Tonight, for our monthly Snoozecast Deluxe bonus episode, we'll read a Snoozecast original story featuring the day in the life of the famous American folkhero Johnny Appleseed. Born Johnathan Chapman, Johnny was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced trees grown with apple seeds (rather than through grafting) to large parts of many states including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Ontario and West Virginia. He became an American legend while still alive, due to his kind, generous ways, his leadership in conservation, and the symbolic importance that he attributed to apples. He was also a missionary for The New Church and the inspiration for many museums and historical sites. The popular image is of Johnny Appleseed spreading apple seeds randomly everywhere he went. In fact, he planted nurseries rather than orchards, built fences around them to protect them from livestock and wildlife, left the nurseries in the care of a neighbor who sold trees on shares, and returned every year or two to tend the nursery.  It is said that toward the end of his career he encountered a travelling missionary preaching to an open-air congregation. The sermon was long and severe on the topic of extravagance, because the pioneers were buying such indulgences as calico and imported tea. The preacher repeatedly asked "Where now is there a man who, like the primitive Christians, is traveling to heaven barefooted and clad in coarse raiment?" Finally, Johnny Appleseed walked up to him, put his bare foot on the stump that had served as a pulpit, and said, "Here's your primitive Christian!" Kim recently took her two girls to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando for a mother-daughter getaway. Hear more about her trip, learn some strategies for using Lightning Lane, new rides, new theme parks coming, and comparisons between the parks. It was hot, humid, and rainy in the afternoons, but they still had a fun time exploring all the parks. Luckily, Universal Orlando has more indoor rides that help on rainy days. Updates from Walt Disney World Tron in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom - it is like riding a motorcycle but on a roller coaster track. The ride is fabulous but really short. Splash Mountain is now Tiana's Bayou Adventure - this is a two-by-two flume-like ride that has been redesigned. Disney now has Lightning Lane Multi Experience and Lightning Lane Single Experience. With the Multi Experience, it works on multiple rides and as soon as you tap into one ride, you can request the next Lightning Lane. You want to purchase and prebook your first ride in advance. Single Experience is where you can buy a Lightning Lane time slot for individual rides like Tron or Rise of the Resistance. Disney's Lightning Lane experience is better than Universal's Express Pass because they load people from that lane faster. Disney has also changed their rules around their Disability Access service and made it much harder to obtain a pass. Keep this in mind if you have children with special needs and have used that service in the past. Tip: If you want to stay at one of the Deluxe hotels on property, you can stay by renting Disney Vacation Club points. (Riviera has Skyliner access) See Kim's article on renting and using DVC points. Disney is building a new ride in the Avengers Campus and they are getting rid of the Tom Sawyer Island and Riverboat in Magic Kingdom to create Cars Land. Updates from Universal Orlando Note: Universal Orlando hosted Kim's family for this part of the trip. Kim stayed at the Loews Sapphire Falls, which is a Moderate property and does not include the Express Passes. The Sapphire Falls is within walking distance to the parks and guests get one hour early entry. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure still has very long lines. The nice thing about the Universal Express Passes don't require you to book any times online, so it is less stressful to manage. However, many people have these passes because they are staying at the premium hotels and the lanes load slowly so sometimes you don't save a lot of time (sometimes only about 10 minutes of time savings). There is a Universal Express Unlimited Pass that lets you ride a ride in the Express pass lane as much as you would like, without limits. Universal Orlando is building a whole new theme park in 2025 called Epic Universe. It is going to be further away from CityWalk and the other parks or hotels. It will also have another portion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Ministry of Magic. O'Dwyer Properties seeks to annex and rezone 14.91 acres for the project, which includes 11 three-story buildings. The development aims to provide "missing middle" housing. Access will be from Highway 140/Waleska Road, with a private road for emergency access. A traffic study is pending, and improvements to Lucky Street are proposed. The Canton City Council will hold a public hearing on November 7, with a vote expected on November 21. STORY 2:  Roundabout Coming to Trickum Road at Little River Park Cherokee County and Woodstock have agreed to build a roundabout at Trickum Road and Nocatee Trail, enhancing traffic flow and serving as the entrance to the future Little River Park. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the agreement on October 15, following Woodstock City Council's approval in September. A 2018 traffic study highlighted the need for improvements along Trickum Road. Woodstock will fund the design and right-of-way phases, while the county will cover up to $900,000 or 50% of construction costs. Construction bids began in September, with completion expected in two years. STORY 3:  Total Joint Surgery Center Coming to Canton Northside Hospital Healthcare System recently opened a new medical office building in Canton, celebrated with a ribbon-cutting event on October 8. Located at 1521 Hickory Flat Highway, the facility houses two practices: Northside Hospital Georgia Cancer Specialists and Total Joint Surgery Center – Cherokee. The Total Joint Surgery Center, specializing in hip and knee replacements, will start seeing patients on October 22, featuring state-of-the-art equipment for surgeries. Commercial: INGLES 7 STORY 6:  Georgia unemployment held steady in September Georgia set employment records in September, maintaining a 3.6% unemployment rate, below the national average. The state achieved all-time highs in job numbers, employed residents, and workforce size. Jobs increased by 6,800, reaching nearly 5 million, with significant gains in health care, social assistance, and food services. However, private educational services and transportation sectors saw declines. The number of employed Georgians rose to over 5.2 million, while the labor force grew to over 5.4 million. Despite a slight rise in unemployment numbers, initial unemployment claims decreased by 3,598 to 19,600. STORY 7:  New Restaurants and Businesses Coming to Woodstock's Adair Park The Adair Park development in downtown Woodstock is expanding with several new businesses set to open soon. Current establishments include Starbucks, Roberto's Deluxe, and HealthSprout Chiropractic. Roberto's has quickly become a top restaurant in Cherokee County. Upcoming openings include Kale Me Crazy in February, Project Optical in March, and two restaurants by Chef Roberto Trevino: Paloma Tequila and Tacos, and Isabella's Mediterranean. Oishii Sushi Noodle Bar and Italian restaurant Catalina Cucina are also in the works. By shifting her mindset though these daily mantras toward success, and away from fear, Ruth began to see her financial reality transform. Ruth is well known as the “Profit and Wealth Guru.” She has a passion for helping businesses get and stay profitable utilizing the latest systems, processes and technology. Ruth holds an MBA in Finance from Georgia State University and Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively. Ruth started the Decatur, Georgia branch of the Small Business Development Center in 1982.  She also started the Women's Entrepreneurial Center and taught a year-long course for women who wanted to start their own businesses.  This course was the foundation for one of the classes at the Women's Economic Development Authority in Atlanta, Georgia. More recently Ruth was the instructor for ICE, the Inner City Entrepreneur program in conjunction with the Small Business Administration. This 16-week course taught business owners with at least $400,000 in revenues (and many had over $1,000,000 in revenues) how to grow to the next level. A large part of the curriculum was aimed at improving the financial knowledge of the business owners enrolled in the course. Her latest book, 101 Dumb Financial Mistakes Business Owners Make and How to Avoid Them, joins 5 other award winning books: The Courage to be Profitable, Profit or Wealth?, The Ugly Truth about Cash and The Ugly Truth about Managing People. Ruth has also been interviewed by the Wall Street Journal Radio Network, the Big Biz Show, and many regional and local radio programs. She has appeared on MSNBC's It's Your Money program, Fox San Diego, and many other local television stations. Ruth has spoken internationally on financial topics for Kohler, Carrier Corporation, Safeguard (division of Deluxe), and many other corporations and national, state and local associations.
