it needs us to relax into not knowing? What if it needs us to relax into playfully discovering?” (Aviv) “One of the contemplations that emerged for me about the idea of separated and connected is that it teaches me to honor that we are separate individuals. And there is a design reason as to why life would want us each to be configured as a unique individual, and there is a design and purposeful reason behind why, along the evolutionary story, we released ourselves from tribal entity where we were homogenous, one unified self, to the discovery of the individuated self over recent centuries. And that there is a reason why this continual evolution is now nudging us to discover a new way of coming together.” (Aviv) RESOURCES MENTIONED Portals of Perception Website Aviv's LinkedIn Aviv's Twitter Aviv's Website Beyond the Collapse – Event Part 2: Separate Yet Connected

We are wrapping up this semester by bringing it back to where we started—remembering that the Bible is no ordinary book. It's the story of God's redemptive plan to rescue us from sin and restore the world. In this message, we will see how this plays out in the final book of the Old Testament, Malachi, and we will talk about what to do when you find yourself drifting away from your faith. -- In this series of Plans, with the biblical story as our guide, we will discover truths and develop skills that will help us become fully devoted followers of Christ. https://www.bible.com/reading-plans/29214-fully-devoted-the-conclusion | SWITCH IRL | Find a location near you here: https://www.life.church/locations/ | SOCIAL |

Psalm 37:7 calls believers into a posture of stillness and trust when circumstances feel unjust or when others seem to undermine our plans. In this devotional, Jennifer Slattery reflects on the emotional turmoil that arises when people act against us—intentionally or otherwise—and how easily fear, anxiety, and anger can take over. Through the life of David, we see a powerful example of someone who endured prolonged opposition yet learned to rest in God’s sovereignty rather than react out of panic or revenge. Highlights Psalm 37:7 encourages stillness and patient trust in God’s timing. Opposition from others can trigger fear, anxiety, or anger if left unchecked. Emotional reactions often intensify situations rather than resolve them. David’s life shows both suffering and unwavering trust in God’s promises. God’s plans are not derailed by human sabotage or resistance. Waiting on God develops patience, perseverance, and spiritual maturity. God often works behind the scenes before His promises are visible. Believers are called to rest in God’s sovereignty rather than react in fear. Full Transcript Below: Trusting God's Plans to Prevail When Others Come Against Us By: Jennifer Slattery Bible Reading: Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. - Psalm 37:7 How do you typically respond when someone does something to sabotage your plans or goals, or in some way makes your life difficult? What if they do this intentionally? Do you feel vulnerable and like they hold power over some aspect of your life? Do you find your anxiety spiking? And if so, does your fear ever present as anger and hostility? Sadly, I’ve reacted to such situations in each of those ways, especially when I felt the other person held power over something I considered important. This never yielded the results I’d hoped for. Most often, in fact, my reactions only made things worse. In some instances, my dysregulated emotions and the behaviors they triggered hurt me more than the “offense.” Although I still have much room for growth, I’m learning to follow David’s example, not just in today’s verse, but throughout his life. (His near homicidal rage in 1 Samuel 24 and his treatment of Bathsheba, which many scholars call rape, notwithstanding.) If you’re familiar with Old Testament history, you may recognize his long, fearful, and discouraging journey to the throne. The most prominent prophet of his day anointed him as ancient Israel’s future king when David was a teenager. But he didn’t step into his calling for another decade and a half. He spent much of the time in between living as a fugitive, hiding in caves and enemy territory in fear for his life. He knew God had glorious plans for him. Although he wrote psalms in which he seemed to express some degree of doubt, he trusted the Lord to do for him all that He’d promised. This trust, and the relational intimacy that supported it, allowed him to remain his godly, spiritually mature self, even when experiencing relentless attack. This amazes me when I consider the emotional weight he carried. When we first meet him, he stepped into a heroic role that gained him access to Saul, the then-reigning king. Soon after, the young warrior moved into the palace, where he faithfully served. He also led the nation of Israel into numerous victories, including against one of their fiercest enemies, the Philistines. One might expect Saul to respond with gratitude. Instead, he became jealous. Feeling threatened, he spent the remainder of his life pursuing David in order to kill him. As a result, David found himself forced from his home and his wife when Saul sent men to stake out his house, again, to kill him. During his flight, he sought help from a priest, who gave him bread and a highly symbolic sword for self-defense. He soon learned, however, that Saul found out and sent one of his men to kill all the priests serving at that particular temple—and their families. Women and children were massacred because one man offered David aid. Understandably, he blamed himself for their deaths. Can you imagine how that must’ve felt? Around age 30, David became king and brought peace to His people. He likely wrote Psalm 37 sometime during this time. Reflecting on his life, his suffering, and how God remained faithful through it all, David confidently proclaimed, in essence, to whoever might listen, “Don’t stress about the actions of evil men. God’s got you. Relax and wait for Him to lead you to your best life.” Intersecting Life & Faith: When we feel under attack and tempted to immediately jump into “fix it” mode, may we instead intentionally still ourselves before the Lord, which implies being still in His presence. That’s where we’re most apt to receive His comfort and strength and hear His perfect wisdom regarding how to respond to our circumstances. Entrusting our situation to God can feel incredibly uncomfortable. It becomes easier, however, when we remember His heart toward us, His power consistently employed on our behalf, and His faithfulness. We can choose to quietly wait on Him to reveal our best path forward, knowing He’s never wrong or ill-informed. He's also never late, although in my experience, his interventions rarely arrive early. It certainly didn’t for David! Although the Lord remained with him at every step and often worked behind the scenes on the warrior’s behalf, it took Him years to fulfill the promise He made to youthful David. That long, painful delay required significant patience and perseverance through a rather exhausting delay. David understood how difficult it can feel to wait, which is why, years later, he could advise his people, us, and countless others besides, to patiently wait on God—trusting Him to make our circumstances right. Friend, wicked people might make your present situation more painful and difficult than it needs to be. But they cannot thwart God’s very good, hope-filled plans for you. Remember that the next time someone does something that leaves you feeling vulnerable and threatened. Remember that Christ Himself guards your path and invites you to follow His guidance as He leads you to the glorious destination He determined just for you.
