Nintendo reignited the home video-game market with the Nintendo Entertainment System in the 1980s, but by the early 90s the Japanese game company found itself in an unexpected position: Player 2. The 1989 arrival of both Sega Genesis and Turbo Graphx 16 – more powerful machines, with aggressive marketing campaigns positioning themselves as the “radical” upstarts – officially kicked off the first wave of the console wars. Nintendo would answer with 1991's Super Nintendo, a sleek machine that would eventually be home to a slate of eye-popping games. Jumping from 8 bits to 16 encouraged developers to push the bounds of creativity. While the system would be unseated by the N64 after a mere five years, the SNES library features what are considered to be among the best entries in the company's line-up of original IP. So get ready to play with SUPER power as the Great Pop Culture Debate looks back at the Best Super Nintendo Game.Games discussed: Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy III (Final Fantasy VI), Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Kart, Mega Man X, Super Mario RPG, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, Street Fighter II Turbo, Donkey Kong Country 2, Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV), Secret of Mana, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Super Castlevania IVJoin host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Curtis Creekmore and David Silbert (of the Punished Backlog), and guest panelist Erik Slader from the Super Switch Club podcast as they discuss and debate 16 of the most awesome Super Nintendo games. For the warm-up to this episode, in which we discuss even more Super Nintendo games that didn't make the bracket, become a Patreon supporter of the podcast today.Episode CreditsHost: Eric RezsnyakPanelists: Curtis Creekmore, David SilbertSpecial Guest: Erik Slader, Super Switch Club PodcastProducer: Bob Erlenback Editor: Bob ErlenbackTheme Music: “Dance to My Tune” by Marc Torch#nintendo #supernintendo #snes #snesgames #snesgaming #videogames #supermarioworld #supermarioworld2yoshisisland #zelda #legendofzelda #alinktothepast #zeldalinktothepast #supercastlevania4 #finalfantasy #finalfantasyiii #finalfantasyii #donkeykong #donkeykongcountry #donkeykongcountry2diddyskongquest #supermariokart #mariokart #supermetroid #metroid #megaman #megamanx #streetfighter2 #chronotrigger #secretofmana #supermariorpg #tmnt #tmnt4 #videogames #90s #90sgamer #90sgamesSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Eric and Michael revisit the golden PS2 era with two very different titles: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the groundbreaking Ubisoft action adventure, and The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, EA's cinematic RPG with, perhaps, too many ties to the legendary film trilogy. In this episode of State of the Save, the hosts explore what made these games unforgettable, from fluid parkour mechanics and movie-licensed storytelling to the signature early-2000s style that defined the generation. This week, John and Ryan kick things off with some fresh gaming pickups. John dives into his full playthrough of Neva, sharing thoughts on its emotional beats and visual storytelling, and gives a first-timer's take on Beyblade Episode 1—no nostalgia goggles, just curiosity about the hype. Ryan's been hands-on with Hollow Knight: Silksong, and while the gameplay hits hard, the guys unpack the early reviews and why some folks aren't loving it. Is it fair criticism or just the internet doing its thing? They also recap their latest Dungeons & Dragons: Strixhaven session, where magical mayhem and academic drama collide. Expect spell-slinging, questionable decisions, and a few surprises from the party. In the news, the Switch 2 dev kit rollout is raising eyebrows—some developers still haven't received theirs. John and Ryan speculate on what that means for Nintendo's next-gen plans. And to wrap things up, it's time for a retro review: Streets of Rage on the Sega Genesis. Does the classic brawler still hold up, or is it just pixelated nostalgia? And yep, I get it now. MLF is awesome. The football itself is fine. Personally I prefer Tecmo Bowl for my retro football fix, but this is adequate. Where Mutant League Football shines is, well, the mutants. Decapitating opponents, bribing (or murdering) refs, and pushing your opponents into outer space are just some the things that set this game apart from other classic football titles. Add in a great playoff mode, the ability to win games by killing too many of the other team's players, and some pretty solid gross out humour, and you have a game that's playable in 2025 as it was in 1993.My guest this week is the official referee of RTG, Mike The Ref. We had a great time taking some shots at NFL fans while laughing it up over all the insanity that is Mutant League Football. I get why all you Sega kids are so proud of these games now, and I can PROMISE you Mutant League Hockey is getting some airtime at RTG Industries sooner than later. And before we slaughter some ref, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week we compare the PS3/Xbox 360 wars to the SNES/Genesis battles of the 90's. Is there any chance we get as second Mario Kart game this generation?? And why am I a Broncos fan??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Read transcriptGreetings, fellow arcade archaeologists and button-mashing historians! This week on Play Comics, we're diving headfirst into the delightfully bizarre world of Mazin Saga: Mutant Fighter for the Sega Genesis – that wonderfully weird 1993 hybrid that somehow convinced an entire development team that what the world really needed was a game where you could punch mutant biobeasts in the face AND grow to kaiju size for boss battles. Based on Go Nagai's MazinSaga manga (which itself was a mashup of his Mazinger and Devilman universes), this Almanic Corporation creation proved that sometimes the best way to adapt source material is to throw it in a blender with some Streets of Rage DNA and see what emerges from the primordial gaming ooze. We're absolutely thrilled to welcome Stik Braxton from Together We Anime, Too Tall Boyz, and Clueless Vino to help us navigate this mecha-infused madness. Stik brings his signature blend of pop culture expertise and comedic timing to help us answer the eternal question: does turning Koji Kabuto into a beat-'em-up protagonist while God Kaiser Hell destroys civilization make for faithful adaptation, or just really entertaining chaos? Armed with his Mazinger Z armor and an inexplicable ability to size-shift for dramatic effect, our hero must save humanity from an underground bunker situation that makes your average zombie apocalypse look like a casual Tuesday. So dust off your Genesis controllers, prepare for some seriously chunky sprite animation, and join us as we explore whether this genre-bending fever dream successfully captured the essence of its manga source material or just created something gloriously unhinged in the process. We'll examine how faithful giant robot fights translate to 16-bit glory, why boss battles needed their own fighting game engine, and whether any of this actually makes sense when you're having this much fun pressing buttons. Learn such things as: How to successfully blend beat-'em-up mechanics with one-on-one fighting without completely losing your mind Why God Kaiser Hell remains one of the most intimidatingly named video game villains in Genesis history The exact moment when “faithful adaptation” becomes “let's just make something awesome instead” And so much more! You can find Stik at too many places, so let's just make it easy and send you to the Clueless Creative Linktree. Are we born nerds or are we raised to be them? What impact does our environment have on who we are and what we love and just how important are the people around us? Our hosts open up about how they were raised and whether or not they think they were meant to still love Mario and She Hulk in their 40s. This one's got Jake deep diving into genetics, Holden's attempts at getting his dad to play Balatro, and Mike talking about how the games of the Sega Genesis allow him and his brother to honor their dead dad. Then we read some lovely letters from you the listeners about your upbringings and journeys. This one gets emotional but in the best way possible.Want even more Nerd of Mouth? In the late 1980s, a new multiplayer beat-em-up hit arcades, Golden Axe. It took what other games had done and added new depth to combat, a healthy dose of magic, and wrapped it all in Conan-style sword & sorcery. It wasn't just a hit with me and my friends, but an international success that spawned multiple ports and sequels, each adding something to the franchise and the brawler genre as whole. I loved playing this game in the arcade, but one of my best memories of it was wrapped up in the Sega Genesis version. So I start the show discussing how a game rental turned into the last all-night game sessions I ever had with a childhood friend. Then I move onto the game itself. I talk about the company and people who made it, its release, reception, and technology. While I might not be a Golden Axe master, I have played it through several times, so I also share some of my strategies for the game. Golden Axe remains significant for its role in shaping the beat 'em up genre. So significant that it looks like we might be getting a TV show based on it. One can hope that this will lead to future sequels or reimaginations of the original. And why not? With its blend of action, fantasy, and cooperative play, it helped set a new standard and one of its sequels was arguably even better. This is an important title in the history of video games, so I hope you give the show a listen and then go check out the game for yourself. If you can bring a friend, the experience will be all the better.
